      It probably would be a good idea to actually PRACTICE underwater taking the Powerhead and placing it on your spear . That will allow you to not be super scared trying to hurry when it comes time to use the Powerhead . There is no point being more nervous than you have to be when the need arises .

    Dude! You're the best! I really appreciate you passing on the knowledge!
    Making a bunch of these for cheap is way better than buying 1 or 2 for like $100 each and these are more versatile
    You're greatly appreciated!

    Great video thank you. Just be aware tha there are actually many cartriges that utilise the "large rifle" style primer you refer to. I agree with your opinion that this large rifle primer type ammunition is the wisest choice for powerheads of this design. Cheers.

    If you see this message ever, thanks so much. I started kayaking a couple years ago in saltwater and three times I have been harassed by sharks. One rammed my kayak and tried to again before I punched him in the nose with my paddle. It was a juvenile great white about 6 feet. I just paddled back to shore as fast as I could. I believe it was just a test bite to see if my kayak was edible. There were scrapes and bite marks on bottom and side. If it had been a bigger mature one it probably would have chomped on it good and I’d had been thrown into the water.

    I just found your tutorial. Nice. Lots of extra info.
    I was thinking about the pipe length and the natural tendency to put one’s hand over the end in an emergency.
    What do you think? Would it be worth the sacrifice in weight to make the tube 4.5 - 5.5 inches long to make it easier for big, or maybe even gloved, hands to quickly place it on the spear without putting the hand on the end?
    Also, what do you think about pouring a small amount of epoxy on the primer end (1/8 inch perhaps) after the bullet is already glued in the pipe? Would that provide a little security against accidental discharge without interfering with the intended actions of a sharp spear striking it?
    I’ve never used one yet, so I am curious about your ideas.

    Thank you so much for this video. I am not, as you put it "A rich guy." I've been looking for how to make these affordably for an awful long time. What kind of fuel hose are you using for this? That's not something I'm savvy about, and I want to make sure I'm getting the right stuff, since you've already done the experimenting.

    • @keywestspearguns
      @keywestspearguns 7 років тому +1

      sorry for late response- it is fuel hose from west marine store- it has 1/2"o.d. and i.d. of 5/16"(actually a bit smaller)
      if you want to use different hose - it is fine as long as it is 1/2"o.d.- you can drill the i.d to get it right - so that is not as important

    Great tutorial. Getting ready to make one of these. Hopefully never have to use it. I have a thick aluminum pipe that is the right size. Im sure steel is much better than but if I’m mot planning on reusing it will aluminum be effective enough?

    • @daveobsoleteammo4547
      @daveobsoleteammo4547 Рік тому

      He was talking steel because what he found to use was affordable and easy to get the correct size material to make his housings out of . Yes , aluminum would work fine as the whole idea is a housing that will not break apart when the ammo goes off .

  • @robu3468

    Do on one side you have the gas hose. On the other you push the bullet in. But do you push in until you touch the hose??

    • @daveobsoleteammo4547
      @daveobsoleteammo4547 Рік тому

      No , as the spear tip needs to go past the end of the hose at least an inch or two . He said to place your cartridge ( he calls them bullets ) so the front end is just inside being flush with the end of the housing . Then you seal off the front end and doing that fixes the cartridge in place so it will not slide down inside . When placing the finished product on your spear you slide it ( carefully ) down through the hose and keep pushing it slowly until the tip of the spear just touches the primer on the cartridge .

    Jason, good video. I am looking into the .308 and I agree with you that a larger primer is important. I am considering using 316 Stainless for the added corrosion resistance. I will have to buy a solid blank and have a machine shop bore out the 1/2" hole as you specified. But my question is how thick should the wall be? Is 1/8" wall sufficient (meaning a .75" outside diameter), or should I go with an extra thick .25" wall (meaning 1.00" outside diameter)? I am concerned that if the PH is too heavy, then that may be a problem (not enough force to allow the shaft to strike the primer). What are your thoughts on 316 Stainless and 1/8" or 1/4" walls? Any other suggestions or thoughts?

    • @keywestspearguns
      @keywestspearguns 3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the reply. 1/8” is plenty. I would keep it as small as possible since weight might be an issue- since if it was really heavy it wouldn’t be as convenient.
      I made this video as a PSA and as a starting point to investigate further. I cant believe I have 19k views.

    This is like Cheech and Chong make a bomb. Very entertaining but it's easier to use a .410 shotgun cartridge. It's the same OD as a .45ACP, it's allread flat up front and easy to seal with nail polish, silicon or wax and it has a huge easy to hit primer. But perhaps not as entertaining.

    • @keywestspearguns
      @keywestspearguns 3 роки тому

      I have never done it with shotgun bullets but you could use .410 gauge since the outside diameter is around 1/2” also.
      Idk how much water intrusion is an issue with those shells - or how big the primer is- since billets with small primers lead to misfires. Those can be lethal if you need this to chase off and angry 1000# bull shark

  • @HHHGeorge
    @HHHGeorge 4 роки тому

    Relying on the actual spear to discharge the primer to make all this work is fantasy. For rifle primers like those on the ".308" you would have to be closer than with a powerhead using a ".45 ACP" round! You may have noticed that he had a sharp point on his spear. Either the user will have a lot of misfires (due to shooting at a range where the spear does not have enough force to ignite the primer) or a few gas blow back episodes when the primer is punctured by the spear. Does Mr. Tiller realize that rifle primers are thicker than pistol primers and therefore would require more force to cause the back of the primer to strike the internal primer anvil to create the required reaction? His warning of how to mount the power-head on the spear to avoid injuring your hands should set off alarm bells in anyone's mind. If you are thinking of going after large and or dangerous underwater game with this set up good luck.

      a channel called headhunter spearfishing uses slip-on powerheads with success. I have no idea what caliber he uses, but in a video titled "3 bulls" he has to shoot a bull shark that was circling him. the powerhead was very effective.

    • @keywestspearguns
      @keywestspearguns 3 роки тому

      Great point except your ideas ARE fantasy - since I have used them many many times and they work fine. Slip on power heads work well. Don’t you think a spear that weighs 1 lb has enough kinetic energy to rupture a primer? It does irl - but I am surprised you would think it wouldn’t .?? As far as very sharp spears- I have considered this and forgot to address it in my video. Once again- it is a good hypothesis but doesn’t bear out in real life. I am a commercial spear fisherman and use these regularly to hunt and also to chase off bull sharks. Truth is- unless you are making razor Sharp tips on ur spears with a grinder- it’s just not an issue. Even if you did - I’m not sure it is an issue irl - as far as on paper - it is plausible. Thanks for your response either way.
