Alas my love you do me wrong
To cast me off discourteously;
And I have loved you oh so long
Delighting in your company.
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves my heart of gold
Greensleeves was my heart of joy
And who but my Lady Greensleeves.
I have been ready at your hand
To grant whatever thou would'st crave;
I have waged both life and land
Your love and goodwill for to have.
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
Greensleeves was my heart of joy
And who but my Lady Greensleeves.
Thy petticoat of sendle white
With gold embroidered gorgeously;
Thy petticoat of silk and white
And these I bought thee gladly.
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves my heart of gold
Greensleeves was my heart of joy
And who but my Lady Greensleeves.
My mother passed away suddenly this past August four days before her 56th wedding anniversary. She had such a beautiful singing voice and used to sing this as a lullaby to myself and my younger brother and sister. I remember her with a smile to this song and recently played it for my father, who immediately teared up. I went to stop the music and he asked me not to. He said it was like a message from Mum and a great comfort to him. God bless the mourners 💔
❣
Sorry for your loss, it is a beautiful song to remember your Mom by!
That is simply beautiful. Thank you for sharing your memory. ❤
I am so very sorry for your loss. 💙hugs💙
@@mysticalmargaret6105 Thank you. I miss her every day ❤️
Anything that Loreena Mckennit makes is pure magic ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I fell in love with this song and Loreena McKennit in 1997 when I randomly heard her in a shop for musical instruments. And I never fell out of this love. Meanwhile, I have listened to many versions of this song, but hers and the duet of Tim Foust and Peter Holland are my favorite ones.
I remember this song from a CD of her songs back in the late 90s. It included "All Soul's Night", "The Lady of Shalott", and "Cymbeline."
This was my dad's favorite version of the song (besides my mom singing it to him) and since he passed recently the song always makes me sad but still reminds me of him and the good times I had with him.

The most saddest love-song i have ever heard... But: the song is great.
Absolutely a beautiful song. Well written and sung.
Heard this for the first time in 7th grade music class and thought it was the most beautiful song I had ever heard. Thanks Loreena for doing such a marvelous job!
My grandfather used to play this on his piano when I was young. It was one of the first thing I ever learned when I started to play the piano. It is the most beautiful song I ever heard, when I feel depressed or anything I listen to it.
With Loreena McKennitts singing this song gets eternal
Thanks for singing one of the most beautiful songs ever written, in such a lovely way.
Me encanta ésta canción!.
What an angelique voice. I like her "Mummer Dance", but this one sounds like from heaven
Loreena´s is one of the best covers ever of this classic and eternal song, thank you so much for sharing this!
Haunting and beautiful.
The voice of the Goddess here on earth. No one compares or even comes close to the ethereal majesty of Loreena McKennitt

Such a beautiful piece.
This touches my soul.
This overwhelming masterpiece is a treasure for Earthlings💮🏵️🌸🎑👘🎎
Her marvellous voice is a gift to everybody! The Best version, in my modest opnion, of a great celtic song! Open your Hearts and enjoy!!!
Simply beatiful and awesome.
Outstanding , amazing , astrofysical !
I can imagine Henry down on his knees singing this to Anne. So very haunting. I can also hear Anne singing this while she sits looking out the window of her prison in the Tower waiting for death and wanting death as Henry betrayed her. He broke her heart.
Sadly, that's what humans do. Break each other's hearts 😢😢

Az csak legenda, miszerint VIII. Henrik írta volna a dalt.
Would anyone actually trust Henry, who had already cruelly betrayed his first wife and had multiple mistresses?
@@dianayu6162 Nah well I mean, having mistresses was a common thing sadly, was even an honor for you daughter to be the king's mistress e.g. But dang, Henry took it one step further with changing the church to marry a new wife xD
@@nelumvia As an Anglican I'm glad he broke from the Church of Rome.
I notice many Italian posts- Loreena must be popular in Italy !!!
Celts have been in Italy also, expecially North, something of their magig remained in the air like a nostalgic echoe
I feel this beautiful singer's voice is poplar everywhere.
She has a house in Tuscany, and does free concerts there for the locals. I missed one by just a few weeks and deeply regret it.

amazing !!! just amazing
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing.
My great great uncle’s third cousin twice removed’s next door neighbor’s cat sitter’s 4th husband loved this song. He hasn’t passed away yet, nor does this song remind me of him. But I still love this song, too. I mean, independently.
Beautiful!
This song has a terrific loud haunting unique sound in many places that makes it stand out from other versions. But one of the things that attracted me to this video is that it actually shows a girl with greensleeves.

Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod was merely 18 years of age when Anne Boleyn was sadly decapitated.
Brave and honourable son of Glenfinnan, Scotland "Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod" RIP 1518-2000.
It was supposed to have been written by Henry for Anne Boleyn. But if he said he wrote it who would argue with him.? I've heard it was originally a french song, but who really knows ?
Connor MacLeod and his inmortal love to Heather.
Wonderfullll....
Great!!!!
Beautiful song made even more beautiful by a gifted Song Bird.
Que canción mas hermosa
My Mom loved Greensleeves and had a music songwriting book with the penciled in notes for guitar. She never really mentioned she played.
Epic!!!😁👍
Her voice is so haunting.

She would make a perfect partner with "Connor MacLeod" of the Clan MacLeod.
sem palavras muito bacana Loreena Mckennitt the valeu

Beautiful Anglo Saxon song 🏴
Loreena's version is the best ......
No doubt.
I think the album cover says that they were playing around during a break on a recording session and took turns to sing various songs how Leonard Cohen(?) might sing them. Loreena McKennitt sang Greensleeves as he might sing it. It was so good that they put it on the album.
JMB JMB It‘s like Tom Waits would do it, not like Leonard Cohen. If you know this you can hear what they mean.
muy bello

It's been 2 years, did you learn it?
Perhaps Greensleeves was written by King Henry VIII, (for there is mention this immortal song has Irish origins), but there is no doubt he certainly sang it and meant it in his madness for the Lady Anne Boleyn. To hear such a deeply sensitive rendition by our ethereal muse Loreena, is to hear the unbearable and haunting pain of unrequited love. King Henry's sexual prowess was legendary as was his charm, striking looks (before he acquired syphilis), and towering passion whether in love or rage. To have such a powerful king on his knees for a lady-in- waiting to his queen in a glittering court of silks, gold, and intrigue is beyond the mere humiliation of thwarted desire. It is drama and passion played out to the highest degree. And Loreena captured the hallowed breath of it.
Why don't you do some research and find out if you're so genuinely interested? It's not Irish and it has nothing whatsoever to do with Henry ... who was butt ugly by the way. You could research that as well. Tudorian photoshop.
Twattn't too bad a song writer that king, eh?
I did do some research (as I should have done in the first place, and not rely on unsubstantiated websites) So, according to Wikipedia, Greensleeves seems to have had Spanish (Andulasian origins), and I definitely stand corrected. It says Greensleeves probably didn't reach the English court until after Henry's death in the Elizabethan age. Even as I have read on some sites this song had Irish origins, and for all the romance of Henry singing this haunting tune to his ladylove, these historical venues seem quite false, and I appreciate you making dig deeper for the truth.I can now believe this idea of Henry and Greensleeves was created out of the legends of his court and, of course, one of the passionate, most visible love affairs of all time. And as we know, our human desire for love's ardor will have us believe almost anything, and have great literature and song come of it.Henry was not butt ugly in his youth, but quite dashing and extremely charismatic as the records prove-written, painted, and otherwise. The highly honored historian Simon Schama, (who spent much of his life obsessing over this infamous king), referred to Henry in his BBC Biography on the King and his eight wives-(check it out on UA-cam here), "the 18 year old...was a slim, beautiful, elegant, musical, poetical, reasonable, charming, sweet-tempered young man who married for love. How does he turn into the Henry who is the horror, the Henry who is the tyrant, who, in short, was Henry." Time, intrigue, power, corruption, and 15th C. medicine did their work on Henry, and most definitely turned Henry into a mentally and physically wounded butt ugly megalomaniac. But they was a time-as with all of us-when he was beautiful in face and spirit.
Good lord, aren't you a pompous douche..."yes waiter, Ill have a glass of get the F@@k over myself". Guess who's got a game of thrones screensaver.
Waterhorse Green it does sound Irish to me.
♡
😍😍😍😍😍
magnifica
This song was originally written by Henry 8th of England for his second wife Anne Boleyn who was later executed for treason and incest but the real reason was because she never produced a male heir for the king. After Anne’s execution, every trace of her existence was removed- only this song and her portrait remain of her. King Henry went on to marry another 4 times after Anne.

Wonderful song. But Celtic Ladies performs closer to that time, right?

Alas my love you do me wrong
To cast me off discourteously;
And I have loved you oh so long
Delighting in your company.
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
Greensleeves was my heart of joy
And who but my Lady Greensleeves.
I have been ready at your hand
To grant whatever thou would'st crave;
I have waged both life and land
Your love and goodwill for to have.
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
Greensleeves was my heart of joy
And who but my Lady Greensleeves.
Thy petticoat of sendle white
With gold embroidered gorgeously;
Thy petticoat of silk and white
And these I bought thee gladly.
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
Greensleeves was my heart of joy
And who but my Lady Greensleeves.
Original:
Alas, my love, you do me wrong,
To cast me off discourteously.
For I have loved you well and long,
Delighting in your company.
Chorus:
Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady greensleeves.
Your vows you’ve broken, like my heart,
Oh, why did you so enrapture me?
Now I remain in a world apart
But my heart remains in captivity.
Chorus
I have been ready at your hand,
To grant whatever you would crave,
I have both wagered life and land,
Your love and good-will for to have.
Chorus
If you intend thus to disdain,
It does the more enrapture me,
And even so, I still remain
A lover in captivity.
Chorus
My men were clothed all in green,
And they did ever wait on thee;
All this was gallant to be seen,
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
Chorus
Thou couldst desire no earthly thing,
but still thou hadst it readily.
Thy music still to play and sing;
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
Chorus
Well, I will pray to God on high,
that thou my constancy mayst see,
And that yet once before I die,
Thou wilt vouchsafe to love me.
Chorus
Ah, Greensleeves, now farewell, adieu,
To God I pray to prosper thee,
For I am still thy lover true,
Come once again and love me.
