- A wild feud that lasted for decades caused the creation of Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad almost out of spite... allegedly.
Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad (or, in short, SSSS) is a 53 episode American television series that ran from 1994 to 1995.
It was produced by Tsuburaya Productions, Ultracom Inc. and DIC Productions, L.P. and was an adaptation of the Japanese tokusatsu series Denkou Choujin Gridman (or Gridman the Hyper Agent) in the same vein as the much more popular Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Holy Crap. This show had more action behind the scenes than the show itself.
Kind of like the whole Capcom/SNK feud. When SNK started to do fighting games and ripping off some popular Street Fighter characters, Capcom retaliated by ripping off a couple of Art of Fighting characters to create the uber lame Dan Hibiki.

@@demons27 I never knew Capcom and SNK had a feud when their IPs crossed over together for 2 games. I'm aware that Fatal Fury was Street Fighter's main rival in Japan just as Mortal Kombat was the latter's main rival in America. Ironically, if not for Fatal Fury's Mai Shiranui to compete with Chun Li, Capcom would have never created Morrigan Aensland to answer back the Bouncy Ninja. 😎

Gawd I remember watching this show vividly. I loved how the stock footage had a better frame rate and looked way more polished than MMPR. Only gripe is the weird airtimes.
Looks like Gridman was shot on videotape, while the shows MMPR used were shot on film. The weird airtimes were probably due to low ratings. Syndicated shows don’t have a fixed airtime like network shows. Stations can move them as much as they want.
It may have also looked better due to the footage being used for MMPR being close to 20 years old by the time it aired on American television.
@@beauleidig8670 You're right. Before I knew about the cut footage, I always wondered why the fight scenes looked so grungy compared to the scenes with the teens. It made sense afterwards.
If u look at a side by side comparison of the Japanese footage on power rangers u can see a difference cause the original version that was shown in Japan alway looks more dinghy to best describe it vs as it we saw it that probably had a color correction or had the filter taken off that made it look dinghy
@@beauleidig8670 But the Zyurangers footage for MMPR was only a year old by the time Saban got it. As a matter of fact MMPR's first episode aired the same year that Zyurangers show ended.
Y'know...That Servo/Gridman costume really holds up. It still looks fantastic by modern standards.

I always wondered as a kid why more people didn't love this show as "it has the coolest looking hero!"
My Son was obsessed with Power Rangers when he was a kid and I got him a boatload of the toys, but when I got him a Servo action figure, he played with it nonstop and called it his "Power Ranger Super Commander!"
Lol that reminded me of the time in my 90s childhood, my Dad mistook Superhuman Samurai Cyber Squad as VR Troopers by buying me a VHS tape of the former than the latter. Of course, I never complained because I loved both shows as a kid, but c'mon. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was KING of kid's TV programming. You can't beat them...unless you're Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa at the end of season 3. Dark joke Lol.
Ah. The joys of childhood imagination. I remember recasting my VR Troopers, a random Aliens film marine figure, The Shadow and an old Baron Zemo figure as Batman, Superman, TMNT, Ghostbusters, Power Rangers and X-Men before I could get my hands on the actual toys. 🤣

Fun fact: in the SSSS.Gridman dub not only does the villain Alexis Kerib speak with a posh British accent, but he also uses the term "meat thing."
True. He also does a decent impression of Tim Curry from the original live-action series.
Three Fun Facts that I know:
1.) This show was a Tokusatsu before it became an Anime.
2.) Gridman is part of the Ultra Family.
3.) It's toys were produced by Takara (TakaraTomy).

Yeah, the Dub actor for Alexis Kerib was trying to mimic Tim Curry's Kilokahn with his performance. I think he did pretty well, honestly.
SSSS.Gridman actually took a lot from Superhuman Samurai, like how the NGE High Students, i.e. the Assist Machines are named after the Superhuman Samurai names of the various Assist Machines. Hell, the "SSSS" in the title is the most obvious homage, even if it's given a different meaning in the show.
No joke, I'd watch a miniseries about the DiC vs. Saban war.
Bonus points if it includes the UA-cam video where the guy shouts "DICK!" over the logo.

Good to see more people remember this show - we had it on WPIX channel 11 in New York at 5:00pm followed by the mentioned VR Troopers at 5:30. 1994 was a good year to be into Power Rangers and stuff like this. I was also part of a small weekly chat group on AOL that would discuss the series soon after it went off the air.
WPIX was where I watched both of those shows as well. I had it on cable despite being 5 hours north of NYC in Northern NY. I was usually stuck watching it on an old 70s B&W TV we kept in the kitchen because my parents would be watching TV in the living room. The 5 part Dark Heart run on VR Troopers tugged on my 9-year-old heartstrings, when Ryan came so close to rescuing his father from Grimlord.
You were lucky. It was on for me (coastal NH) around 7:00 AM along with VR Troopers.
I saw both shows on PIX as well after the Power Ranger on WNYW Fox we switched even thou sometimes we only watch WPIX because of Disney Afternoon and Sometimes we watch Nickelodeon
I also watched it on WPIX. I was eight.
I'm 39 n remember this show.
I am a 90s guy and I am glad someone actually remember this and made a video on it.
I got Zenon a couple years ago and recently picked up Drago, to go with the Servo figure I had for quite some time.
I went through a bin of my old toys recently and found an ultraman-looking dude that I had no recollection of. This episode solved a mystery that's been eating at me for weeks.
I still have the giant Servo figure and Zenon that combines with it, and the mini Servo and Drago figures. The only accessory I'm missing is the watch that plugs into the giant Servo's arm.
I found giant Servo's sword fits perfectly in my Classics Megatron (the nerf gun) figure's hand.
Been there with the Mysterians and a backpack from a G.I. Joe like toy called Aqua Fighters.
You can take a picture of it on eBay and listings will pop up

Due to HB's grip on Children's TV weakening, Warner Brothers, Disney, & DIC Were fighting tooth and nail for the Kids TV crown, Suddenly some Hotshot Heeb named Haim, along with some unlikely allies from Japan decide to throw their hat into the ring.
I guarantee somebody gets axed at the finale of every season. I’m also confident that Ted Turner is somehow involved in this storyline. 🤣
A war that could have been solved if they just talked about it, but instead they decided to Toku-Bout it...

Just to let you know: Tsuburaya's official UA-cam channel is releasing the classic Gridman series one episode at a time, subtitled in english, every friday. They rotate each series, so the early episodes were removed already, but since all Ultraman series released so far have beed subbed (or DUBBED!) in english, it's cool to pick one up and start watching anyway... Per example, Ultraman Z just re-started from episode 1.

Interesting that SSSS actually kept the story concept pretty close to the original Gridman series from Japan. The Saban shows at the time used their footage to do stuff that was wildly different.

I have to assume TsuPro was a bit more hands-on in the adaptation process than Toei was.
I remember the creator of _Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight_ was quizzed pretty heavily by Ishinimori Productions before getting the okay to make that show.
IIRC, this show is the reason the Japanese anime "Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers" had to get it's name changed to "Ronin Warriors" during the dubbing process, out of fear of a potential lawsuit.
That is hilarious given the shows had nothing in common. Hell nothing about SSSS screamed "samurai" anyways, our hero looked more like a knight.
I'm gonna be honest... I like Ronin Warriors better, it's not like it's an incorrect way to use the word. They were all master-less warriors traveling the world to stop evil.

Man, I loved this show. I got The Deluxe Servo, Drago, and Optimus prime looking one. The boxes were huge, and the playability was epic. Thanks Dan for going over this one, it brought back good memories and that killer theme song.😎

Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills!
This one was hilarious because they tried to make a Power Rangers-like series without having lined up Japanese footage in advance. They had to make all that footage themselves, and it really shows... the characters all look like silver-lipped lucha-dorks.

I grew up watching the show when I was a kid. It's how I first knew of not only Gridman but also the actors themselves like Matthew Lawrence. Also RIP Rembrandt Sabelis. He was in the show as Lucky London.

SSSS Gridman is littered with "Transformers: Shattered Glass" references. I'm surprised you didn't mention that.
Not to mention the sequel SSSS.DYNAZENON which had "Beast Wars" references instead.
It also references the Ultra series.
Maybe the original staff from gridman were amazed in the Transformers so much it did make the armor props based from.

I was so hyped about this show when I was a kid! I bought two of the mini toys and a servo action figure (which barely had any articulation). Trying to watch the show was a pain at first cause I didn't know what time it aired lol. Also love trigger's SSSS.gridman.
I was also super hyped for this show and got several toys, I also had the sword which remains lost for over 20 years, but I hope to find it someday.
I have the original Gridman sitting on my HDD and hope to watch it... someday.
I also watched the Trigger show and it was one of the worst things I had ever seen.

One of my favorite scenes was from a episode where they had to prepare for a big exam and while Lucky was literally eating books, long story short, at the end he got one of the highest scores and then Tanker just eat a page of his math book because he had an exam tomorrow.
Not gonna lie, the show was corny as hell but it wasn't boring at all.
I remember as a kid I had the golden servo I absolutely loved this show as a kid a shame that it didn’t catch on much

Been watching the dub of _SSSS.Gridman_ on Toonami. The guy voices Alexis, this show's version of Khan Digifier/Kilokahn, does an _amazing_ Tim Curry impression!
Even though I used to watch quite a few episodes of this when I was 11 and 12 years old, this is one of those shows I've watched way more as an adult than I have as a kid, especially being able to pick up on certain dialogue and references that would have gone way over my head back then. The American footage really needed canned laughter in many scenes. The weirdest part of this show was Kath Soucie as Sam's unseen younger sister.
I love this show as a kid and I had all the toys. I still have the fully assembled Draco.

Dude! I used to watch this all the time! I even had some of the toys! Those were the days! I even watched "Power Rangers", and "VR Troppers", and had their toys! 90's kids had it made when it came to imported shows from Japan.

unfortunately, there wasnt even a second season to Gridman so that wouldnt have been possible (the sequel, Gridman Sigma, was supposed to have Malcom's counterpart become the new Gridman, Trigger actually made a short on him a couple of years ago) Fun Fact, most of the ideas for the second season of Gridman were used for SSSS Gridman

I LOVED this show growing up. I remember begging my mom for his figure when I saw the commercial for the first time before the series aired. Believe it or not, I remember seeing the toy commercial during Power Rangers LMAO

I remember coming home everyday from school when I was 6 or 7 and watching this show. Then a couple years ago Pluto TV had a channel that showed it until Viacom bought it out and turned it into all things Viacom.
I had the toys from this show, that dragon-jet thing always made me feel like I was going to break it when 'transforming' it. It was well made for a toy and detailed for sure.
Amazing backstory on the show and the rivalry between Saban and DIC. This is why I love this channel; I almost always learn something new and this episode was a doozy! As a side note, Tsuburaya has always had issues getting their properties to make it big in the USA; they've tried many times over decades through many third parties (and on their own) and had many missteps along the way. Despite this; many of their creations, especially Ultraman, have become icons in their own right! I find their history on US screens fascinating in and of itself. Vintage Henshin, here on youtube, has a great video on the history of Ultraman on American TV, and it's a brilliant video on the subject!
This needs a Martin Scorsese movie adaptation starting Mathew McConaughey and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Possibly the weirdest episode of Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad is the one where Sam gets trapped inside a camcorder. And this was back in the day when the Video Toaster was in use.

Why am I so hype about catching that anime? I only got to watch that show when I got to stay home from school on a sick day, which was almost never, but that theme has been stuck in my head ever since.

Back in the early 90s I loved this show. I still have all of the vehicles and Servo action figures from the toy line. Even though the human segments were super cheesy, I still loved it anyway. My buddy wanted to be Malcom Frink. He loved drawing Japanese style Kaiju only wishing someone like Kilocon would bring them to life. Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad had cool looking toys that had a ton of play value. I’m wondering what they go for on the after-market.
The live action scenes had some interesting subplots and even character growth.
Wow, i knew there was some bad blood between Saban and DIC, but never suspected all those shenanigans were goin’ on 😄 Didn’t actually watch the show, but the toys were cool, managed to pick up all the DX sets on clearance in the late ‘90s 😙
When the boom of Tokusatsu hit America in the early 90s, Superhuman Samurai was my favorite...prolly because it reminded me of Ultraman, which i loved as a child.
I have only the vaguest memory of this show. In fact, until you made this video, it hadn't crossed my mind since the nineties.

My friend in the late 90s had a good chunk of the first series main characters vehicles. Zenon, Drago, and the Servo main figure. It was fun clipping them together and BIG figures.
My podcast even did an episode comparing a single episode of SSS and Gridman that were the most similar in story.

I loved this show. Too bad none of my friends at school watched it or claimed they didn't. I like the campiness of it. The show didn't take itself too seriously. Troy Slaten is a lawyer now.
I think they'd have amassed more coin if they had made all the viruses from the show into action figures. Contrast that with Power Rangers which did so with every Mighty Morphin' era monster.
Most of them did get regular and mini sized action figures, but either the waves they were released in were too infrequent or the show really didn't sell them very well.

Glad to see you talking about some Toku-related content. I've been getting into the SSSS Gridman anime lately. Now is most certainly the best time to be a Tokusatsu fan. There are actually a lot of other Ultraman-inspired heroes like Spectreman, Galactic Giants, and several others.
Ty for this.., I've been casually looking for the name of this series for the last two decades. I remember this being on right before or after Hercules: The Legendary Adventures.

I always thought one of the robots on the show had a head that looked just like Gen 1 Optimus Prime.

Gotta say, the Deluxe figures in the line, the big transforming ones, kicked power rangers in the ass in terms of quality. I remember I had Zenon and Servo as a kid, then got a Megazord and was thoroughly disappointed in it.

As short of a run as this show had I still remember it and actually enjoyed it.
I actually like this TV show it was interesting and it was a little different from what the Power Rangers was while being very similar but yeah I like this more than I like VR Troopers or tattooed teenage alien Fighters from Beverly Hills

SSSS.Gridman is so damn good, it made me want to go back and check out the original shows. Great video! I didn't know any of this.
Rewatching the show, I can say the writing of SSSS was pretty good, and sometimes better than MMPR. Don't get me wrong, I love the cheesiness of MMPR, season 1 specially, but the personalities of the Rangers are too "goody-good" and wholesome, making them completely unbelievable sometimes. Of course, they were larger than life and wholesome, it has to be like that, but Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad, with Sam and friends having strong personalities, they could clash between them, and with his antagonist Malcolm, looking closer to "real" teenagers (quotation marks, of course).

You know, as a kid, who grew up in the 1990’s during my childhood in elementary, these kinds of shows introduced me to Japanese pop culture because of the footage they borrowed, superhero tokusatsu but also various anime in which they took their influence from, which were mostly fight scenes from mecha science-fiction, which I would later on discover.
I so have these toys somewhere in my storage. I miss this show and it really needs to be remade.
