My dad did the upholstery on a White Steamer. It was beautiful. The own loved to punk service stations by telling the attendant that he needs a fill up, then he tells him that he needs to check the level. He’d open the water tank and light a match to see the level. Of course the attendant ran away not knowing it was the water tank.
Jay....you are a genius...and alot more knowledgeable then people know !! and not just some wealthy guy that knows nothing about the cars...nice to watch your video's on Steamers... not an easy car to understand and you know it well... I grew up with a 1916 Stanley in my family...
I don’t leave comments, my brother and I have been fascinated with old cars from 1900 through 1920 ever since our great grandmother would tell us stories about the cars she would see people driving in the town she lived in back in those days. When she and our great grandfather were married in 1908 , great grandfather bought a Stanley steamer and she was scared to death of it because of all the noises it made and it was too fast. She would laugh when she would talk about it.
I worked on a 1905 White Steamer Runabout Model E that took 1st. place at the 2014 Concur De Elegance. I did machine work on the waterpump shaft. I also made the punch and die set that stamped out boiler spacers for one of Mr. Lenos cars. My friend Mike has built boilers for Mr. Leno.
Tag on the back said previously owned and restored by Warren Weiant, Newark Ohio. I knew Warren, I remember him as an old car buff here in central Ohio, he had many oldies, including a 1909 Simplex. My dad remembers him having this car at his Lake Erie island house in the 60s, and Warren picked him up at the airport in it when he came for a visit one time. Warren was a long time private pilot, we bought his last airplane, a 1946 Cessna 140 from him in 1973, I believe he was in his late 70s then...great memories!
Everyone knows that you have plenty of car's that can do crazy burnouts.....this one is definitely a reliable cruiser from a bygone era....still every bit as beautiful as any muscle car doing a burnout.....I've watched this one a bunch of times....good stuff as always Jay....👍
I love how he showed the diagram and explained the concept of how the engine works. My favorites by far are the steam autos. I can't get the idea of an electrically-heated steam-powered-engine out of my head. Think about it: You can use a system of electric heating coils to boil the water faster, and you could even use the excess steam to re-generate the electricity needed to run the heating coils, lol.
Watching how the gasoline spraying works on this really shows how easy an accident could happen. It's a wonder it hasn't happened before this. Here's to a speedy recovery, Jay.
Wow Jay Leno is indeed the King of Cool, just no doubt about it!! Can't wait to visit Jay Leno or even just get as close as possible! Maybe a sighting who knows! Along with Tom Brady and Donald Trump I just don't know any other celebrities alive I would like to spend a day with!

I've always been a huge fan of steam trans my whole life, the truck shay of course being my favorite type of steam engine. The process for starting this white is almost identical to starting an oil powered steam engine. The only difference is the steam powered generator for the headlamp on a steam engine, there doesn't seem to be one on this White, but I also may be mistaken.
He is so funny. He reminds me of a dad in the way that he get's all his internet terminology wrong. 'You can upload this from the website", referring to youtube as the 'website'. Reminds me of my own dad.
When I was 13, living in Chino, CA, (approx 1963) I did some work for my mother's boss at his home. He had a 1911 White steam car in one of his barns. I couldn't see much of it, but I'm pretty sure it was a light colored touring car, with a soft top. I've always wondered what became of that car.
According to the news, a 1907 White Steam Car is the car that Jay was working on when he got burned. It’s either this one or his other one. Sending you prayers Jay 🙏
Jay, If you EVER want to go cross country in this magic steam carpet, from LA to NC, let me know, I'd happily join you! What an adventure! Dead Serious ❤
My gr grandfather bought a White Steamer in 1907. How do I know? A newpaper article where he was arrested for speeding through the small windy town of Vanderbilt PA on July 4th! They had never had a speeder in town before! My gr grandfather, James Schoonmaker Laughrey, has the distinction of being the first person ever issued a speeding ticket in Fayette County PA! They let him go with a $10 fine.
These steam cars are my favorite videos....I cant help but think how screwed you would be though if you were cutting firewood in the winter and happened to cut yourself bad with an ax and were bleeding to death and had to get the car started to get yourself to the doctor. LOL
I hate to ask this Jay, but happens to your car collection once you have shuffled off this mortal coil? Its such an amazing collection it would be a shame to break it up. I'd like to see them all go into a museum, but I'd like to see them used on the road as well. Perhaps a small circuit where people could hire and drive for a few laps?
Such a beautiful automobile. Thank you for sharing this! Would enjoy a more "in-depth" video on the glorious Baker Electrics....along with features on the lesser electric marques. Thank you!!
hah, rewatching this oldie after Jay's latest White 40HP car vid on the last week of December 2021 9 years later, and I have to say, Jay really should be wearing a pair of WW-I vintage aviator goggles while driving this thing. :-D
Can't find the diagram on the website. Guessing its changed since this episode aired. Sad, because I would love to have the diagram for educational purposes.
hi Jay its me again !!!! the Skyline gtr r32 guy !! I challenge you to make a video on the Skyline gtr and/or on the Mazda rx7 . They will do a burnout, steam puts out a lot of torque but being a hundred years old, he doesn't want to break something. The old steam locomotives would spin those old heavy iron wheels with no prob. I've also seen a 1910 Stanley steamer do a burnout, that was funny, hissssssss squeal lol.
I know they don't have front brakes. You don't use brakes to do a regular burnout, just open up throttle and the tires will spin as you take off. You're thinking of power braking where you hold a little pressure on the brakes to hold a burnout.
it would take a lot of electricity to heat up the water enough. how would you get that electricity? it's a good idea in principle, let's both think about a way to do it :)
How about a couple of truck batteries and then steam to power the huge alternator to keep it going? With that kind of torque, you wouldn't even notice the difference.

That does make sense, tho if you run it weekly probably not a problem big volumes of water don’t freeze very fast and if you empty it before storage seems like it would be okay
