FYI, that "complex arrival pattern" on the ferry mission is called a teardrop entry to the downwind, and the FAA have been recently (last couple of years) pushing it as opposed to the mid-field crosswind. You overfly midfield at 1500 AGL, then do a descending 270 degree turn into the downwind. The idea is to make for more separation between downwind and midfield traffic. Opinions vary. Anecdotally, I haven't see a great number of GA adopt the practice. Source: CFI
Oh, no kidding? I was talking to another CFI about that the other day and we both thought it was just something produced by the ForeFlight app and neither of us had recalled seeing that in the AIM before. Interesting, we'll have to go look.
As a flight student with around 12hrs, I have been trained specifically on teardrop entry and have not done a midfield cross wind and was told to avoid them
Bit of a novel ahead... The CFI in me can't stop itself. 1. It is not called a "teardrop entry" and use of the term can and does create confusion of what is being conveyed. For example; when I hear "teardrop", my mind goes to the teardrop entry for a hold/hold-in-lieu of PT. This "teardrop" has no name except being referred to as the preferred entry maneuver by the FAA (herein just "maneuver"). 2. @WrongwayMPT The maneuver is not listed in the AIM. It originated in Advisory Circular 90-66 "Non-Towered Airport Flight Operations"; and is now in PHAK c14 "Airport Operations" and AFM c8 "Airport Traffic Patterns". **NOTE**: the PHAK and AFM graphics and descriptions are outdated. You should use the latest version of AC 90-66 for reference until the handbooks are updated. 3. @WrongwayMPT (again) According to the FSDO fellas at the last Chief meeting I recently went to, some ASIs and FAAST members are trying to get ForeFlight to rename the maneuver in the app. 4. When flown correctly, this maneuver does not resemble a teardrop, more so a large triangle. If you or the reader are interested, refer to Appendix A to AC 90-66C, page A-5. 5. @Nascar_sunscreen The midfield entry, when compared to the formerly mentioned maneuver being flown improperly is far more safe. The only traffic it interferes with is upwind traffic. It has massive safety merits for being more simple and starting with the flow with traffic. If traffic is light and you are familiar with the airport, there is no reason to bias towards the preferred entry. --- # How to Fly the Maneuver ## Considerations Before really getting into it. Let me explain the intent of the maneuver. We are trying to stay clear of ALL traffic that could be in the pattern (light pistons, helicopters, ultra-lights, and turbine-driven airplanes). Different aircraft have different speeds, altitudes, and distances flown in the pattern. ## Execution How to fly the maneuver, with some extra explanation and emphasis. 1. Maneuver to cross perpendicular to the runway and over the midfield. 2. To avoid all aircraft, enter the pattern at greater than 500 feet above your pattern altitude. For me this will typically be ~1,700 AGL. Reason being that it gives room for all aircraft, but does not interfere with a jet that is flying the same maneuver. Personal experience as a jet driver, it is uncommon to use this maneuver to enter the pattern, but we do use it (I did last month). Also, we are more likely to use it when the pattern is very busy, which is also when you would be most likely to use it too. 3. Fly well clear of the pattern (~2 miles) BEFORE beginning a descent to pattern altitude. This will generally put you 3 miles from the airport before you start you descent. 4. Reaching pattern altitude, begin to maneuver onto the standard 45 degree entry to midfield downwind yielding to traffic that is on the downwind. ## Common Errors When conducting stage checks or EoCs, these are the errors that I most commonly see students fall into. 1. Entering at 500 above pattern altitude. This error results in you being at the same altitude as fast moving jets (potentially >200 knots). This creates a mid-air threat with moderate likelihood (if there is a jet in the pattern), but has catastrophic severity for you, the jet, and people on the ground. 2. Making a descending turn to the runway once over the downwind. This error results in you descending in or near the 45 degree entry and entering the downwind with very little time to scan for traffic. This creates a mid-air threat with high likelihood and moderate severity. 3. Making a continuous or steep turn straight to the downwind. This results in a downwind intercept angle of far greater than 45 degrees, sometimes as high as 80 in slow aircraft. This error is not where other pilots expect you to enter at and therefore can create confusion and mid-air threats with low likelihood and moderate severity, but is none the less worth consideration and avoidance.

Hey Jeff, one small thing I noticed, the startup on the C172S, you usually test than arm the stby battery before turning on the master (for ifr you test for 20 sec but vfr you just test then arm). Im a CFI with plenty of experience in the s model, but overalll great video!
I mainly fly (rent) a 2006 C172SP, and although the checklist says 20 sec. Even for vfr, I test for 5 sec. and then arm. Then I wait until the pfd is 100% started and al functions are online, before switching the main battery on. Since this draws current and takes +20 sec. to accomplish, I guess it also shows the battery is ok. There are options for a few things including this under Settings / Assistances / scroll down to Visual Assistance. The sim will overwrite these settings depending on what mission you are doing though, so you need to set a keybind for "Toggle Visual Assistances Display". To do that its Settings / Controls / then type the name into the search bar and set a key for it of your choosing. That way no matter what it tries to show you you can just toggle it all off and on as required.
the holdstill is often at the wrong side of the stop bar, so like right there, you crossed onto the taxiway, as the hold point was on the wrong side of the stop bar separating the turnoff from the taxiway
Issue I’ve been having after I land, says stop and hold at the hold point 99% of the time it’s behind me. Doesn’t give me an option to radio into atc. So when I go to turn around, it gives me an infraction for entering taxi way without radio contact. Is this a bug? Or am I an idiot! Lmao
How did you get freelook to work with your mouse? I've been having trouble assigning it in the controls settings but I suspect that the "Toggle Freelook" isn't what I'm suppose to configure. Any help/guidance would be appreciated.
Hey Jeff, I love the videos, do you have any idea when the 'companies' option in the career mode becomes available? Like when it's unlocked or anything?
Hey Jeff, I noticed that if you try to install scenery or aircraft into the 2024 community folder, it doesn't load. Maybe that might help with loading issues.
Career mode is joke nothing like the real thing. I did PPL some time ago you had to pass a navigation test by navigating with charts wizz wheel computers landed at 3 different airports no GPS VOR NDB . Wonder if you could do that with MSFS how accurate would it be.
LOL last year out of curiosity I did my old stomping grounds Pullman, Washington in MSFS2020 using the Cessna 152 w/VOR only. I flew my 3 solo cross country flights and was blown away by the realism ! Instructor gave me the option to pick my flights...but I had him suggest them. First one was perfect for dead reckoning and a beginner could fly it without VOR - lots of visual cues. Second one was relying on VOR with good dead reckoning visual cues. Last one was absolutely VOR only...no visual reckoning at all for half the 3.5 hour flight !
I was blown away as the dead reckoning objects I used back in 1997 was the same ones I found and used on my MSFS2020 flights - sure brought back memories of the worried I have no idea where I'm at...oh look that must be that on the sectional...relief I'm on course...rinse repeat :>) LOL
The missions are so buggy right now with getting dinged for doing something when you havent even moved. I got a flap overspeed when I cranked the airplane up. I know they will fix these issues but very frustrating.
How are you controlling the rudder on the HOTAS one? I have one and I use the keyboard because that's what it mapped to and it seems like it doesn't do anything. And every time I turn the throttle up or down the plane shoots left or right, so idk if maybe it mapped something wrong. There's no reset to default controller option (which is laughable)
I would actually be interested in learning all the extra steps and verifications you did, its a bummer that they dont evaluate those things in the exams. The certifications dont cover this?
Would love to play this game, but I am one of the unlucky ones who can't get beyond the menus. Career or Free Flight, always freezes loading in to the world.. Also, just noticed you never earned any money from the mission. You started on 500, ended on 500cr. Bug or..?
Hey Jeff, if you ever figure out how to change that circle on the navigation display back to an airplane, please let everyone know. I would definitely love to know. I don’t know why they changed that.
Had to do this 3 times as the first two tries I completed the test but I didn’t get my license…. My 3rd try I passed it and got the license with a 997,000/1,000,000.
I was really looking forward to all the missions as shown in the trailers like SAR. Very disappointed to see that they are locked behind a tedious progression system that forces you to go through activities I'm personally not interested in.
Game is riddled with errors in career mode, advertising initial mission doesn't work at all, engine sounds are missing for loads of planes, aviator penalties spring up before you even move, cant wait for a patch
I am enjoying the career mode, but I find myself flying the A-10 in free mode a lot. I want to fly the A400M but it keeps crashing the game on my Xbox. ❤ the flight sim videos Jeff!
All of Inibuilds planes are broken in my Xbox, they crash the game if I try to spawn in runway or somewhere else and if I spawn in a gate it doesn’t crash but it doesn’t work
the hold short marker was on the wrong side of the hold short line, in the CPL Check Ride, I got hit with that the first time so i tried again, I noticed if I stopped my wheels outside the solid lines, and my nose just BARELY in that marker where it would let me advance I didn't get any deductions
I avoid going to Russia or Belarus as much as I can, but I took one VIP mission to Minsk. Can’t remember which runway was it, but right at short final on runway markers I got a meeting with 9 story building 😅 sadly I don’t know how to do replays (if it is even possible on Xbox)…. And then, hold short right next to warehouse door… I just skipped to parking to get this over with 😅
where do you find that in settings? As a side note when I switched to the MSFS 2020 profile in settings for my keyboard, the escape key doesn't back me out of the menu and into the game like on the 2024 profile and backspace doesn't unbind any key binds anymore in settings. I also don't see an option for anything to bind them to that would make them do these functions
Hi jeff, i'm trying to get my cpl on fs24, but the game is stuck in the loading screen (licence one not the main one). Is there any way to fix? I can do everyother mission, but the cpl doesn'twork
Same here, the box for the hold short is wrong location, it wants you to hold short before the line, I got the same penalty, I put my nose over the line just barely into the box because every other time it wants you to stop before the line. Last time I listen to a big glowing blue box lol
I need some help and you seem like you know what you're doing 😁. How on earth do you lose height on the final approach with out increasing speed? I use the 'square help' thingies. And I get to the final approach with flaps (sometimes full flaps) and have reduced speed to about 70-75 kts. But the moment I go down for the runway, the speed increases to something like 90kts and if I'm lucky I just get a bad landing but often I crash, or on grass run out of runway. So what do i do? I love the game but landing just gets me every time 😮💨
Just pull the power out, remember it’s pitch for airspeed and power for altitude. If you are too high killing the power will descend the airplane. What you are describing is the natural reaction to dive for the runway hence why your airspeed increases. You can put 10 degrees of flaps under 110 knots and then the rest when you are in the white section of the airspeed tape (on the classic gauges this is called the white arc) flaps increase drag and lift allowing you to pitch down without gaining airspeed. The Cessna 172 with a high wing will have a nose down attitude during the landing phase. Once you are over the piano keys at the start of the runway you will pull the power to idle and transition into the round out to flare for touchdown. Let the airplane lose its energy and don’t force the airplane down. happy landings!
@@jfavignano Thanks I appreciate the help, I'll bear that in mid next time. Harder than I thought, must be a nightmare in real life. At least if I crash I just start again, can't do that in RL :)

@@Kevin-x4p4yI wonder if it's still a requirement to use the old basic navigation skills.
Nice flying!
Thanks! 👍
The fuel/payload page is way worse than 2020, I cant even seem to find the MTOW of the aircraft.
Who votes they make Jeff go retake his CPL? I didn't see no Eights on Pylons and a Power Off 180?
Nice to see some videos from the new sim Jeff
Haha only a quick flight needed! 😂
Jeff you do a great job :)
I would actually be interested in learning all the extra steps and verifications you did, its a bummer that they dont evaluate those things in the exams. The certifications dont cover this?
I skipped all the lessons and did the rating, they teach you between those exams
Would love to play this game, but I am one of the unlucky ones who can't get beyond the menus. Career or Free Flight, always freezes loading in to the world..
Also, just noticed you never earned any money from the mission. You started on 500, ended on 500cr. Bug or..?
Yeah it was a bug I ended up having to do it again on my stream
FS2024 is actually fun now that it's working for me....and after I spent 3-4 hours key binding.
What's your PC specs? It looks like there are some lag spikes here and there
Hey Jeff, if you ever figure out how to change that circle on the navigation display back to an airplane, please let everyone know. I would definitely love to know. I don’t know why they changed that.
Jeff, as a man with a giant biker beard, I too and quite miffed that there are no beard options.
I got my PPL today; I'm in love with career mode
Had to do this 3 times as the first two tries I completed the test but I didn’t get my license…. My 3rd try I passed it and got the license with a 997,000/1,000,000.
If only it was this easy in real life 😅
I want to get the game but I have no idea if my pc can handle it I’m too cheap to get a 4090
You would have the potential for some great content if you were current on your PPL. Flight costs are expensive, even moreso as a hobby.
Hey, I work at van nuys! As a line service tech
You are not supposed to use full throttle when pumping fuel
I was really looking forward to all the missions as shown in the trailers like SAR. Very disappointed to see that they are locked behind a tedious progression system that forces you to go through activities I'm personally not interested in.
Hi Jeff
hiiii
Ayyy Van Nuys airport my flight school really good airport
Sadly UK & Western European servers still plagued with same connectivity issues since launch ☹
Damn ☹️
Yeah it turned into a game because some of us aren't pilots and have never been able to enjoy fsx fully because of it
It does both well, free flight it always there for the hardcore simmers
The career mode penalties have been pissing me off. They seem way to sensitive
Every time I try to do the cpl I get a CTD.
More flight sim 24 vids love these and starting on the sim myself with 60 hours on 2020 xbox series x
Does all of career mode involve following blue arrows and/or the flight director? Sure seems like it.
You can turn it off
I avoid going to Russia or Belarus as much as I can, but I took one VIP mission to Minsk. Can’t remember which runway was it, but right at short final on runway markers I got a meeting with 9 story building 😅 sadly I don’t know how to do replays (if it is even possible on Xbox)…. And then, hold short right next to warehouse door… I just skipped to parking to get this over with 😅
How do you remove those blue outlines when interacting with anything in the walkaround and in the cockpit, they drive me nuts
I have legacy mode turned on, I don’t like lock mode either
where do you find that in settings? As a side note when I switched to the MSFS 2020 profile in settings for my keyboard, the escape key doesn't back me out of the menu and into the game like on the 2024 profile and backspace doesn't unbind any key binds anymore in settings. I also don't see an option for anything to bind them to that would make them do these functions
Hi jeff, i'm trying to get my cpl on fs24, but the game is stuck in the loading screen (licence one not the main one). Is there any way to fix? I can do everyother mission, but the cpl doesn'twork
after you land how much are you getting from the flights?
Can MSFS 2024 C172 choose 6 packs instruments ?
4:50 Sooo true 🤣
How do you remove the flight path markers in the air?
I showed how in today’s video! It’s called toggle visual assistance
13:31 it did that with me aswell...must be a bug
Same here, the box for the hold short is wrong location, it wants you to hold short before the line, I got the same penalty, I put my nose over the line just barely into the box because every other time it wants you to stop before the line. Last time I listen to a big glowing blue box lol
How did you set the hotkey to turn on/off the POIs?
Toggle visual assitance
Can this game be played with a controller? I don’t know anything about planes but I really want to try this
yeah you can use a xbox controller
More! ❤
STBY BATT comes on before BAT/ALT master in the G1000.
You can tell I was a 172R pilot lol
@@jfavignano Yeah, didn't mean to sound too critical, it's just that I fly a G1000 nearly every day with Civil Air Patrol. I retired this past year and have not gone out to get a real flying job yet, so I fly about 50 hrs/month trying to get other dudes qualified in CAP aircraft. It's starting to hurt. "More right rudder, you're not a Vy, and stop riding the brakes while taxiing" can be said only so many times before you get burned out.
How did you turn the boxes in the sky off
Search for toggle visual assistance
@jfavignano Thank you very much, sir. The boxes in the sky been driving me nuts lol.
Hi Jeff!
Hi
can add your pc spec ?
How much did you get paid for that mission??
Lost it and then had to redo it on a stream
i failed this mission 5 times alr bc i can’t land or taxi
Practice and you will get plenty of it in the career mode with the 172 haha
So for CPL you only have to do another circuit? Very realistic! 😂😂😂
Man, this career mode is truly for kids.
It wasn’t a circuit it was a point a to b
The mission sensing definitely needs trimming
Hi Jeff I am also based out of STL at 1h0
Be nice if the game would let me fly something bigger than a Cessna lol
Get those ratings!
Been here since 2015
Big mistake from Microsoft. A CPL checkride is done in a complex aircraft. A Cessna 172 is not a complex aircraft.
❤️💪🙏
I know this game is best played with a HOTAS, but dear Jesus, this game is impossible to fly on controller. 2020 was way better in that respect tbh.
Are you on PC or console? I play on controller and have no problems with it. I’ve progressed pretty far through the career mode as well.
You would think that they would use proper ATC for the communications. Tree - tree ? Really?
It’s phonetic and correct but no one really uses it in the real world
@@jfavignano It makes them sound Irish. Shannon Center, this is Delta 229 checking in at Flight Level 310...
Looking forward to trying this career mode out, but good lord some of those AI voices they use for characters are pure cringe. If it's one thing I detest passionately, it's AI voices.
yeah it's AI but with so many missions voice acting was out of the question. There are like 3 million missions in the game currently.
@@jfavignano Yeah that's kinda understandable, and also saves a shitload of time and money but it still makes me die a little inside every time I hear an AI voice
They are not licenses they are certificates. No such thing as a pilot license.
sure
CPL rating ? What a joke!!!!
