I had a dummy shaft made to hold the roller bearing in and that was driven out as you drive the proper shaft in place it makes it quick and easy to install the cluster gear in the gearbox
I admire your patience. I would be screaming and crying. Very educational. I once had a 55chevy 2 door sedan and I put a Muncie close-ratio 4 speed in it. It had been rebuilt and it worked perfect. I got it for $50 from a guy who said he took it out of his son's Camero in order to stop him from drag racing . I was happy
You know.. I was havn a bad day till I got to see you struggle... haha Now we got laughter Thanks dude and dude!!! Love ur channel!!
As a kid we had a bassett hound that used it's nose as a dirt bulldozer too, LOL! We once watched it behind the barn trying to bury a chicken that done got stiff from rigor with one wing stuck up in the air. It'd get the body covered and that wing would stick up, then when it tried covering the wing, patting the dirt down with it's ears darned if the body wouldn't come riding back up again from under the dirt. The dog was less than pleased to say the least as it would bark at that dead bird and start all over again. I wish the transmission on my little Ranger would come out that easy. Back about 3 years ago the slave cylinder on it went bad and on those Rangers the slave cylinder is inside of the bell housing. So since I had to remove the transmission anyhow I went ahead and changed everything I could think of while I had it off. Clutch, master cylinder, slave cylinder, flywheel and rear main seal. Hopefully it'll be good for another 23 years now, lol.
Nice job on the rebuild of the Muncie! Looking forward to the new shop build!
You are the hardest working man on UA-cam. Dude still has lots life left in her. Thanks for such great content!
LOVE miss Daisy!! I know it's not the same but when I used to rebuild the 3 speed tranny in my 59 ford several times (trying to speed shift drag racing) I always used rubber bands to hold the sincro gear pads in place. First drive and they were chewed up and out of the way. Another good video.
Back in the day.took many auto and manuals in an out on the ground.but never tore one apart. U know ur stuff.
Ole dude is a nice ole truck! And runs great!
You're like a Timex you "can take the liken but you keep on thicken " 😂 i enjoy seeing you and good luck with with your shop , take care buddy ooh'rah Semper Fi. Ooh rah !!! 🎉
Hey Chad,
I found this grease for holding needle bearings. It's sticky grease. It is some great stuff. Give it a try. You will be amazed.
It's been a long time since I've rebuilt one.thank you for refresher course...😀
Dude's coming right along. Sure is a cool old truck. Nice work This N That!
I found you through barn finds and really liking this channel! Anything to do with getting vehicles running is cool. Similar to Vice Grip Garage 👍
very well rebuilding the gearbox and like you patience! very good
😃 my down time real enjoy watching chilled out son o a gun!
I just pulled my optispark for the 3rd time so I completely understand about doing the same job over. It's ain't easy getting good parts anymore.
one of my first early hot rods had a Munch 4 speed back in 1969 when I got out of bracket racing I sold over 40 of them to a racer in Huntsville Alabama later he bought my front engine econo rail with a big block stroked Ford with a power glide
Such a highly educational video. You did a fantastic jobs as always. I was very happy so see that all that tedious work paid off. (Probably not as happy as you though lol)
Tell miss Daisy hello
From northern California
Great job friend, love the videos, hope all is good!
I take my hat off to you. Gearboxes are a dark art and I wouldn’t have the patience. Great channel; cheers from the UK 🇬🇧
So happy that Dude is back on the road again!!!!
16 Minutes!!!! Baddazze!!! Some kind of world record!! haha
I am amateur so take my comment as assumption, BUT I think what this gearbox lost was synchro springs, which mean the lock 18:20 was loose and in gear clash lock was not engaging, making synchronizers work overtime all the time, probably syncing gears 2 & 3 always and forever.
it would make sense as missing sync spring make sure that your lock is always in correct position, and when you speed up, it's pushed out by acceleration/centrifugal force.
4'th don't do it as it's already spinning fast enough that lock is in correct position all the time.
Love the old truck
What a very nice truck it get up and go it's got power
All I can say is better you than me lol
I wouldn't touch that job with a 10 foot pole
but it was fun watching you do it lol
Hey partner just wanted to drop a line or two comments help sorry that there are some idiots in this world that failed to understand a man's home it's his private space anyway glad you guys are safe thanks for the great content your friend and biggest fan North Georgia Mike 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇸🇺🇸
Nice job Chad surprising what can be achieved with a bit of patience sounds great ,I'd like to see him with a bigger steering wheel to be honest I think these old trucks with big deep steering wheels look great but that's me .look forward to the next video keep up the good work .👍
Makes me wonder whats thicker than grease that would help prevent the bearing gremlins from escaping
For sure the countershaft bearings are the time consuming nightmare.
The saying at my shop is we do it right cause we do it twice 😂😂😂
oil leak is probably from play in the trust bearing making the rear seal leak
I will send you my vw split window bus trans and you can rebuild that. Your muncie is pretty straight forward. A vw transaxle will make you invent new cuss words lol
Never underestimate the effects of slop.
The 2nd time is the charm. That Muncie performed like brand new one from the shop. If I may ask a question, you are saying that Dude needs an overhaul, not saying I know everything, but I don't think Dude needs it, it don't smoke, knock or fail to start up, just some oil leaks. From what I see and hear sounds really, you know more about your truck than anyone, I'm not trying to be something I'm not. And did you say back awhile that you might be interested in some good condition I might be able to help you out, if you stumble over a 283 or a good 350, if their rebuildable and not to expensive I might be able to take one of hands
Very interesting! 2 things i wont fool with, tranny's and diff's. I praise ur ability. I have enuff trouble rememberin where my glasses are much less what gear/plate etc goes where lol!!
Love the channel awesome videos always a fan
Enjoyable and educational ! thank you
A job well done
hello friend, today with your video I learned a very important lesson: never touch my truck. greetings from Argentina
Hello Argentina! 👍

I've seen all of your videos, literally all of them, and I love them.
ps i love ford
Dont ya love doing a job two times but like they say practice makes perfect lol
the dog 😍
Hey I was wondering if you knew anything about the spark plugs on boat motors that don't have a gap I think they are called surface gap plugs I'm just trying to figure out how they work thanks
Spark jumps to the side.
You need to work on that old chevy suburban/ carry all I seen in one of your parts getting videos.
Congrats on the tranny! Reassembly with old and used parts and install and test of the 390 would be nice! Ron PTL USA
You can always show us footage of you building yer shop then you won't have to worry about it effecting the videos👍
well pal you did it again superb i have just watched ole puddin and in a 1 hour vid he worked for 15 minutes on trash you do a vid and its full of entertainment o and if i order some of your merchandise do you do over seas orders i am more than willing to pay the extra costs incurred sorry to england keep up the sterling wok
I don't handle my merch but I'm pretty they ship worldwide.
Good
Had a "friend" rip me off on a junk m20. Sold it at $100 loss. Going t56
I am a bit of a noob to this kind of stuff. Do output shaft seals just slide out? I have a seal puller I have used on front engine seals on an old volvo.
Anyhow I'm going to be doing the U joints on my 70 swinger 225 3 on the tree and I figured I should replace the outputshaft seal while I'm there since the trans leaks pretty bad.
But yeah do I need any kind of special tools to remove it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I use a screwdriver most of the time. Just pops right out.
Replace them all or your poor back will have to spend another 32 minutes again doing it later bud.
😁😁👍👍
Don't you just hate working in rocks? When I bought my k2500 last year it was just before winter and I put it at a storage unit and it was all rock just like that, well needless to say I worked on that truck all last winter I already knew what I had to do it been parked for 8 years plus so you know new fuel pump in the tank new fuel lines new brake lines etc etc. On top of everything else the rear hubs were stuck and the front drums were stuck to the wheels yeah man what a battle that was. Well guess what now I have it over at my daughter so I don't have to pay a storage fee but I'm back in the Rocks again, haha. I'm going to pull that whole motor out I've already got it torn down to the short block and don't let anybody tell you you cannot pull an oil pan on a 350 motor on a four-wheel drive without dropping the front unit this is a 2000 model I'm talking about so most people drop the whole front unit not me I listened to one fellow that I came across and he said pull the motor mount bolts and put a jack under the crank and I did and that pan is off. Well enough of me I want to say thank you for yet one more video.
Nice job
Thank you for another enjoyable Friday night. The way you film and edit is perfect. Not a bunch of time wasted watching like watching others who insist on showing the slow death removal of every bolt. You have the perfect line: "Let me do this and I'll get back with you". Keep up the great work Chad!
I appreciate you mentioning me in your video. Also, and oh by the way, since you rebuild several transmissions, get you some grease called Trans Jel. Trans Jel is super thick grease that will keep those pesky needle bearings in place. It also works great at holding check balls in place on valve bodies. Tech tip for manual transmissions: Take your old counter shaft and turn it down a couple of thou and shorten it on the lathe. Then, insert it in the counter gear to help hold the needles. Place the counter gear in the trans and insert the new counter shaft, through the case, behind the old shaft. And gently push the old counter shaft out with the new one. Some people use a wooden dowel to do the same. Great video! Keep up the great work
Old countershaft? You've got to have a new one in order to have an old one. 🤣 Eh, I don't do enough transmissions to need all that fancy stuff anyway.
I always thought that "shifter arm" was the stick as in a stick shift, lol. Also, I know they don't look as "cool" but if you could find a vintage steering wheel with its larger circumference I bet it'd make it a whole lot easier to steer with its manual steering.
Alright, Good to see You & Dude. After the Day I’ve Had this is Much more than a Vidja, you offer me 53 Minutes when I Might Smile. With You not at You!😂 Appreciate you Having us Along, catch you on the next one. Keep It Safe Out There Sir
I'm going to guess that when you were putting the little clips back on the main shaft when you explained the taper on the clips to hold the snap ring pliers in, I guess that when you jumped cut to 'that there was very aggrivatin' todo' means we didn't get to watch you deal with that due to possibly not so family friendly language? : ) I'm sure that's not the case, but if so, it does happen to all of us!! What a great time spent with you working on that m20.. great gearbox for a chevy!!
edit: I figure with most jobs, it ain't right if I only had to do it once!!
I like your rating of the experience, negative 100 out of 10. I’ll have to remember that. 😂
I am impressed! Those little needle bearings drive me nuts. Good job! Ty
International lubricants maximum transmission assembly agree that will not let the little roller balls all I wanted to put them in there. It’s so damn sticky it’s sold under Lube Gard and I am, but I can’t remember what it’s called. You can look up the number online and order it like I don’t want 100 number for international lubricants it’ll say Lube Gard when you look it up online they started out making the transition lubricants and Parts be stuff for that former head of Exxon Mobil chemicals is I was the head of the company at his retirement oven.
I remember rebuilding a Corvair 4 speed and I used a dummy shaft to retain the needle bearings while I lined up the shaft in the case. Then I pushed the real shaft in, which pushed out the dummy shaft. That worked for the transmission, but I think it only had 2 rows of needles, not 4
Parabéns irmão por esse canal top. Gosto muito dos seus vídeos! Tudo de bom pra você, abraço.
if a bar connects at the end its a bar
if it connects somewhere other then the end its a lever
I have not worked on a rear wheel drive transmission for years but when I did, I always used a shortened "dummy" shaft in the countershaft gears to hold the rollers in place during assembly in the box. I think that is how many were assembled in the factory.
Love your videos can't wait to see what's coming up I'm disabled your videos help me get through the day and ol dude is looking good love you Brother keep them coming 👍
We all learn from comment's!!
I'm glad you posted this one. I've watched many transmission rebuild videos on youtube to help my own rebilds. This is the first one that looks and feels how my rebuilds go! Good to see you got it figured out and Dude is back on the road!
That was another great video thank you for taking us on a test run that old truck will still run pretty good. Looks like it would be fun to drive.👍👍
Good job man
Great work on the Manuel transamission, I Never got to see one taken apart and reassembled in such detail love your videos awww yeah!
go watch a vid on zf 5sp..that munci is nuthin..
@@harrywalker5836 Thankyou
The door latches on those old chevy trucks must have been terrible. I've seen so many movies and TV shows from the '70s and '80s where those trucks are being driven agressively, and the door comes flying open in so many of them.
Would you tell us what type/brand assembly grease you were using please? Thanks for the very informative video!!!!
I can't help but smile every time I watch you working! :-)
Frustrating, sure! End Result, Satisfying! Great job!
I'll check out the merch, but not going there... looking at your junk .... thats just not right! Got my own junk... LOL, yeah thats what we called them/lol, as most of us did in the service. You did a great job on the transmission. I do think I used rubber bands to hold the clips on those synchro clips. And I believe some of those clips had a "S" clip on the inside part of the clip that would hold them in place when new. All those wide ratio transmissions howled at the moon after they broke in. We ran the scavenger pipes on the ends of our "at best" poor exhaust systems that was drain pipe or heaven forbid water pipe and lots of different exhaust systems stick welded together so that it looked like a freak system at best. The scavengers dumped in front of the rear end an sparks flew when we downshifted instead of using brakes to slow down in the corners. Those pipes would cackle loud as we went by the preacher's house. He stood for it till his boys went off to college... then to my surprise brought out his own hot rod! A 63 ford galaxie Fairlane ... only his was a 289, three on the tree an he sold it to my little brother. I looked under it to see just what all was under it as we all did in those times. It had one of the nicest racing suspensions ever an it stayed in corners like its feet were glued in. It had a second gear that went clear to ninety mph and then shift into third to just bury that speedometer! It had the wide ratio transmission... I'm soft on memory but think it was called a M2 transmission... don't think that is correct but every gear in that transmission was super heavy duty and like for first would run sixty mph. When you looked at the speedometer it said "POLICE SPECIAL" and I do believe it for sure. I did everything to get that car from my brother as it was one of the nicest two door hardtops I've ever looked at. I would put my ssi check up for collateral, that it had a low number of productions made. My kid brother was one of those clean cut church boys and I was one to black his eyes just before church so when he would stand in church with both of his eyes turning black he could remember me right well. I was a grease ball, hair included with the black leather vest and engineer boots. Everyone hated me and shuddered at the thoughts of their daughter going out with me. I rode my harley up to my brothers wedding and made a ton of dust and noise but he stayed back from me and then one night when I was bugging him, he shot me five times in the back. It was just a 22 so had my woman dig them out with a knife. I thought I was tough. When I went to nam, I found out .... yeah, my s*** did stink and I was not the big bad a** I thought I was. Heck, now you probably hate me too.
had an auto, wanted to go 5 sp. so, bought 2nd hand box, & re build kit. gave it to a guy to do, he said, there was nothing wrong with it, but i gave him the kit to fit..now,,seeing it didnt actually need fixin,,now its fixed,,the front thrust bearing is loose, noisy..some people just should not be mechanics..
This should start you thinking...Why do they call them 'washers'? And while we're on the subject...hows come you don't got no tattoo's, or a beard...or your hat turned around?
I love that old truck. but those 90s model Chevys are my love. the97 and 98s have the vortech350. those engines are awesome. but I love the TBI also
Every four speed I ever owned had some third gear whine, its part of the experience.
Though you can just git it boy in first -second and shift right to fourth ... cruisin gear, gives ya more time to look cool and wave at the girls. lol
Nice work, enjoyed watching the muncie rebuild.👍
I was thinking that 80 is not divisible by three. . .81 is though.
Nice. Your Dude sounds like my Geronimo F100 ford. Full of squeeks and squacks😅😅😅
If I owned old dude I would pull the old wire out motor and transmission and put a 350 with a cam of sort and a auto trans but that's just me just because I can't do all that shifting because my back won't handle it anymore
An old mechanic taught me to wrap the gears with Teflon to keep the tabs in while moving everything it works pretty good and when it’s together the tap just pulls off
Thanks,
Great video as always.
Hope you’re feeling better. 👍
Yeah I have to do things a hundred times over also and being as I have zero patience for such things it involves alot of cussing and the occasional throwing of objects in order to complete such tasks.
Classic Miss Daisy appearance💌🐕
I rebuilt three or four munchie three speeds in my dad's old 72 pickup and he kept blowing second gear out until we got rid of the button clutch
A lot of people don't know what a synchronizer is cuz you used to automatics I don't know if you want to explain on that slows down the gear so you can shift into it or the hell with it I would probably say the hell of it
They have green red and blue transmission assembly grease green is thick and will help hold bearing and such red is thin and blue is medium
I have zero idea what's happening most of the time in these videos but I find this channel extremely satisfying
Chad can you close the shutter on your camera, we can't see through the windshield for the glare, when test driving a vehicle.
29 year Eaton Transmission Rep here. I absolutely love your videos.
in time I found the bast way to retain parts when rebuilding those M 20s was to use Vasolin to hold me in place
what yu could do with that ring,,is have thin tags, under the bolts to hold it. maybe, i dont know..
Put a thin zip tie or string around the gear/keys while dropping it in then cut it before finally seating it in.
