    you know a series is gonna be great when the cast just has so much fun in the set.
    I mean, who hasn't dreamed of being dressed like a pirate, walking the streets of medieval europe, drinking and fencing with friends and gorgeos women? AND THEY EVEN GET PAID FOR THAT! no way they won't be having fun.

      I'm glad to hear that her amazing creations for this wonderful show did not go unnoticed. Although I have been reading the criticism others have said about this specific work of hers to not be truely accurate to the 16th century. It regardless is a beautiful showcasing of fashion especially the detailed and distressed leather doublets.

    Why are people complaining about the historical inaccuracies? This is based on *Dumas*. Historical inaccuracies for the sake of drama, flair, and fun are very in keeping with the spirit of his Three Musketeers. A strict adherence to historical accuracy would have missed half the point of the whole adventure, imo.
    Anyway, I loved Tom Burke's story about his constant search for leather costumes.

    • @alexharrison2743
      @alexharrison2743 3 роки тому +3

      Yes, exactly - Dumas gave Richelieu's age in 1625 as 36 in the book, when (if he'd had the means to research it, of course) he could have looked up that the cardinal was actually 40 by then. It doesn't matter, and the enjoyment of it all is the main thing

      The Musketeers of the Guard, which is the regiment Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and d'Artagnan are a part of, had a uniform of knee-high boots, knee-length tabard with a fleur de lis, and a wide brimmed hat. They probably wore a doublet with a fleur de lis stamped on it as well under the tabard. As for weapons they carried a rapier and a parrying dagger, pistols (snapback), and a musket, along with a powder horn and musket balls.

    I understand it was a creative choice to dress musketeers in leather and dark colours, but it's a pity they don't elaborate on it in the video. The iconic blue tunics with crosses were so much brighter and more beautiful, if you ask me. I just looked it up, and there are in fact contemporary sketches showing those tunics/tabards. I miss that in the show.

    I’m working on a Halloween comic, where three boys go as the three musketeers. Thing is, I don’t intend for them to be thoroughly in costume; just basic stuff, like fake beards, hats, and I suppose...long coats? What would you recommend? Google images shows different Musketeers, and I don’t want to plagiarize; I want to go with what’s broad and basic about their style. Plus, so many references is like so many treats at a bakery: how are you going to choose. See what I mean?

      Phoebe and director Toby Haynes said they were trying to get away from the old idea of musketeers in flouncy hats and feathers (1:12) but that's probably exactly what a Halloween costume would be. Not sure the weathered leather is readily available. Maybe some day :)

    • @moreston4366
      @moreston4366 7 років тому +3

      the only leather real Musketeers wore was the belt, gloves and shoes, some 17th century Musketeers did wear leather jacks over their normal wool clothing for general protection from swords, the woollen buff coat was much more popular among Musketeers, Leather jacks were preferred by Horsemen who more frequently engaged in melee.
      Leather won't protect you from much, Bullets will kill you no problem, Thrusts from melee weapons will be no problem, blunt impact, no problem, only slashes will be slowed down a bit meaning it might not do as much damage, but a well timed and well placed slash would get through.
      The original clothing of the Musketeers looked much cooler the show kind of ruined it.
      think of all the disadvantages of leather too, must get pretty hot, dark boring colours.

      Yorkshireman well the colors in the t.v. show was really nice they had red blue brown and black and leather was one of the first forms of armor idk where you got your info from but leather is great against swords and arrows yes a bullet will go thru but just like an arrow and sword is slows the force down so it doesn't go in very deep in those days stopping it an inch or two inches can very much save your life while leather is harder to enter the body but yet cotton has been known to kill you cuz it's so hard to get out of the body with out leaving a few pieces still in there and that's how you get an infection

    I think, it's a real blight on so much modern media, that all the costumes need to be edgy and gruffy and worn-out and everything. And the result ist this uniformity of washed-out, shit-brown rags that noone would have liked to wear ...
