On August 4, 2015, three days after he walked his daughter down the aisle, Steve VandenBrink had a stoke. Things began to improve, but then Steve crashed as the result of an additional brain stem stoke. He was given a 10 percent chance to survive the necessary surgery. He did, but was diagnosed with "locked-in" syndrome shortly afterward.
Steve's wife and daughter rallied around him - they quit their jobs to focus solely on his care. From Mercy Health to Select Specialty Hospital, then The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, followed by Mary Free Bed at Home, Steve came to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital as an inpatient of our Intensive Medical Rehabilitation Program. Progress in the nearly two years since his initial stroke has been slow, but steady.
