You, sir, went the extra mile for we UA-cam iMac folks. Not only did you source the backlight but you've gone so far as to furnish the pin out for said led backlight. The Only reason to go to that effort is to help out a random person who you don't even know. How kind and refreshing a video you have graciously given to all in the community. Thank you, and thank you. In these UA-cam days full of self serving, full of ads, then sponsored by more ads, I am pleased to have accidentally come across your video looking to clean the dust out of my late 2015 i7 4gig vram IMac. Please keep up the good work, son. (You seem to be 1/2 my age). RM

Thank you! Just did the exact repair where the LEFT half of the screen was quite dark. The lower left SMD connector broke off the light panel. Used wire-wrap wire to create extensions and now the panel is working again. Thank you again for posting your concise process.

Hello and thank you for sharing your experience.
For my part, I tried the first solution of breaking the connector and trying to solder directly but it did not work.
So I was patient and disassembled the whole screen to make this repair.
The difference is that I didn't use thinner wires and connected the whole thing to the screen via heat-shrink tubing.
I directly soldered the flat cable to the printed circuit board, having glued it beforehand with a cyanoacrylate dot.
I took the opportunity to do this operation on each side and here is a wiring complement for the right side:
    D1+ D34- D2+ D35- D3+ D36-
And for those who would like to test each LED circuit, you should apply 36V DC voltage per 12 white LEDs in series and allow about 1A.

This video may or may not be what I’m looking for so I was going to ask a few questions. But first, I scanned the comments to see if they were already answered. This guy answered ZERO viewer questions! What is the point in posting a video like this if you’re not going to engage with your viewers and answer questions?! That’s stupid!

I choose the hard way as always and went for screen disasembly to solder the connector. Tryed to save aluminum tape, you cant just cut it and seal with electrical tape. When removing white plastic that holds connector i broke led lamp, just remove led strip and leave white plastic in place. Will order led strip now.

Good work! Which problem could it be when the LEDs turn off and on without reason? Greetings

Would this be basically the same process for the 2017 iMac 27 in? My iMac boots up, fan turns on and the startup chimes normally, but the screen is black and will not turn on. I took my iMac to my local U Break I Fix store and they said that the login name and round logo can be seen faintly. They couldn't pinpoint the exact problem, but they narrowed it down to a display replacement or replacing the backlight chip.

I have backlight issues too , familar with removing the panel and checking leds for diagnosis. My led 4 fails to light which makes me think the video card has gone. What do you think ?, My other 27 Imac boots and you get the bong but no screen image. So its booting but no backlight led on.

What size wire is that to solder on to the led strip?

When the backlight fails, can you still see the screen contents faintly like on other displays? I have a 27" iMac that seems to boot up fine, but the display is totally black.

  • @regisdrevon1554

Why make it simple when you can make it complicated...
Instead of destroying the plastic contactor, I put a drop of WD4O, for electrical contacts, two small wedges (mini nails) to force the contacts towards the welds. Adhesive, reassemble the screen, test, bingo!
