These kids are great, but I just wish there were a promising American junior out there whose style I could look at and say "damn, that's a beautiful form!"
Most of these juniors have a tendency to muscle the ball instead of using fluid momentum and good kinetic chain to generate power. Also, their dynamic balance needs some work in order for their movement to look more Federesc. I think tennis coaches should encourage kids to sign up for dancing classes. That's one of the best ways to master dynamic balance.
im always amazed how many people right off players who have not cracked the top 100 by a certain age.pablo cuevas lost to ryan harrison when harrison was 15 years old and look at where they are now.
jigsterify I absolutely hate the way he plays (and the way he acts sometimes...hence the bitchy racket throw at the end). His forehand is so awkward and his footwork is so lethargic imo, but nevertheless, he somehow gets the job done lol and it suits him i guess.
solipsisticbliss. i totally agree with you, his serve has a fat hitch in it to and his forehand looks so forced its sad, straight sailing on more than 50% of the rallies
***** i wanna say that its gonna work but hes not gonna get past maybe the top 200 or bottomg 100 with that technique.... players with proper technique would destroy him based on the fact that with his horrible contorted strokes he can't get full extension on his strokes meaning he can't generate the same amount of power and consistency As for his serve.... its not stiff dude theres a fat hitch haha its pretty obvious to see and thats not gonna get you anything but unforced errors in the professional league. Not saying he won't be a good player but he lacks what it takes to make it past being good bottom 100-200 player. To be great he must work on proper technique or at the very least making his contorted style more consistent. He should have played longer as a junior imo waiting to go pro, it would have helped him develop a heck of a lot more.
jigsterify Yeah but i did training where he usually plays and you should see him practice his forehand i mean I've never seen anyone hit as hard and keep his consistency like Francis does
jerrybronham Novikov is not chunky at all. Bulky or jacked would be better because he's just muscular. No 'chunky' guy is a top professional tennis player.
That whole breaking the racquet routine at the end by Tiafoe was horrible. I know he is young but so were Sampras and Chang when they were thrust onto the big stage. They never acted like that.
I'm not impressed, 18 year old nadal would completely destroy both of theses guys. If this is what we have to look "forward to" for tennis then our sport is going waaaaay down.
+Adam Drake To be fair, we should give the youngest generation some time to mature before judging. The game is constantly changing, and we don't know what the next best player's strengths are going to be. Serve and volley was still very strong only 20 years ago. Also 20 years ago, the top players were all in their early to mid 20s. Now we have aggressive baseliners all over the entire tour with veterans in their late 20s and early 30s at the top of the game. To comment on Nadal - as a teen, Nadal had a great baseline game. At 18, he immediately started to dominate the tour on clay, which is just plain amazing. He began winning french opens from day 1. However, his game on other surfaces lacked from typical clay-court player deficiencies, including a very pitiful serve. Obviously, that has changed now. For a time, Nadal was even one of the best hard court players (or so commentators claimed).
Where have you been? "Our sport" has been down for a long time in the Mens division. And yes neither of these guys are going to win every Grand Slam and a Gold Medal there is only one Rafa. The best either of these 2 can hope for is a lifetime of playing a game they love and getting paid to do it. Both likely will play all the slams and earn around 5 million in their pro career and then retire to getting $200.00 an hour at some cushy resort. I would trade places with either of them.
+JEFFREY LI You won't believe how much I know about Tiafoe. He trained at college park with Misa. Yes, he will be a pro, that's not hard, but he will have hard time to get in top 20, or even top 50. Do not tell me anyone who play future tournament is a pro. by my definition , pro mean on can make a comfortable living. ATP top 20 is the line.
Do you think when you're over 25 years old, and are the number 219 seed in the world, you're basically just out there to have fun - or are you actually taking it seriously? Reality is, if you were going to break top 100, you would have done it by then. So I like the fact that they just seem to be enjoying themselves. There's not much at stake here, after all.
freelancerAM Why in the world are you making your comment on this video when neither one of these players is over 25 years old? Novikov is 21 and Tiafoe is 17.
Francis Tiafoe's forehand is so ugly. You can just see how inconsistent it will be at the higher levels of tennis. There is just too much movement on his wrist and shoulder in the motion. Yuck.
+Mabeh Al-Zuq Yadeek It doesn't matter how bad his forehand looks it's still affective thats why he's one of the best junior players and is climbing the ATP ranking really fast too.
+1tennisx No, it really does matter. That much wrist movement is going to cause some serious orthopedic dis functionality. He's going to injure his wrist with that kind of forehand.
17-year-old Frances Tiafoe ... what an incredibly bright future ahead of him in this game. Thanks for posting this, Matt.
just check atp website Novikov ranked 771 and Tiafoe ranked 58. You were right about Tiafoe's future!!!
@@jeffhermida4788 Roger even said as much a couple of years ago!
great call sir.
This aged v well
I was looking for this match, thanks for posting this!
THanks for upload this, great work! i´ve watched it all, nice match.

Or they could do martial arts.
There are some absolute gems of stupidity of the highest order in this comments section... Love it!
Excellent work. Thanks. Did Novikov graduate from UCLA or left early?
didanhtennis didnt he leave after second year?
Ron Morgan Yeah thats right
I hope atp use this camera angle too
There weren't too many long rallies. I was falling asleep watching these people play.

Is it just me or does Tiafoe look rather stiff in his play, his back seems very straight and rigid

wonder what novikov's fitness regime is like...
Alex Noyes LOL i wonder that too! Weird seeing a dude that chunky move as well as he does though.
jerrybronham Novikov is not chunky at all. Bulky or jacked would be better because he's just muscular. No 'chunky' guy is a top professional tennis player.
tiafoe seems to smash his racket every time he loses
Tiafoe looks tired, and he actually went on to win his professional first title? They're both not trying hard here.
That whole breaking the racquet routine at the end by Tiafoe was horrible. I know he is young but so were Sampras and Chang when they were thrust onto the big stage. They never acted like that.
+springfield03sniper If losing doesn't eat at you like acid, you'll never be a top player.

tiafoe has the strangest forehand ever

nadal was a freak of nature though. he was already pretty buff at that age.
Novikov looks like he moves really slow.
UA-cam tennis match commentators are the absolute worst, why do I take the time to read them?
Not impressed by either of these two. They may be good at college level, but they can not make it in pro world if they play lithe this.
+Keith Lee hahah good to know keith
+Keith Lee Are you stupid? Tiafoe is a high schooler. He's 17. Novikov won't make it. Tiafoe will. You don't know what you're talking about pls
