An Irish nationalist party that doesn't even recognize Northern Ireland's existence is in the position to nominate a first minister ...
I had to go back and hear this several times.
I remember writing a termpaper in university (about the historic roots of the NI conflict) that finished with the outlook that the Irish island could unite once the majority of Northern Ireland's population was in favor of that. (I'm from Germany and studied English.) It seemed a far off possibility then, though probably in my lifetime.
Now I see steps leading toward that and it feels ... overwhelming. I've never actually been to NI! I want to be able to say I've been there before it stops existing! I want to see the murals and the crazy parades and talk to the people "on the street". I want to see how NI is more than what I hear on the news. Do I need to book a flight?! No, sorry, of course not. But it really seems so historic and fast and strange - though I am highly in favour of it! And I don't mean that I want the Unionists to feel like even more of a minority than they already do (which I suspect will happen once the island is united); rather I see this as a danger to be addressed. But the separation of the island was - in my opinion and of course I think that it's the truth - forced, unnatural and arbitrary, and thus the unification seems like the most natural thing to me. (Did I mention I am from East Germany and love that we are a united country now? 😉)
In any case: Donna nobis pacem - and unity!
Book a flight to anywhere in Ireland ,there's going to be a massive party soon :D

Due to mass immigration in to northern Ireland the demographic of the people is changing
There's no doubt now that a majority of people in Northern Ireland support the Protocol (or at the very least, oppose the establishment of a customs border on the island of Ireland, which is the only real alternative to an Irish Sea customs border).
As for the border poll question - I don't think Sinn Fein will see any reason to rush it.
The demographic trends in Northern Ireland point in only one direction. The lower birth rates and higher emigration rates of Protestant/Loyalist communities have essentially baked them in for the next fifty years. The Unionist supermajority which NI was built on has now eroded completely. There's not even a bare plurality left.
Speaking as an Australian - it's hard to see what practical benefits remaining part of the UK would provide Northern Ireland. Whatever those benefits are, I don't see them becoming more compelling in the next twenty years.
If the Unionists were smart, they'd push for a quick border poll (which they would probably win if it were held in the next five years) - and then use that as a stick to delay the inevitable. However, nothing about Unionist politics in the last decade has been intelligent.
I only hope that the transition, however long it takes, is as peaceful as it can be.
I mean the DUP cunning plan to use brexit to improve the unionist cause alone makes me dread their next cunning plan. Maybe they'll come up with something equally genius and hurry thing along so Sinn Féin can just sit back and wait.
Benefit of remaining in the UK ? About 65% of the GDP of the Province is subs from GB. Doubt Ireland would want to pick up the tab.
@@jebgue3 A fair point that many people are making. However, I think they overlook the magnitude of the aid that would come from the EU. This aid was the only thing that enabled East Germany to join West Germany.

I'm not an expert on valuing intergovernmental transfers in the UK. What I will say though is I don't think Northern Ireland would immediately transform into the economic equivalent of Bulgaria if it left the UK. That's what a 65% figure annual subsidy figure would imply and it doesn't sound realistic. As a matter of fact, it sounds so unrealistic that it strains credibility.
But there is a broader point to be made here. If Northern Ireland has become such an enormous mendicant province, what the hell does that say about the quality of governance that they have been receiving from the UK over the past century?
Not every regional wealth disparity is a policy failure - but one that large left to fester for so long can't be explained as anything but a staggering failure of national leadership. It would almost imply that the national government is deliberately neglecting that part of their country and leaving it to rot.
Preventing free trade exports from mainland GB into NI is too hardline and intransigent.

Fascinating of how some nationalism is covered in a positive light whereas others are not - Ukraine / Irish/ SNP vs. Orban / Trump / Brexit 🤔
Isn't it possible that some nationalism ,is just darker than others?

Because Celtic nationalism isn't rooted in white supremacy and eugenics. It's is born from the perspective of therighteous oppressed, not the bitter opressor...Germanic nationalism by comparison (3rd reich, anglo-Saxon, Frankish), is very much the opressor asserting the supremacy of their race over all others. The polls for a United Ireland haven't changed in literally decades.. SF/IRA got the majority of seats but Nationalism as a whole just lost seats.. The Alliance Party has about an 80% Unionist voter base.. That's why the ONLY place SF/IRA publicly campaigned for a United Ireland during this election was in New York.. NOT Anywhere in Northern Ireland.. They didn't want to wind up Unionists.. lol.. Yet since the election apparently they have a majority for a Border Poll and the protocol.. lmao.. Devious as they come.. Especially since SF/IRA, along with the SDLP & The Alliance Party "ALL" said to Northern Ireland voters during the election debates that this election WOULDN'T effect the protocol or a Border Poll.. The Lies Coming Out Of These Muppets Is Hilarious.

The leaders or Sein Fein should be in jail for authorising the bombings which lead to hundreds of Civilian casualties.
Then the Queen should be in jail for being in the exact same position (i.e commander in chief)

@@pooboi8600 should we start with Ian Paisley for example, though he is dead, he was involved in violence during the troubles and he was leader of the dup. The dup are just as guilty as sinn Fein when it came to the troubles.
DUP, TUV, UUP only had protocol as their policies. The PEOPLE and SINN FÉIN are concerned about bread and butter issues!
@Ainsley Govan It seems to be both. The only people bleating on about unity in these recent elections were the DUP...
Basically a big crack has appeared in the dam.
There is time, but theres no fixing it. No rewind.
Think its great news give Northern Ireland back we save 30 billion a year 👏
What is happening to the UK? Sinn Fein wins in Northern Ireland and the SNP party in Scotland advocating independence for Scotland take the lead in elections. How did it come to this?
The future of Ireland should be decided by all the people on the island. The border in Ireland is a British border. It has been a disaster from the beginning.
We want peace and unity.
So let's conveniently forget the vicious slaughter of innocent protestants.
I mean if they leave the uk we’d save a lot off money lol.
The Irish need to move toward unification.
@@maxdavis7722 Ireland exercises no claim over Northern Ireland.
However, partition is artificial and has never worked anywhere it has been tried. In Northern Ireland's case, it is a physical expression of social, cultural, sectarian and economic divisions within Northern Ireland. These divisions need to be removed in order for there to be unity within Northern Ireland. NI is contested territory because of its colonial experience. As these divisions wain, unity with the south will quite naturally come about leading to the creation of a new state.
@@maxdavis7722 The border was only ever meant to be temporary when it was brought in. It was intended that unionists and nationalists would work our their differences and unite, but the Unionists had no intention of doing so.
The border itself is not natural.
@@taintabird23 what kind of reason is that? It doesn’t matter if that was its original purpose and it certainly doesn’t mean that Ireland should naturally unite. Temporary border or not a more clearly defined border could be established or the border could be removed but there is no reason to think that Ireland should “naturally” unite.
Considering the borders of Northern Ireland were drawn to prevent a Nationalist majority, this is significant
@justin great day for the alliance party, because of the GFA they will sadly never be a party in government
There’s not a nationalist majority - Sinn Fein are just the biggest single party. Unionist votes are just split between 4 parties.
@@jamessteel9016 the GFA can be modified, a neutral party wasnt expected ever before
Anything from 40% and over is nearly half a country, so that's nearly half of NI that voted to leave the EU union. And those that voted to remain in the EU wont all want to leave the UK.
So good luck.
