I notice there’s more space on one side of the letter than the other. Why is that?
Is it to have a place to hold onto with the hand that is not tracing? If that is so, should there be a version for both left and right handed children?

You have a great question. You are correct, it's for children to hold the sandpaper letter in place. It would be a great idea to make a set for left-handed children, unfortunately, I do not know of anyone who has made a set like this
