    Hope you enjoyed checking out the not often discussed Gould mouthpiece! If you like how the Gould sounds, also check out the YAMAHA TOM HOOTEN MOUTHPIECE - ua-cam.com/video/NIllrN0xi_Q/v-deo.html

      Jon thanks for these videos! If you have the interest, I'd love to see you do a breakdown of the Rod Franks Yamaha Signature. While I can't find the interview right now where he mentions this, I think it's a copy of a mouthpiece he used since he was 13, all the way to co-principal in the LSO. A Schilke his dad bored out for him I think he said? Anyway given his recording history it might make an interesting case for your series. It has a wide throat/narrow-ish backbore. Cheers.

      Sure thing Patrick! Consider the Rod Franks to be the next mouthpiece feature!

      @@JonTalksTrumpet That would be awesome! I'm curious if any of your contacts or research have anything to say on the shape of this mouthpiece for orchestral playing. Efficiency-wise, etc.

    I've tried dozens of mouthpieces, some pricey, some not, and my primary piece is a plain old Yamaha.. It outplays the Reeves I just bought, at less than a quarter of the price. Insane!

    Thanks for going out of your way to really dive into what makes each of these signature mouthpieces unique. Really is much more helpful than just staring at mouthpiece charts and measurements all day.
    Also goes to show just how ubiquitous the Bach 1 1/4C & Yamaha 17B4 really are for a great, all-around orchestral workhorse.

      Bobby, thanks so much for saying that! Very glad you find my content valuable, and I agree - looking in a visualization software is just so much more informative and educational than looking at a chart. Yes, those mouthpieces really are the classic orchestral sound - I just prefer something with a sharper bite and a flatter rim. 🤓🎺

      I used the Franks model for close to a year. Really efficient design. Apparently it was based on a schilke mouthpiece he had modified as a young player. Can’t place the rim size but I know it has a 23 throat. If you want to hear Frank’s on it, check out the stuff of him doing Mahler 6 on UA-cam and that recording (I believe it’s LSO from around 2008) of the same piece. All on Bb trumpet, as is the English tradition over there.

      @@JonTalksTrumpet That ones a bit hard to come by now. It’s out of stock at most places, though I don’t believe it’s been discontinued.

    Does anyone ever mention that you have to practice about 20,000 hours to even be a hair on Marc Gould's butt ? I've seen Marc play 3 different mouthpieces while rehearsing the Hummel . Guess what ? he sounded spectacular on all of them. What mouthpiece , horn, valve caps , you use makes no difference unless you practice. Start by taking the horn out of the case, Carl Severinsen said that.

      I grew up playing to the right of Mark as 1st Horn of the Westchester (NY) South Symphony (Mark and I are high school contemporaries. Mark studied piano with my Mother). Said simply, Mark was born with his sound. BTW, for any Horn players out there, I was John Barrows first "kid" student in his NYC days.

      @avrumgolub2735 l know Mark from the Met. And as you said , that sound is straight from God.
      But, to become a legend, takes 20 K hours of practice. 😀

    What C trumpet is that that doesn't require alternate fingerings for E and E-flat?

    • @THall-vi8cp
      @THall-vi8cp 2 роки тому +1

      Nevermind, it's in the description. I should have read that first. 🤦‍♂️

    • @JonTalksTrumpet
      @JonTalksTrumpet  2 роки тому

      Haha! I use both fingerings, depending on the situation. 0 and 2 are of course flatter but can be pushed in tune and have better response. 12 and 23 are better when you need a more brilliant sound or when they are the 5th of a chord or whatever.

    • @THall-vi8cp
      @THall-vi8cp 2 роки тому

      @@JonTalksTrumpet I do the same, actually. I have an old Bach 239 from about 1968 and I had Dick Akright take off the A pipe and put one of his Bel Canto pipes on it, but in a reverse configuration. It really lights up and has good intonation up and down the horn.
      With my first C trumpet I wasn't so lucky.

    Years ago I played on a 1 1/4C that had a pronounced flaring in the end of the backbone. Someone told me it was a special backbone and the reamer had been put further into it, creating that section at the end. I found it difficult to play on which is how I ended up on a Bach 1.

    • @JonTalksTrumpet
      @JonTalksTrumpet  3 роки тому

      I’m trying to remember, do the no letter bachs come with a 10 backbore?

    • @GordonHudson
      @GordonHudson 3 роки тому

      @@JonTalksTrumpet Yes, the C cups and no letter have a 10. The B cups have a 24.
