      Really? The company is still being run by the same executives (aside from the CEO who was pushed out). Same structure. Same FAA and other agencies that certified it to begin with. What really changed aside from a second sensor for the MCAS (the fact that it was certified with one is mind boggling), a software update, and a lot of PR?

    • @bobbraan8706
      @bobbraan8706 3 роки тому +2

      Now it pitches up not down when an AOA is damaged because MCAS shuts off. Still only 2 sensors not 3. 3 is required for proper redundancy so you know which one is bad.

    • @bobbraan8706
      @bobbraan8706 3 роки тому +3

      @@josky1989 Yes. 3 sensors and 3 flight computers is common on modern, new aircraft. 737 Max only has 2 of each. The crashes wouldn't have happened if Boeing had followed safety standards where a critical safety system relies on sensors, especially ones vulnerable to bird strikes etc.
      Most aircraft don't fly so poorly that MCAS is needed. In that case 3 are required.
      737 Max wouldn't pass certification as an all new aircraft for this and many other reasons. It's all grandfathered in.
      It's really a dinosaur from the 60s.
      "Its most advanced planes, for instance, have three flight computers that function independently, with each computer containing three different processors manufactured by different companies.
      So even some of the people who have worked on Boeing’s new 737 MAX airplane were baffled to learn that the company had designed an automated safety system that abandoned the principles of component redundancy, ultimately entrusting the automated decision-making to just one sensor - a type of sensor that was known to fail. Boeing’s rival, Airbus, has typically depended on three such sensors.
      “A single point of failure is an absolute no-no,” said one former Boeing engineer who worked on the MAX, "
      3 are needed so when one fails you go with the other 2 that agree.

    • @kallek5655
      @kallek5655 3 роки тому +5

      @@josky1989 No. 2 AoA sensors is standard on conventional planes. B747, 757, 767, MD-11, they all have 2 as well. 3 is standard on Airbus fly-by-wire planes, but their flight control computers are far more intervening than MCAS. Boeing FBW planes (777/787) have 2 AoA sensors plus some kind of virtual backup I believe, however I'm not familiar with the details on this, but they have 2 real AoA sensors as well, not 3.
      Planes like the ATRs, Fokker 70/100 for example have so-called stick pushers which actively push the yoke forward in a stall situation, and they also rely on 2 AoA sensors, which hasn't been a problem so far.
      The 737 MAX is still a conventional plane where the yoke is mechanically connected to the control surfaces using cable and pulleys. It can't be compared to the flight control computer system of the Airbus planes, hence saying that the MAX needs 3 AoA sensors just because Airbus planes do, isn't a fair comparison.

    The MAX is back in the news after a warning light lit up on a WestJet MAX, likely due to something engine-related. It's sad that the news tries to make it look like something MCAS-related, but in reality this is just what happens when any machine is shut down for prolonged periods. To those that say that the planes have been flying to keep the fluids running during the grounding, that is so not true because it that was true, families of the 346 would have been continuously speaking out against that 24/7.

    I never could understand the big problem that grouned the MAX8 in the first place. They made many thousands of flights in North America without a problem. Were the crews of the two downed planes not trained as well as the North American pilots?

    • @dynasty0019
      @dynasty0019 3 роки тому +1

      It a combination of poor communications between manufacturer and operators, substandard pilot training, poor maintenance, and bad design that brought the two crashes. All the 737 MAX operators in North America already have their MCAS use both AoA sensors before the accidents, so the chances of crashing like the two flights in NA is already virtually impossible unlike in less developed nations like Indonesia and Ethiopia. The biggest takeaway from Flight 610's Final Report was the pilot training needs to be addressed. Both the Lion Air and Ethiopian crews essentially tried to automate their way out of the problem and either failed to do the memory items or did it half-assedly. That's why the biggest change that came out of the recertification was that simulator time is now mandatory, while also MCAS systems now must use both AoA sensors and a new software update that reduces MCAS's nose down inputs.

    • @bobbraan8706
      @bobbraan8706 3 роки тому +1

      Boeing and everyone else agrees the crashes had nothing to do with the pilots.
      The only reason they didn't crash in North America is because 80% of them are not in North America.
      Just the odds. Would have been a matter of time.
      Russian Roulette works like that.

    Ironically, the Max aircraft are possibly the safest aircraft to fly on due to the intense scrutiny of the past 22 months.

    both max crashes were actually pilots error, BOTH crews activated auto trim and at that point BOTH planes plunged to the earth

      You dont know what you are talking about ,you are not a pilot,there is no autotrim on a 737...and etchopian pilots disabled the electrical trim first but in order to save the plane you have to set the trim with your hand,yes there is no keyboard button to do that like in fsx,the reality is different,and they were too fast to do that,so they enabled again the electrical trim and this damn software killed them

      @Nic Lazzari" inadequate training",of course if boeing didnt tell anyone about the mcas ,why there would be a training for it?can you be more specific if you meant something else

      @@Hk-uw8my MCAS makes trim inputs, which result in the trim wheels turning. If there's an uncommanded movement of the stabilizer, you follow the runaway stabilizer memory items. In that moment, it doesn't matter what causes it, be it MCAS or a short circuit or whatever, the pilot's job is to stop the runaway. Those memory items exist in all 737s, hence 737 rated pilots should all be trained for it and deal with a runaway situation in the sim. If they didn't, then that's inadequate training and they would have lost control of the plane for any other reason of a runaway stabilizer as well. As far as I know, a runaway stabilizer due to short circuit hasn't ever happened in a 737, but the procedure for it has always existed.
      Also, the Ethiopian pilots didn't disable the electric trim first. According to the flight data recorder, it took way longer for them to respond than for the Lion Air crews. It only took 2 MCAS activations to trim the stabilizer almost to the mechanical stop. The pilots then counteracted with uptrim, but stopped half way and then cut it out. By then they had already entered the overspeed condition and couldn't trim manually.
      When they reenabled the electric trim, MCAS didn't activate again at first. The pilots gave some minor uptrim, and that was what reset MCAS to activate for the 3rd time that ended it all. They could have trimmed it back and regain control.

      @@kallek5655 did you remember that the mcas can activate for nothing with a broken sensor,so no even if they trimmed it back, with the electrical trim enabled the mcas was mad and can activate at any moment,thats why they dived....i agree with american pilots union,they couldnt save the plane...this is inexcusable to blame the foreign pilots for these crashes

      @@Hk-uw8my I do remember, but I've also read the official report on the Lion Air crash and seen the flight data for it and the Ethiopian. MCAS could not activate at any moment, and it couldn't override the pilot's trim inputs. It could activate 5 seconds after the pilot stopped a manual trim input.
      The Lion Air's flight data shows that MCAS activated something like 17 times, but the captain always noticed it and overrode MCAS with nose-up trim inputs. MCAS never trimmed for its full 10 seconds, the captain always returned the trim to the desired setting. Those are facts that are in the report.
      17 times MCAS was overridden, it proves that it was possible, and one day earlier another Lion Air crew did in fact save the plane with exactly the same MCAS malfunction. That also proves that it was possible.
      The report stated that the captain, for whatever reason, handed control over to the F/O, but without telling him about the rogue trim. That was the moment that it went all sour, as when the F/O was in control, MCAS was active for longer and the F/O didn't really trim it back like the captain did. His minor trim inputs allowed MCAS to reset and activate again. That was when MCAS was able to trim all the way to the end. Why the captain didn't regain control though, we don't know.

    The 737 Max will have more crashes, count on it.
    The same Boeing culture is in place even when executives "say" they changed it. FAA regulations and government de-regulation are still the same since the crashes, Boeing is still fully capable and still does do their own inspections since the FAA does not have the amount of inspectors to keep up. Boeing did their own inspections that got the Max re-certified, not the FAA. The Max plane still has the same engines that cause the plane to want to tilt up which caused MCAS faults in the first place. 2 sensors instead of just 1 but still the same faulty design are still there. The same Boeing engineers that designed MCAS and the software are the same engineers that redesigned the system and software.
    You'd really trust Boeing after all this? The 737 Max is still not safe, and probably never will be. There will be more crashes in the coming year as more of them begin flying.

    Bit disappointed people didn't applaud on landing. Not for any awed/cringey reason but because there is a great deal of conscious anxiety about this plane and the significance of this flight can't be overstated. It would of been a nice way to have a community moment and restore actual confidence instead of bland and quiet civility.
    Nonetheless let's hope the model can continue to service successful flights and Boeing can reenter our collective minds as a trustworthy and reliable aircraft manufacturer.
