Thank you for this. My playing is much different than the other organist at our church, and I’ve wondered if I’m making an error. This explains articulation well, and I now understand better.

Thank you! In general for early music, just play a passage with one finger only as legato as possible. Then imitate the same touch playing with all the fingers.

Am i allowed to for example jump with my thumb from one note to the next in articulate legato? In pure legato this isn't allowed right?

Good question. Yes, I’m early music thumb to thumb progressions or same finger progressions are quite common especially when playing the same intervals.

Very interesting indeed. It makes great difference between legato and "articulate legato" for early organ music. I modified my playing at once ....
I can't find any organ score of the hymn you are using for demonstration, Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (only chorals like BWV739). Is the harmonisation yours? Can we have the score?

How would "articulate legato" be notated in a score vs. normal legato? Thanks.

Articulate legato wasn't notated in the score. It was called Ordinary Touch back in the day performers knew was it was. Other articulation marks, such as legato or staccato might have appeared from time to time.

Baroque music = always non legato .............

Not always, but most of the time. In chromatic music, like Italian Elevation toccata with durrezze e ligature style it' played more or less legato.

@@musicisitallIn my country, the Netherlands, most professional musicians have the courage to give comments in a transparent way without disguising behind an anonymous UA-cam account. In my country we don’t take musical professionals serious who are being anonymous unfundamented critical towards other organists. We call that non-ethical behaviour.
