@Dr. Tracey Marks I'm seeing some conflicting info about Melatonin. Does it cause issues with autoimmune disease? Hyperpigmentation? Also, if I take this at 7 pm so I can sleep earlier, does it have to be dark in the room? It's hard to pull that off.

Yes Melatonin can definitely stop working as all of the sleeping pills can. Unfortunately it's one of those things that we become tolerant to the medication.
This is great information! When I was in my late teens and twenties I always worked the night shift at restaurants because it paid more money. After that ,I was never able to get out of the habit of going to bed late. I think I might try this to see if I can bump up my bedtime.
Thanks so much for this video. I took 1mg at around 7:30p. I fell asleep at about 11p. It's 7am now and I feel pretty good. I woke up around 2:45a and didn't get back to sleep until 4a. I had to listen to a guided sleep meditation and eventually fell back asleep. I was on ambien but started sleep eating so it was discontinued. I was prescribed restoril two weeks ago for sleep. It works but if I can do the melatonin I'd rather do that. Thanks for the video it was very helpful.
You're welcome Tiffany. The low dose melatonin is to help you pull your sleep forward or recover from jet lag. If you're taking it to help you fall asleep and sleep through the night, you may be better off taking the 3mg, 5mg or 10mg versions.
Did you try the low dose melatonin 3-4 hours before bed for an extended amount of time? I do not see many people doing reviews after seeing Dr Tracey Marks video.

Hi AdeBamforth. Moving the melatonin up a few hours may make you sleepier earlier in the evening. That's the general effect of shifting your body clock forward. If you don't mind going to bed at 9, try taking the melatonin around 5 or 6.
I took a half of 5mg melatonin for my first time and I found that I dreamt a lot and feel drowsy and low in the morning, so what should I do more about this ? Increase or decrease this size?
I work five 12 1/2 hour night shifts every week. For many years I've had to pee every 1 to 2 hours which has robbed me of sleep. It's bad enough having to get out of bed every 60 minutes, but even worse is not being able to fall asleep after I get up. I tried melatonin a few days ago. Made me super drowsy about an hour after I took it. When I got up to pee, I could barely walk. I stumbled back to bed and fell asleep immediately each time I got up. My sleep was still broken but at least I did sleep. When I got out of bed to go to work, I felt like I'd taken a vicodin. The drowsy feeling wore off when I was driving and I actually felt refreshed. I was surprised that something so dangerous is sold without a prescription. 5 mg knocked me out. I think 10 mg would kill me. Anyway, it helped me so I'm going to keep using it.
Rat Man hi, the big concern is why your peeing every 1-2 hours. You should go to the doctor & find out the root cause. Then maybe you will sleep better. That is no normal & needs to be checked out.
Is the recommendation still 0.3-1mg as you said here Dr. Tracey? I see a lot of people, even kids, taking 5-10-15mg these days. Watching a lot of your old videos - so much great content!
Thanks for asking Surya and thanks for watching my old stuff. 🙂 The recommendation is still this small dose if you are using it to adjust your body clock like you would do for jet lag or trying to make yourself go to bed earlier. But most over-the-counter formulations, as 3, 5 or 10. in this case your taking it for the sedating effect and not so much for the body clock shifting effect. And being able to fall asleep is what most people take sleeping pills for even though its real purpose is affecting your body clock.

Dr. Tracey Marks, is it safe to take 1 1/2 mg Melatonin for long time, or you take it only when need it. most of the melatonin brands at my local stores comes in 3 mg, should I cut the tablet in half?
I guess it depends on your natural circadian rhythm. You can do online sleep surveys to establish what time your body's melatonin production peaks. Take the melatonin 90 mins before that on an empty stomach to coincide with that.

I will occasionally open and use half of a NOW brand 3mg gel cap sublingually just before bed. I hold and swish the mostly rice powder carrier under my tongue for a few minutes before swallowing it. This works well. I have had great luck using the "I Can Make You Sleep" book and CD that comes with the book. I rarely use melatonin anymore because the CD and book have reprogrammed my mind for a better nights sleep. I only use the melatonin when I need to shift my sleep cycle and get a deeper nights sleep.
Dr. Tracey Marks Thank you for bringing attention and ideas to the issue of sleep. I didn't realize how much our negative self talk about sleep contributes to insomnia. Unconscious fears such as "what happens if I don't wake up in time or wake when I am needed" also contribute. The reprogramming that the "I Can Make You Sleep" book and CD guide you through, helps with these aspects of sleep. The book is very easy to read and would have been a game changer had I known these things in college. A sleep tip I haven't seen elsewhere is to cup the hands together over the nose and mouth and insert the two index fingers gently into the notch in the socket over the eye. Breath into your hands for a minute or two. This will slow your breathing because the buildup of carbon dioxide slows and deepens the breathing. Pushing the finger gently into the socket puts pressure on a nerve that slows the breathing. This works as a quick method to down regulate the body. Covering your eyes with light blockers that airlines used to give out or a strip of black cloth boosts natural melatonin production. A white noise generator with nature sounds or a fan is helpful for some. I found this particularly helpful in a dorm or apartment situation. A relatively new contributor to sleep problems is blue light from the screens on our electronics. There are now apps available that modify and turn down the light from our screens near bedtime.

After months of insomnia. i will try 1mg tonight. I just took it. I hope it works because this isn't fun anymore. I was too late taking it though. Just 1.5/2 hours before bedtime
Taking 0.5 mg melatonin and staying up untill i feel completely exhausted has fixed my insomnia. Using a blue light filter on my phone after dinner has made it even better. So i can recommend it
Try also having Chamomile tea before the melatonin, or even better.....Passion Flower tea, good for anxiety and all that. 5mg should be okay, one thing that can really prevent sleep is anxiety or too much thinking.
Forget melatonin. Try one tablet of magnesium (citrate or better), right before going to bed (15 min before). It's the most overlooked mineral for relaxation. You'll see real results.
@@Luminous.Dynamics Chamomile tea is relaxing and great as a carminative (so you can pass gas), but it does make one pee more at night, I have found. Passion flower makes me sick; same with valerian.
You don't develop tolerance to melatonin as it is a natural hormone that the body already secretes. The problem with taking it daily however is that it will make you depended on it to sleep, the gland in the brain will stop secreting melatonin since the body will get it from outside sources. So if you're fine with having to use the pill everytime you go to sleep for now on, then yeah sure take it everyday.
Umm… I wish it were this simple! I am a chronic insomniac so in desperation bought some melatonin pills, took the prescribed dose at the prescribed time before retiring, had a fabulous nights sleep, felt a bit fuzzy the next day but really OK. The next night I took it again and didn’t fall asleep AT ALL but instead suffered the most atrocious psychotic episodes. As a consequence I have thrown the remaining pills in the garbage. So, My advice is to read up on the known side effects before trying it.

I also have tinnitus and omg I think it’s the result of depression. Thus things are maybe connected

timmzzzz88 Taking doses higher than the maximum is one of the risk factors for complex sleep behaviors such as sleep walking, sleep eating, sleep driving, etc. It's not a given that will happen, but it increases the chance when you take higher doses of any sleeping pill.
I have severe insomnia, my entire life I toss and turn between 3am-5am and awake around 11 everyday I took 3x 5mg melatonin (dissolve under tongue) within 3 hours between 11pm-2am plus sometimes Zquil 😢😴😭😪 if I have Gravol I'll take 1 of those with melatonin
+Dr Tracey Marks You mentioned to take it at 7pm if you plan to be asleep by 11pm... I sometimes have my dinner at 7pm, Does it need to be taken with food or can it be taken without? & How long do you take it for?
Not sure why she said that. NIH articles suggest that the half-life of melatonin is about 90 minutes. You will be out of melatonin rather soon after you hit the hay. If you don't fall asleep right away, you are out of luck.
I have been taking Melatonin 4 sleep since this new year, trying 2 go natural. The bottle says take 20 minutes before bedtime, and there 10 mg each, is 10 mg a too of a high dosage; becuz I hear you say 3 mg may be too high of a dose?.
It depends on the formulation. The common dosages are 3, 5 and 10. But it comes to the over the counter medications are usually say to follow the recommendations on the bottle. Because one companies 10 mg may be similar to another companies 5 mg.
Yes but is it also possible that it can stop working? I had a jar of it and did not take it every night. By the time I got close to the end of the jar , it seemed to stop working. I then found it even harder to go to sleep.
Not recommended to go over 10mg, but no worries, it won't harm you. Also it's for short term regulation of sleep patterns. So stop after a few days to feel for the change in pattern.
Hey doctor, I dont have a pineal gland due to a tumor removal. Would you recommend I take melatonin or should other parts of my brain make up for the gland being gone?
Did you try the low dose melatonin 3-4 hours before bed for an extended amount of time? I do not see many people doing reviews after seeing Dr Tracey Marks video.
Hi Mark! Melatonin isn't addictive, but it can become ineffective after a while. People usually say about 1-2 hrs before bed if its a short acting and 1-3 if it's long acting melatonin.
My doc says they give 10 mg. to older ppl in nursing homes (though with the condition of nursing homes, not sure that is a good recommendation). I'd say talk to a doctor or pharmacist you trust about this. I only have vivid dreams occasionally; doesn't bother me. I had them when I wasn't taking Melatonin also.
Is Melatonin safe to take if you have Epilepsy? I have Epilepsy (Though I'm on medication for it) and Insomnia and I'm a night owl. I read somewhere that people with Epilepsy produce less Melatonin than most other people. The Insomnia is probably due to that.
If I was you and if I had epilepsy I probably would be wayy more afraid of not getting enough sleep because not getting enough sleep triggers epileptic issues many times. Just drink some passion flower tea and take a little bit of melatonin. Source: My GF has epilepsy and takes Tegretol + sleeps plenty

I have delayed sleep phase from ADHD and I love taking Benadryl to help me sleep. Meletonin gives me massive headaches. Is there a way to take it that I don't get migraines and traditional headaches the next day?
@@Luminous.Dynamics just curious, do you have a neurological disorder that causes the circadian rhythm to be incorrect? Also does it delay the production of meletonin in your system until about 2 o'clock in the morning, while producing serotonin at about 12pm every day? Have you tried resetting your internal clock by taking heavy sleep aids at 5pm in the afternoon just hoping you'll be able to shut down enough that you can sleep, only to find your executive dysfunction causing a battle against sleep, right along side your stimulant medication? I am asking because I understand the risk of taking it nightly. Which is why I was asking if there is a way to take meletonin without debilitating migraines. What is the point of taking a supplement if it's just going to cause next day vomiting, and exhaustion along with crippling pain?

Taking 0.5 mg melatonin and staying up untill i feel completely exhausted has fixed my insomnia. Using a blue light filter on my phone after dinner has made it even better. So i can recommend it
Howmany pills did you take ?
@@caonimaaacao2682 can't remember how many pills. But i think it was between 0.5 and 1 milligrams.
Thank you! I didn't know the right dose...I started taking 5mg now I do 6-12mg and sometimes even with it I can't sleep 😭
Did you try the low dose melatonin 3-4 hours before bed? I do not see many people doing reviews after seeing Dr Tracey Marks video.
@@Luminous.Dynamics Chamomile tea is relaxing and great as a carminative (so you can pass gas), but it does make one pee more at night, I have found. Passion flower makes me sick; same with valerian.
Dr. Marks, can one develop tolerance to melatonin? Or can you just go on taking it daily for as long as you want.
Thanks doctor
Umm… I wish it were this simple! I am a chronic insomniac so in desperation bought some melatonin pills, took the prescribed dose at the prescribed time before retiring, had a fabulous nights sleep, felt a bit fuzzy the next day but really OK. The next night I took it again and didn’t fall asleep AT ALL but instead suffered the most atrocious psychotic episodes. As a consequence I have thrown the remaining pills in the garbage. So, My advice is to read up on the known side effects before trying it.
Psyhotic? Which symptoms?
Hey doctor thanks for yiur insight and your expert advice. Can depression cause vertigo and what cures it cause for the last 6 months I've struggled with vertigo ?
I think depression does cause tinnitus and vertigo I also took one month medication for it. I am taking melatonin because I have severe anxiety and cannot sleep like a normal person and everything bad /weird thoughts comes around nighttime and I just cannot fall asleep and causes me anxiety. I also have tinnitus and omg I think it’s the result of depression. Thus things are maybe connected
Also please go see a doctor if you can! It will help
Heavenly Sleep Liquid Melatonin , if I put into the juice before sleep , is that ok ?
my doctor told me to take 25mg of benadryl at 8pm and 5mg of melatonin at 8:30pm and im still up the whole day🧍🏻♀️
Is melatonin beneficial to take if I have FX syndrome? Will it help the circadian rhythm & being a night owl? I have read that it is beneficial for many reasons.
I have mental health issues I was being injected in rehabilitation center since then I haven't been able to sleep for 5 months now haven't sleep,, I need your help
Watching this right before my 1 mg Melatonin pill :3
Did you try the low dose melatonin 3-4 hours before bed for an extended amount of time? I do not see many people doing reviews after seeing Dr Tracey Marks video.
@@FishLubber I've tried 1 mg from the pharmacy, worked better than 3 mg from the drug stores such as CVS. I didn't do long term usage I usually quit after few days. I usually take it 1 hour before sleep I take it around 9:00 PM. But I think there is a difference between different brands.
Lol that intro description was so accurate
I will try this tonight I hate being awake
Thanks for these information!
Hello madam....i have...5 mg ...so can i cut and use..is that... good??.... please 🙏🏻 reply me
I take 3mg and cut it . But
Dr. Tracey Marks: Is their value in the 5mg and 10 mg doses?
Yes but mostly for sleep initiation. The higher doses are more beneficial for helping people fall asleep rather than changing body clock timing.
Can you take it every day? I saw a study where it benefits in fat loss and a higher metabolism output when at rest. But would your body get adjusted to the dosage and could it reverse your sleep, or even disrupt it?
Hi Doc, what happen if we take 10mg dose every day?
Dr. Please get me suggestion regarding the usage of melatonin. I am 53 year old man suffering chronic insomnia for 18 years and at present using qutipin25. Since last 3 months it does not works. Madom, what is your precious opinion to start melatonin and what dosage would be effective for me.
Good information. I use 3mg
Just got 0.3 mg to aid sleep had to order it from u.s a as not available in UK . Venlafaxine has been messing up my sleep patterns for years hope it works.
Thank you for informing us Dr Tracey!! Also you’re so beautiful

@@FishLubber i did try once! it really made me feel sleepy in a natural way however i chose to stay up regardless 😭
So.... I just took 20mg and THEN watched this video :/ woops... I assume it won't hurt me. But what are the problems related to too high of dosing?
timmzzzz88 Taking doses higher than the maximum is one of the risk factors for complex sleep behaviors such as sleep walking, sleep eating, sleep driving, etc. It's not a given that will happen, but it increases the chance when you take higher doses of any sleeping pill.
timmzzzz88 I took 10 MG last night and am just watching this lol.
It's kinda crazy that we night owls need to take drugs to adjust to the 9-5 world due to our genetics.
Really! Thank you for writing that. : )
was listening on my right ear only and thought this was a trick to get me to listen to asmr, but alas i figured it out lol
I have severe insomnia, my entire life
I toss and turn between 3am-5am and awake around 11 everyday I took 3x 5mg melatonin (dissolve under tongue) within 3 hours between 11pm-2am plus sometimes Zquil 😢😴😭😪 if I have Gravol I'll take 1 of those with melatonin
I'm glad this works for you
Thank you Dr.
Can you recommend a reliable brand?
J Claxton sorry I wish I could. I've talked to people who've had good results with multiple brands.
Ma'am.. Its ok I take this medicine.. without the doctor check up?
+Dr Tracey Marks You mentioned to take it at 7pm if you plan to be asleep by 11pm... I sometimes have my dinner at 7pm, Does it need to be taken with food or can it be taken without? & How long do you take it for?
I would take it on an empty belly before dinner to help absorption
Not sure why she said that. NIH articles suggest that the half-life of melatonin is about 90 minutes. You will be out of melatonin rather soon after you hit the hay. If you don't fall asleep right away, you are out of luck.
@@Cathy-xi8cb That's why I take it throughout the night, if I awaken.
Is it true that melatonin is bad for liver? Thank you.
תודה לך דר סטייסי
Can i give my mom 10mg melatonin instead of the 5mg one she is not getting a sleep
Whats a good brand to buy?
Our melatonin gummies may help you fall asleep faster and have a prolonged sleep. Our gummies supplement is vegan and it doesn’t contain gluten.
I know this is old vid. But can i ask sone serious questions about my sleep?
No
@@Hye12112 i agree no
You don’t need to ask
Hello dr , should I take it with water or just swallow the pill?
Unless it's a dissolvable tab it's usually best to take pills with water just to get them to slide down nicely.
Yes but is it also possible that it can stop working? I had a jar of it and did not take it every night. By the time I got close to the end of the jar , it seemed to stop working. I then found it even harder to go to sleep.
How high can you make the dose before the effects taper off
Hard to find....it's all 3 to 10 , never just 1 or less
No audio
What if you’ve been a chronic user (10+ years) and if you go without, your go three or four days before sleep finds you. Where do I even start???
You got my number Dr .T
I just took 20mg for my first time I hope I can get some sleep eventually
isnt that alot ?
Not recommended to go over 10mg, but no worries, it won't harm you. Also it's for short term regulation of sleep patterns. So stop after a few days to feel for the change in pattern.
I just took 2.5 pills that are 5mg a pill...is that bad?
I can't pin down my issue. The tiniest amount and I will be dead asleep for 11 hours.
I slept 5 straight hrs
@Pedroism sometimes 5 is all you need
Hey doctor, I dont have a pineal gland due to a tumor removal. Would you recommend I take melatonin or should other parts of my brain make up for the gland being gone?
For myself as a commercial driver I really have irregular sleep patterns, I am taking 6mg of melatonin, Is it safe to take 9mg?
I have 3 mg pills, so are they useless because the dosage is too high?
Mam can I used it for sleeping during opiod withdrawals coz m facing extreme imsonia

Is melatonin 5htp??
Is it addictive? When is the best time to take it at night to help you relax before bed?
Hi Mark! Melatonin isn't addictive, but it can become ineffective after a while. People usually say about 1-2 hrs before bed if its a short acting and 1-3 if it's long acting melatonin.
@@DrTraceyMarks are there any side effects?
Here's a good source of information on it www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-940/melatonin
Is this safe for older people? What about the vivid lucid dreams issue?
Thank you
@Phuong AMG Nguyen thank you !!
Ask your doctor
If I was you and if I had epilepsy I probably would be wayy more afraid of not getting enough sleep because not getting enough sleep triggers epileptic issues many times. Just drink some passion flower tea and take a little bit of melatonin.

Does it matter if I take Melatonin XR or IR? I have 1mg pills but they're the XR type. It made me feel quite fuzzy at morning.
Is it okay to take melatonin when you're taking an antipsychotic drug?

I have delayed sleep phase from ADHD and I love taking Benadryl to help me sleep. Meletonin gives me massive headaches. Is there a way to take it that I don't get migraines and traditional headaches the next day?
Pretty sure things like Benadryl aren't safe to be taking every night.
Benedryl is very drying. Do not take on a regular basis if you have asthma (this was told to me).
Mine says do not take for more than 14 days so is that in a row?
