Coaching Connor McDavid w/ Jay Woodcroft | 32 Thoughts Pop-Up Edition
For almost 20 years, Jay Woodcroft has held several coaching positions. From being Mike Babcock’s video coach in Detroit to Todd McLellan’s assistant in San Jose and Edmonton, Woodcroft now finds himself leading the high-powered Edmonton Oilers after spending four seasons with their AHL team, Bakersfield Condors. Jeff and Elliotte chat with Jay about his playing career and how he found himself behind the bench, coaching McDavid and Draisaitl, the length of a good video session, his style of play, coaching 3-on-3 hockey, lessons he picked up along the way from other great coaches, video sessions with Yzerman and Datsyuk, and he talks about his favourite podcasts.

#NHL #EdmontonOilers #32Thoughts - Спорт
Man, I love Jay... Such an intelligent, personable, and well-spoken guy. I feel fortunate that he's coaching my favorite team.
As an Oiler faithful fan - and also a longtime admirer of Dave Tippett - I immediately took to Jay's outward intelligence and cerebral outlook of things. This interview only reinforces my first impression. Jay's a really clever, cool dude ... 😎
🍻
@@Mitch-ui8ps I think Tippet cared more about the smoke he was about to suck in on intermissions
I actually met Jay on the weekend at an event in Edmonton. He came across as such a personable guy and repeatedly said how well my staff member did. Got the chance to shake his hand and tell him how well the team is playing. Great to meet him and just a great guy. This interview shows it well
Who else wanted this interview to continue... amazing coach.
Yes, looking forward to Part 2, and 3, and...
Jay is a lucky guy, being McDavid's coach means he gets a front row seat to history in the making. Woodcroft is a great coach. He took a struggling team last season and turned them into Stanley Cup contenders.
Evander Kane helped "a little" too, but Jay is awesome, i agree .
I wouldn't call Jay lucky. He worked really hard to get where he's at.
What a fantastic interview...watch his media interviews everyday, but one of the things I love about Jay is how eloquently he speaks and his photographic memory !
He's so diplomatic and a great people-person.
This was a fantastic interview and a great view into Jay's mind - he seems brilliant and confident! Great interview, glad I watched it rather than listened while cooking supper later! :P
I meant to listen earlier and didn't find the time. I am currently listening also while cooking supper. Glad I watched the video instead.
Woody has been a breath of fresh air to the Oilers and I am so happy we have him.
A great communicator is the most important asset for a coach.
Jay is an exceptionally well spoken human being. When he talks, you want to listen and learn what he has to say. As an Oiler fan, feel very fortunate to have this guy in our corner. Remarkabel human being. Imagine what kind of world we would live in if more people were like him.
Jay Woodcroft seems like an exceptional coach very intelligent and has put in the time and somebody players want to play for
Jay Woodcroft is a breath of fresh air after years of holding a breath. His intelligence & Hockey IQ are unquestionable, and his steadiness in communication is admirable. I hope the Oil keep him for a long time and empower him to develop the team his way.
This team is special man
Thanks for having this interview!
Great interview. Woodcroft has a gift for the gab.
Leon is a sniper with a scope 😂
I already listened to the audio pod twice, and now I see it on video?! Hell yeah!
The one thing no one ever mentions is the contribution by glen gulackson our offensive coach!…he has done a tremendous job with our offense year after year!
Gulutzan* 😂
The best & most handsome coach in the league. I’m sure it doesn’t get any better then that. Plus he coaches the goat himself. What a stud!
Let's be real. He ain't the most handsome. Good coach, not an attractive looking dude though lol.
@@Greenfrom3 dont get too raddled regarding a compliment on a mans appearance lmaoi
@@Greenfrom3 if your type is seth macfarlane then hes a 10 😏
@@Tribuneoftheplebs maybe seth mcfarlane and seth rogan had a love child ha ha
Jay is so beyond smart and Jeff really did a great job of asking the right questions. Great interview boys.
🍻 from Edmonton..
Best HeadCoach in a very long time
D'excellentes questions posées par les intervieweurs --- regardez-les boire les paroles de Woodcroft. Très bonne entrevue!
Very well spoken and seems very intelligent, and clearly has a genuine love for the sport.
How did they get the man to sit?
😂😂 True story!
Leon finds space like no one else 🎯😁
Brilliant guy
Heard about 32 thoughts but Wow i can't wait 😂 for the rest of this🇨🇦
I love this honesty 😁
Woody the goat
Im not an oiler fan at all, but Jay is the perfect coach for this team, they sure mesh well together and seem to have brought out much more success since hes been hired. Enjoyed this interview.
What a level headed coach😁✔
Just a class act guy! I am blessed to be friends with him and his family!
That's pretty cool
A Scholar , Athlete, and Gentleman. This is the least “hockey coach” interview I’ve ever watched.
Evidence : I came away with a new history podcast to consume 😊
Thankyou for this 🇨🇦✔😮
Very insightful, intelligent coach. Great interview. Go Oilers Go!
Great interview... Dan Carlin hardcore history WW1 felt more vivid than any movie I've ever watched on war.
High quality .... 10 out of 10 Jay Woodcroft.
As a Wings fan, since my team is struggling I tend to really root for the Oilers now. They really remind me of the greatness of my Wings. Not to mention the guys in the organization like Woodcroft, Kenny Holland who were there in the Red and White when we were great.
Great Vid!
10 years and many cups from now let's check back and see how this ages.
Coaching McDavid!?! "Are your skates sharp? Here's the puck".
Yeah no
This is awesome 😁
This interview was so good I listened to it first and then watched it later. I wanted Woody as a coach for the Oilers for so long and I was glad Holland came to his senses and got rid of Tip when he did.
The OIL are Lucky to have him ! ( imo
well Jay seems like a great guy, I hope I get to meet him soon!
Love this coach 😂🇨🇦
Who would of thought that a younger coach that still has colour in his hair would be better than most coaches left from the 2000s that are still in top coaching positions
Another great question 😅
Marek you nailed it 🎯😁
i love this man
Very cool journey!
As a Oiler fan since the 70s I have no reason to believe the oilers don’t have the best coach in the teams history right now in Jay Woodcroft the future is bright in oil town.
The Oilers and Oilers fans alike are so lucky this guy is at the helm. Only a matter of time now.
Great question ✔
In Jay we trust, this is the guy.
Nice Sid pull! I didn't do too good on my box of OPC...did get an ace of hearts and a Calder trophy patch. But it is cheap so might get another box! Thanks for the rip!
New Glen Sather
The greatest thing about these Oilers is they could care less about individual accomplishments 🎯😁
Those mics aren't really there, are they?
Short and sweet ⚡🇨🇦
stud coach
Stevie Y snipped us 😂😂
Leon is a Leader 😁
This is inspiring. Great interview.
This podcast legendary 😂

Someone link the WWI podcast he was talking about
Geeat attitude is key✔
Boy's on the bus 😂are back😂
We need characters in our game 😂🥊🇨🇦🇺🇸
Go oilers, baby
W 32 Thoughts W Woodcroft
There's a reason why Woodcroft has helped bring so much success to the Oilers: both his IQ and EQ are higher than virtually any other Oilers coach.
Agree, IQ+EQ, bang on.
Great interview. Woody has definitely paid his dues to be a head coach in the NHL.
👍 He racked up a good CV, and he understands and loves sports.
Great question 😂😂
Who are you talking to? Do you have dementia?
Ken Holland thankyou ✔
Tough question 😂😂🇨🇦
Perfect😂
Adam graves the kid line🥊🇨🇦
That portends a way forward 😂✔🇨🇦
What a handsome, handsome man.
Isn't babcock coaching university hockey now ? wow what a 360 for these guys !
Love Kane he will produce just what we need 🥊😁✔
Kurri had this gift with Gretz🥊🇨🇦
Jay honestly seems like he would be the baby of the family 😅ilhsm!
Until watching this, I hadn't realized how little I've actually liked the Edmonton Oilers coaches the past 20 years. Jay's a good egg...
That power move after winning against Calgary was also pretty endearing
Woodcfot and Dan Carlin mentions? wow,,,,,I'm gonna go with woody for now, he's on fireeeeee
My first impression of JW as an assistant was that he was too soft-arsed to be a head coach. But the typical NHL player has evolved, and now I see he has the qualities to become one of the NHL's best. Yeah those Ferraris in the driveway help, but I think he'd be good at the helm at any point of a team's bust-boom cycle.
One thing that helps is the locker room in Edmonton isnt young and immature. These are the best players in the NHL and all they want is to win the Stanley. They dont need a hard ass coach because McDavid, Leon, Nuge, Nurse are big enough voices in the room. Not all teams are blessed with 4 guys that could all wear the C.. (lookin at you Calgary with 0 guys I would make the captain 😄.) I think thats a team that really needed a Sutter and thats why he did well last year.
This stable lockeroom is also why I wasnt worried about Evander Kane and wanted him badly. Those 4 guys would be able to work with him and keep him on the straight and narrow
@@Tribuneoftheplebs I'll believe that they are not immature when they prove it. So far so good.
@@Tribuneoftheplebs well that didnt age 3 days lol sutter just got fired!!
@@dana102083 not Sutters fault that Hubby scored 50 points or that Kadri basically stopped trying at the end of the season!
Woody is a beauty.
😂this is gold 😂
I love 3 on 3 😂😂
You prob made them $20 with all your comments lol
where did Seth Mcfarlane learn so much about hockey?
And the Babcock coaching tree continues... now if they all could get Stanley Cup rings as HCs
Go oilers baby
wow hes so handsome
I suggest we all built ourselves our own way. Ton pique, que ce soit un dame, un as, un 2, j'men balance.
You need posession on 3 on 3 ⚡✔🤣
Love paul maurice ✔
WOW😂
We re lucky to have him in Edmonton.
