A fitting tribute to President Reagan. I am old enough to remember air raid sirens prompting us to get under our desks in school. Tearing down the Berlin Wall was a BIG deal, it marked the end of the cold war. Many don't know Reagan's policies were directly responsible for the Soviet Union's disbanding.
I remember watching news back in '89 when the Wall was falling down. The next couple of years felt surreal. It seemed like the whole world would finally be uniting.
FYI, there is also a piece of the Berlin Wall at The Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. There's also a considerably larger stretch (10 segments) at 5900 Wilshire Blvd, across the street from the LA County Museum of Art. I had no idea about this one in San Bernardino. Great find!
There’s also a piece inside the men’s restrooms in front of the urinals right off the casino floor at the Main Street Station Casino in Las Vegas. Women can view the wall by asking for a security escort and they ask the men to put their horses back in their stalls while the ladies view the wall behind the urinals.
Thanks for visiting my City. San Bernardino has had a rough time since the bankruptcy.... homelessness and blight haven't helped. There's good and bad areas in most cities. I'm still hopeful for my San Bernardino 😊
Cool. I have a lot of pictures of the graffitti the Germans put on the Berlin Wall. I served in the Berlin Brigade from 1980-1983 and actually touched it while it was still standing for what that's worth.
@@SidetrackAdventures Rudolf Hess - Hitler's vice chancellor was still alive back then and one of the tours I went on we visited Spandau Prison where he was held. The place was huge and he was the only inmate.
Very instructive to see the beautiful, inspiring, and hopeful graffiti on the Western side starkly contrasted with the naked and depressing concrete on the Eastern side, the products of two systems of government.
Interesting! I was in college when the wall came down. One of my professors had grown up in East Germany, and her mother still lived there. She told a story about buying bananas for her mother at a West Germany fruit stand before crossing the border. It wasn't until the East German police had boarded the train for inspection that she realized the bananas were wrapped in a West German newspaper. Fortunately, the newspaper was not discovered, and her mother was happy to have something new to read, but it could have resulted in my prof being removed from the train and detained. It's easy to forget how crazy things have been. In 2007 we just drove straight into Austria from Germany...just a sign, 'Welcome to Austria'. We were expecting the whole checkpoint thing. Too many old movies, lol. The view of the Alps was one of the most stunning things I've ever seen. :)
@@SidetrackAdventures I think an ironic/non-ironic wall around the wall with a non-taggible sign would be awesome. It’s too bad, but that’s what some people cause the rest of us to put us with. Expenditures and security measures that sometimes end up unsightly.
They need to put some concrete barriers surrounding the wall so some yahoo doesn't run his truck/atv into it and knock it down. You know some teenager will be responsible.
Hi. Thank you for this. I take it your looking at Big bear ? I would ski the re from 8 a.m. until 5. Then, we'd drive home and have a bonfire on S. CARLSBAD beach. We did this DOZENS of times thru the 80s and 90s. Oh yeah, when you could pull off to the side of P.C.H. and walk down to the beach...FOR FREE !
The Nixon Library in Yorba Linda has a few sections of the wall as well as life statues of several political figures at the time.. Marine One was put on dosplay after being restored by the March field Air Museum.
always fun to learn another unique piece of history from your channel! thank u for highlighting history off the beaten path! fingers crossed there's one day a video on the old SD&AE, better known as "the impossible railroad" or the Coronado Branch line! both are excellent pieces of SoCal history
Glad you enjoyed it. Both are on my list. I actually planned on doing something on the Coronado Branch Line recently and even brought my bicycle to Coronado. Forgot the camera though lol.
I like your idealism in dreaming about the educational potential… in San Bernardino. Seriously, we have to hold onto history, good or bad, so that we do better in the future.
Hopefully they do something. I think even adding a sign saying what it is might make people think twice about vandalizing it. Then again, probably not.
When I was a kid, I had a dream the Berlin Wall would come down-two weeks before it actually occurred. When I shared my dream with random people, their overall response was, nice dream but it’ll never happen. Two weeks passed-and the wall came tumbling down.
My mom bought me a golf ball size chunk of the Berlin Wall back in day. Not sure if it’ll be worth anything ever. I did just pick up an East German flag for $5 at a flea market.
This got to be some parallel universe!! A nice part of San Bernardino & no one has graffiti-ed or try to destroy this piece of the wall on display out in the open?! Who are you & what have you done with the real SB!!
Regardless what you thought of Reagan, you have to hand it to him for winning the cold war & helping end the USSR. No one else in history will be to say that. !
Served 4 years in West Berlin, along with my family. My children only realized years later that West Berlin was wholly within the Soviet controlled East Germany and the closest road, train, or air route to West Germany was about 110 miles. To realize the wall came down in 1989, after more than 28 years, was/is surreal.
And the best of all fact is Reagan had nothing to do with the wall. Even if Bob Dole would have been president the wall and USSR was falling however Reagan too credit for it.
Who would vandalize this? Obviously the ignorant. Cool video. Love your comment that Reagan "may have had a successful career in politics". Funny stuff.
That was funny, he had a political career? You could say that, yes! 😂😂. Thanks for taking me where I never wudda gone! ❤️❤️❤️❤️. I'm GLAD I got to see it.
I might still have photos from the original wall with the original giffettee before it was vandalized with the message tear down this Wall. I live in Temecula Valley now. (Wine Country) But I think I remember Sig Ep had a Fraternity house near that park between 2007-2009 (California State University of San Bernardino). I saw the wall driving I knew it was here so this was click bate but that was before you said it was installed. Hmm.
There is a nice piece of the wall at Chapman University in Orange california. It has the original graffiti on it. Also too, the University has a columbarium. And the California Gold collection.
Hey there, just love your channel, esp the local stuff. Do you publish weekly. Looking forward to watching them all. The Desert Tower got me going. Thanks and congrats. from San Diego Douglas, yes, also a big fan of Goat Cnyn Trestle.
Another FYI - there is a section of the Berlin Wall in front of the Mountain View, CA Public Library. Theirs is protected by a glass case, which should have been done with the one in San Bernardino. You can see it on Google Maps street view if you know where to look.
It's odd, municipalities all over this nation are declaring bankruptcies but house prices just keep getting higher and higher. Think the nation's a bit broken? 🙁🙄🇺🇲
Thats obviously an upper scale neighborhood . Which surprises me as I never knew there was an upper scale area of that city . I'm pleasantly surprised !!!!
I live not far from that park, I was living in Germany in the early 60s during the Cold War, my father was stationed there. I never got to see the Berlin wall until I moved to San Bernardino.
I used to live in that neighborhood when that piece of the Berlin Wall was first put there. I moved away from that area about five years ago. Thanks for helping me recall the fond memories of walking my faithful dog in that park and nearby areas. How did you hear of that little park? Take care and thanks for the memories.
I’ve actually seen a few segment of the Berlin Wall myself. The National Museum of the US Air Force at Wright Patterson AFB has a few. Oddly enough, Hard Rock Cafe has at CityWalk in Universal Orlando Resort. Almost nobody knows about that one as it is hidden.
How entirely random! It looks like a regular neighborhood park (granted in a BEAUTIFUL area) and to have that piece just standing there. Agree, it would really take it over the top to have some plaque or sign providing some context to what it is and why it is there. Pretty cool find!

I’d like to see San Bernardino do more to fulfill their promises about this park. Reagan, the wall and history deserve more.
At the very least some sort of sign would be good!

SAN BERNA-GHETTO!! Not the most ideal place to go!

Why is a statue of Viladimir Lenin in the middle of Seattle (Fremont)?
Is there? I'll be in that area next month, I'll have to look.
