It's brilliant in my opinion - a blend of the Royal Oak and Nautilus.
100% true...when I was wearing the aqua Ingenieur at the IWC Boutique I was amazed about the look & feel of the watch. Loved it....but it would be awesome if the bracelet of the aqua could be bought without the polished inserts (like the brushed bracelet of the black dial).
The watch is phenomenal and unique with the aqua leaf. She is worth every penny! I saw the watch at W&W 2023 and immediately went for it. Wearing it is always a feeling of happiness and you can feel this great watchmaking art on your wrist!
Always nice to see someone go out on a limb .... however, nothing I've seen about the watch screams that it's worth over $10k. The design isn't that stunning. The movement isn't that great. At a time when 90% of inflation is caused by greedflation - IWC went the wrong way on this one. This pricing made me like them less. As far as the Genta design? anyone can homage that for inspiration.
@@bdegrds True - but I've yet to see a watch in person that looked significantly better than it does in videos -- 99% of the time it's the reverse. They look less nice in person.
@@denniskai2331 This one looks better on the wrist. Feels great too. Nice balanced weight and I don't have to take any links off. Rare for a watch to not need adjustment. With the secondary market pushing it at low 9k, I think those are reasons enough to make it a great watch for someone.
@denniskai2331 Dennis, i tried this watch on over the weekend, it looks way way better in person. It even looked better on my wrist than in the showcase. I am not one to buy a watch for $12k but this shit looked marvelous. I'd buy it if it was $6k and that's a lot coming from a guy who has a $1k for a watch.
I tried this watch on a couple weeks ago. Its maybe 2k too much at best. Yes same movement as Mark 20, BUT finishing on ingeniur is done to a very very different level, that's what is most time consuming in watch manufacturing, and time is money. The bracelet is better than omega, chopard and better than jlc bracelets. UA-cam comments are filled with Walmart people, people who have never seen the watch, people that have no idea what fine details and finishing is and how difficult it is. In person the watch changed my mind on a few issues I had with it, and considering iwc had over 1 billion in sales last year, they are selling just fine
I only partially agree. The bracelet is great looking but a bit light, hollow. The case has good feel and weight, but unfortunately the finishing on the bezel and pusher looks cheap. This is the issue. If they had stepped their quality finishing up a notch, it would be one of the best choices in the market. It's still good but we will see how it holds up after the hype. I’m excited to hear this take, because I cannot see how it’s not grotesquely overpriced at the moment. Edit: The editing in this video is off the charts 👍
The retail price is $11,700. With that budget, and if you are willing to wait, you can purchase a Date Submariner or a GMT Master II. Also, you can purchase an Evolution 9 Grand Seiko. Personally, if I had that budget, I would rather purchase a Zenith Chronomaster Sport. You can also purchase an Omega NTTD Seamaster, but I also think that watch is overpriced. I am not going to say this IWC watch is overpriced, but if I had $11,700 to spend, would I buy it? Hell No.
Your not going to be able to get any of those Rolex's. The GS has an inferior bracelet compared to the ingeniur and the Zenith is inferior in finishing as well. Omega is a notch or 2 below IWC. You would know all these things if you were actually involved in the watch world and not just look at UA-cam videos
Yeah, but the IWC’s movement is notably inferior to every watch mentioned and isn’t even an in-house caliber. It uses a buggy ValFluerier movement with no stated accuracy ratings, even though that exact movement is COSC in Baume & Mercier watches costing less than half this price. So, y’know, we all have our priorities, preferences, and justifications for the arbitrary pricing of luxury goods. For me personally, there’s nothing about this new Ingeneiur that makes worth any more than the version from 2014 that had better dimensions, a more reliable movement, was more faithful to the Genta original, and cost less than half of what they’re asking now…
You can find them for 9.2k full set on Chrono24. Prices are going down. A little less than 9k would make it a great buy, IMO. I bet most saying just get a Mark XX is not actually getting a Mark XX. I have a GMT Master II and Sub...would still consider this watch as it's a totally different style with a different mission for me. But to your point, MSRP, would not be my first priority.
I recently tried on the Aqua dial. It certainly has its own thing going on. So light you’d think it’s made of titanium. Low profile. Nice head balance on wrist. Wears like silk and has the versatility and legibility to go with both casual and business clothing. Not a fan of non adjustable watches without carrying links. And AR coating on the outside is vulnerable to scratches. I’d say it is overpriced by 20% or thereabouts and full retail is a little eye watering for a simple steel three hander. Still, a very nicely executed and designed piece.
A lot of people call the Ingenieur the weakest of Genta's integrated watch designs when compared to the Nautilus and RO. For me though, this incarnation of it is amazing. I like that you can get a thoroughly contemporary, well-specced, Genta-designed integrated sports watch that doesn't come with the price tag or social baggage of a RO or an unobtainable Nautilus. There were some stinkers in the line's history for sure, however, they've nailed all the details in this one. It's number one on my list since trying it on. Love it.
The market determines what is over and under priced. The fact that these sell brand new in the secondary market for 10% below retail price means the watch is over priced. Say what you want but economics determine whether it is over or under priced, not emotions.
I own the Ingenieur aqua since early March. The price of $11,700 was worth it to me. I love it. The watch not the price. There is an issue with comfort. The push buttons are super sharp. It would be a huge improvement if they were rounded off more
I'm still undecided if it's worth it, but I've tried all the steel ones on and they're brilliant. The Aqua is my favorite. I'm normally not a polished center links guy, but it just works so well here. It doesn't feel too blingy. The comfort/size on my wrist is just perfect too. If you look at them on Chrono24, it seems the Aqua is either JUST below sticker new, or well OVER. Maybe the market is speaking on the pricing and saying it's worth it. I've not tried the titanium model, unfortunately. I hope they release others in the titanium line at some point though.
Exactly. This shows that the market sees it similar. Not worth the retail price. IWC should offer a lower priced version with a simpler dial etc for under 10k. Once it reaches 8k I am very tempted to get one…because I find this watch very nice.
I tried the watch on today, funnily enough in CH, the dial is absolutely gorgeous, the finish is lovely. Is it overpriced, well, is a Royal Oak (at retail) worth 2-3, or even 4-5 on the secondary market times as much?
Personally think it’s a bit overpriced. You could get a Baume et Mericer Rivera (particularly the translucent dials) with the same 5 day power reserve movement for ~$4k.
It’s an actual Gerald Genta designed watch, not a Genta inspired designed watch, where you don’t have play AD games, have a spend history to get one, then beg to be allocated one - seems like added value to me. I waited last year for it for just one month and now they are cheaper in the grey market. And now they are just add to cart in their website. I purchased it since I liked it and I don’t intend to sell it. Also Harrison mentioned it too, the only integrated watch competitor that fits better than an Ingenieur are Parmigiani Fleurier models. I tried on the VC Overseas multiple times- such a weird fit to me. AP was dainty and Nautilus was the ok of the three in terms of fit for me. You’re getting a Genta watch that is cheaper than Chopard and GP. The movement could be of debate, but other brands share movements as well.
Harrison, I really appreciate your reviews and generally gel with you on most of your assessments. However, I have to tell you that I'm not tracking with your justification for the price here. The Genta design is not even one of his most iconic. And while this dial is amazingly detailed and a beautiful color, it's not 10,500£beautiful. Stainless steel with a fairly routine movement (which, as you point out, you don't even see) - I just can't get behind IWC's pricing strategy here.
Man those visuals!!! 😍 absolutely crispy 👌🏽👊🏽 I actually really like the Ingenieur…..but prefer the ones with the brushed centre links. Best combo would be this aqua with brushed centre links strap. Further…controversial statement but I think the Laureato does it best. Yep…even better than the GG ones..
Beautiful watch worth the money. I may get heavily criticized for saying this, but what do you think about the price of a Royal Oak or Nautilus we have seen a billion times? PRX’s or Christopher Ward do not come close in terms of fit and finish and IWC pilot watches with the same movement retail for at least $5.000 to $6.000. So would the « right price » be $7.000, 8.000 or 9.000 ? Maybe, but this is not enough to consider it « grossly » overpriced.
Great review, and I love the scenery! I love this watch, the dial, color and structure, is fantastic. I agree with the butterfly clasp, not convenient. Over-priced? All Swiss watches are over-priced, mechanical watches are so much about perception. Objectively, it's a very high quality watch, 120 hours of power reserve, beautiful stainless steel, solid movement. I never really understood why so many people find it expensive. Compared to what? I love the Rolex Submariner too, but this watch is arguably of a finer quality. A close comparison IMHO is the GP Laureato. And that one is something like 3K more expensive than the Ingenieur, and nobody says the Laureato is too expensive. In fact the opposite, you often hear it is cheap vs the AP Royal Oak. Again, it's all perception.
We need more content like this. What we usually sees is how beautiful watch is under the neon/LED lights of controlled environment or small room, not much we would see someone wearing watches, especially if it's not tool watches, on real environment, outdoor, or test it as it should be. BTW, the colour between blue/green is called "Teal"
The color is called teal. I also heard petrol or forest green. It is a mix between blue and green and as such shouldn’t be either one. Love it so much.
The movement in ingenieur can be found in another much cheaper watch from Baume Mercier. When people pointed this out, instead of upgrading the movement of this watch apparently they are going to downgrade the movement in the Baume Mercier. Dodgy strategies like this are also taken by Panerai, Cartier and probably many more.
The movement is not the same, internet misinformation. Components are received by each manufacturer, then each manufacturer assembles, finishes and regulates the movements. BM is absolutely no where close to Iwc in this. They are not drop in movements like kids on the internet think. This practice is very very common in the industry.
@@bdegrds They're powered by the same movement, but the Ingenieur costs more than 3 times of the BM Baumatic. At least the Baumatic is COSC while the Ingenieur is not. Yes, this practice is common among many brands in the industry, which is exactly why people question what justifies the 3X price.
Great video as always. I personally think it's over priced but then again I'm not a fan of the Gerald Genta/ integrated bracelet fad. Doesn't Breitling do double voted A/R coating with a blue tinge?
I don’t know but I tried on the “aqua” or teal colour one today. It’s amazing in every way… but even my AD agrees they are priced too high. Thankfully I can get a generous discount, but he even questioned IWC on their pricing model. They couldn’t justify the price and only replied “that’s the price”.
I just got myself an Ingenieur AMG Chrono. 95% of the satisfaction for 1/6 of the price. It also has more of a Terminator look rather than the geriatric look of the latest one. I really wanted a Plastiki but to be fair I couldn't afford (justify?) it :D
Over-priced, over-sized for me, external crystal coatings, no fine bracelet adjustment and last of all I can't help seeing American flags all over the dial. I'm not American so that alone would have nixed it for me.
American flags? It's a cross-hatched checkerboard pattern...I can't see American flags at all, unless I imagine anything with stripes to look like an American flag.
I love the watch, but a 40mm integrated bracelet is just too big for me personally. But the biggest issue, especially at this price point, is the omission of any on the fly micro adjustment is just criminal in the eyes. If Christopher Ward can provide it on their new 12 model, then why can't IWC.
After taxes this watch comes in around $12,500 . With all the other competition out there offering tremendous value , no shot this is worth that price. I’m sure there are people paying that but let’s be honest this is a $7k-$8k value at best.
I would say this about Gerald Genta is without distracting from his work, if there was no genta wood we have watches like this? The answer isalmost certainly yes, if they were not exactly like this, they would be very similar . The bracelet on this is almost identical to the one on the Riviera. I’d love to know how much more the IWC cost. I will bet it’s about £10 per bracelet more .
Let’s all be honest - all watches are overpriced, and yet we buy them anyway! For me, no I wouldn’t pay what they’re asking - too many (what I think are) nicer watches I could get for the same money. But the blueish colour is stunning
People aren't asking IF its overpriced, they're asserting it & you dispute that, you are in a minority, its hilariously overpriced. Also turquoise is what you call blue/green ffs.
Your video comes in the most perfect time for me. Just got a white dial and the thought of it being overpriced kept bugging me (watching too many influencers i guess...). I totally agree with everything you said. I had an AP15500 and the IWC lug to lug feels much better on my 7 inch wrist.
The massive problem I have with the ingenieur is that , Richmond also own Baume and Mercier , who make the riviera, which originally came out in 1973, which is significantly cheaper, but appears to have the same movement..
Obviously it is not overpriced because it sells. Personally I think most luxury brands have promoted exclusivity simply by putting their prices up. A very successful marketing strategy but not one that particularly appeals to me.
Just because you say it’s overpriced doesn’t mean the other features aren’t 100% true. It’s just priced when the market was up. Drop this a few grand and there’ll be lines at all boutiques.
It’s not perfect, because it can only be purchased in one size. Imagine a shoe company only selling their products in size 7 (EU size 41) only 😳 What are they thinking? We all have different wrists. What looks great on you will look bad on me if my wrist size is different to yours. One of the great things about the Royal Oak is that it can be purchased in 5 different sizes from 33 mm to 41 mm. That I can’t afford any of these is a bit beyond the point. I agree that the Ingenieur is lovely, but for me personally it’s not interesting unless they introduce a 37-38 mm version. Greetings from Denmark
The color is turquoise. Problem is for 11-12k eur, i believe it's overpriced. You can buy an Evolution 9 GS, and if you save up 1 more k you can get your hands on the Tentagraph, which has a magnificent 36k bph chrono movement. This watch should have been 8-9k max.
I think this is a beautiful watch, but imo, it's the least compelling of Genta's integrated bracelet steel sports watch designs. The Royal Oak and Nautilus are so distinctive in their design language and have the weight of being from 2 of the Holy Trinity watch brands. I don't think I could justify shelling out nearly $12k for one despite it being a relative "bargain" compared to it's AP and Patek siblings. It's in a weird place where it's too expensive to compete with the copy-cat designs, but not "special" enough to compete with the more famous Genta designs.
IWC cannot be compared to Tissot or Christopher Ward… it’s a respected tool watch brand with a long history and boutique Swiss made niche brand. A bit like Glashütte in Germany. The Genta design reminds me of the Dieter Rams design based on simplicity and efficiency. 40mm and thin, great bracelet, and history… not bad for the price …
Dude it's way overpriced. You know it is. I don't why you put this video up. I don't care if it's from genta, it doesnt look like it's worth that much. Your audience agrees.
You have lost a great deal of credibility from this video. I'd rather have an equally good Baume & Mercier Riviera (from the same parent company) and $10,000 USD in my pocket, and so would 99% of other watch collectors. This video is a slap in the face to the watch community.
The real question is.. is it a sellita or eta movement... then it is overpriced, is it a in house??? Then maybe worth it! I would rather buy an old model
It’s a ValFleurier movement which is a movement manufacturer in the Richemont organization. So conventionally it would be considered an “in-house” movement but I feel that phrase gets thrown around too much. They aren’t making the movements at the watchmaking facility like Nomos, Glashutte Original, JLC, etc which I would consider in house manufacturing. Also, Baume et Mericer uses the same movement in couple of their models and the watches are priced around the $4k range.
Sorry, the price justification makes no sense. Gerald Genta didn’t design this watch. He designed a watch for IWC in 1976 that IWC’s current design team drew inspiration from and evolved. Which is exactly what IWC’s design team has done many times with the Ingenieur…this is just the first time they’ve had the gall to charge for the association. This would be no different than VW suddenly slapping an extra 10 grand on the price of every new Golf because they decided to evoke Giugiaro (a far more important designer than Genta in every measure) as the designer of the original model in 1974. Or, more directly, if Seiko added a few grand to the price of every Giugiaro-designed watch they reissue. But they don’t. Because that would be stupid. I do appreciate your Gucci reference, though, because it really lays it out plain: You’re not paying for the watch, you’re certainly not paying for the Richemont-sourced movement, and you’re certainly not paying for an original Genta design…you’re paying for the IWC logo on the dial…and to the extent someone puts any value on that logo is really the answer to “is this overpriced?”
Well, I know I’ll get a lot of flak for this, yet I own an extremely beautiful watch, build quality is way above average, finishing is impeccable, it is one of my most comfortable pieces to wear, case and strap conforms perfectly on my wrist, it has an amazing dial with patterns and colour that changes with every movement- and it looks exactly the same is this IWC- Only it is an Ix&Dao Engineer, with a PT5000 movement and it cost me 290 dollars. 🤷🏼♂️. One of my favourites in the collection, by far. It is a scratch magnet, because it is polished so well, so I already used a Cape Cod cloth on it once.
Really, it's not overpriced because of the who designed the original?!?!? So by that same logic Omega should charge a lot more for the Genta designed Constellation? The value proposition of a watch design is based on its constituent parts, level of finishing and supply & demand. The movement is the same as the B&M Riviera that has a saphire dial and open caseback for £3,600. I challenge you to point out what aspects of the Ingenieur justify a £7k uplift for a watch that offers no micro-adjustments on butterfly clasp, no quick change bracelet and a closed caseback! Leaving us with supply & demand, sure IWC don't make that many watches to begin with, but is that because they aren't as popular as other mid-tier luxury brands? The pricing has more to do with Richemont's pricing strategy amongst it's different brands rather than the real value of the watch, especially after they jacked up JLC prices by 45% in one fell swoop a year ago. But that's a topic for another discussion!
The comparison between an artist’s work and watches is a bit of a leap. Art pieces are made directly by the hand of the artist and can no longer be produced after his/her death. Often art pieces are unique and one of a kind. These watches, either by IWC, PP, and AP are mass produced and have never been directly made by the hand of Genta. They will be made in perpetuity and have no correlation to the life of the original designer. So to say that the high price of the new ingénieur is justified because Genta is no longer alive is preposterous.
To start with, your explanation of “is it overpriced” is absolutely awful, (sorry) yes the watch is worth more money than the baume&mercier Riviera ( it’s the same movement and spec) because the bracelet and the clasp is fantastic, so ok let’s be fair, very very fair, that takes it to being worth 5,500 -£6,000 tops. it’s horrendously overpriced. when it came to answering the hard-hitting question “ Gérald Genta they can charge whatever they want” IWC sales are down but for now profit is the same. it is an absolutely fantastic watch but it’s overpriced, wildly overpriced and the market for that watch is a very niche market.
I need to apologise for the wind here team. It was wild!! Hope you all enjoy ❤ If you want to get an IWC head to CH: www.chisholmhunter.co.uk

@@ocb05 if only...!
for me it is overpriced for this price i got an el primero 21 chrono.
Personally think it’s a bit overpriced. You could get a Baume et Mericer Rivera (particularly the translucent dials) with the same 5 day power reserve movement for ~$4k.
@juliuscepaesar5360 - you are 100% correct Sir!
But then you are left with a Baume et Mericer...
@@awdrpepper So what?
The movement could be of debate, but other brands share movements as well.
umm, oh yes it is!
😍 absolutely crispy 👌🏽👊🏽
I actually really like the Ingenieur…..but prefer the ones with the brushed centre links.
Yes it is. Shouldn't be more than 8K USD.
How much of a discount?
Nothing like a hike in nature to revive, enjoy simple things, with the new Ingenieur on your wrist and a bag of Charlie
please make a comparison video with the PRX
Great watch for 8k… for 12k, buy a Gp laureato
I love the watch, but a 40mm integrated bracelet is just too big for me personally. But the biggest issue, especially at this price point, is the omission of any on the fly micro adjustment is just criminal in the eyes. If Christopher Ward can provide it on their new 12 model, then why can't IWC.
They’re an AD for IWC. Do you expect them to say it’s overpriced?
After taxes this watch comes in around $12,500 . With all the other competition out there offering tremendous value , no shot this is worth that price. I’m sure there are people paying that but let’s be honest this is a $7k-$8k value at best.
Does it have a micro adjust?
I think you can talk to IWC and get a micro-adjust clasp instead of the butterfly.
Very stunning beautiful dress watch for me especially in this color that you present is just fantastic!!! 💪👏👍❤️❤️❤️
Breitling also do anti reflective with a blue look
The mental gymnastics used to justify the price 😅
Sticking to my casio....
This dial color is “Turquoise”which is a weird bluish green color that is!
The word is turquoise.
Total mistake, its insanely over priced! Freaking ridiculous 🙄
Total mistake because you cant afford it? Make sense😂
The massive problem I have with the ingenieur is that , Richmond also own Baume and Mercier , who make the riviera, which originally came out in 1973, which is significantly cheaper, but appears to have the same movement..
More videos showcasing Scottish landscapes. Try Loch Lomond.
Is something between green n blue I believe maybe call it petrol!!!maybe anyway who ”cares” is just adorable!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
The face screws of an AP, the strap of a Nautilus, the dial of Cristopher Ward, the markers of Rolex, and the mechanism of Timex.
It is.
But a fine watch non-the-less.
It's definitely more green than blue, but it's meant to between in between.
Obviously it is not overpriced because it sells. Personally I think most luxury brands have promoted exclusivity simply by putting their prices up. A very successful marketing strategy but not one that particularly appeals to me.
second market already selling at 80%
Exactly. And trending down.
Thanks for the wonderful video. Lovely watch, but I remain that it is overpriced for what it is.
Sick North Face jacket!! Cheers 🍻
Its 4000-5000 $ overpriced
It’s definitely over priced especially for that movement with the jumping second hand when you pull the crown out. It’s not even a chronometer.
I prefer the Chopard Alpine Eagle. Also, much more $, but VC Overseas blows this away.
This watch is overpriced af!
I am sorry, but here you are wrong. And the market agrees. Pre-owned prices dropping even with the limited supply (for no reason).
Here in the americas we have the color turquoise.
"you need to see it from the brand's point of view" - yep, charge as much as they think they can get away with and laugh all the way to the bank!
The movement is rubbish. It doesn't even change date at midnight. Instead you get a change over 2 hours.. My £3000 Tudor changes at midnight.....
Time and date only, should max be 65-80k.
Does this apply to the Rolex submariner too?
Why dont you buy it then?
As good looking as it is overpriced.
You have lost a great deal of credibility from this video. I'd rather have an equally good Baume & Mercier Riviera (from the same parent company) and $10,000 USD in my pocket, and so would 99% of other watch collectors. This video is a slap in the face to the watch community.
100% facts
IWC is overpriced as a brand.
Overpriced and totally mediocre.
It's looks verry beautyful, but def. over-priced.The colour, for me, is Petrol! Vg Vid.
What about the (slightly modified) ETA movement?
All luxuries are overpriced, go buy a casio if price is your concern. I ordered the titanium anyway.
Well, I know I’ll get a lot of flak for this, yet I own an extremely beautiful watch, build quality is way above average, finishing is impeccable, it is one of my most comfortable pieces to wear, case and strap conforms perfectly on my wrist, it has an amazing dial with patterns and colour that changes with every movement-
and it looks exactly the same is this IWC-
Only it is an Ix&Dao Engineer, with a PT5000 movement and it cost me 290 dollars. 🤷🏼♂️.
One of my favourites in the collection, by far.
It is a scratch magnet, because it is polished so well, so I already used a Cape Cod cloth on it once.
Omega constellation says otherwise!
… it’s teal. That’s the word you’re looking for
Really, it's not overpriced because of the who designed the original?!?!?
Overpriced, under-specced, Genta-milking flop. Doesn't even have free-sprung balance.
Would have been a modern day icon if it didn’t have crown guards. I would have paid $12,000 for it. A miss for me, IWC.
It’s not over-priced. It’s under-featured.
Jones Richard Gonzalez Timothy Hernandez Frank
To start with, your explanation of “is it overpriced” is absolutely awful, (sorry) yes the watch is worth more money than the baume&mercier Riviera ( it’s the same movement and spec) because the bracelet and the clasp is fantastic, so ok let’s be fair, very very fair, that takes it to being worth 5,500 -£6,000 tops. it’s horrendously overpriced. when it came to answering the hard-hitting question “ Gérald Genta they can charge whatever they want”
IWC sales are down but for now profit is the same. it is an absolutely fantastic watch but it’s overpriced, wildly overpriced and the market for that watch is a very niche market.
Ingenieur Chrono !
Needs a micro adjust on the bracelet.
