    Very helpful, Clear and Nice explanation. People who have not fundamental idea in Revit will not love it. This is not what someone will do frequently at work but good to know how family is created in Revit. I like your videos.Thanks

    Thank you for this video. I carried the exercise setting up the bookcase east of the vertical refrence line and north of the horizontal reference line, both on plan view. This way i needed much fewer aditional reference lines to create in order to achieve the result.

    Great video!
    One question, though: is it possible to define array number as a parameter, so I could increase the height of the bookshelf while at the same time increasing the number of shelves?

    Outstanding, I just need the lower compartment of the bookshelf to work as a closet with 2 doors, i will try it myself depending on ur simple tutorials, thanks a lot

    Hello, Can you make a video on how to draw a parametric kitchen in Revit? thanks

    In the finished bookcase the various extrusions overlap with each other at the points where they intersect. Is there a way to merge/boolean so that the lines and volumes do not overlap? Or is this not a problem when it comes to rendering? Great video, by the way.

      @SmarterArchitect  10 років тому

      David Stafford#LPFWLP_S Yes, you can merge the extrusions together...on the modify panel, there is a "join" feature that accomplishes that effect. Rendering is not affected either way but you will need to assign the material to each extrusion if they are not combined.

    Hi!
    It is helpfull up to one stage. I am trying to make a closet family using your video, but problem is that I am stuck with the door drawing.
    Should I add two more components in front of the unit to make the doors??
    Thanks for your reply

    • @SmarterArchitect
      @SmarterArchitect  9 років тому

      Sammy EL IMAM Interesting. If I understand correctly, you want to basically add doors to this bookcase unit. Yes you can create doors using the extrusion tool and build handles as well. It will involve a little more work to make it appear properly in plan view....but in 3D view - the object will be fine.

    Also in this video, can you please show us how to save the bookcase into the Revit family to create a library?!?! Thank you.

    • @SmarterArchitect
      @SmarterArchitect  7 років тому +1

      We used a family template to build it so just hitting save completes the family creation.

      Just load the bookcase with books and you have a library.

    I am working on learning how to design mullions in windows. I want to make windows with parametric mullions. Even spacing and locking those to window height or width is easy, but I want a window that gives me a parameter for how many mullions and what thickness mullions. Can you give me a tip on locking an array and naming it so it appears in my properties dialogue? I'm really trying to figure that out. For your next video that would be great! thanks man, your awesome. You have really helped me with your content.

    Does Revit make sense for interior designers? I create very intricate models in Sketchup and I feel Revit is too cumbersome for creating presentation models. Responses appreciated...

    • @SmarterArchitect
      @SmarterArchitect  7 років тому

      Its not a simple answer by here's my opinion. If you are advanced in Sketchup and have not need for construction documentation, then maybe the Revit investment is not worth it. So look at the long-term goal as much as possible. Also remember that whatever firm you desire to work at will likely have a preferred software workflow especially if it's a small business. However, I know many interior designers who learn Revit because the architectural designers have already built a base model in Revit and it just makes alot of sense plus it can all be rendered directly through the Autodesk Revit platform. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribe! Really great new content coming in 2017.

      If you got as good as this guy, yes, it would be great. I learned in a program called Cheif Architect. As a design program, it is AWESOME. Much faster and more specific. It's like 2,500$ flat fee though. While Revit lt is cheaper, making families is slower. You can do it if you understand work planes though. I don't know a lot about Sketchup, but I dont think it has work planes or parameters. I could be wrong. I think Revit is really optimised for construction documents on buildings myself. It models really well also, but slower. If you really take your time making your own families, and make as much parametric as you can, then its like a single instance time penalty. Cheif, you can go in to a cabinet, change its front, hardware, shelves, drawers, materials, countertop and backsplace material, thickness, height, etc etc etc. Everyting can be changed. And it will import sketchup models, though they are not parametric besides being standardized. Revit, though, is the industry standard. As a draftsman, I see everyone wanting Revit. So...

      No matter what software package you use...remember that the most important factor is "software compatibility" with your project team. Most software packages allow export to CAD feature, but be aware because it does not always translate all of the information accurately. As a consultant, it will be critical to be able work in the platform of the rest of the project team when possible. This is the reason I am currently using Revit 2015, 2016 & 2017 because the program is not backwards compatible and I am on project teams using different versions. Do not overcomplicate this though - Learn Revit - it will not be a waste of time as a large share of the industry is in BIM or moving there now - increase your personal marketability. That's where I started.

      TIP - If you are building industry standard cabinetry, then you are not taking advantage of Revit resources like Autodesk Seek or manufacturers who offer Revit families of their equipment listing. Watch the ARCAT tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/tCFwXHVvNFI/v-deo.html

    Hi SmartArchitect. I really need your help in creating some kitchen cabinets. It is being too hard to find the right video showing with detail as your, but I am still having problem with ref plane. Please help me. :(

    • @SmarterArchitect
      @SmarterArchitect  7 років тому

      Let's look at this from a different angle Diana. Next time you open Revit....go to Autodesk Seek and download the Merillat Cabinetry for starters. There are over 1200 different styles of cabinets ( base, wall & corner here )available for use in your projects. Try opening one in the family editor and dissecting it to understand the components. Reference planes can be understood as the guidelines used in conjunction with parameters to control the way our family types flex in Revit. Play with a correctly formed cabinet first and see if it helps bring you along better. Let me know how you're doing with it.

    If I have a cabinet family created and I want to be able to turn shelves on/off and switch the pulls without creating a whole new cabinet family, how could a person do this?

    • @SmarterArchitect
      @SmarterArchitect  8 років тому

      I'll give you a hint until I can develop a Revit tutorial on that more advanced set of steps. There is a visibility toggle for each element while you are in the family editor environment that can be modified as you create the different "types" within the cabinet family. Hope this helps - but I mainly use video tutorials because I have found demonstrate to be the easiest and clearest method for understanding. Consider signing up for the upcoming Smarter Architect - Revit course. It will be awesome plus I will be giving even more focused attention to that group of students for Fall 2016.

    thats because you are expected to have some base knowledge in revit before going into family creation in revit. t is intermediate level tutorial not beginner

      Kseny, I agree that I would not begin learning Revit with family creation, but I try to keep the content - step by step and easy to follow if you watch each video in the set. The difference with Smarter Architect is the fact that you are not alone in this learning process, even the course that I am launching in June includes several hours of personal Question & Answer time with me. I hope you all consider signing up. Registration coming soon...

    Person performing actions in video is too all over the place with little explanation of what is being done as if to assume you are completely familiar with the process you are performing.
