  • Action Movie starring MEL GIBSON and SAM NEILL: Attack Force Z - A group of Australian commandos launch a secret mission against Japanese forces in World W*r II.
    Attack Force Z (1981)
    Director: Tim Burstall
    Writers: Roger Marshall (screenplay)
Stars: John Phillip Law, Mel Gibson, Sam Neill
    Genre: Action, Drama, History, W*r
    Country: Australia, Taiwan
    Language: English
    Also Known As: Z Force
Release Date: 18 May 1981 (France)
    Filming Location: Taiwan
    Reviews:
"W*r films formed the basis of many a childhood, mine included, and this film is a firm favourite of mine, my brother and my cousin.
Made by the Australian film industry it is one of two films about the Australian Special Task Force Z during the Second World W*r. It shows that the war in the Pacific was not won solely by the Americans and that the Japanese occupation of China was brutal to anyone who would oppose them. Having seen photos of what the Japanese did to Chinese relatives of mine and to the population of China in general this film goes someway to highlight a rather forgotten piece of history.
Having said that, taking the film as an action/ w*r drama it is well paced and fairly realistic with but one feat of fantasy. As cinematic trivia it is noteworthy for the performances of Mel Gibson, Sam Neill and singer/actress Sylvia Chang pre-stardom. The star that never was, John Phillip Law takes centre stage for the most part but is beaten for intensity by Gibson as the young officer. The effects are a bit ropey, the blood has the red paint quality of w*r films of the late 60's - early 70's, but this adds to the charm.
If you like "men on a mission" films you should enjoy this."

It's great to see this movie again! I watched it over 40 years ago when I was an elementary school boy. This movie was shot in Peng-Hu, Taiwan. Mel Gibson and Sam Neill were very young then.
Years ago, Mel Gibson and Sam Neill came back to Taiwan, and visited the scenes they shot this movie.

    I wouldn't be here without "Z" Force
My father having survived the Sandakan Death March and escaping from the extermination camp at Ranau was close to death in hiding in the jungle in Japanese occupied North Borneo
My father and his companions were assisted by heroic local Dusun people who were able to contact "Z" Force operatives in the area who came to their rescue

27:32 This doesn't make much sense. Why would that Japanese soldier pray at a foreign Buddhist temple ?
During the WWII Showa Era, the Imperial Japanese government promoted and supported only the local Shinto religion. Buddhism and other foreign religions were strongly frowned upon.

I mean no disrespect to any actual member of Z force but as far as the mission portrayed in this movie,,, as a United States Marine (inactive) it was Charlie Foxtrot from the start.. as soon as they ran head first into a machine gun nest it was apparent this was not going to go well at all... I truly hope that actual missions were a bit better planned and executed with a bit more honor .... call me old fashioned but we don't leave men behind and we don't execute a leg wound ...

Most of there missions were well planned and excuted a few went wrong usually due to unforeseen circumstances. Anybody found by the Japanese were executed as they were working behind Japanese line's . They did well considering their limited resources. One training run they did was at Townsville managing to slip 10 fake limpet mines on ships in the harbour under the noses of Australian and American guards. They got into a bit of trouble for successfully doing that without getting caught as genral blamey had authorised them to used whatever means necessary for training but they didn't tell anybody about it until after the fake mines were discovered. They were bloody good at their job.

Lots of these are clandestine missions deep behind enemy lines, the commandos knew the risks and accepted the consequences, including possibility of choosing death over captivity. Wounded men left behind were eventually caught, tortured and killed by the Japanese.
After the daring raid on Makin Island in 1942, the US Marine Raiders also left behind several men who were later captured and executed by the Japanese.
      All tragic fortunes of war.

Beside the Z Force from Australia, the Australians (and also a contingent of Indians) also bravely fought and defended Hong Kong during the Japanese Christmas invasion in 1941 where they stood their ground and fought a losing battle, meanwhile the Colonial British officer all went into hiding as cowards without even firing a single bullets as they think the Japanese will only kill the Chinese so they surrendered to save their own skin.

    • @pauljones1481
      @pauljones1481 Рік тому +1

It was Australian and Indian soldiers that surrendered with the Colonial British Officer Lt General Arthur Percival, the man you are talking about, so when you mention 'save their skins' you are talking about Australians aswell as Indian soldiers surrendering with the British Officer. British soldiers at this point of the war were fighting in Europe.

People forget that the Australians, New Zealanders and others help win the pacific war against Japan. The majority of the commonwealth troops fought in New Guinea and the Philippines under the worthless Dugout Douglas MacArthur. (I’m American) Australian troops stopped the Japanese on the Kokoda trail within 48 kilometres of Port Moresby. It is also forgotten or over looked that the Kokoda trail battles and eventual victory there was due to the American carrier fleet at the battle of the coral sea. The Japanese we’re going to land at Port Moresby and that battle stopped that from occurring. If they would of landed there. Port Moresby would of been lost to the Japanese forces. The Japanese stopped the overland route (Kokoda trail) because of the marine landings on Guadalcanal. They couldn’t supply both areas, and the Kokoda trail troops were hard up for supplies, and high command stopped them. They could of taken Port Moresby if they were allowed to push on. They’d of captured the allies supplies in Port Moresby. The high command wanted them to pull back to defensive positions near Buna, Gona ect until the Guadalcanal matter was settled. The Japanese lost a lot of troops, men, weapons, ships, pilots, aircraft, and supplies trying to retake Guadalcanal. We know how that ended. The Japanese called it starvation island eventually. Then the (mostly) Australians fought the Japanese back across the Owen Stanley mountains to the east coast of New Guinea. They had the hard fights of Buna, Gona, and the other locations. Costly slugging matches against well trained motivated Japanese troops. The Americans helped, but they weren’t very good or as good as the Australians. Once the Australians got there 25 pound guns involved things were much better at destroying the Japanese fortifications. Australian troops stated you could be a meter from a bunker, and not see it or be aware of its presence. The Australians were and are exceptional troops in my opinion. (Im an old army ranger during the early 80’s) nothing but respect for them. It was an allied army that defeated Germany and Japan. Bulk was American troops, American equipment, supplies, air, and naval units. But it was a joint effort and everyone played there part to the victory in 1945.

My dad told me when he relieved a Army Garrison up in Van Took 1967. The Army base was loaded with draft doggers and drug addicts. He never saw so many US soldiers down and out! This is a good representation of war as cold-blooded murder, but what also struck me was that the treatment of the Chinese was very reasonable and well-informed. Good treatment of bad Chinese spoken by Australians and Japanese, and intelligent Chinese understanding anyway. I wouldn't say the same for the treatment of the Japanese, but given the way that the Japanese treated Australian POWs you can't blame the Aussies for being a bit biased.

Instead, she was solely responsible for his life. If she would have just shut up and got down everything would have been hunky dory, but no she had to repeatedly insist upon standing up and expose herself, causing him to do the same. Good thing he did not marry her. She refused to pay any attention to his directions. Nothing but trouble.

Considering the age, this is a well made movie. It's a little slow, but perfectly watchable. This was made at a shoestring budget in Australia. A welcome change from the string stereotypical movies coming out of the Hollywood movie factory.
I lived in Australia for 15 years, refreshing to hear the Aussie accent, although they put it on a little thick.
I recommend this. If it's too slow for you, just move on.

You mustn't of met real Aussies then. Country Aussies have very thick accents and speak the slang where city slickers are more refined and speak more clearer..
I am from the country and taught the slang and was on a online chat with Americans other Aussies and others from all over the world.
They say my accent is really thick and hard to understand and other Aussies are more clearer. still got accent but not as thick.

Brilliant movie, some minor faults but tells it how was and endorsed by Z force Association. Killing your own injured men, or leaving them behind with a hand grenade/pistol not uncommon (ref World at War Burma). Cannibalism also not uncommon in PNG. A trully brutal all out war.

Rolph was an Australian capt known as Baldy Baldwin,He was a good friend of my mother he grew up as a child living in the Botanical gardens in Melbourne, as his father was the curator. He had done great stories but never of his involvement in WW2 or Z unit.. We would visit him at Belmont. His house was like a museum.
