Absolute legends...Happy Birthday Charles Hawtrey, and I will never forget the time when i was very young when Kenneth looked down his nose at me and said "Certainly not" when i asked for his autograph!!
In reality Williams and Hawtrey did not get along very well. Kenneth Williams was very repressed by his homosexuality while Charles Hawtrey was very open about his. Williams resented the fact that Hawtrey was able to express himself so freely while he could not.
There is an actress who does a stage show that touches on the life of Charles Hawtrey and she explains that Hawtrey changed at some point during the filming of the Carry Ons. She spoke to one person who knew him before who knew him as a warm, kind and generous person and someone who knew him after who said he was the most mean, nasty, miserable person you could imagine. So something happened to him in between that made him horrible, probably to do with his heavy drinking.
They both also had strange relationships with their mothers. They both adored their mothers for most of their lives but when they started to get old and infirm, it strained the relationships a lot. Hawtreys mother developed senile dementia and Williams mother became bed ridden needing constant care. Caring for their mothers when they had so many other problems became a real burden on both of them.

Don't take it personally I think he turned down quite a lot of autographs according to his diaries. Still love the bones of the man though.
Well you’d not expect him to say anything else really . Ye-esssss, mmmm heart face ? Lol
Charles Hawtrey did great drag. Very good as Lady Puddleton in Carry On Again Doctor.
These 2 together is hilarious and camp... ARE YOU READY AGATHA. TO WORK TO WORK .
THEY SHOULD OF HAD A SHOW TOGETHER..
Please do. I love it when he is trying to sit down and his corset creaks most alarmingly.
I think this is the only time Kenneth Williams does drag in the Carry On films. It was usually up to everyone else.
LOLLLLLLLLL, LOVE THESE 2!

I was not aware of this, I thought Williams did not get along with Hawtrey, simply for the fact that Charles had a severe drinking problem.

His mother's death perhaps?
COCAINE IS A HELLEVA DRUG
Absolute genius
Classic. 🙂
Hard to believe watching this that these two supposedly despised each other

Charles could carry this off much better then kenneth!
I should upload a clip of him fiddling with his knickers :-)
I think I would have preferred a snooty and rude remark from Kenneth Williams compared to a fake smile and bad scribble for an autograph! ;-)
