- Career Q&A with Jonathan Groff. Moderated by Richard Ridge, Broadway World.
Equally versatile on stage and screen, Jonathan Groff can currently be seen as King George in The Public Theater’s acclaimed world premiere musical production of Hamilton, with book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. In June, Groff will star in the Encores! Off-Center production of William Finn’s A New Brain at New York City Center. Jonathan Groff can also currently be seen as Patrick in the second season of the hit HBO television series, “Looking.” Created by Michael Lannan and directed and executive produced by Andrew Haigh, “Looking” follows the lives of three gay friends as they navigate life in modern-day San Francisco.
Jonathan recently appeared opposite Bradley Cooper in Clint Eastwood’s critically-acclaimed film, American Sniper. He also starred in the HBO telefilm, The Normal Heart, directed by Ryan Murphy and also starring Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, and Julia Roberts, among others. Adapted from the award-winning play by Larry Kramer, the film chronicles a gay activist who attempts to raise HIV/AIDS awareness during the early 1980s. Groff also lent his voice to the character of Kristoff, the rugged mountain man, in Walt Disney Pictures’ Academy Award-winning animated comedy-adventure, Frozen. Directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, and also featuring the vocal talents of Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, the film was released in November 2013 and it has since become the highest grossing animated film in history.
Other film credits: C.O.G. (2013 Sundance Film Festival), Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock, Robert Redford's The Conspirator, and the independent drama, Twelve-Thirty.
On the small screen, Jonathan gained notoriety for his role as Jesse St. James in Fox’s hit musical comedy series, “Glee.” Groff then joined the cast of the critically-acclaimed Starz political drama series, “Boss” for its second season. Among Groff’s other television credits include a guest-starring role on the lauded CBS legal drama, “The Good Wife.”

He was the recipient of an Obie Award for Outstanding Performance - Prayer for My Enemy, directed by Bartlett Sher, at Playrwights Horizons, and The Singing Forest, co-starring Olympia Dukakis, at the Public Theatre. West End debut in the heralded revival of Ira Levin's Deathtrap.
Most recently, Jonathan joined Alfred Molina in the Donmar Warehouse production of the Tony Award-winning Best Play, Red at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.
His voice is so soothing. Can someone make the 10 hour loop of this?
yes! please!
He is so smart and handsome and so in love with his career which makes him so appealing to all of us. His speaking voice is so smooth and his singing voice is so beautiful...such a talent!!
i think jonathan groff might be one of the most down to earth people in the world of hollywood/broadway
Esther Kaplan and christian borle
I agree! Unless he is the most talented actor at being a kid who fell into the absolutely best dream life. I hope he is genuinely a real and actualized person.
@@birdshell I’ve read both about fans who have met him and people who know him/his family personally that he’s as nice as he seems
We grew up together and it’s absolutely true. He’s the same great guy he was in our high school days. 👍🏼😊
His talent seems to comes from great ability and hard work that he makes fun. He seems to have gotten parts at an early age. Living in the moment an example of being present and contributing. So many people are worried about what they will get. He is always acknowledging everyone else graciously and confidently knowing his abilities. Everyone wants to be around him.
The lesson he learned was to put a bubble around you no matter what the critiques say and do the work
Doing the same show and popular opinion changes the energy.
I'm still sick over "looking" being cancelled after season 2...it was so good!
Brilliant actor. Looks and sounds like he is having fun when one interviews him. We need more of this type. Great Q&A.
I saw him in Deathtrap and met him at the stage door. It was the first time I genuinely wanted to meet someone after the show. I hope I wasn't cold (?) I was just shy to ask for a picture and conversation. I felt like I was bothering him, I wasn't sure what stage door etiquette was! But he came over to me and asked if I was alright. So kind. Really lovely man. Loved this interview.
I'm so late to Jonathan Groff fan club. He's amazing.
I am too...He also was the lead on HBO's Mindhunter, in which he plays an FBI agent. He is so good, that I very often forget it was Jonathan! Also, there's a wonderful clip on UA-cam of him performing "Anything Goes." Enjoy!
God, I'm hanging on his every word. He's such a darling.
Love what he said about McAvoy because he's an absolute favourite of mine too. Also I feel less bad about giving him that death grip hug last week in London - we aren't cold, truly we aren't.
Omg i’m so late to the Groffsauce craze but, he is SO AMAZING! And I love his voice (of COURSE)
I love the interviewer laugh.
Anyway.....Dear Jonathan, I'm sure MacAvoy is a really nice guy and all, but, I mean, have you ever met yourself?!? YOU are the nicest guy in the freakin world!!
Groff is one of my favourite people in the world, such a talent!!
Same.
Groff has done so much work! I'm embarrassed that I had no perception of him until the Merrily revival. Such a good-hearted man and so fearsomely talented.
Could have listened for another 2 hours! Such an ease and comfort.
A wonderful and gifted artist, so enthusiastic and well-spoken. I am a massive fan!
I like an interview where my rose-colored glasses get snatched off. Cute, adorable, aww Jonathan is a-MAZ-ing, la dee da.... then 37:50 and beyond. I have a new level of respect for him and his evolution as an actor and a person.
How can I say no to an almost 2-hour interview with Jonathan Groff.... :D
same c:
Jonathan is amazing he seems like a lovely young man.
NOw. . .thanks to the Pandemic. . .much of America has met King George (or JG’s portrayal of him)on Hamilton on cable. . .and many more have then clicked on his many other UA-cam appearances and know what a sweet smart guy he is. . .in my 70’s but I stan Jonathon Groff in every performance of his that I’ve been able to catch.
Amazing beautiful man- inside and out!
Talented to the max. He sounds like a down to earth friend who can sleep in the barn and still be cool!
God. I love him. Loved him in How to succeed last week. I went from Italy just to see him. He has the most beautiful voice. I hope he continues to work on broadway. He is a great actor as well but when he's singing he is really in his element.
Good for you! I went to see him from Italy as well in 2010 when he starred in Deathtrap. He is one of the most talented artists around. And such a nice guy. Love The Groff!
What a nice person. I hope you get that message someday, Jonathan.
I love how when Richard would mention another one of his films/shows Jonathan was just like, “oh yay.”
Adorable 😂
51:08 imagine getting an invitation like that from Jonathan Groff… my heart❤️🥺.
I love how he's just sitting on his left hand the entire time
“I don’t want to spoil anything” ...it’s history
I love love love Jonathan! Such a talent! So happy he's had such success!
unbelievable talent, down to earth and one of the best "people pleasers" on the planet
What a great interviewer and a great Jonathan Groff :)
his voice makes me so chilled out
A hilarious video is when Jonathan forgets the words while singing in the musical Spring Awakening. Showbiz Stories channel. So funny!
Moment 33:40, that genuine laugh. So cute.
I love him. His vois is so calm and warm. I will listen him to sleep. God
A hilarious video is when Jonathan forgets the words while singing in the musical Spring Awakening. Showbiz Stories channel. So funny!
I watched the clip of listen to your heart and you can totally see them laughing!! Haha! this was a great interview!!
My heart , every time he talks about Lancaster 🧡 I lived there 4 years, loved everything about it! Missing it!
I can focus on 1 hour and 45 minutes of Jonathan Groff talking but not 2 hours of a marvel movie
This has been so incredibly helpful. Thank you Jonathan, for being so candid and open about your craft, and thank you to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation for asking relevant questions.
What a great interview! Amazing interviewer, and such a talented actor!
I see Groffsauce I click 😍😍
Who’s here in June 2024 after Jonathan won his first Tony?! 🎉
I love him and lea 😭😭
Much love Jonathan! Thank you so much for everything.. 💓💓💓
The Lea part was so funny 🤣
Hope i can hv one chance to meet him one day...When he told about his experience about being closeted...i'm just thankful he was out and being free to be who he was...cause nothing can replaced the freedom to be who we are...but also its depend on the circumstance i think, sometimes u just can be out without giving any consideration that might effect ur relationship to those u're close to...
I think this chair so uncomfortable for to get a long time, but the interview so awesome 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
"Do you think you might go to Broadway someday?"
AhahahahahHahah!
Yes, young Groff, you certainly will.
-voice from 2020
One of the most underrated beauties in Hollywood. So handsome!
I'm trying to do a school project about him, and I legit can't focus on what I'm supposed to be focusing on.
I Had to do one about Alexander Hamilton but i am Not allowed to use the musical
Jonathan is the type of person that I would really like as my neighbor and my really good friend. I love this guy. To everyone and anyone who is a friend of his all I can think of to say to you is ... how lucky can you get. "😉"
Seriously, he's a gem of a person!
He's so funny and bubbly

can someone please tell me, what does the interviewer ask at 1:26:32? "It never seems to be...?"
'It never seems to be gratuitous". Gratuitous means ' for its own sake', so in this context the interviewer is suggesting that Groff's nudity onstage seemed justified in the context of the play.
Oh to be that cortisone shot.
can anybody tell me when is the part that he talks abt listen to your heart?
Around 32:15
I love this guy...ok I know, but I love him anyway. He doesn't have to love me back.
Hamilton filmed brought me here but anyone noticed his thumbs when he bends them?
Love this interview! Does anyone know the interviewer’s name?
Richard Ridge :)
I came here for mindhunter. Does he talk about it at any point?
I think this was before mindhunter came out
