Just a voice singing directly into a microphone and directly recorded onto tape. No mixing, no tracking, no fuss, no muss. Just pure vocal talent in its most natural form. Etta James is just undeniable ✌️
I love Etta James. Especially her song "At Last". I know she said in the interview when President Obama became president. She felt a little snubbed and hurt because they asked Beyonce to sing her song "At Last" instead of having her do it since she was still alive at that time. But you will like that song and others that she did.
Etta was a very talented singer who I feel didn’t get her flowers. One of my favorites by her is Roll With Me Henry. My mom wouldn’t let me sing that song because she and other thought it was too risqué.
Etta James is a great vocalist but you should look at some of her contemporaries that you haven't gotten to yet. Such as Dinah Washington (an amazingly versatile talent), Carmen MacRae, Sarah Vaughn, Ruth Brown, June Christy, Nancy Wilson, Dakota Staton and many others.
Ahh, Dinah Washington, I just love her. I watch the vid of "Dinah Washington - I Don't Hurt Anymore (1956)" on YT regularly, it just makes me feel happy. Add Anita O'Day to that list, but I think Ella and The Divine One (Vaughn) are probably the best true jazz standard singers to start that journey. EDIT: I just looked, they've done a couple Ella songs so the journey's begun! 😉
Also, the lesser known Barbara Lynn. On her bluesy hit, "You'll Lose a Good Thing, " she sings lead and plays electric guitar. Very rare, for a woman; particularly in 1962. Love her and the song.
I can just sit and listen to Etta and feel like I'm sitting in a basement. Underground gas and soul joint lots of smoke wafting in the air sitting on a table having a drink three, maybe 4 AM in the morning, what a mood, it just conjures up all sorts of memories for me.
I saw Etta James live at the 25th Anniversary of The Dukes lowrider club, It was at Stevens Steak house in L.A. Got to meet her, super wonderfull lady, l believe Brenton Wood was there, along with Richard Berry, who wrote Louie Louie. He sang Theres A Riot Going On, Cell Block # 9.
Etta James had that indefinable quality that turned a musician into a spine-tingling enigma. You can't really explain it, or pinpoint it, but it's there, your soul and your body _KNOWS._
Ah yes......Etta James. The Grand Dame of rock and roll. She walked that rock and roll walk and we're so lucky she did. She's my very favorite female artist of all time. I love this woman. My personal favorite is "Don't Cry Baby." You can't go wrong with any of her music. What a perfect way to start the weekend. Excellent choice!
Oh Etta, you don't even need the music behind you, your voice is the only instrument you need. There is a moment near the end of the song and it is just her voice and man it gives me chills. More Etta please. Suggestions for you "At Last", "I'd Rather Go Blind", and "All I Could Do Was Cry."
1960 Etta James did a Willie Dixon cover of "I just want to make love to you", same Album. And it's sultry and amazing. 4 years later The Rolling Stones did a cover as well.
The incomparable Miss Etta James! YESSIR!. This lady has a resonance to her voice that is unmatched in popular music imo. Her signature song is "At Last" (the title cut from the album shown with this song) and it is a classic for sure. Have loved her music since the 60's. You can't go wrong with Miss Etta. Great reaction again. Keep up the great work.
"I want a love that is only square" 🥰 my all time fave Etta James song My girls use to ask me what this song meant and I would tell them that she is saying she wants the real thing. They didn't get lol. Beautiful song, great reaction!
A blues classic from 1946. James released her version on her 1960 debut album At Last! Based on tech at the time, this is recording at its simplest and musicianship at its finest. No edits, no post-production, no overdubs... just very talented musicians and singer performing the song live (one take) and captured by multiple microphones. A bit of EQ and compression on the mics (on the way to tape) and then practical reverb (mic in a live room recording a speaker playing the sub-mix) blended into the sub-mix to create the final mix. All in real-time. No tricks, no auto-tune, no digital manipulation... just talent. Love it. Great choice, Amber.
Oh my, Miss Etta James is in a class all of her own At Last was my wedding song 23 years later it's still played often at our home and always danced to. ♥️
@@kellifranklin4432 LOL. At this point, I'm expecting an announcement from Jay and Amber that all Toni Braxton and Mariah Carey videos are blocked. That is the only acceptable answer to why, in two years, they have NEVER reacted to either of those artists, and yet we get hot mess Minogue.
Etta INVENTED a style of her own and so many others have worked to honor her talent and style. Her name should be mentioned among all of the very greatest, most influential, American vocalists.
Please react to Etta's "I'd Rather Go Blind"! You two are too young to remember, but EVERYTHING used to shut down on Sundays and all stores were closed and hardly anyone traveled anywhere. Sunday had a different kind of feeling.
Come on Amber and give these awesome singers some love at least once.... Check out Stephanie Mills hits "I Feel Good All Over" " Comfort Of A Man" and the duet with Teddy Pendergrass "Feel the Fire" Still waiting on you to do other awesome soul singers like Phyllis Hyman(Living All Alone) and the most powerful singer Jennifer Holliday(And I'm Telling You) Betty Wright "No Pain No Gain" Lisa Fisher "How Do I Ease the Pain" Sylvia "Pillow Talk" Angela Winbush "Angel" Evelyn Champaign King "Shame"
This is why jazz is my favorite genre-it’s just so cozy and pleasing. Even the more upbeat and avant grade stuff just makes me feel like I’m sitting in a cozy cafe with a book and a delicious coffee. Or on the best, most romantic date of my life. I really enjoy Sarah Vaughan and Nina Simone as well and I can’t remember if you’ve listened to them. Sarah Vaughan’s “You Go To My Head” is just so good.
You guys would love Etta's I'd Rather Go Blind, also covered by Chicken Shack/Christine McVie before she was in Fleetwood Mac. Also check out the more upbeat Something's Gotta Hold on Me. Christina Aguilera performed her version in the movie Burlesque (see the movie while your at it- starring Christina and Cher!). Nothing like hearing Etta's voice though - Fantastic!
Knowing how much you love the “crooners” I think you would love their female, contemporaries the ‘Jazz Divas” just as much if not more - Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Abbey Lincoln, Nancy Wilson, the list goes on, and on - a whole new golden world of music! ❤
In my Holy Trinity of top 3 female voices for me along with the G.O.A.T. Ella Fitzgerald and Amy Lee. Honorable mention to Roberta Flack, Oleta Adams and Sade
I noticed when I was looking at the blues charts to see how this new artist 14 yr old Taj Farrant was doing on the iTune blues charts that Etta James is always in the top ten still. ❤
This woman could use her voice to casually dance between all out Blues through to a slow, stylish jazz feel. At Last was the song my wife and I used as our First Dance. A wonderful woman with an incredible voice.
Yes!!! I've been waiting for this reaction!!! Etta James is a QUEEN 👑. Knew you guys would love her too. This song is one of my favorites by her. Check out Trust in Me or Tell Mama next
Just a voice singing directly into a microphone and directly recorded onto tape. No mixing, no tracking, no fuss, no muss. Just pure vocal talent in its most natural form. Etta James is just undeniable ✌️
The song "at last" is a full showcase of her incredible voice. Definitely worth a listen
Definitely Agree! I'd say that's her 'signature' song. Surprised J&Amber haven't done this one yet!
@@rwschummshe and aretha franklin have the greatest female voices of all time, in my opinion.
Wonderful song, her best.
I’m pretty sure they reacted to that song already.
"At Last" is a favorite at weddings.
Jay & Amber, you'll love her "At Last", "All I Could Do Was Cry" and "Trust in Me"!!!
Y’all been sleeping on Ms. Etta. You need to do “I’d Rather Go Blind” next ❤
That song is so amazing. 😍
Fo sho. Lol!!!

Wow, Etta James, one of the greatest ever, snubbed for an adequate but nothing special 'celebrity' pop singer like Beyoncé, shame on them.
@@sg-yq8pm I agree. That was a big slap in the face.
Beyonce is a career minor leaguer in comparison to Etta James vocal talents.
Etta was a very talented singer who I feel didn’t get her flowers. One of my favorites by her is Roll With Me Henry. My mom wouldn’t let me sing that song because she and other thought it was too risqué.
Obamas love being seen with celebrities. They should be ashamed of themselves for not asking Etta.
This is why she is a legend and this song is a classic.
Can't wait for your reaction! Etta is one-of-a-kind! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
One of the most spectcular voices ever ❤
Love Etta, Nina Simeon, Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday. Great Sunday music.
Agreed, but I'd add Della Reese.
Sarah Vaughn for sure
I have recommended both Sarah Vaughn and Nancy Wilson several times before.
I prefer the Phoebe Snow cover of At Least
Also, the lesser known Barbara Lynn. On her bluesy hit, "You'll Lose a Good Thing, " she sings lead and plays electric guitar. Very rare, for a woman; particularly in 1962. Love her and the song.
Because y'all love Etta James and Amy Winehouse, you must add Dinah Washington.
Gotta listen to her song
AT LAST
Beautiful!!!
Making the Etta James - Amy Winehouse connection proves how much growth these two have made! Love it!
You don’t listen to this song, you get cradled by it
Beautiful! You've got to hear her sing At Last.
Etta was a Queen.
I love Etta James on any day, and especially on Sundays!
Love this one, and "At Last" is legendary.
I can just sit and listen to Etta and feel like I'm sitting in a basement. Underground gas and soul joint lots of smoke wafting in the air sitting on a table having a drink three, maybe 4 AM in the morning, what a mood, it just conjures up all sorts of memories for me.
The great Etta James. This is beautifull, but guys, you must react to her "At Last". Youd both love it, i know. ❤🎼🎙
Oh my gosh is right, Etta is incredible
Etta always makes me want to sit back and reminisce. LoL she makes me want to say "I need a drink 🍻" .
OMG!!! Y’all have to check her out - I’d Rather Go Blind Live At Montreux (1975). It’s amazing indeed.
A great legend with awesome talent....Rest in peace Etta.

Legendary voice
At Last, a song you won't soon forget. Thanks for this gem.
“I’d Rather Go Blind” is my favorite! Y’all will love it.
Whoever her arranger was needs a Grammy along with the late great Etta James
Etta James song "Somethings Got Ahold Of Me" will make you fall off your chairs. SOOOOO GOOD.
Etta James had that indefinable quality that turned a musician into a spine-tingling enigma. You can't really explain it, or pinpoint it, but it's there, your soul and your body _KNOWS._
Etta James was a Queen of the Blues & a voice like hers comes along once in a century.
One of my favorite Etta songs. It really showcases her voice & range

Jazz or R&B...more than R&R
Seeing your faces react to this Etta James song is all I need right now. She has an undeniable talent for evoking emotions.

So glad Amber that you focused on Etta. What a pure voice.

Love love Etta James!! Amber you are right she sings from her soul‼️My daughter used one of her songs “At Last “at her wedding💗
Beautiful, makes me want to dance like dancing with the stars!
1960 Etta James did a Willie Dixon cover of "I just want to make love to you", same Album. And it's sultry and amazing. 4 years later The Rolling Stones did a cover as well.
Dinah Washington's version is fantastic as well. Dinah also influenced Amy Winehouse, she admitted.
