  • Shoutout to channel member David who was working on this today.
Ringo sticking: L rr L rr L rr L rr
Abraham Laboriel Jr. sticking: R rl R rl R rl R rl
Call me a heathen, but I quite like playing the Abe Laboriel sticking on gigs! It has a slightly rockier energy to me. But they definitely both have their place and distinctive feel. Obvs the Ringo sticking is the way to go if you want to keep it fully authentic to the original.
Practice-along versions for both sticking, plus “R ll R ll” (the “right handed version” of the Ringo sticking) up now on my Buy Me a Coffee members’ page, here: www.buymeacoffee.com/mikebarn...

Wow Mike, I've just been putting this song into my drumming, I thought I was completely doing it wrong but understand lots of variations. Love playing it, good one to try for me, I'm 51 and with work and being a mum, hard to get time to practice but 7 months in on my electric kit and from your amazing videos, I'm doing ok I think, thanks so much Mike 👍 x

Thank you very much for the useful lessons and advice. I'm always interested in your opinion on drumming technique. Could you share your experience of playing the song of the group The Sweet-Into the Night. I'm interested in the correct playing of the intro to the song. And also in the middle of the song. Best regards! Good luck!

Mike, thanks for your videos and your good vibes. I'm very curious about rimshots. I wonder when one choose to play in rimshots and when they don't. For example, here, what is the reason you play center hits ? Also, as a tiny baby drummer, I noticed playing in rimshots is far more aggro on my wrists. Is it true for everyone (since we hit a harder surface than the skin alone) or is it because I'm doing something wrong ?

Rimshots can be a great sound, and like so many of the answers to these type of questions, it depends on the musical situation, the band, the room you're playing in etc. Rimshot can be a great sound for a backbeat if you want some extra "cut" or "crack" to your snare sound. Then again it can be too much volume or tone-wise for the song you're playing. Not doing it here because I didn't feel it fit the vibe of the song. Makes sense that rimshots mean more force coming through the wrists as you're hitting a harder surface. Again, as is often the answer, build it up bit by bit, make sure your technique is good and you'll strengthen with practice (provided there's not some underlying physical problem). Thanks for watching.

@@MikeBarnesDrums I didn't think at all about the fact that we should play differently depending on the room. But I'm gonna take that in consideration. Thank you so much. By the way, I'm using your video about the base of the blues (the "sweet home chicago" one). It's giving me great pleasure to just go with that flow and trying to find some variations of it. So thank you very very much for that too.

Thanks for watching Steve. No, this is my studio, where I do face-to-face one on one sessions with channel members (buymeacoffee.com/mikebarnesdrums ). Wilburton in Cambridgeshire, two Cambridge Drum Company acoustic kits side-by-side. So, question for you, Mike. When I'm practicing my paradididdle diddle turn around, and I can hear a little difference in the sound when I switch to the left hand, is that an indication that I'm doing it wrong or is hearing a slight difference between left and right hand pdd to be expected? I'm right-handed. Cheers!

I mean, a v slight difference due to differences in the sticks etc is to be expected I'd say - but anything beyond that could be an indication that your grip/stick heights etc aren't even. Cheers Liz!

Yep I actually think that sounds pretty good and I tend to use that, but they definitely both work.
