I recall an interview he did early on where he said that Cassie encouraged him to play the character more like himself ... like he would be when he was home with the family. And Pierce has said that he prefers to have a strong woman in his life. Laura was certainly that for Steele, as well.

I still remember seeing that episode as a teenager. I rewatched it tonight. I loved the way she was comforted by him and he said he wouldn't have been able to ask her tonight. He was loving and reassuring.
