I am old and played the JRPGs in the 90s on the SNES... This game is hitting all of the right nostalgia notes for me. Also I love how they made the maps fun to explore, and the little puzzles. This and Chained Echoes are top games of the year for me personally. So fun. Also I know it sounds weird but I like how these indy RPGs have toned back the Anime art style and went with a little more Western art style (I get their are anime elements in the cut scenes)... but it is just nice to not have a copy and paste JRPG. You can really feel when a studio puts passion into their work, and a game like this deserves to be bought at full price imo.
I played the demo a few months back on Switch, and I was hooked then. So if course, I had to buy it when the full version came out. It's very impressively made. I love it.

I personally never bought into the internet buzz....because I was already all in 3+ years ago, back when this was still a Kickstarter campaign! Glad it turned out well! I'm gonna wait for the physical Switch version. Looking forward to the soundtrack because the composer of Chrono Trigger soundtrack has a bunch of music on Sea of Stars.
The Super Nintendo RPGs are the best. My favorite was the Final Fantasy Series, Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger. And I cannot forget about Secret of Mana. Looking at this game takes me back. Thanks for the review!

It seems like every review has something amazing to say about this game. It was my most anticipated game of this year for me, I'm glad a lot of people like the game, however I'm gonna be honest, i do like the game, it is good but not great. Im 30 hours in and already have quite a few gripes with the game. First being lack of exploration, you go from one dungeon to the next and then to the next, i need a bit of break and do other stuff and explore. however there isn't really much to explore or do other things. Avoiding enemies can be tricky and once you're in battle theres no escaping. Also the enemies only drop loot that is food ingredients for recipes that are only for healing hp/mp which isn't much of an incentive, would of liked it if they dropped rare weapons, armour or item for crafting, which is another thing, no crafting or making unique weapons or armour, the weapons are very basics. They introduced fishing which I've liked in previous jrpgs however in this its really basic, the fish you get just turns into food ingredients. Im hoping i enjoy the game more at some point. I do have to remember that this is an indie game and no a big bugdet production, I still prefer Chained Echoes, now that was an amazing indie rpg.
I feel the exact same way. I'm still enjoying it, but it is clearly a step below Chained Echoes. Glad I'm not the only one who is not in love with the game.

literally how lol the terrible lock system is literally telling you exactly what to do each turn since only one ability can break multiple of any given element
Hardware wise if you didn’t want to compromise the game’s graphics in anyway you would need at least a Dreamcast or better (OG Xbox, etc…) to pull off this game as is without hurting the widescreen, resolution, colours, effects and framerate. 32-bit consoles from the 90s couldn’t handle the resolution to begin with.
Gonna download the demo after work, looks very much like something I want to play as an oldschool FF fan. Lots of people in the FF community have been recommending it to me too
Sea of Stars is the best game I've played in a very, very long time. Definitely the best RPG I've played since Lunar Silver Star on Sega CD. It's gorgeous, it's got a good story, you think it's over and it keeps going several times.
What threw me was that I started playing the demo on Switch then changed the Xbox for the full version. I was surprised that the demo starts you after the prologue. I was thinking I was playing a different game on Xbox until I got past the prologue.
What I’m getting from this is that you thought it was fine but it didn’t blow you away. This looks like something that would be exactly what I’m looking for after Octopath Traveler 2.
I felt almost every battle was perfectly challenging and nothing was too hard. Probably because they don't expect you to grind your level to make it easy.
The game looks great, though I would be remiss to not point out that some of the things about it that you are praising in the video I first experienced with Super Mario RPG. For instance the active time battle stuff with timing button presses as well as having platforming in an RPG that complements the gameplay. I believe you said you never played it, right? The remaster will be here soon so you need to get on that.
