This song hurts to the bone but in a good way.I listened to this alot when a guy didn't work out romantically and then when mom got cancer it hit harder and harder. I'd love to hear this or Flag live at his show this Friday
I saw him alive in Alicante(Spain) and i can only say one thing this song alive is just glory, something magical, so dificult to explain with words, thx for the video and for the lyric.
This dude is awesome. I've only head "Civilians" but there are some fantastic songs on there. I'm definately gonna have to look at his older catalogue. I wish I could get a good video of "Our Song."
Isn't it amazing how such awesome talent is ignored by the polluted music mainstream. Alas I digress, you can't force feed music of this quality to a musically handicapped public...they prefer to eat the musical equivlent of unhealthy fast food!!!
the word that keeps coming to mind is great. but great like the old way meaning large or broad..like "he sailed across a great sea". bless your heart joe. i love you brother+
i lov this one also--it has taken up residence in my head- the lyrics encourage deep consideration-meditation- very intimate- the 3 of you have such an amazing sound- again, thank u for sharing part of u- this music reached my bones- thank you again-
You're welcome, gloriasant. I don't know why, but sometimes this song reminds me of another beautiful song: "Sunny sailor boy", by irish singer Luka Bloom (there's a nice video of this song, taken from a DVD called "The Man is Alive").
Darkness settles on the ground Leaves the day stumbling blind Coming to a quiet close And maybe just in time We almost lost the heart to know How to keep our best in mind We almost lost the heart to know How to keep our best in mind Time has turned an angry face Throws a dark eye back to sea What will pass for mercy now We practice unforgivingly As if might and will make right Or either one could make us free As if might and will make right Or either one could make us free Lovers laugh and cross this way Weaving out and into the street It seems we never were so young Or it was never quite so sweet But the world is always beautiful When it’s seen in full retreat The worst of life is beautiful As it slips away in full retreat God only knows that we can we do No more or less than he’ll allow God only knows that we mean well God knows that we just don’t know how But I’ll try to be your light in love And pray that is enough for now I’ll try to be your light in love And pray that is enough for now I’ll pray that is enough for now I’ll pray that is enough for now I’ll pray that is enough for now I’ll pray that is enough for now Should it be of any use ;-)
Love this song, first saw it on TCM. I had to find it. It was my introduction to Joe Henry. Wonderful bass work here too. Plays it like its a Stratocaster.Anyone know the bassist's name?
@GoofyBCN Please forgive my son, as the name Marvin is an inside joke.My son, gbfootball04 has grown up since his comment here, and may one day claim his family heritage of performing music, and not spoofing it. But I doubt it. Again appologies for an inside joke that was posted.

This could be one of the most touching songs ever written.
I know Joe Henry for more than 30 Years now. He is the most gifted songwriter for me, the one i would take records with to a lonesome islands
TCM used this song on their 2008 remembrance of film industry people who died. Very moving and the best of the last several years.
THIS IS A MASTERPIECE!!!

Joe Henry was born to do this...Amazing song writer.
Guy Billion so so true
The naked heart of our mortal souls exposed through the hand of artistry, we wander into this enchanted, poignant place, in quiet wonder...
Don Wanderer that sounds like Shakespeare...who wrote that?
Don Wanderer or you? lol
Civilians is the best album I've heard for a few years--feels like Astral Weeks, interlocked, meditative, pulled out of a deep, spiritual place....
Simply GREAT. He's one of my favourite artists with T.Waits and Vinicio Capossela.
Ferdinando Boldi Have to check out the latter
One of my all time favorite songs, by Joe or any other artist. And Man, what tasteful drumming!
Jay Bellerose on drums, one of the best.
Until TCM used this, I had never heard of Joe Henry. One of the most haunting music pieces I’ve ever heard.
So quietly Joe Henry has achieved high acclaim

I wish the lyrics were posted. I looked for them but no luck.
Darkness settles on the ground
Leaves the day stumbling blind
Coming to a quiet close
And maybe just in time
We almost lost the heart to know
How to keep our best in mind
We almost lost the heart to know
How to keep our best in mind
Time has turned an angry face
Throws a dark eye back to sea
What will pass for mercy now
We practice unforgivingly
As if might and will make right
Or either one could make us free
As if might and will make right
Or either one could make us free
Lovers laugh and cross this way
Weaving out and into the street
It seems we never were so young
Or it was never quite so sweet
But the world is always beautiful
When it’s seen in full retreat
The worst of life is beautiful
As it slips away in full retreat
God only knows that we can we do
No more or less than he’ll allow
God only knows that we mean well
God knows that we just don’t know how
But I’ll try to be your light in love
And pray that is enough for now
I’ll try to be your light in love
And pray that is enough for now
I’ll pray that is enough for now
I’ll pray that is enough for now
I’ll pray that is enough for now
I’ll pray that is enough for now
Should it be of any use ;-)
and also for Mark
The song played at my funeral.
