Me too. There is some kind of rail system that holds them in place, but it’s relatively similar to a regular roof from what I’ve seen. There are cables behind each tile that daisy chain together. I’m trying to see if I can get more details.
@@UndecidedMF well considering I have been subscribed for a while, I am also impressed by the rate of your subscriptions. Great job! Your quality has been great and also content.
Great, comprehensive analysis of a very exciting product. But it's been 3/4 year since this video - how about an update? Have sales taken off? What are owners saying about their experiences? Are they selling or leasing more roofing systems?
So I'm young. I have no money. I can't afford any roof, I don't even own a house, yet ;) But I can CLEARLY see how absolutely amazing Tesla's products are, across the board. You can bet everything that as soon as I get to that point when I can afford to support Tesla directly through purchasing, I will. I won't even want to leave a house I own without upgrading it, for the very least to put more houses on the map with all the Tesla goodies. Tesla is that dream we all have to make the world a better place, just funded and put into action by Elon. People say he may be crazy, but this is the crazy I can get behind.
What about this caveats in their fine print? 1. Price can go up anytime at 30 days notice, 2. Removal after 30 days is charged $1500 and the tricky one for those who may want to sell their house in future is 3. They will decide their own pace/timeline for removal can take months /years?...
As a fellow resident of New England, I'm wondering why you did not choose Tesla solar panels or a Tesla roof, since you seem to supportive of them. I ask because I am considering my own options. Thanks. Love your stuff.
All of this is very interesting. But the rental side isn't offered in NC. I wonder how long before It would be? I need a new roof and was going to do it soon but watching your video got me thinking about going solar.
I'm curiously and cautiously in the market and had almost forgotten about Tesla in solar and to be honest thought the cost would be MUCH more prohibitive. My only concern is that I live in Florida and here things are a bit more complicated as out state power provider doesnt want to be left out of the loop. I think I'll be reaching out to Tesla and gathering some details, for panels at the very least, but it WOULD be nice to get a nice little power wall as well.
I don't think you're alone in forgetting about them. They've been running quiet for a while now. Florida is one of the states where solar makes the most sense ... really hope the state government can get behind it.
Mega money. Just installing one to run for 3 apartments. Oschner I think the company is from Germany. A while away yet before this category gets cheaper
@@benprovan Yes, they seem to be gathering some interest. I'm pretty sure I saw an interview with one of the principals, a young woman if memory serves. I'm thinking the channel was HyperChange (Gali Russell), but can't be sure. I'm sure there's a bunch of info in videos in various places.
If they can eliminated the rectifier loses going from Solar DC to AC to operate your home HVAC equipment that alone will save at least 10% and perhaps as much as 20% depending upon your systems conversion efficiency. That further reduces the payback on the system by a similar amount. Several companies attempting this now but as with all new technology are quite expensive. Come on Elon - I'd love to work on a fully Solar DC compatible water heater, air conditioning and heating system!
I wish people would bring up insurance claims for states that get a decent amount of hail. It's not hard to get a full roof (and then some) paid for with even mediocre insurance, which will take care of the majority of the cost of a solar roof and give a huge boost to the property's value.
Kinda wish my roof needed replacement! We’ve just signed with a traditional panel installer/supplier, and they’ve submitted for permits and provided the plans. I’ll really only get one bite at this apple, wish I was getting a Roof V3! But between the higher cost and the loss of some of the federal incentive, I guess I’m best to stay the course and get regular panels.
Live just north of you over the border. My house has the original roof on it in the house was built in 1989 so I'm one of those customers that Tesla refers to. Went ahead and put the deposit down for one of their roofs mainly to get the numbers. Either way ready to go solar and possibly storage.
I've been interested in the Tesla solar roof since 2016 and was hoping to put it on the house I'm building right now, but it wasn't quite there, especially with availability. Well, I see myself one day having this roof!!
Agreed, Tesla Energy is usually overlooked but will be equally as important and as large as the auto business as they're just now getting started in the utility-scale business and utility storage business, which is HUGE!! I've powered my EV with my solar panels for the past 3 years and would never consider going back to buying from a utility and buying gasoline.
What kind of performance occurs in winter... I get snow, ice, wind ect. I feel I'd have to have a heating solution installed to keep my roof clear to continue with solar.
Matt, I enjoy your presentations very much and wonder if you could do a few on the Boring company. There is very little updates and progress videos. I believe the underground tunnel market will be huge
Your estimate differs from mine. As a data point, we were quoted about $28k for a 11.4kW standard panel roof recently. I just did the online calculator for Solar Roof v3 after watching video an thinking I could get more production for not much more money and, sadly, this wasn't the case. My online calculator estimate was $49k for less production (10.7kW) so I'm not sure how you attained the numbers you referenced in this video. I'm looking at about 2x the cost for Solar Roof versus standard retro-fit panels from Tesla we were quoted last month. This was weeks before Elon mentioned the 10% discount which would effectively make that same retro-fit panel system about $25k now through Tesla before any federal tax incentives. Tesla Solar Roof v3 is almost exactly twice the cost of standard panels and produces less energy. I guess the wait continues....
I am constantly (subtly and friendly) promoting Tesla products to friends and even clients. Great video's like these inspire me and educate me to better understand why I should go on!
Thank you for your reply. What seems odd is you only get brochures. Even on the website, no details draws, calculations, product specifications, and applications specifications. Where’s the engineered drawings for this roof. How could a specifying engineer spec this roof from a brochure. I’ve seen more details on a cable tie. O’well.
I'm excited for their new version of solar tiles and lower costs. I'm not buying a house for 5 more years so I look forward to the next version when I'm ready to buy a house.
I know I am specifically waiting for a Solar Roof... I live in Texas so with our weather, I'll need a new roof in 3 to 5 years anyways so just more time for the product to mature..
Hi Matt, I signed up for the small (3.8kw) Tesla solar panel system but when the install team came out they found that my roof rafters are metal and therefore didn't have a way to attach the panel mounting brackets. Now it looks like I'm disqualified from getting the system. Damn!
Great video. I think you are correct. Tesla energy may not be as flashy as their cars, but is just as game changing. Using solar plus battery storage people can now take control of their energy production. And having just experienced days of power shut offs to prevent fires is something we are trying to do. We heard the announcement of the Tesla V3 tile roof and immediately contacted them for a quote. We are hoping it comes in near the quotes we have for a new tile roof plus traditional solar panels. Because we want to go solar, but do it in style!
Planning to build a small solar home in California in the next couple of years. Are the roof tiles fire proof? House will be concrete. Was planning to have standing seam metal roof for fire resistance and add solar panels. But if the tiles are fireproof, prefer that route.
Really liked seeing the Tesla balance sheet growth directly from latest 6 Quarters as well as playing Elon clips from the earnings calls related to earnings. Matt - Would you consider doing a video where you project Q1-Q4 energy generation & storage revenue for 2020? I agree the growth could be greater than the automative revenue growth and you are one of the few UA-camrs covering this topic at all (certainly wall street doesn't know how to think about this side of the TSLA business)...
Mr. Ferrell, you are absolutely an incredible technological story teller! Thank you so much for the wonderful video and I plan on watching every video I can of yours in the future! FUTURE is the key word!
I had my Tesla solar installed in late August. I felt the same way when they recently expanded the solar roof tiles beyond CA. But when I looked at the price via Build Your System I was relieved to know that our traditional Tesla solar system was much cheaper with two Powerwalls than the tile system with one Powerwall, for now that is. Either way houses with any solar system installed sell for more money than houses without a solar system.
Huge Tesla fan but I am a fan of the Forward Labs solar roof too. I just want both companies to hurry up and make these actual solar roofs available across the US not just in the West
Just to clarify, with the solar lease option, Tesla installs solar "panels", not solar shingles, right? If you get this lease package and then need to cancel down the road, do they destroy your roof removing the panels or shingles? How would that work?
The lease is regular panels, not shingles. And you can opt to just leave the panels in place and not used. If you remove them, they’d patch the holes and replace the handful of shingles that were damaged.
We would need a new roof in 2-3 years and have been looking into the v3 roof tile in the past few months. I am wondering if i did the payback period wrong on the solar roof. per quote on Tesla's site, it would cost $67k after all incentives to cover my 4200 sqf roof. Since the estimated energy generated is approx. $1300 per year, the payback period is over 50 year. For a roof tile with 25 year warrant, i concluded it doesn't make sense to replace with solar roof. Did I miss anything?
My wife and I are planning on building a new house in the next year or two. I've mentioned the Tesla Solar Roof as an option for us but the cost is scary. I understand that over the life of the roof it will pay for itself. But, it's still scary to pay $60K-$75K for a roof and 2 Power Walls when we could just do asphalt shingles for under $20K. But, we also want a generator for when the power is out in our area. Knowing that we could run the house off of solar + Power Wall-stored energy means we wouldn't have to pay $5K for a generator and the natural gas usage. If the costs come down over the next year, this could very well be an option for us. Being an IT guy and a bit of a tech geek, having this technology would also be very cool. One thing I noticed is that their tiles have gone from a "Lifetime Warranty" to a "25 year" Warranty. That's a little disconcerting.
The calculation you’d have to balance is a shingle roof plus solar vs. solar roof. They’re pretty damn close and may actually fall in favor of the solar roof. But if you’re on the fence for solar in general, then it’s a giant pill to swallow no matter what. The 25 year warranty change didn’t surprise me. I found it rather optimistic that they were offering the previous warranty for a product they were still life testing.
Thank you from a Indian subscriber... You help in breaking down things easily for people like me anyways our country is eagerly waiting for Tesla to come in here but chances are not in sight anytime soon..
Thanks for watching and subscribing (greetings from Boston!). I hope Tesla branches out quickly with this kind of tech, but I have a feeling it’s going to be a few years as it ramps up. There are other companies also putting together similar products. I’m betting in the next 5+ years we’ll start to see more options around the world. Should be really interesting.
Being in a position at the moment, where our electricity bills are ridiculous, and purchasing solar could pay itself out as quick as 10yrs, Tesla has always been the direction that I wanted to go. BUT, with the new solar roof coming in to market, it seems like it could be quite a viable option. The only issue, is how well would it stand up against storms, such as hail??
Wow! the solar roof rental thing really is a no brainer. Say you want to use solar panels, but maybe your job requires you to move to every few years, so there is no payoff in installing one. Rental would be a perfect option!!
I hope Tesla manages to make Solar Roof V3 for the other types of tiles, as that would be quite useful for historical monuments restoration. Keeping it's value but adding 21'st century tech!
Excellent video and well presented! I would go for the solar roof in 2 seconds, but we plan to move in 2 years and have to replace our roof, won't make a profit on the house and will likely lose money (live in a depressed old steel town, long story), so investing in something like this that would cost basically half of what our house is worth (and it's a beautiful, well built, gorgeous old home in excellent condition) would lead to more loss than I'm willing to take.
Thanks! And yeah ... doesn’t sound like a good option for you right now. Good news is that this type of technology/roof should become more common and cheaper in the years to come.
Hopefully they get there. Tesla's not the only solar roof tile game in town, but they're absolutely the best looking compared to these: arstechnica.com/science/2018/10/five-solar-roof-shingles-that-arent-from-tesla/
Love all of your informational videos. I dream of net-zero homes for 55+ communities, designed to absorb nature's beatings. The independent to dependent-living homes, townhomes and apartments will be full of energy-efficient appliances with an EV under the carport. Tesla HVAC and Heat Pump Water Heaters? OMG a community will be pumping electrons back to the grid.
My house has a ton of trees in the back yard, so I miss out on solar production after about 4:00 in the afternoon. Still enough juice to get me about 65% of what I use. Could still be worth it, but you’d need to run the numbers and have someone do an assessment.
I live in washington state 75,000 I was quoted with 3 power walls witch you will need after rebates its 50,000 this is without installation cost I wonder what that is bottom line to expensive try again your getting closer tesla
I really want this but what's the deal with all these "real estate experts" claiming you have to remove the solar panels when you sell the home because nobody wants to takeover the pre-existing contracts or deal with the maintenance issues. They claim solar devalues the home now although it helps you with your utility bills. #headaches
I just read that they are shutting it down, and refunding money. Sorry , I'd like to site the article but just read it in passing as it popped out on my phone.
I agree with the "Tesla is an energy (battery) company". The cars, the solar roof, and others are mechanisms to develop and sell better battery systems
Here in Poland 🇵🇱 as I will build my house in the mountains (about 2000 square feet), I will buy solar panels (about 14 kW) and heating foil for all the floors. It will all cost me with inverter around €25K and get all my heating (house and water) and electricity needs. I do not plan to buy energy storage. The way it works in my country is that when I make energy I use it and all overhead I send it to the grid and then I get it back when I need it -20% for transfer and storage of energy. Seems cheaper than what Tesla offers. Tesla do not offer yet solar roof in Poland.
I’ve been the same way ... fascinated at being able to generate your own power from the first moment I heard about it. Still picking away at my home energy improvements as I can tackle them too. Priorities ... priorities.
@@UndecidedMF In grade school I was fascinated by the little solar panels on the personal calculators. I would put my finger over it and watch the numbers fade and come back. Growing up I watched the solar car races and the new movement in home solar right now is really exciting! After a year with my Model 3, Tesla Solar is the way to go for me. It's just a matter of when. BTW, I'm a UI/UX designer as well (love your channel)!
me too im in the same situation that you are now actually i called solar city it was too expensive so i went with sunnova i wish i had the option now too bad
I been using solar for 10 years, I had panels replaced last year, because efficiency dropped by 20%. I also would say no maintenance etc is not correct, you need to clean panels especially here in summer. Also winter versus summer production varies by about 40-50%. Here in Perth Australia, we have wet and overcast winters and hot sunny summers. Because of contract I am limited to a 2kW system, so I produce 9kW I'm winter and 15.5kW a day during summer. Installation cost AUD2500.00. So to me those rental rates appear high to me
Solar prices in Australia are crazy cheap compared to the US (I’m really jealous). That’s a pretty big drop in efficiency you saw in your panels. From everything I’ve seen, it really depends on the manufacturer and technologies used in the panels. The ones I have on my roof are LG and are warrantied for 25 years (for around 20% loss at the end of that 25 years). Washing is maintenance, but there’s really no cost to that if you do it yourself ... like washing a car.
@@UndecidedMF well I agree, very surprised that a country with a lot of competition like the US prices are still very high. Well sun here has strength 5, and temp can reach 43C. However those panels were not such good quality despite 25 years warranty, however company went bankrupt. Here you need to hose down panels at least 2 times a month during summer.

Me too. There is some kind of rail system that holds them in place, but it’s relatively similar to a regular roof from what I’ve seen. There are cables behind each tile that daisy chain together. I’m trying to see if I can get more details.
Wow Matt, almost 100k subscribers bro...keep up the great work
Thanks! I’m still kind of confused, bewildered, and awestruck that almost 100,000 people are subscribed.
Man I need to shave my head and make a Tesla channel
1. Price can go up anytime at 30 days notice,
2. Removal after 30 days is charged $1500 and the tricky one for those who may want to sell their house in future is
3. They will decide their own pace/timeline for removal can take months /years?...
Really love the way you make your videos. Keep it up.
Will do.
You have a great channel there, I really enjoy your calm style!
I wonder if they'll get into ground source heat pumps, too.
Mega money. Just installing one to run for 3 apartments. Oschner I think the company is from Germany. A while away yet before this category gets cheaper
Checkout dandelion energy. They’re tackling this
@@benprovan Will do thanks
I've had my solar panels now for 8 years and technology is moving so fast now
Yep ... it keeps getting better. Assuming you’re happy with your setup though.
Imagine all the carbon you have NOT emitted into the atmosphere during that time. You're ahead of the curve.
There will always be doubters.
Always appreciate your videos, very informative. I hope to have this on my house one day.
Thanks, appreciate that. And hope you do too!
What kind of performance occurs in winter... I get snow, ice, wind ect. I feel I'd have to have a heating solution installed to keep my roof clear to continue with solar.
All well & good until one of the tiles fails. I wonder how you would replace it?
Matt, I enjoy your presentations very much and wonder if you could do a few on the Boring company. There is very little updates and progress videos. I believe the underground tunnel market will be huge
Thanks ... and like the suggestion! I’ve been following the Boring company too, but it’s been kind of quiet recently.
One site tries to keep us up to date but with no shots or videos of reg tunnel being bored, it is somewhat boring. No pun intended
Great videos keep them coming please!
I'm trying! Thanks for watching.
My numbers were based on what I actually paid for the solar panels I have on my roof already. I paid almost $30k for my system.
I was personally impacted by this. Didn't get my Powerwall's installed until Feb 2019 after putting a down payment in Dec 2017. Very frustrating time.
i want that on my house only 2 problems 1. there is only sun her during the 3-4 summer months. 2. you cant get it in norway
I am constantly (subtly and friendly) promoting Tesla products to friends and even clients. Great video's like these inspire me and educate me to better understand why I should go on!
Really appreciate that.
...and you get a new roof. This could be a huge savings over new root plus solar.
Absolutely. For replacing a roof or new construction ... things like this are kind of a no brainer.
Nice. Wouldn’t be surprised if we see more price reductions in that time too.
Hi Matt, I signed up for the small (3.8kw) Tesla solar panel system but when the install team came out they found that my roof rafters are metal and therefore didn't have a way to attach the panel mounting brackets. Now it looks like I'm disqualified from getting the system.
Damn!
Sorry to hear that. That’s a real bummer.
I’ll be buying more shares. Go TSLA!
I am on list for V3, i will let you know how it goes, i have a big weird house. But get a lot of sun and have a few teslas
Hello how are u what happened to the smart home for beginners series ...its been long will be happy to see it back
Your videos are so awesome 💪 I always 👍 before I actually view it. I'm definitely interested in the cells and the storage. Thank you so much.
Thanks bill!
Planning to build a small solar home in California in the next couple of years. Are the roof tiles fire proof? House will be concrete. Was planning to have standing seam metal roof for fire resistance and add solar panels. But if the tiles are fireproof, prefer that route.
It’s Class A UL 790, which is the best fire rating I believe.
Please tell us about water electrolysis for water purification and the Tesla opportunity on this field.
Glad I’m not alone 😜. And really good point on solar improving resale value regardless of solar tiles or solar panels.
I'm getting ready to build a house, Tesla's roof and power walls are a definite!!
Advice panels not roofing
Huge Tesla fan but I am a fan of the Forward Labs solar roof too. I just want both companies to hurry up and make these actual solar roofs available across the US not just in the West
So, what if I've recently had a metal roof installed? What are my options for Tesla Powerwall etc...
I will definitely be buying one in the next 7 years when my roof needs replacing.
How much would replacing the current roof with a regular new one cost?
Excellent, Sharing Through The TRUTH Network...
@@UndecidedMF we have the most appropriate ingredient - The Sun ⛅
Being in a position at the moment, where our electricity bills are ridiculous, and purchasing solar could pay itself out as quick as 10yrs, Tesla has always been the direction that I wanted to go.
BUT, with the new solar roof coming in to market, it seems like it could be quite a viable option.
The only issue, is how well would it stand up against storms, such as hail??
Dylan Baxter 10 years?? Wow, payback here is
My solar installed 7yrs ago paid back in 4years. My GFs new solar looks like it will be paid back in 3yrs.
The solar roof is rated for hail up to 1.75” in size and winds up to 130mph.
Wow! the solar roof rental thing really is a no brainer. Say you want to use solar panels, but maybe your job requires you to move to every few years, so there is no payoff in installing one. Rental would be a perfect option!!
So when you move your old house gets left behind without a roof?
I was looking for solar system for my new "not yet build"house so this comes just in time...
I’ll be ready for a new roof when all of this is really ready. I’m excited
Perfect timing!
I would totally do this but my state is run by Devon Energy so we can't get it here.
I hope Tesla manages to make Solar Roof V3 for the other types of tiles, as that would be quite useful for historical monuments restoration. Keeping it's value but adding 21'st century tech!
Agreed!
@@UndecidedMF agree, when we move definitely putting in tesla solar and powerwall.
Keep up the awesome videos
Please get a Tesla roof and connect it to your powerwall and tell us how it went.
We need this in the UK.
Hopefully they get there. Tesla's not the only solar roof tile game in town, but they're absolutely the best looking compared to these: arstechnica.com/science/2018/10/five-solar-roof-shingles-that-arent-from-tesla/

Thanks Matt, great info and I agree with their energy product being bigger than auto in the long run.
Thanks for watching! And love that idea.
My roof needs replacing but my house has too many trees. Le sigh...
Hope they come out with a geothermal heat pump! My furnace can use a replacement.
I have tree shade before 9am and after 2pm, hoping still viable for me....or maybe I'll have to cut down my "giant" redwoods (not really!).
My house has a ton of trees in the back yard, so I miss out on solar production after about 4:00 in the afternoon. Still enough juice to get me about 65% of what I use. Could still be worth it, but you’d need to run the numbers and have someone do an assessment.
@@UndecidedMF I won't give up, but looking at Google's Project Sunroof doesn't look promising. I'm about 3 years away from swapping out the roof.
Wonder how well it would work in a place that has snow on the roof for many months each year.
It maybe in each local fire code in your area with full solar roof.
I live in washington state 75,000 I was quoted with 3 power walls witch you will need after rebates its 50,000 this is without installation cost I wonder what that is bottom line to expensive try again your getting closer tesla
You should sell your old system, get the solar roof and make a video series about the whole experience. Would be worth the investment.
You’re like the little devil standing on my shoulder whispering into my ear.
😜
Any mention in the earnings calls of the major setbacks with the fires due to improper installation?
Tesla should have never bought SolarCity. That acquisition reeks.
As usual, great vid!
Appreciate that. Thanks for watching.
Is v3 based on micro-inverter tile modules?
If you tilt your head to the left by 45° your logo looks an awful lot like the Shazam logo! ;-)
Their rental program is not w the solar tiles, important distinction.
Good call out.
This is the goal! I’ve been fascinated by solar since I learned about it as a kid. My house needs siding and windows first though.
One day!
Blair Christopher get the solar roof first and use the savings to pay for the siding and windows.
Really like the idea of esthic solar panels. Maybe down the road they can be on my roof, keeping the rain off..
Yes, holding out for a solar roof.
Forgot my pen and pad for the list of instructions you give at the end of you're videos.
Lol.
