- नेपालको लुम्बिनी अञ्चलको रुपन्देही जिल्लामा अवस्थित बुटवल उपमहानगरपालिका, प्रदेश नम्बर पाँचको राजधानी हो। तिनाउ (तिलोत्तमा) नदीको तटमा अवस्थित चुरे पहाडको काखमा, पहाड र तराईको सङ्गमस्थल यो नेपालको प्रसिद्ध व्यापारिक तथा शैक्षिक केन्द्रको रूपमा परिचित छ।
यस शहरलाई पहिले खस्यौलि नामले पनि चिनिन्थ्यो । बटौली पुरानो बजार हो, खसौली नयाँ बजार । अहिले बटौली र खस्यौलिलाई बुटवल भनिन्छ। यस नगरको नामाकरण सम्बन्धमा बिभिन्न जनश्रुतिहरू सुन्न पाइन्छ । बिभिन्न ठाँऊहरूबाट मानिसहरू बटुलिएर बसेको हुनाले "बटौली" भनिएको र अपभ्रम्स भई “बुटवल” भएको भनिन्छ । बुद्धवल्लीबाट अप्रभंश भएर बटौली नाम रहन गएको पनि भनिन्छ। पूर्व मध्यकालिन नेपालमा, कर्णाली प्रदेशमा स्थापना भएको खस राज्य विस्तारकालमा बुटवल क्षेत्र खस राज्यअन्तर्गत रहेको र खसहरु बसेको थलोलाई यहाँका रैथानेहरुले खस्यौली नाम दिएको पाइन्छ। वि.सं. २०१६ मा यसको नाम फेरियो र बुटवल-खस्यौली नगरपञ्चायत राखियो। बहुदलीय व्यवस्था पुनःस्थापना भए पश्चात् त्यसको नाम बुटवल नगरपालिका रहन गयो र हाल बुटवल उप-महानगरपालिका भएको छ।
अहिले बुटवल सहर भएको ठाउँ बगर थियो । इतिहासकारका अनुसार तिनाउ नदीपारी बटौलीमा बजार लाग्थ्यो । चीनको तिब्बत र भारतको गोरखपुरको व्यापारिक थलोको विश्राम नाका पहाडको फेदी मधेसको सिरान नै बटौली थियो।पहाडबाट घिउको भारी बोकेर बटौली झर्थे । घिउ बेचेको पैसाले नुन/लत्ताकपडा आदि वस्तु बोकेर पहाड उक्लिन्थे । बटौलीमा नुन किन्न हिँडेर गएको कथा सुनाउने बुढापाका अहिले पनि भेटिन्छन् ।
बुटवललाई रामदेखि बुद्धसम्म जोडेर इतिहास लेखिएका छन्।भगवान् राम बटौली (तिनाउ पश्चिम) हुँदै गण्डकी नुहाउन गुल्मीको रिडी, पाल्पा रामपुरको रामनदी हुँदै गण्डकको भ्रमण गरी खस्यौली (तिनाउ पूर्व) हुँदै अयोध्या पुगेका प्रसंगहरू छन्। बुटवल बुद्धकालमा बुद्ध खेल्ने बुद्धवल्ली थियो ।लाहुरेहरू भारत प्रवेश गर्ने नाका र खस्यौलीका भट्टीहरूमा रात बिताउने चिनारी बुटवलको पछिल्लो इतिहास हो।आधुनिक बुटवल लाहुरेको बुटको आवाजसँगै हुर्किएको हो।
राष्ट्रियताको प्रतिबिम्बका रुपमा स्थापित युद्ध ईतिहासको ‘ऐतिहासिक र पुरातात्विक सम्पदा’ ‘जीतगढी किल्ला अर्थात उजीरसिंहगढी’ बुटवल उपमहानगरपालिका वडा नम्बर १ पूरानो बटौली शहरको तिनाउ नदि किनारमा छ। उजिरसिंह थापाको नेतृत्वमा रहेको फौजले पराक्रम र चलाखी देखाई यसै गढीमा बसेर अंग्रेज कम्पनी सरकारको फौजलाई हराएकोले यस गढीलाई जीतगढी भनिएको ईतिहांसकारको तर्क छ। बिश्व बिजेता अंग्रेजहरुलाई धुलो चटाउन सफल जितगढीले जोगाएको हाम्रो शान आजसम्म पनि यहाँ युद्धसम्बन्धी जीवन्त ऐतिहासिक वस्तु तथा प्रमाण भेट्न सकिन्छ ।
महेन्द्र राजमार्ग तथा सिद्धार्थ राजमार्ग द्वारा नेपालको पूर्व पश्चिम तथा उत्तर दक्षिण जोडीएको बुटवल नगर भौतिक पूर्वाधार र विकासमा द्रुत गतिमा अघि बढिरहेको छ ।लुम्बिनीमा पर्यटन प्रवद्र्धन गरी ग्रेटर लुम्बिनी क्षेत्रभित्र पूर्वाधार विकास गर्न भन्दै चन्द्रसूर्य आकारमा सम्मेलन केन्द्र निर्माण थालिएको छ । बुटवलबाट सिधै बुद्ध जन्मस्थल लुम्बिनी जोड्ने र पश्चिमी क्षेत्रबाट लुम्बिनी आउने पर्यटकका लागि बेलवास-बेथरी पर्यटन मार्ग निर्माण सुरु भएको छ ।बुटवलका ऐतिहासिकस्थलमा रामपिथेकस अवशेषस्थल, जीतगढी किल्ला, मणिमुकुन्द सेन दरवार र पर्यटकीय स्थलमा मणिमुकुन्द सेन उद्यान, हिल पार्क, सिद्धबाबा धाम र पद्म चैत्य विहार छन्।
‘सबल आर्थिक केन्द्र, समुन्नत बुटवल’ भन्ने नारा लिएको बुटवल उपमहानगरपालिका, संघीय तथा स्थानीय विकास मन्त्रालय अन्तरगत वित्तिय आयोगले नगरपालिकाहरुले पालना गर्नुपर्ने न्युनतम शर्त र कार्य सम्पादनलाई मापन गरेको मुल्यांकनका आधारमा २०६९ साल यता देशभरका २ सय १७ नगरहरुलाई पछाडी पार्दै ‘बुटवल उपमहानगरपालिका’ लगातार पांचौ पटक देशकै सर्बोत्कृष्ट नगर हुंदै आएको छ ।

Big cities in nepal are mostly along the highways. Its therefore unplanned ones. Roads along the highways are wide and tributary roads are narrow. We need planned cities.
Right but in butwal area there are many big roads ...like 1st highway, 2nd highway, 3rd highway etc...even street roads are of 2 lane .... its not planned but a lot better and managed than other nepalese cities ..
