I think "updating" the orchestrations defeats the point of a show specifically written to present the viewpoint of the counter-culture movement of the 60s. It is inexorably tied to that period, and full of *very* specific references (lyrical, cultural, and musical) to the late 1960s. What makes it an enduring piece of art is that in so specifically examining that viewpoint, "Hair" becomes timeless by addresses universal themes of self-expression, belonging, and rebellion against authority.
Hm. Why were there three soloists for "Black Boys" and only one soloist for "White Boys?" That was odd. And it was odd to hear the "Black Boys" girls singing higher than the "White Boys" girls.
Jackie Burns before she sang “Defying Gravity”
