Good morning from off grid northern Minnesota... when we first jumped we spent 5 mo in tents while we built and a full year hauling rain water and no electricity etc. I'm glad I had the experience, but we ended up hand digging our own well and I hooked up solar... small solar, but still.... we use a compost toilet.... BUT, the balance is HARD HARD HARD.
when I didn't have water, I just wanted a hand pump well, then I wanted an electric well, then I wanted a running shower and hailed my water from the bathroom to the kitchen sink, now I am dissatisfied and this weekend am putting plumbing in the kitchen. first I wanted one lamp, then 2, then one in my room, then a small tv, then one upstairs and one for down, and I went from washing clothes by hand to a twin tub to now a full washer.....
I am off grid true, but I feel like I'm consuming still at a rapid rate. I'm not buying crazy luxuries, but I feel it. I think it can be a slippery slope for me. I have to learn when enough is enough. as a spoiled person in a wealthy country.... balance is so delicate. thank you for this..... it doesn't have to be all way or one, but learning balance is the key.
and blessings to you and Jack ♡♡♡♡

Hi Collette, I live a hybrid life: passive solar, heat with wood, gas backup, grow as much organic/ permaculture food as possible. I love my internet because I have my own eco groovy programming like your videos and Pinterest. I can watch old videos of inspiring people, learn and store and catalog info. My husband has saved money watching videos and fixing equipment himself. So I love my best of both worlds life and access to inspiring people like you.

The fact that you like to share your love of Mother Earth says a great deal and why you have a large following of like minded individuals all over the world. You and your world add to our much needed quality of life.

Hi Colette, I think the tide is turning on consumption and excess. More and more people are becoming consciously aware of how we have been sucked in, as you say, and awareness is the first step towards change. It's like the proverbial 180 degree turn of the oil tanker at sea (if you'll pardon the rather unfortunate analogy), a very slow process, as we've become so deeply hooked. But it's happening - hope we have time!

I saw about how a few yrs ago you almost had to sell? OMG I don't want that to happen not do I know what will happen to your woods after you, but I pray that someone with your same thoughts will take great care of Bealtiane Cottage 🙏🙏🙏

I don't have a TV ..no washing machine...no car....try to use tealights rather than lights where possible don't miss 'em but lord, I need my internet ....only way to get supplies and keep in touch with friends and family who are all around the globe and now banking as last bank closed in the small town near me in Wales...If I lost that connection, things would be very difficult....if I had money would I be tempted go back to the modern conveniences....not sure but for now I try to live simply....

I may agree with you on the internet connection altho I stated below and contemplating a possible disconnect if I have to chg my present ways if 5G comes around here. I love the simple life as I've lived with with the conveniences which are ok but don't give as much as simplicity in my way of thinking. peace

Dear Colette , i too could not live like Mark Boyle now lives without any technical equipment . But people like you and him encourage us reconsider everything to others . What do you really need , how big is our footprint . My footprint is still to big, but i am working on it . We live in a city with 500.000 inhabitants . Wall on wall and terrace on terrace with the neighbors . My freedom is somewhat limited , but you can take it . Consume much less of everything, waste nothing, pay attention to Mother Earth and listen to her . I think it’s nice that there are many different ways to fulfill his dream . Your video has sensitized me even more cautious to deal with the recourses . I wish you and Jack a nice day. Best regards and many hugs for you and Jack and your loved ones from Conny Braun and cat Felix from Germany . 🐝❤️🌺👍🌞🙏🏼

    Hi Colette,
I've followed Mark for a long time and I've always been fascinated by what he's done. His two books on living without money were inspiring. "The Moneyless Man" as he called himself. He did a fantastic blog for The Guardian newspaper for a long time. It would be fantastic to witness you and him having a good chat. There's so much that's wrong with modern living...... but you already know that.
Personally I think the most important area of technology is modern medicine and healthcare. Having said that so many people are far too dependant on medication. My best medicine and therapy for wellbeing is the garden.
I hope you are enjoying the weather.
    Patrick x

As with everything, finding balance is the challenge! We have TV s but don't use them. Our home is 40+ years old and that means modern. We are both old now and would never have the energy to do all the hard work to change it. We garden, preserve our food, go very little, live very simply. Our biggest problem is our home is all electric which I hate. Oh well, it's all about balance. We do what we can.

Mark Boyle lives a wonderful life and while the world has made many amazing technologies we are slowly destroying mother earth. More of us need to live like him to help restore balance and restore mother earth before it is too late.

Using what works for each of us in a purposeful and mindful way and encouraging others to do the same is what brings balance to our lives. Humans will always impact mother earth but with a little restraint both earth and humans can prosper. I think this is one of your best videos because you have stated simply the base of your purpose at Bealtaine. Blessings

Hello Colette, I'm with you on the abuse and overuse of the word "sustainable." What really gets me perturbed is when a person says that they have reach a "win win" solution for the environment and economic pursuits. There is no win for Mother Earth, but a compromise, when denaturing happens for private or corporate pursuit of money.

There's so much inertia built into your society that we need people like your friend who head so far in one direction to shift the inertia in that direction just a little bit. And then another person will go a little bit further, and the lumpy middle bit moves a little bit more.
I want to live in a way that feeds my Spirit, and the technology I choose to have around me enables me to do that. It is, as you say, not the technology itself that's the issue, it's those fear-raddled humans that get it all wrong that're the problem.

I often think that technology is neither good nor bad until it is applied through human wisdom or folly. It is the intention and attitude that has gotten us so fouled up. The greed/economic applications of technology. If it were instinct in human beings to apply technology only when benefitting Mother Earth, well...it would be a different world.

I;m letting some steam out here because my heart bleeds.Today some of my neighbours in my condominium commited through force a new crime against Mother Earth(.They cut out the flowers of dandelions in the grass in the garden in front of the building for God's Sake ,can you imagine that ? They spray everything with chemicals ,I can barely remember how our garden used to be full of green grass, trees, flowers bees, birds, butterflies ,dragonflies, bumble bees)Now it is an arid cold dried formal space and completely bare from now on because today they cut out the last ones ,two gorgeous ,oh my God splendid pine trees that I grew up with.It bothers me so much cause it's the tendency all around. I am walking near the trees around the whole town that are completely mutilated(Absolutely all the branches are completely cut just the trunk is left then the trunk disapears too cause it gets sick and too ugly to look at ( They say it's for the benefit of the tree and to protect the people from falling branches )and this is done by the city at the request of its citizens because they are afraid of trees.Oh My God,where does this world go?!

    • @carolhenderson2466
      @carolhenderson2466 5 років тому +6

Maybe, they will replace the pines with some smaller trees? I'd be willing to bet that if you and some neighbors get together they will consider some plantings. Getting them to stop putting out chemicals will probably be harder. People are very naive when it comes to the use of chemicals. I'm sorry that this happened. Green space with living flora and fauna makes me happy too.

We already had 15 smaller trees They were the first ones to go they were butchered in the same manner 10 years ago and there was no replanting cause they want a stupid burned out lawn. They had the nerve to call us to clear up the mess and when we told them a few words they said they made the decision for us cause we don.t know what beauty is and we can thank them for educating us.
