We have owned 6 beautiful Shelties and they are such an amazing breed, intelligent, loyal, intuitive, protective, beautiful and your best friend……the list goes on. Once you have had a Sheltie you will realise they are somehow more than a “dog” if that makes sense. People stop and comment on the beauty of our dogs on a regular basis. I am so grateful for the Shelties that have shared my life ❤️
My current dog is a mix of 8 breeds, but the main 2 are poodle and Shetland sheep dog, she is very smart, but to be 100% honest my favourite breed is shihtzu, but I love my poodle/Shetland sheep dog for a bigger dog, she can do Nina otterson puzzles I have bought, I havnt tested my friends shihtzu if she can figure them out yet
I was not a dog person prior to getting my sheltie. I wanted a cat, but I'm terribly allergic. So I compromised by getting a sheltie. Lemme tell you: he is such a blessing to me. He kind of reminds me of a cat honestly.... but he is so sweet, sensitive, smart, gentle, and surprisingly superrrrrr quiet (I got lucky). I can imagine sticking with this breed forever.
That's exactly how everyone described my late Sheltie: 'cat dog'. And that's why I loved him. Showed me affection his way, following my everywhere, but always independent, a bit aloof and suspicious of everything. Didn't enjoy cuddling. So intelligent and sensitive
I grew up with shelties and they are amazing dogs. My mom is a professional trainer and there were things we taught our Shelties in 2 or 3 tries while our Shih Tzu took 3 years to learn the same obedience skills! They are highly intelligent and love to work and learn
My sheltie was almost human...so smart! My daughter was in her crib upstairs. I went downstairs to get water. The vaporizer was on. Suddenly she started barking and running up and down the stairs. Yea like lassie lol. I followed her to the bedroom...sparks were coming from the wall where the vaporizer was plugged in. Iimagine...she actually saved my daughters life!! I loved her so much and think of her still after many years. I hope she's in heaven. If the lion will lay down with the lamb surely she's with God. I hope she is happy and knows I still love her

I have ownned nine Shelties over the last twenty five years and couldn't ask for a better bunch of kids! Absolutely everything you said is very true and furthermore, they are a very sensitive dog and require a soft voice and a gentle touch! One more thing, they are so smart we started spelling words around them so they wouldn't get too excited before a walk or playing ball well, it didn't take long before they caught on to exactly what we were spelling! I've been outsmarted by more Shelties than I care to admit to. We won't talk about when three Shelties blow their coat at the same time! 😖
sklein750...I am very happy your Shelties lived to ripe old age. I gave my Sheltie the best of everything physically and mentally and I had to put her down ten days into her 11th birthday from painful Bone Cancer. Will always miss my Wendy. RIP sweet girl.
The thing with the wide variety of personalities is so true, and i never thought of that before! It's very hard to predict how energetic/open/sensitive etc my sheltie will react bc it really differs from day to day and then differs again wildly from her brothers and sisters
I was helping a customer by lifting bags of stones into her car and one of these was in the back seat. She said she was rescued because she was being used for puppies, she had two litters before she was three years old. She was badly treated and the lady told me she was badly matted and very timid but the little lady dog was very nice, she let me pet her and give her ear scratches. I've met lots of interesting dogs at my work as I usually work in the pet section but I never got to pet a Shetland Collie until today, it felt like an accomplishment. The customer said I am very lucky because her dog usually is timid, especially around men.
My sheltie is my first - sweet little boy, and so smart. We got him just before the pandemic, and he got us out walking during it - outside, and healthier.
I had 30 years of Red Longhaired Weiner-Dogs & they are Fantastic! With Personality!!! I switched to Shelties 15 years ago (Athos is on his way to the Dog Star 🌟) 😇 He was incredible & we all miss him very much 😔 Now comes D'Arkagnan (a Bi-color) & he's adorable! Shelties are SPECIAL! ❤️
I had a Sheltie as a kid from about 2-12 years old. Tons of energy, we had about an acre fenced in for him and he would runs laps all day even when he got older.
I loved my sheltie when I had her, and she was my shadow everywhere. As she got older she became very, very shy around strangers -- as they would quickly reach out to pet her which tended to very much stress her out. I remember then she would then hide behind my legs, and push me forward when she had enough.
My Sheltie , Jazz could learn a new command in three, five minute sessions spread over two days. She was so trusting, she would literally fall ( not jump ) from a tree or wall a meter above me, knowing I would always catch her
My sheltie is so smart she knows whether the command is useful or not, if i tell her to sit when were inside and i dont have a treat with me she won't do it 😆
I had one named Rush years ago when I was little. I raised him from a newborn puppy (well a few days old). Sadly after about 12 years we were forced to put him down because he was losing control of his bowels and was getting worse. I steal feel like he's around (not just me my family feels that way too). I miss him but it was the right thing to do at the time.
I'm definitely a lover of the Sheltie breed, I have a three month old new addition to our family, he is the fourth sheltie we have had. He is so lovable and is developing his own personality including becoming our shadows What amazes me is that he knows what time is his feeding and he'll stand by the pantry door and bark.....How does he know?
Because he’s hungry and you’re probably underfeeding him. I have always left dry food out 24/7 for all my dogs and cats and they NEVER overeat or get fat. They get their wet food (which is raw chicken in this house) once per day but if they are hungry before or after, they have free access to food. And of course puppies need feeding every few hours. Yours is probably hungry.
I lost my sheltie in 2017 to cancer granted the old boy lived to be in his golden years and man if he wasn't the best dog a person could have. I've finally worked myself up to get another one , best breed out there in my opinion
Love my sheltie! First one that joined my family passed away back in 2016 from old age. Do miss him. Was so hurt about his loss it took me til 2022 to buy a new puppy. He’s so thick skulled and lazy about learning new tricks.
I actually trained her so she knows that nothing exciting happens and i won't leave without saying goodbye, so she just chills in her favourite spots all the time, except of course i interact with her. I think she's more relaxed that way! But when we're someplace else she really sticks to my side until she feels save enough :) also when walking off leash shr always stays near and checks where I am!
Awesome video! One thing to add, Shelties can be big too! Although it’s uncommon, Shelties can grow up to 50lbs! My girl is 40 lbs but she’s not fat, she’s just taller and bigger. Most people confuse her for a Collie.
My sheltie was convinced he could drive a car. Honestly, if we could have rigged something up so he could push the peddles, he might have been able to. He was obsessed. He tried his best to teach my sister and I how to drive when we were learning.
Oh,yes I have lived with these bred of dogs.Over the last nineteen years my wife and I have had three that have gone to,Rainbow Bridge, two lived a long life, the third one life was cut short from an enlarged heart at six years.Presently we have two,one will be three and the other will be two.Everyone of them had their own personal personallity.Ww loved every one of them
RIP to my Mollie girl. A beautiful black fur pure bred with brown and white highlights. I miss that little snout so much. A leash was never needed, she was so well behaved and never wandered out of eyesight of each other and would wait for me to catch up on hikes. She executed every command with grace and ease. I have a Husky now who is just as loving and caring, and just as clever and personable, however, she is much more independent than the Sheltie. Her stubbornness sometimes is part and parcel for the breed, but god damn can she throw a bitch fit sometimes. All for not bc all it takes is some slow deep ear scritches and shes putty in my hands. I always think about how the two of them would have interacted. The energy between them would have been insane. Two of the most beautiful dog breeds imo.
Linda Dunn • MY Sheltie, Laddie, is 11 y.o. He's my best friend. I got him when he was four months old and a bundle of energy. He says puppy like until he was two years old. Quite a handful, but so much fun. He and I have gotten old together so we are pretty much a matched pair now. I feel so bad for you. I know if I outlive my Laddie I will mourn him the rest of my life.
Yes they bark..but are really good with kids ( discounting the fact that she nipped @kids heels running around the backyard) she was a great dog for my kids to grow up with..sometimes funny..loved to go on a sled in the snow..we also got a collie..we never had a break-in. Too bad Sheltie got cancer @ 11 yrs old.
When we got to health risks, I was pretty sure something was going to be mentioned about their skin. My sheltie has had skin issues her whole life, it could be atopic (seasonal allergy) or some specific common breed conditions like hypothyroidism (which she has) or dermatomyositis (DMS, and we're not sure if she has this or not) which can both cause fur loss, dry flakey skin and DMS is characterized by lesions in areas lacking muscle like the face, legs and tail (my dog's tail is bare except for some fur growing on the end). There's no cure for DMS or hypothyroidism, and we still don't have her symptoms under control with the effort we've been putting in, so keep in mind, you may have a chronically ill sheltie who NEVER stops licking their paws and is balding so you may need to buy doggie sweaters to keep their bare skin warm in winter.
fun fact they're in the top 5 rarest dogs in Shetland and they're are none ever used in Shetland for herding and sheepdogging, when see they are always heeling to they're.owner and are quite protective as it's in they're nature
I'm curious, are there mini shelties being bred? I sometimes see shelties that are very small, really tiny. Our pedigree sheltie was comparatively quite large, in fact he was once described as a "small male collie" when he was nicked by the dogcatcher :)
Our Sheltie (Dusty) just passed away on Sunday. He was almost 14 years old and has been with us through so much. Much harder than I thought it was going to be. A member of our family died; not just a dog. That said, we've been planning on getting a new pup in a few months once spring comes around (so much easier to train a puppy in spring than in winter). We were considering either another Sheltie, or maybe an Australian Shepherd. Any body have any thoughts? thanks
Hi. I am thinking about getting a Sheltie as my first dog. I have some questions maybe someone will help me: 1. Is 60 sq meter flat with a 7 sq meter small garden enough for them? 2. Can we have a cat too or it may cause a problem? 3. Is it possible to train them to bark less? 4. Is it a good first-time dog? Thanks in advance. I am in love with Shelties❤
I had 2 very smart dogs sparky was very smart saved my life twice and followed my everywhere would hide when I said bath miss my sparky he died of skin cancer he was almost 13 he was 2 months old when I got sparky miss him the best dogs
I bet you do ... I have had first hand experience of indifference, due to not fully appreciating that any companion animal, even a canary, can feel like a family member, and is, rightly, treated as such ... Also, Sparky seems an apt name for a Sheltie; like the Duracell Bunny, Sparky by name, Sparky by nature ... until nap time ... And the fact Sparky was alert enough to save your life ... of course you would grieve ... All I can say, the pain doesn't quite go away; it just stops hurting quite so much ...
Don't let barking be exaggerated. Shelties do not bark that much unless they are being mistreated. Furthermore Shelties have baby voices. Grooming is not a big issue. But is is a pleasant task because it is time you can spend with the Sheltie
Collie eye anomaly, Hip displasya, Von willebrand disease do not just spontaneous develop. This is in the DNA of the dog. A reputable preservation breeder would test for this and many more before breeding a dog. They would not breed animals with this or MDR and MDR1 Other that this information this is a great video to introduce people to the breed
Von Willebrand disease I can say for certain is genetically inheritable, as it belongs in the same group of blood clotting disorders (or, rather, the inability to clot sufficiently enough) as haemophilia, except compared with the later - at least in humans - both males and females can not just carry it, but develop it, also ... I would imagine, given the double coat, it's near impossible to detect easy brusing of the skin, but a minor cut that bleeds more, and a lot longer, than it should, is a (more or less ...) direct indicator of insufficient clotting ... But I may be wrong ... last time I went anywhere near haematology was back in the late 1990s, so don't take my word for it ... [Edit: it should be noted that Hip Displasya is likely to come from the early cross-breeding with Rough Collies. It is a sad fact that many medium - large dogs, develop HD, such as German Shepherds, and specifically the - imho - insane breed 'standard' of the back legs being over extended to the rear ... HD may be alleviated through the use of hydrotherapy*, although the exact efficacy isn't known, and, for dogs, can get rather expensive (unless you happen to live close enough to a beach with body temperature waters, for most of the year ...), but, if you do have a dog with it, ask your vet, and, if you have decent pet insurance, that may cover it ... But, that being said, I'm hardly surprised that both the American Kennel Club, as well as our, British, counterpart, seems highly reluctant to deal with genetic issues with dogs. One only has to look at the disaster which are the brachycephalic breeds (viz. Pugs ...), to see how glacially slow they are at tackling a severe issue, that effects even cats. The only solution is surgery, and even then, as with Pugs, brachycephalic dogs have so many other issues. A Pug I met once was a friendly little soul, whom came from a shelter, but oh boy; aside from the panting, he couldn't lay down, on any surface, save the orthopaedic bed, the owner told me, as his hip pain was just too much, so he just went from sitting to standing, and back again ... you can tell by his excess panting - even for a Pug - the poor little guy was simply exhausted ... The tragedy is, pure bred dogs (and some cats ...) where not so badly affected, going back even 100 years ago, and certainly 200. It was when people, whom ought to have known much better, had they had the same understanding we have now, tried to decide what made for a 'perfect' example of a particular breed, did intergenerational interbreeding began ... and now, unfortunately, owners are reaping that ... BTW, a Sheltie is, if my living arrangement was twice it's current size, one of my dog breeds I would love to have, but my first go to would be a rescue shelter, to find a similar looking dog, as though s/he may be a 'mutt', the more genetically diverse a dog is, the less chance - abet not 100%, guaranteed - that they have the same genetic afflictions that comes with pure bred dogs ... ... hence the push, especially by the British Veterniary Association, of 'adopt, don't shop', because of the insane level of genetic issues that comes with pure bred cats, dogs, and many other companion animals ... (*= with personal experience of hip, and knee, pain, from an chronic, acute, condition (fibromyalgia ...), hydrotherapy isn't cheap, but the session I did have, helped with the pain, although the cost, aside from the monetary one, was absolutely fatigue the next day ... fortunately, due to that pain, and much besides, I'm disabled, albet at the too young an age of 47 ... to be told I may never work again was almost as bad as the pain ...)]
I had my sheltie for years she was so smart played tricks or treats for frozen green beans she loved that fun time every day same time she would let me know it's time by sitting by the refrigerator
They are very much a shadow, unless she has her sheep for health though PLEASE keep an eye out for a Mucocele of the membrane of the the gallbladder I lost my previous sheltie to this its not common but... still a scary factor. if you have a sheltie over 5 please check with your vet about this!
I have a sheltie, she's seems to understand when I talk to her, or tilts her head to show that she doesn't understand advanced math, well neither do I, maybe that's on me.
We had a beautiful Shealty his name was Jake smart a could be not hard to train never did he mess in the house loved him to pieces lost him at eleven and a half don’t what happened he was so happy had a bath and hair cut an he jump red around when I went and got him the nexted day I his shots too he was listless and the and it was down hill from there broke my heart he was eleven and a half lost my baby now I had another little dog has passed too his name was Simon he was a Chiihwahwa he was 10 and half smart as could be miss him terrible
Judy Hunter....My Sheltie Wendy was hypersensitive to shots. She would become listless for two days before recovering. She could only tolerate one or two shots at a time. I hope a severe allergic reaction didn't cause your Sheltie's death Yes it is more expensive to spread out the shots out over many Vet visits but safer for your Sheltie
Shelties ancestry is the toonie that was a little farm dog and a icelandic yakki dog. They are very werry of strangers and other dogs if not raise with them. My Sheltie I lost in Jan. 2022 at the age of 13. I miss him so much. they love their family, but they also are very loyal, but they can go more towards one owner. I had an old-time scotch collie but I preferer my Sheltie. I feel the AKC ruin a lot of good Breeds. That is not true what they say about the size of a sheltie. mine was 18" tall and weighted 35 pounds. I had A DNA test to see if he was a purebred and he was. it is the AKC and other like them saying that they should only be 14"to 16" tall to be a purebred. Shelties have Boeder Collie in them and others. So yes you can get a sheltie bigger than a show dog. These AKC do not know what the hell they are talking about and how many breeds have they ruin by changing who the breed really was in the first place to suit the rich people in America. Admit it the AKC and others like them only care about what they want not about what the breed really was and now we have the dogs like the pug with so many health problems. The pug had a longer muzzle and a little bit taller until the AKC got a hold of it. They do not breed for health of the breed but for looks only. I just do not understand why people cannot leave the breed along and just except they why they were. look at the Chihuahua the true breed is so much bigger than the ones people have today. just like the mini-Aussie, all the mini-Aussie was started from a rut of the litter. there never was a mini-Aussie. My Sheltie may have been taller than most, but he was just as good or even better than any show dog and did not have so much stress.
Okay. I'm already sick of hearing your BS about how agile these dogs are! My cat is way more agile and can finish the course way faster. Heck, you won't even see her she so fast and agile! Wait, I'm sorry. I thought she ran the course. She was at Sears! lmao

I believe wholeheartedly they are. I've heard several testimonies where God showed people in dreams or visions that their dog was in heaven. 💕
Lovely story

i am going to get a sheltie so i am watching videos about them all day
How is your sheltie? I am thinking to get one.
@@rn9167it’s extremely worth it, I’ve grown up with shelties and I have 2 currently. Such a good breed

Don't say don't buy from a breeder it's not the dogs fault !It should just be love to all dogs! They all deserve it!
The best dog in the world, companion extraordinare!
Had shelties all my life very sweet and smart dogs .all of my shelties lived to be over 15 my last one was one month shy of 17

great for being loyal and protective
I agree. I once put the German Shepard in this category but after owning a sheltie there is no comparison.
Shelies are the best. They can tell if you are feeling depressed or happy. My late sheltie Phoebe was there for me when I was in a dark place.

Might get one hope it gets along with my rabbits, turtles
My sheltie was 12yeats old but unfortunately she got bladder cancer, I miss her soo very much it's been 2yrs ago, it still hurts
So cute
Yes they bark..but are really good with kids ( discounting the fact that she nipped @kids heels running around the backyard) she was a great dog for my kids to grow up with..sometimes funny..loved to go on a sled in the snow..we also got a collie..we never had a break-in. Too bad Sheltie got cancer @ 11 yrs old.
I have 3 shelties. My license plate is “TOONIES” on my car. My first Sheltie was named Toonie. I live in Arizona USA
Wonderful dogs
..mine was not a barker as indicated
He was super sweet sensitive and very intelligent and always always cheerful
Must be nice, ours barks her head off 😂
fun fact they're in the top 5 rarest dogs in Shetland and they're are none ever used in
Shetland for herding and sheepdogging, when see they are always heeling to they're.owner and are quite protective as it's in they're nature
I saw Biscuit and Cricket in this video!
I'm curious, are there mini shelties being bred? I sometimes see shelties that are very small, really tiny.
Our pedigree sheltie was comparatively quite large, in fact he was once described as a "small male collie" when he was nicked by the dogcatcher :)
Having had one Collie and five Shelties, I crave number six, but it must be an adult.
Miss my sheltie
They're gorgeous dogs. Still love my Border Collie though 😍
I just got myself a 2 month old, and after the 2 days of training. He's already learned how to sit
That's great and by next week your fur baby will be fetching your slippers! 😅👏
@deborahallen3318 you called it😂
Our Sheltie (Dusty) just passed away on Sunday. Any body have any thoughts? thanks
My Granny had a sheltie called Bonnie who was completely strawberry blonde in colour. She was just the best dog.
Hi. I am thinking about getting a Sheltie as my first dog. I have some questions maybe someone will help me:
I did Sheltie rescue for 10 years. The .ain reason they were given up was because people got them for looks without learning about the breed.
Don't let barking be exaggerated. Shelties do not bark that much unless they are being mistreated. Furthermore Shelties have baby voices. Grooming is not a big issue. But is is a pleasant task because it is time you can spend with the Sheltie
My Sheltie is great in nosework 😊
i have one that is cute and lovely :3
they're the fucking best
Collie eye anomaly, Hip displasya, Von willebrand disease do not just spontaneous develop. This is in the DNA of the dog. A reputable preservation breeder would test for this and many more before breeding a dog. They would not breed animals with this or MDR and MDR1
Other that this information this is a great video to introduce people to the breed
(*= with personal experience of hip, and knee, pain, from an chronic, acute, condition (fibromyalgia ...), hydrotherapy isn't cheap, but the session I did have, helped with the pain, although the cost, aside from the monetary one, was absolutely fatigue the next day ... fortunately, due to that pain, and much besides, I'm disabled, albet at the too young an age of 47 ... to be told I may never work again was almost as bad as the pain ...)]
how many hours of the day you can leave an adult sheltie? Thanks!
I have a baby one it's very playful
I had my sheltie for years she was so smart played tricks or treats for frozen green beans she loved that fun time every day same time she would let me know it's time by sitting by the refrigerator
They are very much a shadow, unless she has her sheep for health though PLEASE keep an eye out for a Mucocele of the membrane of the the gallbladder I lost my previous sheltie to this its not common but... still a scary factor. if you have a sheltie over 5 please check with your vet about this!
THts my dog😊
My shelties are very friendly but i trained them to watch my daughter and bite anyone being aggressive near her.
They bark a lot, now I am rethinking
They are easily trained to keep it in check.
I have a sheltie shepherd
They are so cute!
I don't think he mentioned that epilepsy is common in this breed, especially if from a bad breeder. Rescues and shelters, please!
I'm wondering if #1 is true. From what I've read they're not crossed or descendants of the collie. I believe on the AKC website it states this. 🤔
I know adorable
I have a sheltie, she's seems to understand when I talk to her, or tilts her head to show that she doesn't understand advanced math, well neither do I, maybe that's on me.
They catch on to exactly what you're spelling in a short time too!
I want a sable sheltie
I stopped eating my food when he said scotland, I got excited to go pick one up but remembered my mom is broke lol
I wanted one😭
I wonder what this Sheltie is eating at 1:50. Hope it is not avocado
Tennis ball freak ? Mine likes to fetch a volleyball
They shed like FUCK!
@@gsm4708 I don't know how bad a Husky sheds. Two under coats a year? They're certainly a lot more trainable than a Husky.
I hope a severe allergic reaction didn't cause your Sheltie's death
Yes it is more expensive to spread out the shots out over many Vet visits but safer for your Sheltie
It’s the shots read jabbed by Brett Wilcox same for man and animal
Can shelties use pee pad forever or are they too big ?
I have one of those fat things, my Sheltie eats a lot and bites a lot! he’s so greedy he will eat anything he can find/ reach

Okay. I'm already sick of hearing your BS about how agile these dogs are! My cat is way more agile and can finish the course way faster. Heck, you won't even see her she so fast and agile! Wait, I'm sorry. I thought she ran the course. She was at Sears! lmao
