thanks for showing the carb. and the restricted boot. no one has mentioned that boot to me and all the videos on the xr650r, i have not seen that. i have an '02 that i had the carb. as it was 20 minutes kicking before it would start. now, it is much easier to start. will order the boot even though i don't know if it has a restricted boot or not.
Good to see another bike on the road again. It is a survivor. I actually didn't know that Honda made a water cooled XR. I need to learn more about it. Thanks for sharing!
Mine was leaking gas too. I just removed that metal clip that's attached to the float needle. Apparently it's not necessary for the functioning of the float, it's just to help installation of the float needle with the floats. I think it was bent causing the float to stay open regardless what the float level was. Went right away once I removed it.
kick it through 5-10 times while holding the decomp before you start it. It wets the cylinder a little bit, mine would always start 1st kick if I primed it. also if you drop it, kick it through with the decomp about 10 times while holding the throttle wide open, then go to tdc, decomp, about an inch over and kick through.
I do the same with mine. If it's warm outside mine will start with 2-3 priming kicks. And make sure you have the "fire suppressing screen" in the airbox when kicking over WOT. I've had to remove the side cover in panic once ;)
G'day bro nice XR. I'm from Australia and bought my XR650R new back in 2000. Hey looking at that air restriction opening between the carby and the motor could be about 1 inch, mine was about 8mm of gap for air to through
Just took my 02 650R out for a good spin yesterday and overall running decent but my idle is kinda hit or miss. I can start it in 1-3 kicks consistently kinda stumped on the fine tuning. Hope to see or hear how yours got dialed in! Thanks
Thanks! I got. 68 pilot at the moment and I pretty much adjusted the fuel mixture screw almost from 1 to 5 turns out and still had the same behavior from idle. Thanks for the reply by the way!!
It will start one kick if you cycle it with decomp lever a few revolutions And draw fuel through the carb into the chamber, then get to tdc and one kick, you’re thumping
I lost my phone in a water park incident! You should reach out, I'd love to show you a update on the DRZ and hear if y'all ever made anything of that FZR : ) See ya buddy!
My xr650r was leaking fuel the same way. I found that the material inside the original petcock deteriorated and was blocking the float needle from closing all the way. I installed a new petcock, cleaned the carb and it never leaked again.
I finally had to change the needle again bud, for some reason, the new needle we put in kept leaking, even after adjusting the float, but its stopped now finally!
If you swap the original carby with a 38 or 42mm flat slide it makes the throttle response way more snappy, instant power when you roll on the throttle. Also when you back off the throttle it is alot smoother it doe s not try to throw you over the handle bars
My xrr was pissing out the carb when I bought it the guy couldn't get it to stop I took the bowl off en sanded all those rough edges off the floats now here we are seven years later en she hasn't peed sense
Howdy Mike! The only way to truly know how much porting, where you port, etc you need to do is with a flow bench. It always surprises me how the wrong porting can lose port velocity and flow. I dont have a flow bench, so I have Lindsay Machine Racing in Sandy Utah do my heads. You can increase flow by upsizing valve sizes by 1mm (Ferrea valves only), going with a bigger cam, and flow bench measured porting. Keep in mind that bigger ports, or air movement doesnt mean more power necessarily...... If you maximize port flow with all that head work, you'll want a big bore kit, a stroker crank kit, good flowing exhaust, and at least a 39mm FCR or similar carb.
i recently got a 2002 xr650r and it only seems to run somewhat decent when the choke is all the way on, even then at higher rpm it kind of sputters. but if i take the choke off, it will still idle but when i twist the throttle it instantly bogs down. i already put a carb rebuild kit and cleaned the carb, made sure there wasnt any cracks or rips in the intake boots. any suggestions?
sounds like carb related issue but could also be spark related, blown head gasket, check for good grounds especially at the coil, also could be stator on its way out.
Love it! Even though you richened up the jetting, does removing the choke flap and replacing the intake boot supposed to eliminate the need to open up the airbox? Please keep us posted on this minty red pig. 👨👩👧 ❤
Howdy folks! I understand that these bikes are jetted pretty lean from the factory, so most people richen the pilot circuit to compensate for that, and, the fellow that owned it before me opened up the exhaust, which makes it run a bit more lean too. The intake boot doesnt seem to affect the jetting, at least on the low end, but its hard to know for sure because I havent had it on the sniffer to be 100% sure. It is running excellent now though, so I think Ill just leave it unless I open up the airbox, which yes, may make it even more lean....... ;)
Congrats on acquiring a legend! I think you'll enjoy this interview with Bob Bell and his opinions on the XR650R he honed the suspension for team Honda m.ua-cam.com/video/-rl9Q9ORCEs/v-deo.html
Hello mrduhfactor! I really like what you did with your KLR build you did for Tyler 5y ago. I was wondering if you where in contact with tyler. Not trying to get sympathy points but my mom just passed 2 days before christmas at 51yo. I would like to just meet the guy. He is the one that brought me to your channel. Ive been following him since april 2011 and he was a big insperation to purchase a klr 10 years ago. since then i ran my first klr into the ground with 220k+ miles on all types of terrain. Not even trying to brag Im just giving a testimonial to the klrs durability with the work of someone who has never worked on a bike before. id like to shake the hand of the few people that inspired me(if not yours for your work as well!) my email is andyssowell(AT)gmail.com again i love your work man! keep up the good stuff! You and ty have been a big inspiration to get out and ride!
One of the best bikes ever made. I wish Honda would have kept that bike around just with some modern updates. May the XR's live forever
modern front fender and modern headlight - cleans up that old school look

i ride an xr 400r and love the torque to power...they are fun
I had an XR350 back in the day, exellent bike that 400!!
Amazing find. There aren’t too man out there that haven’t been beat to hell or modified.

I cant remember now, but after cleaning the carb, and adjusting the low speed mixture screw, it ran like a scalded dog......
Thanks! I got. 68 pilot at the moment and I pretty much adjusted the fuel mixture screw almost from 1 to 5 turns out and still had the same behavior from idle. Thanks for the reply by the way!!

Could we get an update on the XR650R?
You have got to plate it, if possible. I miss my BRP xr650l
Bro im missing your videoes!

Love that 650!
They're tough Ol' bikes, arent they!
Bro pump the throttle 4 times closed to wide open before you kick it. That's the way I was taught and it works great
Yeah definitely adjust float and it should run fine
I finally had to change the needle again bud, for some reason, the new needle we put in kept leaking, even after adjusting the float, but its stopped now finally!
Did you get it running right ? What did you change
Run good gas, it’s worth the piece of mind and they run way cooler.

Does anyone know what bike the 16211-mbn-640 part number come from?
Rad!
She's a big girl, but sturdy!
Can you do a video on the carb removal?
I would love to, but the bike is sold ......
wow great find . Im jealous .... I want want so bad
what kind of exhaust are you running?
This one had the stock exhaust.....
mrduhfactor I have a drz400 and did the BBK and a little bit of head porting . I'm wondering about other head work i can do for more flow .
