The "people eat too much because they think the world exists for their pleasure" is so horrible. If you watch an episode of My 600lb Life, there's a huge percentage, nearly all of them actually, who are dealing with some kind of major trauma in their life, and food becomes a form of self-medication. It DOESN'T feel good to overeat. I used to do it constantly. I felt so much shame about it and wondered what the hell was wrong with me that I couldn't stop. A lot of these things are not because people are just selfish and want to do what feels good (of course some skinny guy who's never struggled with weight would say that shit). It's a compulsive behavior that's rooted in some other issue. People need therapy and better mental health resources, not more guilt.

The beginning on the treatment of poor people hits so close to home. We're okay now, but for about 3 years my family didn't have a dollar to our names. My husband, who had been the provider since I had our son, was injured badly enough he could no longer work, and at the time I just could not find work anywhere. It was Hell. Food stamps are what kept us alive.
I still vividly remember a time I went out with our son. He was only 3 at the time, and badly wanted some goldfish. We'd been psychotically practical about food purchases and we still had a bit on the card so, yeah, of course I got my 3yo some damn goldfish. A woman at the store in line saw my SNAP card and went off on me over the damn goldfish about how they were the reason I was fat (because clearly I was buying them for myself not the 3yo I was holding), how we were disgusting leeches, and how I should have my son taken away. Scared the shit out of my kid, and made an already miserable point in our lives much worse.
I also clearly remember the giant cross necklace she was wearing.
People are so fucking wild man. It's disgusting how many "Good Loving Christians" would love to see a struggling family starve, and their baby thrown in foster care.

    THANK you for this series!
Fat-shaming DOES NOT "work". Study after study has proven this, and it's not hard to understand: making folks feel badly about themselves doesn't motivate, it's exactly the opposite. For many, it's crushing. And anyone rude enough to fat-shame someone doesn't care about that person, so can it with the flimsy excuses like "it shortens their lifespan" / "I 'care' about 'role models'". It's B.S. that proves itself wrong. It pushes many folks into disordered eating - "diets", sketchy supplements, substances, & of course ana/buli - and that is not "helping them", it's killing them. If they don't already have a history, they will, and the lifespan for those is terrifyingly short. Even for those skinny kids who were never "overweight" but it wasn't about fatness - like me, and like my friend who'd always been thin as a rail but her well-hidden ana&buli stole her from this world that never deserved such a beautiful person. I don't know how she had so much room in her heart, but she did, in spite of everything she'd been through in her short life. I miss her so much.
To anyone reading this who's desperate to be thinner, please don't resort to starving or purging. It's miserable and it's not worth it, and it's dead serious. And it is a slow, agonising end. (If the cardiac doesn't end you, then you'll languish in the hospital as all your organ systems start shutting down across days or weeks.)
    "Love yourself first."

It sucks having your own reality and self image twisted by your authority figures. Also, "How To ADHD" is a great channel and the gal in front of [and behind] the camera is really gentle, kind, sweet, overall great for folks who may feel a bit... idk, bad, guilty, anxious, afraid, etc. (Just listing mine, anyway. I grew up with my food being very controlled by my mom and fat shamed by my dad. If I ate an apple one day I wasn’t allowed to eat a banana because that would be too much sugar. My mom counted out the amount of grapes I was allowed to have and would constantly order one item of food for the two of us to share, leaving me hungry every time. It wasn’t until about a year ago that I discovered that the rest of the world believes that oatmeal is good for you which shocked me because we were only allowed to eat oatmeal on special ocasiones (too many carbs). Anyway, my point is that now I struggle a lot with binge eating. I was never allowed to listen to my body and now it’s really difficult for me to know when I’m hungry and especially when I’m full. I’ve been working on it and it takes a lot of self love and patience. These types of messages are incredibly counterproductive and harmful.

    • @AngryReptileKeeper
      @AngryReptileKeeper 6 місяців тому +7

Right? These people act like countless generations of genetic adaptations to help us avoid starvation aren't a thing. Nature _wants_ us fat. That's why we don't suddenly lose the desire to eat the moment we've consumed enough calories to live and maintain a "normal" weight. Because that fat, as far as your biology is concerned, is the difference between life and death in times of scarcity, and the more of it you have, the better. It doesn't matter that food is abundant and readily available to most of us these days. That biological hardwiring and drive that helped our species survive for the overwhelming majority of our existence doesn't just go away because we've had plenty to eat for a single century.

For example if I think about how gluttony is sinful what I think about isn't low income people eating McDonald's but more about the contrast between food waste in wealthy countries and hunger in poorer countries, or how some foods that are seen as status symbols like foie gras require methods that are abusive to animals or harmful to the environment.
Tldr I definitely think there are ways that people cause serious harm because they want to eat food they don't need and that would be interesting to discuss.

I agree with what Martian said; it would be very interesting to discuss this topic from a secular point of view, because of the ethical implications of how we source our food and how unethical it is to waste so much. And the abuse of animals for food is probably something that our descendants will look upon unfavourably, and rightly so.

Yeah a great example is stuff like caviar or shark fin soup, they are seen as delicacies but come at the expense of animals who are deemed vulnerable to over-harvesting very easily. Caviar is usually collected by gutting female sturgeon and taking their eggs thus prevent the life cycle of the species from continuing yet people still doing it despite it basically killing their job. Meanwhile hunting sharks for just their fins is incredibly wasteful and attacks animals who naturally are at low concentrations then prey fish we happily overfish.
Yet not many people care about this cause well it is tradition and status. Sturgeons are important bottom dwellers they carry nutrients back upstream and are valuable predators and all sharks are valuable for their environment.

The church sent in people to “teach” me and my ex-wife about everything; from budgeting to healthy living. These were people from our ward (congregation) and they just happened to be better off than me. No training, no schooling, no licenses… We were being judged and told what to do….including not eating so much… My ex was a little larger than many and it was hard for her because she had been teased as a kid for her weight. As a fat person, thank you for this! I definitely think you should expound more on the "telling poor people what to do" and specifically what to eat! That could be it's own video. I am fat, poor, and me and my family are all nuerospicy and have food allergies and aversions. I have the holy grail of things people can't help but comment incessantly on. The food wars become exhausting.
My skinniest kid eats the most "junk" but those are his safe foods and he is autistic with ARFID. My safe foods are veggies mostly. But I am fat. The amount of times I've been food shamed at the register for buying my kids' safe foods and not mine because I can't afford them, is ridiculous. I live in the Bible belt. Most of not all of that shame comes from Christians.
Also, I know this is a nebulous topic, but the church's concern trolling is such obvious rubbish. Dietary needs and restrictions are different for everybody, as does everyone's ability to access, purchase, store, and make food. There are plenty of times that I've had a blistering migraine or pregnancy related illness/disability and still had to parent and function, which meant I ordered take out because the options were eat take out or not eat because I just didn't have anything left in me to cook a whole ass meal. Add to this, going to a food pantry for food (I do) often gives us a box of totally unrelated, expired or about to expire, food items that I need to cook soon and still need to buy ingredients for at the store to complete. Sometimes I can't do that and using my hoarded gift cards and rewards points at Wendy's is both more cost effective and healthy for me and my family and being shamed for it is beyond fucking obnoxious. Super size that drink so all five of my kids can share lemonade.
Lastly, thanks for another amazing and validating episode.💜💜

We also live on disability due to other health issues (I am visually impaired and I have arthritis and fibro) I'm fat but I eat less food and healthier food than my son and dil. Mostly because I have an intolerance to sugar. One tip I can offer is to buy seconds/rejects fruit and veg if you can find them, and slow cooker freezer meals are a life saver. We are also lucky that my dil is obsessed with chickens, she wanted to get them as soon as she moved in and she takes good care of them, so we get regular eggs in exchange for kitchen scraps.

I so appreciate the work you put into this! It really helps me dig back through and recontextualize what I had believed growing up.
Religion really tried to fill in our understanding of mental health before that field was further developed. It's really unfortunate that their practices exacerbate eating disorders (demonize binge eating, glorify restrictive eating disorders), and try to push appearance as a proxy for moral worth. Or the line it tries to draw between the mind and body in pushing cravings as irrelevant information your body is signaling that your mind must ignore. Instead, we know that we should value our body and learn from what it's signaling (understanding that our mind is a part of our body as well, mental health is health).

    • @woodygilson3465

I spent TWICE what I thought I would. I had to bust into the cash I had just pulled for rent. Thank gawd I could cover it, and I have family that can help if needed.
But I felt so ashamed, like I can BARELY afford food. And if I didn't have a safety net I'd be in a panic. My anxiety has been super bad- like I had to take time off bad. And it just added to my fears & guilt.
This actually made me feel MUCH better. Like it's not just me this is happening to. I remember being thankful I'm petite and don't eat much. Which is pretty fed up on rexaminination.

I watched this spread over my shift today, and in defiance of the shame I was feeling, I ate my breakfast and lunch while finishing this. I was in Overeaters Anonymous for a few years, and this is the exact shit that fucked me up. I had to give my hunger to god because I could not be trusted with food. I had no agency over my body, and my weight was intrinsically linked to my moral standing. So I had cake with my black coffee, and a full fat sandwich for lunch, both considered "wrong" foods. Being kind and letting myself eat tasty things means I don't feel the need to binge. While I haven't lost weight, I haven't gained and I don't hate myself every moment of every day.
One day, I would love to have your take on twelve step programs. I'm someone who has stayed sober despite the actual harm I've received from trying to force myself into that ridged system. I thought that it was the first time I belonged anywhere, but I thought I was broken because I couldn't "give myself over to a power greater than myself". For all they tried to say they weren't religious, there was definitely a doctrine and I am still trying to unlearn some of the shit that was drilled into me.
