Jaz Shelley scored 10 of her season-high 23 points in the final five minutes to help Nebraska rally from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to an 82-79 win over No. 2 Iowa on Sunday afternoon.
Playing in front of a school-record, sellout crowd of 15,042 at Pinnacle Bank Arena and a FOX national television audience, the Huskers trailed 69-55 at the end of three quarters before Shelley, Logan Nissley, Natalie Potts and Kendall Moriarty combined for all of Nebraska's 27 fourth-quarter points to rally Nebraska to its fourth victory over a top-five opponent in school history.
The win matched a 103-99 3OT win over No. 2 and eventual national champion Baylor at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Jan. 12, 2005, for the highest-ranked foe Nebraska has ever defeated in women's basketball.
Moriarty scored the first two of the fourth quarter for the Huskers before Potts, who finished with 14 points and six rebounds, scored six straight for the Huskers to trim the Iowa lead from 14 to eight at 71-63 with 6:11 left. Moriarty scored he second bucket of the quarter to make it a two-possession game at 71-65 with 5:20 remaining. Moriarty finished with seven points.
Shelley played the biggest role, going 2-for-3 from three-point range in the fourth quarter and 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the closing minute to seal the victory to help the Huskers improve to 16-8 overall and 8-5 in the Big Ten. Iowa slipped to 22-3 and 11-2 in the conference.
Shelley's three-pointer with 4:39 left pulled Nebraska within 74-68, but Iowa's Kate Martin answered with her second three-pointer of the quarter to push Iowa's lead to 77-70 with 3:20 left. Martin finished with 20 points, including 4-of-8 three-pointers, but did commit seven turnovers.
Nissley, a freshman from Bismarck, N.D., then buried her third three-pointer of the game before Martin committed a turnover for the Hawkeyes. Nissley was then fouled by Caitlin Clark on a three-point shot with 2:13 left. Nissley, who finished with 15 points and a career-high seven rebounds, made 2-of-3 free throws to cut the Iowa lead to 77-75.
Neither team scored for the next 1:42 until Shelley splashed her fifth three-pointer of the game with 31 seconds left to give the Big Red its first lead of the game at 78-77 and send the Husker crowd into a frenzy.
Clark, who finished with 31 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, then missed a three-pointer, and Maddie Krull secured the defensive rebound for the Huskers and called timeout.
Shelley was fouled by Gabby Marshall with 19 seconds and calmly stepped to the line to sonk both free throws to extend the Nebraska lead to 80-77.
Iowa answered with a basket from Hannah Stuelke just one second later after a timeout to advance the ball to the front court. Stuelke, who finished with 15 points just days after getting a career-high 47 in a win over Penn State, then fouled Shelley. Nebraska's graduate guard from Australia again stepped to the line and sank a pair to put the Big Red up 82-79.
Clark's three-point attempt with nine seconds left was off the mark, and a second three-point chance from Martin with six seconds left also misfired to close out the Nebraska comeback.
Alexis Markowski contributed her 14th double-double of the season with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to help keep Nebraska within striking distrance through the first three quarters. Although she did not score in the fourth period, Markowski contributed three rebounds, three of her season-high four assists, and one of her three steals in the game.
Darian White and Jessica Petrie each contributed four points for the Huskers to complete the scoring.
For the game, Nebraska hit 42.5 percent (31-73) of its shots from the field, including 10-of-31 three-pointers (.323), while connecting on 10-of-14 free throws (.714). Nebraska outworked Iowa on the boards, 45-38, and won the turnover battle, 16-13. The Huskers were plus-six on the glass and plus-four in turnovers in the decisive second half.
Iowa hit 45.5 percent (30-66) shots from the floor, including 10-of-32 threes (.313), while going 9-for-15 from the free throw line (.667).
Nebraska returns to Big Ten road action to face its second straight top-five foe when the Huskers face No. 5 Ohio State on Wednesday, Feb. 14. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio is set for 6 p.m. (CT) with live coverage by Peacock. The game can also be heard across the Huskers Radio Network, including Huskers.com and the Huskers App. - Спорт
Too much time spent talking about the record by the announcers while a talented Nebraska team snatched the win! Should have been talking about the defense shutting things down! And "no foul" in the final :20??? Watch the face of the ball handler. Hit right on the cheek...
I MUTE every Iowa game for that very reason.
Good point too much emphasis on one scorer as if she is the only person on the court this is a team game built on strategy and tactics.
Talented indeed and came to ball I might add
Absolutely.
Its always the CC show🙄even last year when they played LSU all the reporters talked about was CC and only showed CC family in the crowd constantly to me it’s a slap in the face to other players
Proud of the Women Nebraska team! Stop focusing on CC and acknowledge how great of a game it was.
Wow, this Nebraska team is gonna break a few hearts in March.
They are intriguing
I doubt it. They played this game like a tournament game, but the difference in the tournament will be every other team will be playing like it's a tournament game, too.
Nebraska couldn't stop Clark in the first three quarters but was mostly playing straight up on D and were just barely able to stay with Iowa enough offensively. In the fourth, Nebraska flowed between a box+1 and a triangle+2 defense, and Iowa had absolutely no idea what to do against it. It completely took Clark out of the offense. When Clark is taken away, Iowa has nothing else to go to, and Iowa's staff did nothing to make the kind of adjustments necessary to force Nebraska to break it. That was a masterclass of how to win as the underdog through preparation.
Nebraska saved that defense for the 4th. That is something you very rarely see in games today. Great job by the coach.
Don't matter what happened in the beginning it matters what happens in the end. Nobody can stop Clark but she evidently can be contained. Her teammates don't seem to know how to play without her doing everything, somebody else has to step up during containment. Instead of watching your star get in the game.
Why we not talking about Clarke's push off each time she's being closely defended and gets away with it. Smh once the calls start coming against her you'll see she is not hard to contain!!!
@@KarenJohn-mh6xo she pushes off because that's what the refs allow her to do. As an opposing coach you have to constantly remind the refs of her offensive push off that should be called fouls.
@@KarenJohn-mh6xoexactly she’s ALWAYS pushing then looks all confused when other teams “foul” her it’s so annoying meanwhile the other team is down the court scoring while she’s pouting🤭
Congrats Nebraska! You did well tonight. Keep it up!
IOWA fans really wanted a WIN and CC break a record but didn't happen so let's all move on and see the next game and cheer them all at the hawkeye arena okay? Keep healthy comments guys no one deserve hates in this world. We all humans, we have strength and weakness. IOWA Team good luck on your next game, much love from PH!
So how do you feel abt the LSU hate ?
@@laprisa442 - that's OK, just don't hate Clark or Iowa, OK?
@@waldolydecker8118 i dont, sir im not iowa or sc typa "fan" who hate teams for being successful nd black bffr
They are making Catlin work for all her points today
Thank you for these videos!
My pleasure!
Yeah thank you it's beautiful to be able to keep up with all the top teams with these condensed versions...glad I found your channel
Clark plays lazy D. Time for some endurance running.
I've typed that same sentiment since last season...
Take away Clarke's 3pts and she's just for the sweat 😂. I say it all the time, she gets away with using her hands to push off defenders
Actually Caitlin NEEDS to Start Hitting Weight Training, to Improve Her Speed, Power, Stamina and Explosiveness for 4 Full Quarters. That’s what Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Steph Curry LEARNED.
@@gualbertogarcia305 - no need to do that when they already promoting her as the greatest thing since sliced bread. With that kind of promotion behind you, no need to actually do any of that hard endurance workout stuff - she gets paid without it.
Clark didn’t need to shoot that 3 with 28 seconds left, too much time on the shot clock for a play like that.
C Clark was exhusted
The announcers had nothing to do with the loss. Catlin is on pace to do something really special and they were talking about it; every is talking about it! Quit hating! The fact is that Catlin passed to much in the forth. Iowa made a ton of mistakes as a team, and Nebraska was better than usual; great placers like Iowa brings that play out of you!! They had the game; they simple became complacent at the end
Great players are players who are active on BOTH sides of basketball. Defense is such a lost art because everyone wants to be flashy and hit a 3 from half court for shock value but defense will always win championships.
That's why she went home ringless last year didn't think playing defense had any merit.
How iowa center their game around one player is the Sense i don't see and the fact that the other team mates are just okay to be assisting her achieve her goals is another discussion.
No individuality, just Clark
CAITLIN CLARK COULD NOT HIT A SHOT IN THE 4th QUARTER. THIS WAS UNUSUAL FOR HER.
She stopped scoring so she could break the scoring record at home duh. She didn't want to break the scoring record at Nebraska plain and simple. This whole thing has been planned out in advance for a while now.
Duh, Caitlin SHOULD have HIT Her last 3point Shot in the game, to SHUT the game Down, duh.
Kaitlyn wanted to break the record at the home crowd
yeah, fugg scoring to win the game for the team; she'd rather wait to celebrate her individual stats at home. Way to disrespect the game.
Are you going to post the Utah and Oregon game?
Hopefully on monday. Lots of top 25 games to get through
She is exhausted
Clark still not being called for pushing off, and she still thinks she's the 4th referee on the floor.
She does get hacked a lot
She pushes off a lot
Caitlyn here looks tired
She was really sick this game
It’s always funny to see Clark pouting constantly looking for free throws meanwhile the other team is down the court scoring she has to stop the fake ass foul shit every time the other team scores in her face bluder has trained her to be a professional victim🤭
Lol, maybe focus a little more on the actual game next time Fox.
Iowa is going to be fine. Any team can have a cold game, half, or quarter.
Good win, with "a little" help 🙂 These refs are ready for the NBA (already making so many bad calls)
Like that say, crybabies always blame "the refs." Some guys lnever learn...no fool like an old fool.
Bluder OUT!
If the games on the line at the end, l'm fouling Hannah for sure!
Oregon state vs Colorado??
Working on it first thing in the morning, Monday upload #1
Iowa not making it past the sweet 16.
U may be right but watch they are going to try and put them in a easy bracket
This aged well
@@CaitlinClark22Fan she didn’t win the game that mattered most, never does. That fact always ages like fine wine.
Iowa is a one-trick pony. If Catlin is off, the team loses.
As soon as she gets the record, she’ll play more relaxed from them on. Don’t expect her to be too “off” from the Michigan game and on. 9 pts is nothing.
@@frankiek2269bro stop making excuses for them blowing a 14 point lead in the 4th quarter and on top of that they still have to go to Indiana and end the against Ohio State and you acting like it's gonna be a cake walk 💀💀
@@frankiek2269 - Michigan is a nothing burger, unranked just like Nebraska...the Big Ten as a whole is the weakest competition of the Top Power 5 conferences - The Pac-12, SEC, ACC and Big -12 are far more difficult to play in than the Big Ten. Compared to the other top ranked teams, Iowa benefits from playing against far weaker teams...the weak competition keeps them artificially high in the rankings.
@@waldolydecker8118 They aren’t tougher conferences. And when a team shoots far below their average percent, the odds will even out over games. You think they’re going to have two bad shooting games in a row? That’s a lotta stupid there. I doubt Iowa is losing another game this regular season up to the Sweet 16. At that point, anything can happen. A team that normally shoots 45% can all the sudden have a 55% night. That happens all the time. That’s why we have the word upset. I can’t remember the game a little way back, but a girl that normally shoots 20% from the 3 had a 7/8 night and helped her team upset a better team. I think it was UConn that they beat. Even though that isn’t tough to do this year. I’ll be surprised if that squad even makes it to the Sweet 16 this year with all their injuries.
Iowa did not need a 3 shot just a lay up
NEWSFLASH to Bluder and IA - it is NOT about politics, PR or "having fun" or "expanding the game". It's about the best play from the greatest girls bball team ever. Bluder letting those girls blow 10 to 15 pnt leads and Bluders catering to PR bs vs this great team is getting OLD.
"the greatest girls bball team ever" lol such ignoramuses the Clark marketing campaign is bringing into the game, geez.
Ur hilarious greatest girls b team ever? Even u don't believe that
Unless we are talking about high school basketball - these are young women! ... Just sayin' ... Whenever, I hear the repeated use of "girls' in sports, I picture a bunch of middle or high schoolers running round ...
it's possible ohio vs ohio state full game thanks
Here are my thoughts on Iowa Women's Basketball, if anyone cares... What's happening with Iowa Women's Basketball is a phenomenon. Everywhere they go they sell out arenas. People who have never been to a women's college basketball game in their lives come just to root against Clark and the Iowa team. The few games that Iowa has fallen were celebrated by people who never cared about women's basketball and will probably never go to another game. Every single team they play wants to destroy them. Their opponents shoot better than they ever shot, their scoring percentages are higher, and their bench players come in and score points they've never scored. The fact that Iowa has only lost 3 games this year, shows exactly how damned good this team really is. When they finally get into some games, ie tournament, where they want to destroy the other team worse than that team wants to destroy them, watch out. When they finally embrace the killer instinct, I do believe they will be unstoppable. Right now, it is absolutely unsustainable for Iowa to play every opponent like it's a tournament game, but that's exactly how every team is playing them.
Iowa coach so disrespectful them people because yall lost if thus was kim she be fired let them people have the moment
She hates when CC doesn’t win her games🤭
Jaz outplayed Clark, Iowa and Bluder, who purposely held Clark back today. So obvious, and pathetic. All about the glitz and hype.
Nebraska did a lot of flopping and beating up on Stuelke, but Iowa has to take up rebounding position and get those second chance points. Iowa will come right back; but no way they can win every one. Hurry back, Molly D.
Did Nebraska snatch a win or did the goat tank so she could break her record at home? Rather bush league for being a pretend goat. And so is a Clark Cam. Only the lame Fox network could think that up.Well that and the media swooning over the oxymoron that's Swifty Football.
U r correct Caitlin stopped scoring so she could break the record at home February 15th has been circled on the calendar for months now.
@@jasonkeith9317 and it cost them the game, just for her personal glory. Bush.
This doesn't age well. This announcer will have to live the rest of his career with recordings available of the nonsense he spouted late in the 3rd quarter and through most of the 4th quarter. Yes, he was being paid to hype Clark, but Nebraska's play made him look like an idiot.
stopwatch on that out of bounds play from Martin to Stuelke: 5:80 seconds. Not a close call that the refs missed.
These girls from Nebraska are well fed.
