My flute went 20 years without a service (I know, bad eh?). I last had it serviced in 2010 - so that's 7 years ago! It really needs to go back again! Should be every 2 years, I believe!
The Flute Channel I had it repaired but it wasn't good so after having a broken flute for 2 years and wasting money I got a new one which was great.
between 400-1000$ for a complete overhaul, which is what you saw.

I am in middle school band and my teacher doesn't repair our instruments he just let's you sound horrible until you buy your instrument

Wow when I was in middle school we have two company's we rent from called Portmans and Pladd dot (I probably spelled the last one wrong). A repair person would come by every week shed ask our teacher who was having issues and she fixed our instruments on the spot! (if it was something small) in the end it's hurting your teacher more to have students with broke instruments.

I may quit band bc my mom wants me to do something that most of my family doesnt. They all did band so she wants me to try something new. But at the same time I wonder if I could become a saxophonist I love the sound it make. I play the flute bc I thought my cousin played it but she played the clarinet

I hope you haven't given up. Let me tell you a TL;DR story. This is for anyone on the fence about learning/continuing music, especially the kids.
I was at a music shop, pricing saxophones. A family was helping their daughter choose an instrument. She tried the sax, but she was a very tiny girl and because of her size, they decided on flute instead. I understand why they'd do this, but maybe she really wanted the sax and just meekly went along with her parents because kids do that. If her heart was set on that sax, she probably isn't going to succeed.
I wanted to play sax when we started band, but all the sax positions had been claimed. So I was placed on the clarinet, and I didn't want it. I've never wanted to play a clarinet, not once, ever. A turn of fate gave me a place in the sax section, and I'm so glad because I GUARANTEE you I wouldn't still be playing that clarinet today. No motivation. I might have quit band altogether. But two saxes, and a flute, AND a piano, have a place in my home today.
Also, children GROW. Size is a really silly reason not to play an instrument, unless you're a five-year-old.
Then, as she poked at the flute, the mother said something like, now, this isn't going to interfere with your gymnastics, is it? The daughter told her that it wouldn't.
At this point I stood there with my mouth hanging open. Why? Gymnastics is great, sports are good and healthy; but how long is this girl going to be able to keep doing it? She was about 11. The body ages, and your time of being a peak athlete, especially a gymnast, is very limited.
But teach a child music, and they can enjoy it for a lifetime. I am so grateful to my music teachers. The gift they gave me is precious. I use it every single day.

I don't know what "else" your family wants you to do, or WHY. Almost everyone in my family is a musician, and we share a bond because of that. But you should do what YOU want to do. Don't give up on music, please, just because it's what someone ELSE wants you to do. It's your life.
Also, if you play flute, saxophone is even easier to learn. Your finger positions are VERY similar to a saxophone's! That's why I have a flute in my living room. ;)
Sorry this was so long, but I am very passionate about this.
Every time I watch one of your videos I miss my flute so bad and wish I had not sold it many years ago. I was considering purchasing a used flute that the person said needed new pads. I thought I could just buy the felt, etc and repair them myself, but after watching this video, perhaps not. I can only imagine the years of practice and dedication it must take to play as beautifully and fluid as you do. It seems to flow out of you. Much respect.
You could buy a cheap one
I was lucky -- a fellow grad student found my first flute in a hock shop in NYC -- it was a Haynes commercial model, which I played for decades. Overhauled every 10 years or so. After retirement, I treated myself to a Haynes handmade, and I have a COA done every year, even though I am just a play-for-fun amateur. It makes a difference. I am lucky that I live right outside NYC so I can take it to the Flute Center. My last overhauls was done by Haynes, though, as part of my 'upgrade' from a French model to Plateau.
I'm not from Canada, so Twigg Musique looks like HEAVEN to me. There's literally no music store in my country that is quite like it. And as for my flute, I took it to my local music shop for repair, and it was repaired but when they returned it to me, the 2nd hole in the foot joint (c#) was raised a bit higher than the C and B holes. Anyway, I loved the video ❣️

My poor flute definitely needs its spa day! I got my flute second hand, and I'm sure it was adjusted before it was purchased. However, that was about 22 years ago, and it hasn't been to see a technician since. Plus, it has been in storage for the last 15 years since I've graduated and stopped playing consistently. I can only imagine how the sound and playability would improve if it got overhauled!
Happy to have found this channel. I haven't played in 13 years! I think it's time to start again. Maybe my husband should pick up the French horn again as well.

You are one lucky lady! That’s a very well equipped repair shop. I’m trained in repair of all brass and woodwind and worked in a few different shops and non of them are as nice as that one. I am definitely jealous of their equipment. My favourite part of repair has always been the players response (your ‘oh la la’ moment 😉) to playing their instrument after the repair is complete.

The Flute Channel I’m an hour out of Vancouver. I worked as a repair tech in a Vancouver store that’s no longer exists and 2 other shops in the Fraser valley. None of those 3 shops are as nice as that one.

Haha I have my moms flute and doing the math we’ve had it for 36 years and my grandparents bought it used so idk how old it was when they bought it. I don’t think it’s ever been in the repair shop since we’ve had it. My mom played it for 6 years I think and then it sat till I started it in 5th grade so I’ve been playing for 6 years and the only thing I’ve needed my band director to fix is a spring came off lol. It’s very tarnished, as you can imagine, but I kinda like the tarnished look (plus it’s really easy to tell which flute is mine when it’s laying by the other flutes in my band haha). It’s a Armstrong 104 and she treats me well haha.
I hav never gotten my flute repaired, at least I know. I am using my cousins flute, and hers is SUPER worn out, and super dirty has lots so minor flaws. So, I will be purchasing a brand new flute soon! I love your videos, and you play your flute super good!!!!

It is normal to play in a music store : it is the place to try some instruments...
Very important to play and check you’re happy with the work before you leave the shop!
I still count as a beginner so I never know if it's the flute's problem or if it's me. I don't even know if my flute is fake or not! I got it for a cheap price in China (don't judge), it was like 300 US dollars... It's Yamaha 211... Is that price possible???
With cheap instruments what you need to know is that they are not inherently bad. It is just that the manufacturing is not precise, so it might be bad and it might be brilliant its just RNG. Here is what you shuled do: get your hands on a honest to goodness good flute. Borrow from a friend or be real nice at a shop. Just play something once, or run a scale or something. And then you will know exactly what is what.
To answer your question on the price, it's hard to know if it's a real YFL-211 without seeing the flute. It might be, but at that price, it's either not really new or was sold out of Yamaha's QC reject pile (Meaning it's flawed). Or it could simply be overstock. Lower-end big brand flutes are made in China, and those same factories will sell (Sometimes rebranding) ones that failed quality control, similar to how dollar stores can sell name-brand products for a fraction of the price.
There's always a risk when it comes to buying products from China that are much cheaper than they should be.
Also have to remember the price conversion.
So your money might go further in China then where you are at.
Also keep in mind that just because its from "China" doesn't make it cheap. many Amazing players are in China.
lastly like someone else said. The main thing that makes an instrument cheap or not is the work put into it.
Most instrument cost comes from the fine tuning by hand. Some instruments you can just buy cheap and have them brought up to snuff elsewhere.
Determining if it's you or the instrument can be hard as a beginner and I feel your pain. I got a Buffet E11 Clarinet my 2nd month into learning it because of the same problem. Is it me or is it the clarinet? However, experience has now taught me that it's almost always me. About the only thing the instrument can do to make you sound bad is not seal right and that's easy to test for. If you have a note that doesn't want to lock in quickly, You play it over and over and see if it goes away. Then you play notes higher up in pitch so that pad isn't used, and see if the problem goes away. A problem pad will make certain notes wonky or not sound at all and more pressure on the pad, or a helper manually pushing on linked pads, can help find the culprit.
When you're a beginner, it's important you can trust your instrument. I think you should ask your teacher to play it : he'll tell you if your flute is ok or not.

People trying to use this to figure out how to fix a flute: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't buff it, whatever you do. Otherwise, great video, very informative, and pretty accurate.
I used to be a qualified jeweller & I cringe when I read or hear of totally inexperienced & naive people trying to repair or clean up items with absolutely no real knowledge of the materials they're made from. Unless you've bought a solid sterling-silver flute, or head-joint, it's very easy to polish off the silver-electroplating (guaranteed to be thinner on the cheaper flutes) down to the base-metal, but if your flute is valuable you shouldn't even consider servicing itself anyway!
also, never use any detergent dettol or any other sanitizer on your flute.they are very abrasive and will damage the flute.

It looks brand new! They did a really good job, there was a few flutists in my band class who needed a repair and they barely did anything. Band/orchestra companies cutting budgets?
Oh no! Some music repair shops take a huge amount of school flutes during high season ( July August ) and bring back the flutes to a playable level. If you took your own flute outside of that season, your flute will have more attention and look and feel better. We really love our shop and they really do take care of everyone. Even during the busy season believe it or not! Thanks for watching btw!
I don't play the flute (played the trumpet before) but this was still a interesting video because the instruments are related. I like instruments and collect guitars and violins + harmonicas. But now i want a flute .Now, the search for a flute that is retired and wants to stay in my colection starts .My son and friends get to play my instruments, (all but a Harding fele built by my wifes grandfather, no one can play on it) , they are designed to use . A good video for those who like high-level instrument care, thanks you for showing us this 🧐

I am hoping that my ability to play low c will improve after its first to me coa. I bought a secondhand Yamaha 385, which I love, but it needs 2 pads.
How often should you get your flute checked?
at least every 1-2 years if you play a lot. and ever 4-6 years your pads should get replaced. but a technician would know much more after looking at your flute.
The Flute Channel yeah, I got my my clarinet repadded after 3 years, probably similar for flute.
I'm here because I just tried to save the life of an old flute my mom just gave me. I used toothpaste and various craft tools, far from supersonic baths haha. All and all I think it was a mild success, it works again! I really love the flute, I hope I can buy a real one someday :)

If you have the budget, then I recommend renting one. Most music stores do renting until you’ve paid it off (or at least mine does but I think most do). My student flute took 4-5 years to pay off and was only $30 usd a month. $8 of it went to repairs and it came in useful about 4 years later. My flute practically got destroyed (by destroyed I mean water damage and overall weather stuff) over marching season but it only costs 20-40 dollars to get back in good condition
The 5th and 6th order harmonics are definitely louder and pleasant sounding after the repad. I've only recently gotten back into flute playing and I just got my first open hole and I was surprised to note that it has resonators under the pads. I didn't know they did that on Flute as the only other instruments I have with them are my 2 saxophones. My guess would be the resonator and pad leveling put some snap back into your harmonic timbre.

I was playing with my flute like throwing it up and catching itwith my flute and it fell I was so scared then I saw this part not attached well then I was panicking I was about to cry then I realized it wasn’t that bad and it could be fixed in seconds thank god it didn’t break fully I will never do that again
what is the process for maintaining and looking after wooden flutes? I personally prefer wooden flutes.
why do some wooden flutes sound so breathy? I’ve heard some wooden flutes being played and mainly what you hear is air rather than the sound of the flute.

I just had my Yamaha flute serviced, I'm sure it wasn't put through all these processes though, cost me £100 I wonder how much this video process cost, but then your flute is way more valuable (mine's worth about £450 think, whereas yours is $10,000)
You might've just needed a Clean, Oil and adjustment. Perhaps no pads had to be replaced yet.

How do you get into this craft? I would love to get into this and do it as my career
My Yamaha 222 instruction manual says on page 28: Maintenance required every two to three months: "Be careful when using key oil". Then it shows you how to apply it and the do and do nots of using it. So Yamaha is advocating to oil the instrument every 2 to 3 months but very carefully. In other words if you screw up your instrument then you did something wrong not the oil. It needs to be applied properly. I did some more research online and I read its also good to get a dropper with a fine needle to do this if the Yamaha Synthetic Medium Oil does not have that built in. The reason is a lot of these oil bottles drip out big drops and a needle dropper would be a lot smaller not causing overflow of the oil. Also that synthetic is the best type of oil you should use on it which Yamaha supplies. Can anyone tell me if their instruction manuals say the same thing in terms of advocating oiling their instrument more than once a year that you'd get with your COA? I'm not sure if this is standard among all flutes of different brands or models. I'm a beginner flutist and by no means an expert, so I welcome some feedback on this. I posted this message also in another vid that was posted called HornSmasher (name suits it, actually Flute Destroyer is better) in response to his once a month oil policy which seems excessive. I cringed A LOT watching that video as he was destroying his pads in the worst way possible.
When I press one of my keys another goes down with it that’s not supposed to. For example when I play and f it plays a e natural. It effects a lot of my notes but I don’t know why it started doing it.

One of my keys on my flute isn't working and it has been there at the repair center for MONTHS and they STILL haven't got anything done so I'm only giving them a few more days and few more weeks then they are done. If I have to then I will order a new flute and use that because I'm not waiting forever. If they ain't going to do their job right then they can leave.
Places shouldn't take that long. I would get it back and find another shop if possible.
I have a question about my flute. I currently have a colored closed hole beginners flute( I have had this since my freshman year of high school). And I wasn't sure if the middle joint of a flute supposed to start curving or not
Going entirely out of sequence, but I'm realizing my practice has been suffering from having a flute that is out of adjustment or needs more professional care beyond what I am able to provide it.

Curious as to what a general cleaning/adjusting of a flute that has no major issues might cost?
Usually wear and tear happens when playing the flute the fine line between regular adjustments and major repairs can be crossed quite quickly for a professional who is playing a lot. Regular maintenance ($300 and more) every year can reduce costs, but eventually you have to replace pads (600$ and upwards to 1k and above) and adjust more mechanisms.

I started learning in secondary school (age 11), but sadly had to quit 1 year in because my grades were dropping.. I picked it up again a few months ago (11 years later) and I practice almost everyday, but I don't feel like I'm progressing.. How do I get better/move into more advanced playing when I'm learning at home? Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated

I got a flute off of eBay for $50. I do like it a lot and I’m very happy with it, but there is something I don’t like and it’s making my life harder. The second thumb (key?) if used for b natural of course, but with this new flute, if I have my thumb over the second key, g, g flat, a flat, and d don’t work, at all. I’ve had 2 other flutes before this one ( they both got dented in the places were the prices connect and I don’t have the time or money to get it fixed because I’m in high school) and I didn’t have this problem. I don’t know if this happens with everyone, or if it’s something I can even fix. Sorry for the long comment 😅 I just needed to vent because I’m having a lot of trouble playing Sleigh Ride because if this.

Should I be taking my flute to one of the bigger music store chains in Canada to get my repairs done or should I find a local trusted flute tech within my area who has his certifications. My only issue is the wait periods if they need to send my instrument off to some location to get fixed which could set me back weeks practice wise versus inhouse or by appointment. I don't have a spare flute to practice on and I'd have to get a rental if I needed the flute shipped out for repairs. Rentals come with their own issues too. Not all flutes created equal.
Some stores have great techs. But not all of them. I would check the straubringer list here: www.straubingerflutes.com/pad_technician_intl.html#Canada
Usually these technicians far less time then at a big box which could have a huge waiting list. So I would call and ask what are the wait times in general. Hope this helps.
How would I know if I need my flute repaired? Is there more than just an obvious key that doesn't play right?
Sometimes you'll know and sometimes like every year you should bring it to a music shop for general adjustment.

How much is it to get an overhaul like this on an older student model? How much did this service cost for you? I’m looking around for pricing, but have no idea.
All depends, most shops can give a free estimate. Mine was over $1000 I think. Ill have to check.

I have my flute for 7 years. How often should it be repaired or cleaned or so ? I've never done it.
You should get it done soon. Then after ever 3-4 years if you dont play a lot and take good care of your flute. Ask for either an Overhaul or a Clean, Oil, Adjust (COA) Let me know how that goes! Thanks for watching!

What does it mean when your keys are pretty sticky
It means there is sugary sticky substances clinging to the pads and the tone holes. Be sure not to have had any sugar drinks prior to playing. Try to just drink water instead and make sure you rinse out your mouth a few minutes before playing. It may help prevent this situation from happening.

I gave my flute to my local music store because I thought the keys were sticking and I absolutely could not play an f. That was two weeks ago. I’m getting my flute tomorrow. I’m so excited!

I feel like my flute needs a repair because the flute is not letting me play the right notes, when I tried to play the note f and g it plays the wrong notes.
