    "Use hinges (2:33) with long rods at all four corners to hold the sides together. It's very fast and secure. Picture removing the individual hinge pins on a standard hung door and replacing them with a single long rod and you get the idea." John Resler

    Good Video. You may have fixed this already, but the corner lock (for the side) shown at 2:33 is on backwards. You just have to switch it with the opposite side for it fit correctly. Both brackets turn the corner--not stick out.

    Awesome video! Great trailer!

    Looks like you did a very good job on that. Depends on what you're gonna haul with it but it looks like with that choice of lumber on the bottom and sides you were building it to haul a tank. Security mesh for bottom and sides is a much lighter alternative and handles a pretty heavy load. If you wanna haul dirt or mulch just throw some plywood inside against the sides then remove after the dirt or mulch is dumped. With gas being so pricey building things as light as possible is the key. But you still did a very good job on that. Video is a bit to drawn out but good work. Thanks

    I'm thinking of getting a Harbor Freight Trailer and using it to haul from Missouri to Alaska. People are warning me that the 12" tires and bearings may not be able to handle the 4,000 mile trip. Do you think the trailer can make such a trip?

    • @Vicos
      @Vicos  10 років тому +3

      I only use it for short haul local trips (less than 20 miles round trip). I would not personally feel safe hauling this thing long haul at high speeds. I believe the tires are only rated for 50 MPH top speed. I went cheap because that's all I need. If it comes to safety and long term reliability, spend the money to get the right tool for the job.

      Scott Turkington I would suggest repacking the bearings (youtube has a video for that too). If you have a Tractor Supply near by you can buy new tires for this trailer too. It's a great trailer for the money. I travel long distances all the time hauling my kayaks.

      Scott Turkington Used my trailer with similar modifications (also fabricated and installed a top) to haul to Orlando and back to Milwaukee. I did worry a bit regarding the small tires so upgraded to bigger tires and rims rated for a higher speed and weight. Had to move fenders up to accommodate the taller tires but only a few holes to drill for that. Repacked the bearings using high temp marine grease, seems to have done the job. If you are worried about the bearings you could replace them with a good-quality name-brand that has a higher speed rating.

    Not a bad deal, I suppose. So how much did all that wood add to the curb weight of the trailer?

    Really great for little price recentlly use it ro haul a 10x12 storage with 6 feet walls fully build roof and it hold the load easy but I just dragged for a couple blocks...

    Why didn’t you use clear coat on the oak.?

  • @getenlightened
    @getenlightened 11 років тому

    Understood. However, it looks like, even with your added stakes, that the wood on the inside of the stakes overlap the 4 x 8 bed area, making it so you couldn't fit 4 x 8 material in there with your sides on.
    ?
    I also don't think the built in stake slots are 2 x 4 in size. I've just started building mine and I'm trying to decide how I'm going to build my walls.

    How tall are the walls?

  • @Vicos
    @Vicos  11 років тому

    Not sure, there is no scale around to weigh it. Probably adds 300-400 pounds. A typical load of mulch is about 1,000 pounds, so I still have plenty of capacity for what I need. Of course the sides also come off. Also didn't want plywood on the deck. Won't last long when I'm throwing heavy logs/branches up on there.

    Hey good job on building that nice trailer. I just purchased mines from the same place and I have two things to ask. With the wood u have on the floor of trailer. Could I haul my riding lawn on it if I got the same size wood you have on yours? Next, is it necessary to have the 2x4 on their along with the 2x10 or can I just install the 2x10 on by its self?

  • @getenlightened

    Could you haul drywall with the sides on, or do they make it smaller than 4 x 8?

  • @RobertSmith-us5gx
    @RobertSmith-us5gx 11 років тому

    Someone asked, could you haul drywall with the sides on? I believe YES if you reverse the sides. Have some "L" brackets and some wing nuts handy because there will be some gaps to connect.

  • @AingonAtelia
    @AingonAtelia 11 років тому

    Wow - oak sides. I can't imagine how much that must weigh.
    How much did it cost to get the lumber milled?

    Weld the tongue jack inside the yoke out of the way when pivoted up for moving.

  • @Vicos
    @Vicos  11 років тому

    The outside dimension of the frame is exactly 4' x 8'. So, if you put sides on it using the built-in stake pockets, your bed will be much less than 4x8. That's why I welded my own stake pockets on the outside of the frame.
    Kinda strange they did it this way sine the less expensive foldable trailer has stake pockets on the outside.

  • @Vicos
    @Vicos  11 років тому

    Yes, 4x8 sheets will not fit with the sides on. I remove the sides and use stakes. If the stakes make it a tight fit, just remove the stakes and use straps to secure the load to the deck. I mainly use it to haul mulch. A 5x8 or 5x10 trailer might be better for you. This trailer is not really a bargain. More a case of getting what you pay for.

    oops. I Googled for some pics and I see what you mean. But, in my defense, they do work when installed not per the manufacturer's design :lol: I was thinking outside the box I guess.

    I'm thinking about getting one of these the only thing is can they go on the highway for a couple hours with repacked bearings at no more than 70 miles per hour?

    • @Vicos
      @Vicos  8 років тому

      I only run mine locally. But, my nephew has one of the smaller ones and he used to haul it from Stafford, Va. to central Penna quite a few times; about 4-5 hours each way and Interstate conditions. Personally, I would be nervous; I doubt the frame would fall apart, but the tires concern me. I think they say no more than 50MPH on the sidewalls.

    how high are your side walls?

    • @Vicos
      @Vicos  7 років тому

      Hi Diego, The sidewalls are 24". It works out perfect for hauling loose mulch and loose brush.
      If I was going to do it anew today, and didn't have the existing wood on-hand, I would get 3 sheets of 3/4" pressure treated plywood. Put one full sheet down for your deck. Rip the other 2 in half to use as your side walls. You would end up with a 1/2 sheet of plywood left over.

    A Mennonite kid did 7 trees for $75. I helped him and gave him a $25 tip. Unfortunately, I gave my best #1 oaks away to a guy who shipped them to a mill in Pa. But, it was a fair trade for all the labor he provided cleaning up the disaster.
