      If your jaw is long and not in good shape you will need a surgery. If not i think it will be possible to fix that without surgery. But the best thing is to talk with your orthodontist

    I'm in my last year in dental school in Canada. There are two types of Classes/categories when it comes to orthodontics: 1) dental classification and 2) the skeletal classification. This patient was only able to receive this type of treatment for his Class III malocclusion (a.k.a. underbite) because his skeletal bones are not Class III, it was much closer to a class I ("normal" profile). The issue is with the dental Class III, which means his teeth are in class III position. In other words, his bones are in the right place but his teeth were not. Therefore, it was just being able to move so many teeth in a non-traumatic way to bring the teeth back to where they should be. No doubt, a lot of complexity goes into this type of treatment. In cases like these, I would highly recommend treatment through an orthodontist as opposed to a general practitioner. The reality is that most people who have a Class III malocclusion tend to have the skeletal Class III type, and for that you will require oral surgery, there is no other way around it. I thought I would post this so that people are properly informed. Thanks.

      Jason, what about the M.E.A.W. technique? Does this correct skeletal Class III malocclusions? Used in conjunction with reverse headgear, I thought that one could avoid orthognathic surgery? Please correct me if I am wrong.

      Good point. Often, people are now try to not do surgery and opt out for M.E.A.U.W. or just stopping at braces. If it’s Class 3 with skeletal issues it’s best to get the surgery. I am getting the surgery.

    The use of elastics will be based on the molar relationship in every stage. Sometime, we went too far. That is why we changed to class II elastics. Thanks for pointing that out. I do not use Delaire. I trust miniscrews. It is easy to use and more comfortable for patients.

    Some People in the comments think they might not need surgery after this video , I thought so too and I got confused because my doctor told me that I needed it but now I realized that this case doesn’t have a problem with the jaw itself so it was possible to fix it without surgery , but in other cases in which the jaw is misplaced and needs surgery can be fixed by braces but not for a long period of time the solution is gonna be temporary so the best thing to do is get surgery

You would get more exposure and more views which would help a lot more people. I wanted to see if you had a video on over bites and it took me a while to find it on your channel. All in all, you are proving that surgery is not necessary, and I thank you for your service Dr. Chang.

    I had class 3 open bite and mine looks worst than this because my lower jaw is short by 7mm and doctor advised to proceed with surgery. They used buccal screw to fix my upper jaw so that I only have to do one jaw surgery. previously I only had 2 molars on each side biting and the rest are just open. so it was bad. almost 3 years into the treatment and im on my finishing process. I cant wait to be able to chew again.

    I know exactly how you feel. I have an open bite and I don't open my mouth to smile. But don't be afraid of the braces, they help your teeth get back in shape and in no time (be patient it takes a while) you'll have a perfect smile. And with the eating problem, just take your time and chew slowly. Trust me, you're not the only person with this problem.

  • @violetstorm117
    @violetstorm117 11 років тому

    And also remember, these bands are required for you to wear everyday. That means day and night, and put them on before you go to sleep. The only time it is ok to take them off is when you're eating, about to brush your teeth, or sports. The bands will come in a small bag, with enough to last you awhile. The surgery part is optional though. You can get it if you want, but it will cost you. The only time it isn't optional is if your doctor is requiring you to do it. Hope this helps(:

    Only if it's needed to make space. I had four pulled out when I was twelve. The reason for it is because if you have a small like mouth and the teeth needed to be pulled aren't out, it'll cause your teeth to go forward slowly and you don't want that to happen. But that's if it's necessary, everyone's mouth is different. They will also extract the teeth from both sides of your mouth which means top and bottom.

    To answer your question, the way you wear your braces is quite simple. If it's your top jaw with the tooth sticking out, the orthodontists will put on braces on that part, and the bottom as well depends on who you go to. And wearing them, well look at brace pictures. With braces you don't put them on, and if it's necessary, they will give you bands. Hope that answers your question(;

    Ok this is how it works. Closing your under bite, over bite, or open bite requires braces. Over time you'll have those braces and they will straighten out your teeth in the correct position they were supposed to be in. Then when it's time, your orthodontist will give you rubber bands. The bands will permanently correct whatever is wrong. And on your braces on both sides of the mouth are three hooks. One of top, two on the bottom. Your doctor will teach you how to put them on.

      if your issue is skeletal and you’re over 17 or 18, it’s very likely surgery is the only option. if it’s dental, then there are other treatment options. it’s pretty cut and dry, because no treatments like braces or headgear etc work long term to treat an underlying skeletal issue, since this is a malformation of your bones rather than just misalignment of the teeth.

    Hi, I am not a dentist nor a dental student. I am just a normal person with an underbite and want to know how to fix my teeth. Growing up, I had a very aligned set of teeth. However, I did have severe case of sinusitis. In fact, I had two cases of sinusitis (maxillary and frontal sinusitis). One of them triggered silent sinus syndrome, which caused the collapse of my maxillary jaw. My sinuses are now healed, but now I have a protruding lower jaw and misalign teeth, which makes me look like having an underbite. Not only does it not look aesthetically pleasing, but it also sometimes triggered popping sound when I open my mouth too big. Not too mention, occasional headache and migraine, and difficulty in chewing due to misaligned teeth. I did go to a specialized doctor in dental surgeon and he suggested me having a corrective jaw surgery, which is costly and intrusive. Watching this video makes me wonder whether my case can also be solved with invisalign or braces. Does anybody have a suggestion what kind of treatment should I consider and which kind of dental specialist should I seek?

      @@zigsaw7161 I decided to go with invisalign treatment. The dentist removed 2 sets of my lower premolar, and I have been wearing the braces for 1.5 years. It is still in progress. As of now, my lower teeth is slowly sunken in (no more underbite). I still occasionally get the popping sound on my right TMJ when I open my mouth too big, but not as frequent as before. So far, no headache and migraine ever since my invisalign treatment. I still have a few set of braces left, but I think I need the second round because the gaps from the premolar removal have not completely closed.

    When one has a poorly formed bite, clearly the jaw is not working efficiently. This can lead to unnecessary wear and tear of your teeth. As you visit an orthodontist, he will most likely focus on correcting your facial structure to make you look great once again.
