Watching this made me feel so bad yet happy for Kyary! She started from such humble beginnings with her mom not supporting her and not able to afford much and now she is such a star!
Don't be fooled into thinking that Japan is a magical place where you can walk around as a lolita all the time. People do think it's strange (hence this TV interview)- some people don't even like to be photographed in case their classmates see it. Of course it's fantastic to walk around Harajuku and see all the fashions, but it's seen as odd just like everywhere else.
This is a reality that wapanese need to realize. I've studied and live in Japan and pretty much most Japanese people think the whole lolita shit is stupid. The only place that it's common is Harajuku, but everywhere else? No. Japanese don't even like their own otaku/lolitas, so don't think they'll see foreigner ones in a better light.
summerwars90 people everywhere have the same thoughts of it but i think many people into lolita or other j-fashions want to go to japan is because people wont yell at you and they feel safer there.
Btw Wapanese arent usually accepted by western lolitas either due to the whole(coming from an anime) thing. Most are coming form other underground fashions like steam punk, goth, etc
This reminds me...when I went to Harajuku once I wore panda hat which I just bought there. Before going there I thought that harajuku is a place when we can wear literally anything without being embarrassed, but when I put the hat and walk around I feel like a crazy/freak person so I put it in my bag 😂
+Haridonya There is. Gravure is pin-up, for admiring and creepy fantasy. Swimsuit was for a catalogue I believe? For the school uniform swimsuit or something? Either way, clothes modeling is different to gravure
I can't believe I can finally see what Minori looks like without her makeup on, I have never seen a photo of it until now. she is beautiful with and without it. She is so talented and I have always loved her laugh :) . And yay, Kyary!
I wonder what KPP's mom thinks about her fashion style now that she's famous. Some strict parents loosen up when they see their child/ren has made a career out of it, some remain critical of it.
My parents too, won't always agree with all my decisions, this is why as soon as i finish college i'll be heading right to Tokyo.. So glad that Kyary made it!
i know exactly how that girl feels, my mom and especially my dad don't like my fashion 2 much, sometimes they'll act like they don't care but a lot of the time they question and when they do i get hurt deeply because I'm very passionate about how i dress/look i try hard not to give a shit about what people say/think cause this is me and how i can express me (along with my personality). But of course u also have 2 know ur limits, u can't always dress how u want everywhere :) BE AWESOME 4EVA !!!
People also need to know that no matter where you go people will say stuff about you, and judge you whether it is positive or negative. Thats how life is. You need to learn how to not to care about people's opinions. Just wear and be whatever you want as long as it makes you happy. If you can't deal with hearing people saying negative stuff to you then dont be or wear anything bizarre.
Wow, what a trip. I now remember this newscast. I was in Japan at the time and I saw this on TV in my hostel. Never would have guessed Carrie would turn into Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. Whoever posted this, thank you (or arigato). I'll bet Kyary's mom isn't complaining about her fashion now! Love Kyary! She so KAWAII!
Honestly I love Japanese fashion and how you can basically go out and wear almost anything you want and most people won't think you're crazy. I love how these people just go out and express their individuality through clothes and I love how people don't really judge them for it.
For one, I love that KPP was always a crazy idol even before her debut song, but also in true rock star fashion her mother and father totally didn’t understand or expect what was about to come in a few years.
See, I love people who just dress like this, even if other people don't like it. It makes them stand out as separate individuals and proves creative imagination. Lots of respect for this fashion in Japan!
Maybe many people don't know, but even back then, Kiriko was already very well-known in the business of junior idols. Looks humble and a little bit poor, especially annoying is her non-supporting mother; she was still waiting for the explosion of 2011 that took her to the highest, although she was already Kyary, so ready for the jump...
You're so right, because people (who are already) being interviewed on national television my not wish to be photographed. Plus, it's not like those girls spent weeks perfecting their outfits, and then internally went to Harajuku to be photographed.
also, Cosplay is thought of in much the same way, like it's something young people do all the time, like they are all dressed that way whereever they go but it's not the case. They do cosplay and dress up to go to Harajuku as a form of escapism of the sterility of most of the city and strict or conservative life.
I dont get why people think Japan is like some place a "perfect place" that you wont get judge and wear whatever you want everywhere? Japan is like any other country wear people will judge you no matter what like America and other countries. Small districts like Harajuku or Shibuya then people dont mind of what you wear but anything outside of Japan people will stare, questioning, and comment you whether positive or negative.
I love lolita style, but i think my mom would also react like Kyary's mom, if she saw me going out doors or school dressed this way. But that doesn't meant i won't join in.;3
I got really uncomfortable when kyarysama's mom came on screen. she sounded like she was trying to dilute the situation and kyary looked so unhappy. I think her mother was putting up a front. multiple times I have semi fights with my mom about things and they go alot like when kyary and her mom were talking.
ppl seem to able to dress like this in japan because while they might get some looks no one will point and laugh or say rude things out loud because .....well they dont want to bring attention to themselves and/or be rude
Wow this is really interesting you can see Kyarys real personality and she admits that she even argues with her mom and wears stuff againt her wishes. Today all we see about her is this super fun kawaii girl, is that even the real her or is she what her producers want her to be? i
@kristiankaulitz13 I think it might be. It's not illegal to take pictures. If someone just "happens to be in the way" then it's not really his fault. but I guess if they ask him to delete it and he doesn't they could do something :U I don't really know lmao
Watching this made me feel so bad yet happy for Kyary! She started from such humble beginnings with her mom not supporting her and not able to afford much and now she is such a star!
Minori and Kyary both made it to be pretty iconic in the tokyo fashion world! It's nice to see that Kyary had so little clothes, kind of inspiring~
1:58 Mom inspired the dance movement for tsukuma tsukeru

CAN'T BELIEVE SHE WAS ON TV BEFORE SHE WAS FAMOUS! XD
she was a gravure idol when she was a teen
+Haridonya She modelled for swim suits for school wear.
Very different to gravure.
+Haridonya Read her autobiography.
Ummm but theres no Difference
I saw a video for her that she is sitting while the camera man was do a video
sorry for my bad english
+Haridonya There is.

" She doesn't have much money".
Now she have millions, i guess :D
I wonder what KPP's mom thinks about her fashion style now that she's famous. Some strict parents loosen up when they see their child/ren has made a career out of it, some remain critical of it.
I want to know it!
Kyary became mega-famous for her style. I bet her mom doesn't mind her going outside now!
The white-faced girl is Minori. Her Twitter is "cute_minori".

It push KPP struggle so much that become a famous fashion pioneer and a super star. I think she is a cute and brave girl. It's very good to learn.
So you still wear excentric??

Respect for Kay. She chased after her dream!
Kay is so inspiring! I want to follow her footsteps someday because I'm highly obsessed with the lolita look!

kyary's mom hated her false eye lashes and now she made a song about eye lashes kekeke !!
I wonder how her mom feels now that kyary is a star xD

At least I know which place in Japan that has "uniqueness" or "weirdness" in fashion: Harajuku.... That Kyary is soo adorable though! Can't resist. >.
Wow I bet her mum probably respects kyary for making a career out of what she loves instead of just freaking out her neibours haha well done !!
I remember seeing this and being like 'wow! I like her style best! She is so pretty and cute' and then she became a giant superstar. :)) I love Kyary
I haven't seen this in years ‼ To think so many of them are doing well know its great to see ▶♥‼‼
Maybe many people don't know, but even back then, Kiriko was already very well-known in the business of junior idols.

SO proud of kyary !! she has made it so far!
i wanna know what kay is doing now
You're so right, because people (who are already) being interviewed on national television my not wish to be photographed. Plus, it's not like those girls spent weeks perfecting their outfits, and then internally went to Harajuku to be photographed.
she's adorable
omg i just saw this video... and from this part, kyary became really really hit superstar!
I came back for Kyary but I noticed that Kay is so cool!! I hope that shes doing okay now.
Keep the cuteness flowing kiriko-chan
i like how Kyary's father says "I think she can do as she like". kinda sounds like my dad. :D
Her papa supported her ~! What a good papa.
×carrie→○kyary
LOL'd @kyary and minori!! im a big fan of those 2 girls today and looking at this now makes me really giggle!
Minori ♡

LOL It's funny to see how miserable Kyary looks while her mother is talking about her.
so cute..
Awwww, so this is Kyary before she was famous? I had no idea she is so young!
this is treasure
when kyary speaks really wanted to cry... like " i go out after figthing with my mom but I'm still kawaii" XD
5:15 the girl with white hair is so beautiful (':

Love Minori's laugh :P
Some of those lolita outfits looked like some outfits in my lolita magazine some looked exactly like some outfits in the magazine
and then Kyary got famous and wrote a book about this story. YOLO.
not so much in Japan, if you can find a group who are into the same style you are then your basically good to go
Kay gives me hope xD
Wanna go to japan!!!
I love lolita style, but i think my mom would also react like Kyary's mom, if she saw me going out doors or school dressed this way. But that doesn't meant i won't join in.;3
Dang, you really never know what life has for you
I never knew it was Carrie, I wondered how to say her name
Eeeep! I LOVE Kyary! :3
Kyary's like 15 here btw
I got really uncomfortable when kyarysama's mom came on screen. she sounded like she was trying to dilute the situation and kyary looked so unhappy. I think her mother was putting up a front. multiple times I have semi fights with my mom about things and they go alot like when kyary and her mom were talking.

I LOVE 6:55!! CUTE!!
I know, I was concentrating it on the Harajuku area I just forgot to mention it :P
unlike the U.S...where ppl can be outright rude
i want to be exactly like kay when im older
ppl seem to able to dress like this in japan because while they might get some looks no one will point and laugh or say rude things out loud because .....well they dont want to bring attention to themselves and/or be rude
kyary pamyu pamyu omg..
Actually in japan everyone tends to be more conformist and most people try not to stand out. But in tokyo this is very common.
that's true
IM MOVING TO JAPAN BYE
i wonder what kyary's mom thinks of her now?
@doorframepush
no, she looks 16. she doesn't look 17/18 now, lol.
Wow this is really interesting you can see Kyarys real personality and she admits that she even argues with her mom and wears stuff againt her wishes. Today all we see about her is this super fun kawaii girl, is that even the real her or is she what her producers want her to be? i

Talk about starting from the bottom. Good for her :)
Wow was that really kyary? omg I didn't know 'O'
