Hayling Island Abandoned Railway Line (Then & Now)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 тра 2020
- This was a popular scenic railway that ran from Havant to Hayling island from 1865 to 1963. The bridge which crossed Langstone harbour needed to be completely replaced, With huge costs on a tight budget this wasnt variable and primarily the main reason for its closure. Today their is still some evidence of its bygone days and the old line is a popular footpath and nature reserve called the Billy Trail. The old railway continues to live on with walkers, cyclists and fond memories .

So evocative beautifully filmed.
thanks dale!!
Wow just rolled the memory back to my childhood, I knew every inch of Hayling Island. 🧡
yess I like it their to! can I ask did you actually go on it?
This is such a great video. It should be in the Havant archives for people to see and also to keep for future generations. I'm an amateur photographer and spend a lot of time photographing around Langstone Harbour. It is a very special place and I hold it deeply in my heart...Thank you so much for making and sharing this great piece of work.
Thanks Andrew!! Your welcome! such a fascinating place! Keep up the good work mate
Brilliant video - Well done - Sad that it has all gone now - Would make a wonderful tourist attraction and heritage railway if it was bought back.
Many thanks! 😊
Bloody marvellous
thanks mate great isnt it!!
@@MarkMahoney I've only just found your stuff! Excellent mate, loving your work.

Fantastic clip. I went to Coronation Holiday camp 3 times in the 70s. Great memories 🇬🇧🏴
Nice one mate! 🇬🇧👌👍
Well made video 👍 Would love to see it restored again.
Would be great wouldnt it! Just the bridge across the harbour may cost to much sadly
What a fantastic video, that is amazing how you put that together, wow never knew where the railway actually went, absolutely fascinating to watch, love the music too, very apt for it, so sad that it's all gone now, I now understand more about the signal post too. Beautiful, thank you for an awesome video, loved it.
Your welcome Kim! 🥀x
Absolutely fantastic I remember travelling on this train when I was very young and living in sun trap school hayling island 💕👌

The one and only busy girl lizzie ! 😊 Thankyou
When I lived in Havant many years ago, I walked the trackbed from Havant. Crossed onto Hayling and picked up the trackbed again. It was a great walk, and probably still is. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome mate
Excellent entertainment nice one 👍👌
Thanks Brian! Cheers mate🍻👍
I Wished The Railway Came Back As A Heritage Railway To Attract People For Tourist Seevice.
That be great wouldnt it!
Yeah. Call Someone Who Knows About Heritage Railways
One of the best now and then I've seen on railways. Excellent. You should have more views. And the music is well matched. Makes me want to jump into the photo.
Thanks mate! 👌👍 thanks for watching! I Really enjoyed doing this! All good vibes their,A fabulous 5mile walk with a goody bag on a sunny day
@@MarkMahoney Sounds like perfect bliss !!
I can only endorse what Kim B wrote here a year ago, what a wonderful evocative video, I lived along the coast a bit further as a child but never knew anything about Hayling Island or its railway line; you must have gone to an extreme amount of trouble to film the then-and-now shots, absolutely fascinating and also sad, as always, to see these lost bygone times.
Thanks for watching:))
Great video and lovely choice of music..😎👍
Thanks mate! Yes just love this song!
What a fabulously moving film… and the choice of music was brilliant. Excellent video.
Thanks for watching! Have you been? It's a good walk
Really beautiful. Sad it’s no longer there but the environment where it once was is stunning.
Yes the sea bridge and Langston road crossing was it's downfall
Anyone else watch these videos and feel nostalgic and a deep longing for a time that was never yours? I was born in 2002 but i find today’s world really quite depressing
Chin up it gets better ☺️
Hi, sadly it is more than a little miserable! I think as a 76 year old now, that what has gone nowadays is the real feeling of adventure and excitement, as in the two boys interest just looking out the train’s window! Now there is little aspiration for youth in these greed ridden times of decades of criminal governments taking for themselves, with little thought for people in general! Still, chin up and just look to nature for how things should be! Cheers
... made me cry, first time I saw it, the music with it is so apt as well, really emotive
It's so sad that it's gone now, but it's nice that they kept parts of it, like the signal.
Agree that you are very good at making these then and now/filming location clips. Great entertainment. Cheers.
Thankyou!! 👍👍👍
Great little video that....👍
Thanks James!
I can still remember the hauling billy train, being moved over to black gang chine on the Isle of Wight. And we all know what happened to it over there. Great video I really enjoyed
Thanks mate! What happened to it may i ask
The cliffs edge eroded away and the hayling Billy ended up at the bottom of it. Such a shame
One of the engines is now preserved as 'Freshwater' on the IOW Steam Railway
@@ukdaddydave6526 wow ok thats sad!
No I didn't & don't know that ! What shock horror ?! Shall look into that !
Mate your so good at this... very atmospheric music ... Jamie .Romsey Hampshire

@@MarkMahoney Oh Hello Mark ! You've seen my reply after a year ! & I've not replied to your last reply ! 🙉 You often pop into my head ! &/ Mind !! 😄 Why the wilted or drooping flower ?! Hope that's good, not sad !?! If it's about the music, it is very emotive, I showed my family this your video cos we've been attached to Hayling for generations & my sister started crying watching this, gets me too, your choice of music just adds X
I Adore this ! You touch hearts
This is fantastic
Honestly not gonna lie, and I know I'm 2 years late here, this brought a tear to my eye the first time I watched it, not out of sadness, (although the Gordon Lightfoot song was a damn good motivator for that) but more out of feeling an experience of nostalgia for the first time, I'll freely admit I was born in 97, long after the railway was closed down, and I never lived near the area or been to it. Although after seeing this, I'll have to plan a pilgrimage now.
For its intended purpose, this video is nothing short of a cinematographic masterpiece in its own right.
Cheers Dave nice one mate, thanks for wonderful comment! You can walk the whole old line from Havant (7miles ish) get the bus back, thanks again for watching 🤜🤛
@@MarkMahoney that's actually really nice, I'll have to take my Border Collie with me as I'm sure he'll love the long walk. :)
Look at the difference between the line that was operation years ago to the line which looked like this
This is brilliant
Thanks for tuning in
Love your work Mark
Thanks Michelle!! :))
That's my sister Mark ! I told you she also lives in Aldershot & I shared this with her today again after I got reminders (not that I forget!) of your recent additions about Richard O'Sullivan & another screen actor of the '70's ! (Wasn't he, the latter, in 'Mind your Language' &/ 'Mixed Blessings' ?) She saw my comments & it's nice to see hers here too now :-) And now she's shared this with our cousin in Suffolk who also used to spend a lot of time with us at Hayling & the Hayling Billy pub when we were young ! So your work is being spread ! I think and speak highly of you. Sorry not been back in touch for a while. Hope you and family are well and happy
:)) hello! Thankyou! Yes doing alright just very warm isn't it! Hope you doing ok x
@@MarkMahoney thank YOU for making it, it's beautiful
@@MarkMahoney yes, SO hot, dread tomorrow !
Where is the abandoned hayling island station because I really want to go there
Hello well north hayling station was behind the esso garage along path north of island, and the main station was on station road where the theatre is now. Sadly theirs not much left. The gates are in havant new lane/school lane and the level crossing was by old langstone station on corner main road and mill lane
Mark don't reply to leanor its a bot
Thanks mate!
