The lack of the second air popping was actually something I actively disliked on my Fireblade coming off my Street Triple. Currently shopping an S1000R and it's going to be nice to have it back again.
RJ´s passion about riding and motorcycles in general, gave me the will to get back on the saddle after my big motorcycle accident. In some way he was my therapist and the Nuda was his hot assistant.
My ZRX still has it's air injection system and I personally love the popping on decel. It's very aggressive coming from high RPMs with my aftermarket muffler, but sometimes I would like a smoother sound. I may install some block off plates in the future, but that would be for removing the excess plumbing.
It's called SLS in BMW world. It's actually meant to reduce popping by burning it earlier in the system. Deleting/disabling it enhances the popping because it ignites right at the exhaust tip. Just the tip, mind you, and only for a minute.
There is no 2017 KTM 690 SMC. All of them sold this year are a limited number of left overs from last year KTM is allowed to sell. Only the 701 has the Euro 4 engine.
corect i own one as a everyday bike and i cant say nothing bad about it i love it. One thing u have to do is change the seat, change the mirors cuz are ungly otherewise the stock are very good at all and gearing get one 15 touth front and u have the best bike u will ever ride.
What I want to know is why does the S1000 engine note go 'wobbly' when in low RPMs? It sounds smooth at high RPM but when on the overrun at low RPM it sounds strange.
That sound I have heard in the MV Brutale 800 as well. Definite wobble wobble sound haha when going into idle. I hear it ever so slightly on my Striple as well, but way more noticeable on the s1000, and MV Brutale.
KTM 690 Enduro and SMC do not have the new twin balancer shaft engine that can be found in the recent Duke 690 and the 2017 Husqvarna 701. FYI that SMC has the twin spark 690cc engine that RJ has already ridden.
My friend has an S1000R and I have an XR. He showed me that if you twitch the throttle just barely a few mm on decel, you can exaggerate the pops. I nicknamed it the Popcorn Flick. We do it all the time when we're out riding.
they had AIR INJECTION on cars in US from 1968 to around 1984-ish. I had a 69 chevelle and a 1983 S-10 with it. It was fine unless you put on aftermarket full flow mufflers, they both would pop and crack,.. the chevelle would spit out little fire balls that got me many of tickets,.... oh for younger days,...;-} cheers.....
He has seen this comment :). Not yet, thinking about it. Not sure on the theme and want to do something a little different. Hopefully for the summer, doing some off-roading in Wales and a Wheelie course lol
Eliminating the SAI simply eliminates the SAI and keeps the computer from throwing a code. It will just get rid of the popping. My street triple has SAI and pops quite a bit when closing the throttle. What it does is inject fresh air into the exhaust. This combined with the heat and fuel causes left over gas to ignite inside the later part of the exhaust keeping emissions down.
RJ.........another great entertaining video. love that SOUND....pop pop thanks for explaining i was wondering how and why it made that unique sound. ride safe
That's right RJ, but if someone hasn't had his bike tuned after making any mods that affect the AFR, then it's probably in need of a tune. Bikes generally pop when they are running lean.
RJ, were you using dual audio recording in this video? When you lifted the helmet shield to talk to the KTM guy, the audio was echoing. Just for the record, your videos are the best in quality I have ever seen on UA-cam bike channels. Cheers from Brazil! =]
Kawasaki calls it the "kleen air system". its possible to mod it out by plugging some hoses and as a result it stops banging when closing the throttle at high RPM. Not that i would do that.
I wasn't really aware of that when I bought my S1000R, since it's winter here and could not go for a test ride, but damn! I love that! The thing that really mindfucked me is that the characteristics of this engine on this bike feels like my Z4M Roadster just transformed into a bike - same pops and bangs (quieter because I'm running stock exhaust on the roadster), similar power delivery and incredible engine sound plus surgical precision. I was blown away! It's like both of these machines were engineered by the same team. P.S. Now I want Akra on the Z4M as well....more $$$$ and I haven't even started modding the bike. Oh well...
I have a Suzuki SV 650 S on which I installed a carbon fibre exhaust it pops and burbles when I back off. I've had it tuned by some guys who race bikes across Australia including Philip Island. They said its a not a problem and not to worry. I like it as well so if they arent worried why should I be?
Getting old sux, bad back replaced hip. I regulated to a Harley heritage now, miss the others, the BMW, Duc and the rest that have had to go by the wayside
my old honda cbf 500 2006 it has a carb but it olso has the fresh air system to exaust if you down shift and go from high rpm and let it go down it wil pop
Are you ever worried about other bikers having helmet cameras, do you take extra caution to protect your identity? I noticed you opened your own helmet just slightly for the other guy to hear your voice. For the topic of this video, I've wondered that popping sound too so I feel this was a great little video about it.
hm ... i thought it was "overfueling" ... my xr does this only in dynamic and dynamic pro mode and only when in gear. from where did you get the "air injection" info?
Aw man cant wait to get out on the road when i get my license! Im gonna buy the new Svartpilen Husqvarna when it comes out! What do you think about those bikes RJ?
RJ do you know why on certain bike like the MT-09 people remove this air system when they change the exhaust by putting block off plates to prevent those poping sounds, but dosent on the BMWs?
Hey, some do these because of fuel-consitency which makes it easier for tuning (at least thats what I heard) I changed mine to permanently open under deceleration on my MT-09 and it pops and bangs now more and the flames are also now more present (you can find it in one of my videos).
That's pretty much what I heard too, I'm just wondering why it's such a thing on the mt/fz, but not on most other brands. Not sure about the open system though lol.
So these bikes have no or low carbon buildup in the engine? Because in cars I think they root it into the engine to be reused and burn the unburnt fuel?
Hey RJ which bike would you take first the s1000r or the s1000xr ? The reason I'm looking at the s1000xr is because there's a lot of bugs where I live Fl.
Hello @TheGrundig81. What do you mean you blocked it? Did it stopped the popping? I am asking because I have an 2009 Yamaha FZ1-N and I get a lot of popping sound on throttle release. Unlike RJ's bike that only pops only once, mine just keeps popping until very low RPM. By the way, where did you get the info on that? Might as well do it to mine, if it really works. Thanks.
hey, my bike had a one way valve that was connected to the exhaust so that it would inject air into the exhaust, i just blocked. honestly it did nothing, and my bike had popping and stayed popping after i blocked it, same as your's. The info i got it from foruns and topics on the internet, just search it. This was in my old bike, my present bike it has a similar system, but i won't even bother to mess with it.
Oh, thanks a lot. I've been trying to open it up earlier , but it was stuck on loading so I thought the faq site is bugged. Looks like my internet connection is dogshit after all, thanks again tho :)
Hi RJ, are you using the quickshifter exclusively for the upshifts? Tried to figure out if you were using the clutch, but I can't really tell. I have a brand new GS Adventure with the quickshifter. Must I be at full throttle to use it or 5-6.000 rpm is enough? The BMW guys tell me that you have to be at full throttle...
szlaeyer22 You don't need to be full throttle to use the quickshifter if you don't believe them try it out. Just like you can shift without using the clutch even without a quickshifter. But if you shift in the low rpms without a quickshifter it will ruin your transmission.
RoyalJordanian Well, unfortunately, I am stuck with them for now, because I ordered the bike with alarm, but it was not installed. So, I need to go back at least once, in order to have it installed. Until now I used the QS at about 5.000 rpm (I was told not to exceed this rpm during the first 1.000 km) and it seemed fine. Thanks for you answer. I look up to you, sir, and I wish you many more trouble-free miles.
Karl Hopkins Hi, thanks for your answer. For now I used it at around 5.000 rpm - until the engine is run in. But even after that I really don't intend to go much higher. The GS has enough grunt for my needs.
junkie Hi, thanks for the answer. I was told to upshift only when accelerating, so no upshifts were done with neutral throttle. I was also told to only downshift with neutral throttle. So, I guess the basics have been somewhat covered. In any case, I mostly used the quickshifter at about 5.000 rpm and it was just about right for my needs.
Brake fluid. the master cylinder is connected to the right lever and that controls the front brakes. the right foot pedal is for the rear brakes. Get a bike as soon as you can you'll love it!!
Saying a 690 sounds like a tractor is mean :( ... sure the standard exhaust is a pain in the ears but with a full akra system it is awesome. And because I own both I can say that it even comes close to the Nuda!

the front looks so so beautiful. don't know why people hate s1000xx series lights. in my opinion they are beautiful.
They're not symmetrical, which fucks with a lot of people's OCD.
Bike Life I like the facelifted models headlights better :)
Those crooked lights are love/hate thing. I
Indeed a real Dr Jekyll, and Mr. Hyde look. Adds to the character :)
Eva Braun was ugly.
3:46 love the biker's reaction ! he is so happy
His reaction is so wholesome
Love that popping and banging - I never new it was designed in.....thanks for that RJ
**knew** not “new”
0:20 replaying that for the past 40m it's too good
Same dude

That 690SMCR is just Drop dead gorgeous 😍
Nothing beats the pop in an exhaust... thanks for the explanation ... very informative
The S1000XR makes some obnoxious pops after the headers install... and yes, I love it.
Cuban Rider love the pops and bangs! After watching some of your vids I’ve become very interested in the XR. May get it after my single R!
You have lots of admirers in the motorcycle community R J. Thanks for all the videos.
You gottta post more vids of you riding the s1000 around london. The sound gets me every time.
Anyone else just love the fact that RJ never shows his face, not even to people he sees on the street. Reminds me of the stig haha
I love when you downshift and just floor it like in the beginning of the video! Please make a compilation out of it 😜
absolutely love the sound of your s1000r man

2016 690 has the old engine, think the 2017 has the same engine... could only be the new 701 which has the new duke engine...
There is no 2017 KTM 690 SMC. All of them sold this year are a limited number of left overs from last year KTM is allowed to sell. Only the 701 has the Euro 4 engine.
They produced the 2017 690's in end of 2016 so they can still have the Euro3 class
Lamb Chop Rides duke 690 has the newest lc4 with two counter balance shafts but ktm and husqvarna only have one.
701 got the newest LC4 for -17!
corect i own one as a everyday bike and i cant say nothing bad about it i love it. One thing u have to do is change the seat, change the mirors cuz are ungly otherewise the stock are very good at all and gearing get one 15 touth front and u have the best bike u will ever ride.
My MT-09 threw fire balls and popped like crazy with a full Akra installed, loved it.
That guy's 690 looked pretty sweet
What I want to know is why does the S1000 engine note go 'wobbly' when in low RPMs? It sounds smooth at high RPM but when on the overrun at low RPM it sounds strange.
Lumpy is the world I was looking for! Wobbly... FFS. It's weird though because it idles smoothly as well.
It might sound lumpy but it's as smooth as a baby's bottom.
Yeah already seen that ;)
That sound I have heard in the MV Brutale 800 as well. Definite wobble wobble sound haha when going into idle. I hear it ever so slightly on my Striple as well, but way more noticeable on the s1000, and MV Brutale.
Eliot Greaves - What a baby's bottom ?!!! i think we all have .
That system is the exact same thing as having a lean fuel mix. but as it is tuned, that lean mix is only when you close the throttle. Nice!!!
KTM 690 Enduro and SMC do not have the new twin balancer shaft engine that can be found in the recent Duke 690 and the 2017 Husqvarna 701. FYI that SMC has the twin spark 690cc engine that RJ has already ridden.
I really like the old intro more than the new one.
The old intro back, love it! :)
My friend has an S1000R and I have an XR. He showed me that if you twitch the throttle just barely a few mm on decel, you can exaggerate the pops. I nicknamed it the Popcorn Flick. We do it all the time when we're out riding.
Fantastic, love the old intro. It's far better. 👌🏼😎
My very stock R1200GS with the spec Alra pops like crazy as well and love it!!!
they had AIR INJECTION on cars in US from 1968 to around 1984-ish. I had a 69 chevelle and a 1983 S-10 with it. It was fine unless you put on aftermarket full flow mufflers, they both would pop and crack,.. the chevelle would spit out little fire balls that got me many of tickets,.... oh for younger days,...;-} cheers.....
I just picked up my 2nd XR on a 2019 plate in motorsport colours and I just fitted an Austin racing exhaust and it is loud, love the S series.
The BMW was the original reason i subbed here a fair while ago. NOw i just love all the videos. But the BMW remains my favourite bike :)
Please tell me the guy on the 690 has a channel 😍
Didn't get a chance to ask, he might see this comment.
He has seen this comment :). Not yet, thinking about it. Not sure on the theme and want to do something a little different. Hopefully for the summer, doing some off-roading in Wales and a Wheelie course lol
Just got my 2017 smcr last week great fun and a wheelie machine!
Subbed to this channel, let us know if you make a new one haha
Kynetix pretty sure you have haha
Eliminating the SAI simply eliminates the SAI and keeps the computer from throwing a code. It will just get rid of the popping. My street triple has SAI and pops quite a bit when closing the throttle.

Nice bike and video too...tell me, how many bikes you have? have fun and good continuation.
Kawasaki calls it the "kleen air system". its possible to mod it out by plugging some hoses and as a result it stops banging when closing the throttle at high RPM.
Not that i would do that.
Thanks for the explanation. I love the pops on my S1000RR too.
Everytime I watch your videos, I just want to hop on my bike and go for a ride!
I would love to hear you talk while riding! Love your accent! You should get a mic!
Popping or not those bikes are so damn epic
I wasn't really aware of that when I bought my S1000R, since it's winter here and could not go for a test ride, but damn! I love that! Love Egypt and riding there is fantastic.
RoyalJordanian did you ever been to egypt? ?
ahmed 123 he say he like to ride there dude -,-
Look his old vids. I rode in egypt with a copper
ahmed 123 You love him? Are you sick in the head?
if RJ isn't the best street rider on the technical aspect, I don't know who is....
Hi Rj , great channel !!! I got a question , how do you keap your bikes so clean and so shiny?? Regards from Portugal 🇵🇹
2016" RJ knew instantly with the new engine😎
RJ is the man

Even the WR125x has a little sas box that pups a little air into the exhaust
my old honda cbf 500 2006 it has a carb but it olso has the fresh air system to exaust if you down shift and go from high rpm and let it go down it wil pop
even tho just for 10min the XR was the best bike i've ridden so far and yes even on the standard exhaust she did pop ^_^
where do you have your audio recorder in this video? for conversation and bike sound, two different?
Are you ever worried about other bikers having helmet cameras, do you take extra caution to protect your identity? I noticed you opened your own helmet just slightly for the other guy to hear your voice.

So, is there like any option or mods to make an exhaust do more pops?
no mather wich bike and how many cylinders?
did'nt understand clearly sorry..
but if the fueling was right to begin with, should it not have unburned fuel in the 1st place and so it would not pop?
Is it just the SC Projects slip-on on the s1000r or is it the full system?
Sorry but how does the bike pump air into the system? If I heard you correctly...
So these bikes have no or low carbon buildup in the engine? Because in cars I think they root it into the engine to be reused and burn the unburnt fuel?
What kind of bike did the guy at like 3:50 have? Is it an mt-07?
Rj...where did tou buy these mirrors for the bike?!
My 2-Stroke has a SAS as well. Will it also pop and bang? I don't know because I don't have my license yet
Hey RJ which bike would you take first the s1000r or the s1000xr ? The reason I'm looking at the s1000xr is because there's a lot of bugs where I live Fl.
Royal Jordian what do you think about the yamaha fz-07 *mt-07*?
If that's true way does it not pop in rain or road mode ?
bmw إنها الأفضل من بين كل الدراجات ... أنا أحبها
Would an S1k pop in the US or no because different emission standards and tune?
what are your thoughts on the Ducati Hypermotard?
Sounds lovely
RJ..Sir you r the best👍
All bikes have this system in place. But not all pop n bang like the beamer does? I think the beamers run a different map than other bikes
Do you test a KTM SMC R?
Dariusz T would be nice
Dariusz T He did already a Husqvarna 701 what is the exact same Bike
iamnotapro 2 It's not really...
eLux_RL its on the same base
eLux_RL ....
My BMW S1000RR does not pop at all. I dont know why
So you shouldn't remove the SAS in a Super Duke if you want the same pop & crackle?
yes
Cool gloves !! What are these gloves?
See Gear on my website reel.tv/#!gear/
In yamaha i think it's called AIS(air injection system). I blocked it, and performance wise, didn't notice a thing.
Hello @TheGrundig81. What do you mean you blocked it? Did it stopped the popping? I am asking because I have an 2009 Yamaha FZ1-N and I get a lot of popping sound on throttle release. TheGrundig81 ok man, not exactly the answer i was hoping for but hey, thanks a lot for your input.
why the old intro?
Do you have to use the clutch to downshift, and do you still need to blip when dropping the gears?
in bikes with down+up quickshifters, you don't need to.
Hey RJ, could you post some info about textile jacket You're using for summer/early autums riding ? Thank You !
MK MK
Have you seen this? reel.tv/#!gear/
Oh, thanks a lot. I've been trying to open it up earlier , but it was stuck on loading so I thought the faq site is bugged. Looks like my internet connection is dogshit after all, thanks again tho :)
I love the backfires of my bike, sounds so good
Hi RJ, are you using the quickshifter exclusively for the upshifts? Tried to figure out if you were using the clutch, but I can't really tell. I have a brand new GS Adventure with the quickshifter. 99% of the time and no, you don't have to be full throttle. I guess you need to find a better dealer ;)
RoyalJordanian Well, unfortunately, I am stuck with them for now, because I ordered the bike with alarm, but it was not installed. So, I need to go back at least once, in order to have it installed. junkie Hi, thanks for the answer. I was told to upshift only when accelerating, so no upshifts were done with neutral throttle. I was also told to only downshift with neutral throttle. So, I guess the basics have been somewhat covered. In any case, I mostly used the quickshifter at about 5.000 rpm and it was just about right for my needs.
do you have a ducati RJ
🔥😊
I dont own a bike but want one someday, just wondering, what is that "piss cup" type thing on the handlebars???
Brake fluid. the master cylinder is connected to the right lever and that controls the front brakes. the right foot pedal is for the rear brakes. Get a bike as soon as you can you'll love it!!
what camera are you using for this?
Saying a 690 sounds like a tractor is mean :( ... sure the standard exhaust is a pain in the ears but with a full akra system it is awesome. And because I own both I can say that it even comes close to the Nuda!
VNTR Let me start off by saying that it is a matter of opinion, but to me, no matter what exhaust you slap on those 1 cilinder machines, they sound like a fart canon.
FABINHO 360 FORTALECENDO O CANAL +1 INSCRITO E NOIS TMJ PASSA LA VIDEO NOVO ABRAÇO...
Agreed, similar growl and bark. I have the Duke 3 with Akra. and K&N pod filter which makes it even louder. Obnoxious really, I may refit the airbox.
Well, the 690 Duke he test rode did sound like a tractor from the 80s.
i have the 690 smc 2011 although great fun id pick a 450 anyday
What helmet are you wearing RJ? I've had a look through your FAQ but can't see anything!
Luke Turner
It's not in the FAQ, but on the page with gear: reel.tv/#!gear/ and it's a Schuberth SR2 since 3 months.
Ed van Andel Thank you!
RJ I am very confused. I thought the Nuda was the best sounding bike but now I'm in two minds with your S1000R. What do you prefer?
Two very different sounds, the Nuda is still the Queen of them all.
RoyalJordanian cheers for the reply RJ. Yes I guess they are very different. Maybe one day I'll get to hear them in the metal. Safe riding my friend.
3:50 what bike is it?
rj u r best bro
Need 10 hours of your bikes sound video
Did you get a new helmet?
