  • While other electric cars trickle into the market, the 2012 Ford Focus Electric is the closest competitor yet to the 2012 Nissan Leaf, which currently reigns as the most popular all-electric car despite its initial tepid sales. Overall, the Focus Electric is a competent ride, according to Cars.com Executive Editor Joe Wiesenfelder. But how does it stack up against the Leaf?

One thing he doesn't mention is the money a person can save driving these cars. With the Federal and state tax credits ($12,500 here in GA) I am considering getting a Focus EV. Between taxes, fuel, maintenance, lower payment and the promo 1.9% 72mos interest rate I could save as much as $16000 in the first year compared to what we are spending for my old lady to commute in her 2011 Mustang GT premium. I don't even believe in global warming or peak oil...I am just interested in being more frugal.

The Mitsubishi i is sold in Japan as a gas model too.

You're actually wrong. The I MiEV isn't a distinct battery powered car. It started life as a Kei car (a very very small car found in Japan).
Also, everyone I know doesn't pronounce MiEV "Meev". It's usually pronounced "My E-V" or My Ev" like My Electric Vehicle.

@davidhalifax I agree to a point. I think that the 4 hours would be fine, if I could drive longer. However, your smartphone won't even power up to full in a hour, and you expect a car too? I expect a quick charge feature much like Apple has with like the iPhone and such (80% in 2 hours, 4 hours total) but not full in a hour.

Seems like a pretty neat car although i'm not a fan of the electric generation of vehicles. Best part is the clearly "Aston Martin inspired" front grill. I'm pretty sure thats because Ford is somehow affiliated with AM

The world is still not ready for these slow charging electric cars yet. Car manufacturers should perfect the electric car in terms of range, charging time and accessibility of charging....oh and price. Give these cars another 10 years and i'm sure it will be better by then.

He's saying that the chevy volt, nissan leaf were first made as a plug in/gas (for the volt) plug in (for the leaf) Where the Ford Focus was first gas only. This is, however, not completely true.. as Mitsubishi sold a variant that looked like the i-MiEV in Japan only which was a gasoline powered car. But many say the i-MiEV is completely new.

I agree with what you're saying. I don't see too much future for Electric, even Hybrid cars really.

    a) it's not propelled by the gas engine b) the gas engine only comes in if you need it, otherwise it is ENTIRELY electric....

EV's have a future and we're also in it. You charge EV's overnight. People rarely drive 100km+ everyday. All types of cars go flat eventually. Since EV's have so few parts, even including the battery production, there's much less energy needed to produce them, even compared to a Smart Fortwo. Therefore, electric vehicles do help save the environment. It's clear that you know little of EV's. I don't understand what you see in hydrogen at all.

I agree that electric cars are not so great, but CO2 is carbon dioxide and not a pollutant. I believe what you meant was CO (carbon monoxide).

Nobody is stupid for buying a particular model of car. People buy cars for all kinds of reasons. Usually emotionally driven. Quit being such a big judgmental Canadian. You called the Ford electric car stupid and it my American feelings.

  • @gaveintothedarkness

If you buy a car to be trendy or to impress people you are stupid no matter what. But I am very cool with people buying a car because they like the styling and the design of it, and they get value and enjoyment from it. I dont even like Audi's all that much they were given as an example because people can relate those brands to higher end cars. I could easily say Lexus, Infinity or Acura could I not?
Or do you think Lexus drivers are stupid because they are buying a upscale Camry?

    Start troll:
I see no future in the Battery powered car. They are just inconvenient. The battery takes a long time to charge, not enough range, batteries eventually go flat... the pollution from the stuff that the batteries are made of is even worst than the CO2 from our current cars. Overall they are for people who fool themselves into thinking that they are saving the environment, therefore are a better person than everyone else.
    End Troll.
The way I see it, Hydrogen is the future.

What a stupid car. I'd rather get the fully loaded titanium version of the Focus and use the cost savings to spend on gas or you know pay off some debt or invest. Point is, this car is monumentally stupid. Your paying for a trendy car to impress people to think you are eco conscious while the rest of us just think you are a fool with their money.
40K, you could almost buy a BMW or an Audi or a Merc for that price.
