    Fantastic review, Lloyd. I’m fan of Brooks Road Running shoes (Adrenaline’s) but I didn’t find good Brooks options for my trail runs in the past. Seems that these updated Cascadia 16 are something serious to think about. Thank you!

    Great review Lloyd. Appreciate the time and effort you put in to all of them. I bought the Cascadia 16s a couple of days before the RAT in August and they were great. Usually will get a wide 2E shoe but just got a 1/2 size bigger in normal width and the toebox is perfect for me. Took a little bit of fiddling to get the lacing right - I found that using the lower holes on the last eyelets really helped. They seem pretty bombproof but surprisingly feel light and responsive which is a great combo. Good work mate 👌

      yeah they have a wider toebox, but if you have wide feet (like me), you can also get these in 2E width (in the grey version). thats what I went for, and they are extreemely comfortable ! I bought both the D width and 2E width, and then decided to return the D width.

    Thanks for the review. I've been growing frustrated, trying to find an Altra alternative. I have the lone peaks but they are not cushiony enough and the Olympus doesn't work for me. It hurts my feet.
    I just ordered some of these cascadias and hopefully they are wide enough for me. Thanks for putting together the video

      No problem Tim 👍
      The Cascadia is a wide shoe, maybe not as wide as an Altra but it's got good space and volume in the toe. Hope the shoes work out for you and thanks for watching the channel 🙏😊

    The best review Loyd!!! I borrow cascadia 16 from a friend and I had the same problem. It was a great shoe but not for my foot shape (I've narrow foot). It was impossible to control them in technical steep downhills because my foot was sliding insight the shoe. Solution: buy women's version. It is narrower, 15g lighter and my foot is not moving. You should try it!

      Thanks Stanley, really glad you enjoyed it. The two shoes actually have a lot in common. The biggest difference between them would be the Topo has a bit more width in the toe box and a little bit less heel off set. Apart from that they run quite similar. Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's appreciated 🙏😊

    I just bought a 2nd pair of these Gore Tex Cascadia16's....I have been beating snot out of my 1st pair and they are well built. I figure they will eventually wear out and I want to have a spare pair when that happens. I use mine on fire roads, railroad tracks, light trails & hills. They work really well at that. I would hike mountains in them if it was all I had and I’m sure they would be capable of that. ….but (I prefer a hiking boot for that activity). The Gore tex version of the cascadia 16 is my go -to winter running shoe, good grip on icy roads and my feet stay warm and dry. I really like the DNA loft 2 cushioning. It makes the shoe feel responsive. My New Balance Hierro V6 fresh foams feel too spongy on the trails. Different shoes for different terrain and purposes. Its nice to have choices. I will still give the Cascadia 16’s 5 stars overall for an affordable, rugged, capable, package.

    Awesome review mate. I was checking these out today at a local race event. I have a wider foot and the 15s fit like a glove but I found them a bit heavy so never bought them. With the 8mm drop do you notice the high heel? I recently got a Merrells shoe with a 10mm drop. Felt good in store but on the trails they are dicey running downhills at speed and now I’m hesitate to consider bigger drops but I really like where brooks shoes are going. got a big event I’m training for in October and considering a new shoe. Currently I run in saucony tr mad rivers (still I know) which are near death. Unfortunately the xodus ultras my pinky is hard up on the side of the shoe otherwise it would have be a no brainer

    Good luck coming back from injury!! I was so looking forward to the 16. Tried them on yesterday and they are just too wide. Booooo!! The 15 wasn't at all but that shoe wasn't thrilling. Back to La Sportiva Mutant a great supportive shoe for narrowish feet and various terrains.

      Thanks Jeff, it's great to be back and long may it continue 😊
      The Cascadia 16 is a wide fitting shoe that's for sure. If you've got narrow feet it doesn't really work depending on how technical the trails are you run obviously. The Mutant is a good winter shoe, especially if you are quite narrow. I've never really got on with it, it feels a bit to firm for me underfoot and a bit to stiff in the midsole 🤔

    I run throughout the winter months when there is ice and snow on the road surface. Do you think this shoe would give me a much better grip than a normal running shoe? Would the sole breakdown fast if running on concrete/tarmac surfaces? Thank you.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  3 роки тому

      It's a grippy trail shoe Ken but I'm not sure many shoes can grip icey roads unless they've got spikes in the outsole. Having never run the shoe in snow or on ice it's impossible for me to say how the grip would perform. Also the lugs would wear down a lot quicker if you were just running on tarmac and concrete 👍

    Updated to the 16 from the 15 a couple of months back. Much prefer the 15 if I’m honest. Pivot posts in the 15 make a difference (for me), too much foot movement in the 16 and I cannot keep them tight on my foot at all. A step backwards in my opinion. Hope the 17 version is better. On a positive though they are softer which I quite like but that’s about it.

    • @robertmorano2372
      @robertmorano2372 3 роки тому +1

      I only tried these on in my local store and ran around in them in store. So I can't really talk about what they are like after a few miles or even once you get them out in the woods. I do own the peregrine 10 and have quite a few miles on them. For me, they are very different shoes. The cascadia is directed more at running along on smooth trails, rolling hills, etc. Whereas the pergerine (and again, for me) is very good at quick, grippy attack style runs through whatever you can throw at them, mud, rocks, roots, water, snow, loose terrain, but are not my first choice for the buffed out, rolling hills types of trail runs. I ended up buying altra timps (which, I absolutely love, but come with their own set of issues.) I wanted to add a zero drop, wider shoe to my trail rotation and needed something to replace the road to trail spot). I have somewhat of a normal food and run in all kinds of hokas, saucony, skechers, etc, but I will say that (again, for me) the fit of the cascadia was not wide and quite uncomfortable, I know it's very subjective, but the shoe felt very boxy, clunky, almost work boot like. I do love a nice durable trail shoe that breaks in and "loosens up" nicely, so hopefully that is the case here, but it was enough to put them right back in the box in the store.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  3 роки тому

      Thanks John, glad you enjoyed the video. Its a good improvement but I'd still pick the Peregrine before the Cascadia 16. The Peregrine fits my foot shape better so I feel a lot more connected to the upper and a lot more stable on technical trails 👍

    Beautiful review as always Loyd, my opinion is incredibly similar to yours, the width of the forefoot does not allow me to feel confident in the technical areas, as much as i can tighten the laces. I would like to see it thinner, with a drop of 6 mm and vibram megagrip. Then it would be the perfect all-round shoe. For now I have found a similar set in the Scarpa Rapid (it's a run/fast hiking shoe i Know but try to belive) and in 10 years I tried a lot of shoes

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  3 роки тому +1

      It's definitely a wide fitting shoe Marco. I didn't really have any issues with the heel off set but I do like a 4mm or 6mm off set on my trail shoes. A trail shoe would always be better with Vibram Megagrip on the outsole that's for sure Marco 😉

    Hey Lloyd,
    Have you had a chance to run in the Brooks Catamount as a comparison? They are lighter and look pretty good from the reviews I have seen. My favorite trail shoe has been the Evo Speedgoat. Much lighter, wider and less rigid upper than SG4. I cant find them anywhere as old now and no stock. And not sure if a new version is ever coming, or whether Hoka just replaced it with Mafate collection. I have the Mafate 2 and they are nowhere near as nice as the Evo Speedgoat. Heavier, more rigid feeling outsole and does not have the rocker shape.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  3 роки тому +1

      No I haven't run in the Catamount but it's a much lighter and more nimble shoe than the Cascadia. Unfortunately it doesn't have much lug on the outsole so it's not much good this time of the year in the UK. A lot of runners loved the Evo Speedgoat, unfortunately Hoka have stopped making it so they are hard to find nowadays 🤔
      It's funny that people say it was wider because the Evo wasn't actually wider it just used a different fabric on the upper. The Speedgoat 5 should be along soon hopefully, December time if it's not delayed? Apparently its a combination of the Speedgoat 4 and the Evo so I've got my fingers crossed it runs more like the Speedgoat 3's 🤞🤞🤞🤞
      Hope this helps Joel and thanks for watching the channel it's appreciated 🙏

    Nice review mate could only get two colours & only the grey in wide? Feels a bit boxy to me and still a bit heavy but still a good shoe doesn’t do anything wrong or exciting the Toyota Camry of trail shoes 😂will use it as a recovery shoe or day hikes the Catamounts probably more responsive and more suited for me! Unfortunately all the manufacturers tend to pick one colour for the width fit option. It definitely has a daily trainer feel about it, solid and dependable! Catamount is quite a bit more responsive than the Cascadia that's for sure 👍

    I just took this shoe (women's version) to the moderately muddy trail in Seven Sisters (UK) and was not impressed at all. While it was not slipping or sliding either on uphill, downhill or flat parts, it was not shedding (wet) mud. At all. And I wasn't even running (was hiking). I specifically watched soles of other hikers' shoes (there were lots of people on the trail in all kids of shoes). Yes, everyone had wet mud on their soles, but not to the extent my Brooks had. The mud was sticking out from below the sides and the backs of each shoe. While shoes remained grippy (not sure how they managed that considering the soles looked like two big mud cakes, with no lugs visible), that mud added so much extra weight to my feet! :( When mud had dried, the soles did shed it quite well. Also breathability is very questionable :( I specifically bought them because they were non-Gortex (so supposedly more breathable), but within 4 hours of hiking not in hot weather (c. +17C) my (merino wool) socks were wet with sweat. I did the same trail last year in goretex Salomon XUltra 3's in +22C, in the sun, with much heavier backpack and after 8 hours my socks were still completely dry.

      @@Run4Adventure That’s an interesting comment you make about the Mazama’s. I had a pair of Mazama 1 which I took to 407 miles before my 5th toe appeared through the upper!
      Most of those miles were parkrun between about March-November while conditions were dry, although I never felt they would ever lose grip in the wet. From a fit perspective, the Mazama was far superior to the Pure Grit 7 that replaced them. The Burrito tongue on the PG7 never felt right to me, so I’m looking forward to trying the Catamounts that everyone seems to rave about!

    In comparison to the saucony peregrines, hoka speed goats, altra lone peaks, the cascadias are built to last far far longer, these brooks will take a beating and keep performing.

I actually think if you have to use the runners knot then you're in the wrong shoe because it doesn't fit your foot shape right 👍
      When ever I've had to use the runners knot it's just caused damage to the top of the foot because the laces are to locked down. That's one thing I've learnt over all the years I've been running is that what works for one won't work for another! 😊
