I was 18 years old in the back of a car on that bridge on the way to dinner with my Mother & Aunt when that plane crashed just ahead of us on the opposite side of the bridge. We heard a loud sound but the conditions were heavy snow and you could hardly see anything. Most people had no idea what just happened and kept driving as our lane of traffic was not effected. It actually hit on the opposite side of the bridge in the lanes heading back out of the city. I remember seeing what appeared to be a giant wheel and tire on the other side of the bridge as we drove by, but at that time, It never registered that it was an aircraft part. We made it off the bridge and found out later that evening what had actually happened. Haunting to say the least.
They did not use all thrust in engines. Yes they were stalling but they said in the show there were sensors on the engines that tell the crew speed. Plus they did not turn on anti-ice which gets snow off the plane.
They did not turn on the anti ice which prevents freezing internally. Because of this, some of the instruments showed that they had more power than they actually did taking off. Externally, the deicer that the maintenance people used on the plane did not have enough of the chemical, but it did not cause problems other planes. The pilots were negligent in not returning for more de icer as they sat on the runway in a delay. The pilot stupidly tried to get behind another plane to melt the ice accumulating on the wings, but the melted ice just shifted elsewhere and created more problems. The plane couldn’t get enough power and went way farther down the runway than it should have. In all these things the copilot voiced concerns maybe six times and the pilot shrugged it off, never aborting the takeoff when he should have seen that there was a serious problem lifting off in a snowstorm.
The investigation proved that the instruments failed precisely because the pilots did NOT turn on the internal anti ice system that connected sensors in the engines to the cockpit instruments that subsequently gave the wrong readings. The pilots were from Florida and had little experience with ice. A huge factor in the crash was that they did NOT know the conditions and were absolutely clueless about ice on a plane or frozen sensors.
Feel terrible for all those who died, except maybe the captain. He was the cause of this. The FO even voiced his concerns before takeoff and the captain dismissed him.
@@GhilliedGuerily The captain was responsible for this. Not only was it his duty to ensure passenger safety, which he failed, he ignored the VALID concerns of the FO, and as a result, all those people lost their lives. He is also not the only captain to doom a plane through their arrogance either. He went over regulations and used unauthorized procedures, which led to the ice buildup downing him. And the FO told him something was amiss, but didn't heed him

Air Florida Flight 90 was a Boeing 737-200 aircraft that crashed into the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., on January 13, 1982. The crash killed 78 people, including four passengers who were rescued from the icy water. The aircraft was taking off from National Airport when it struck a bridge and plunged into the Potomac River. The crash was captured on video by a news crew, which helped investigators understand the sequence of events. The investigation into the crash revealed that the pilots had failed to de-ice the aircraft properly before takeoff. The ice buildup on the wings contributed to the loss of lift and the subsequent crash. The accident led to significant changes in aviation safety regulations regarding de-icing procedures.
The ice on the wings had nothing to do with the crash. The ice on the P2T2 Probe had everything to do with the crash. The plane successfully flew from DCA to the bridge.
There were 6 people who made it to the surface, 5 survived, and 2 of the five survivors died of natural causes within 2 weeks of each other, 20 years later. There are 3 left.
