- The history and lore of Grand Cathay, the nature of its government and peoples are all too often blended with rumor and falsehoods by the time they reach the scholars of the Old World. But the truth of this distant Empire is such that it would likely not be believed.

I really love these videos, but I don't know where else to put this little observation.

They are one of those factions that have been in Warhammer Lore for decades, but never had any official models and were always just far off in the background. Honestly, I'm just happy to have a human nation in Warhammer that isn't disease-ridden, wallowing in poverty and drowning in filth

Slight correction on the sky fleet: the "carefully controlled fire" in the balloon is a caged vermilion war bird, a blazing hot creature related to the pheonix.

Wait, so the Dragon Emperor also don't like being worshiped as a God, has children who has their own factions they lead.
Dragon Emperor really is the Fantasy version of the Emperor of Mankind. We should now refer him as "Big D"
The dragon emperor is just smarter and created belief system to replace believing in gods
@@chimera9818 not really. He's legendarily stupid for how faith in Warhammer works. Hes throwing away a titanic wealth of power, ultimately kind of making Cathay Irrelevant on the stage of gods. Faith is the only thing that can power gods of order and those are the most powerful entities in the world besides the chaos gods and the Slann. It would literally be the greatest power he could obtain for Cathay and he's throwing it away. + The way Warhammer works faith is the only thing that protects human souls from the chaos gods, as they don't have a god of death either Morr stretches himself thin to protect their souls or they just go to the chaos gods giving them a massive feeding ground.

As a Malaysian Chinese guy, I like Cathay very much. It is quite heartwarming to see another country stand up and fight against the Ruinous Powers!
The creativity used by CA to improvise Cathay makes it even more splendid, if not inspirational.
It’ll be so cool to see more and more creatures from Chinese mythology added as time goes on with that nice Warhammer flair
Imagine grand cathay in warhammer 40k
Yeah, i like that about Warhammer Fantasy. The good guys are not just "Europeans" (like in LotR) but all kinds of humans (basically from the real world Germans, French, Russians and Chines). Great thing.
I am happy with the inclusion of Cathay as a faction, it's mechanics seem right up my alley and the lore about it is very interesting.
A tiny part of me wishes we got the Dragon Emperor and the Moon Empress as legendary lords but the more I learn about them I come to realize it would be like playing chaos with Khorne or Tzeench.
Now I have to wonder if in the future we may see more factions like not Japan for example.
It would be more like playing with Sigmar pre-godhood or Nagash. The founding heroes of each faction are always OP, Aenearion with the Sword of Khaine would match him
The makers say that Cathay and Kislev will be all we get for empires in the Far East; Warhammer III won't be featuring Nippon or Ind.
@@pendragon0905 I suspect GW does have plans for the table top Cathay using the ivory road system which is why they are a faction in this game, fantasy Japanese and indi no plans at all.
@@pendragon0905 A serious shame for that to be the case, though not entirely unreasonable considering that this is a semi-collab with GW to effectively promote Warhammer: The Old World.
That said, CA did add Norsca and the Vampire Coast despite not being fleshed-out, standalone factions in the tabletop. So who knows what they may add next. Even if not Ind or Nippon, there may still be room for one more surprise.
@@Alex-pj8nz I mean the leaked map does have space for the snakemen of khuresh at least.
Nippon and Ind are unlikely.
I guess Nippon will be a feudal eastern power with alot of spirits and mysticism?
What about Ind? Just a caricature of ancient India with elephants being pandered like kislev bears?
Didn't expect them to see an unseen faction like Grand Cathay to be featured in Total War Warhammer, let alone be fully fleshed out. One can only imagine what other secrets in Grand Cathay might be revealed.

More accurately, he's not older than the Old Ones themselves, he just predates their coming by at least several centuries, but as the Old Ones were stated to have an interstellar empire by the time they came to the world, I'd say they're a lot older.

I use to watch way to much Chinese Cinema growing up though so.....
Those Cathay maps are eye candy, looking forward to Warhammer 3s release
As a child of Chinese descent, I cannot be happier to get (any) lore for Cathay! If I do break my long-standing policy on not spending money on video games and got TW: WHIII, this would easily be my main faction. I just wonder now if 40K has something similar. Something like Vostroya and the Vostroyan Firstborn (themed around Russian culture), except for Chinese culture, maybe? I'm more than satisfied with just Cathay, though.
This game has the Kislevites.
How about them for fantasy Russians?
I think White Scars are as close as you'll get for 40K, which is more "Yuan Dynasty" at best, but you can make your own chapter descended from the White Scars that is heavily Chinese themed, it would be awesome to see on the tabletop! Get creative!
@@JCDenton3 This right here. The galaxy is a big place, and many Chapters of Astartes and legions of the Guard go unsung. Make your own if you want!
The White Scars are awesome steppe nomad warriors which you can use but personally I think its a rather crude path to map onto China itself. Frankly, the excellent statesmen like qualities of the ultramarines or the defensive and implacable imperial fists would be far better chapters to make a successor descent from as their traits are more closely aligned with the majestry of previous chinese dynasties.
Same story here! It's nice to see some representation in games where I don't need to pretend or customize a character to look Chinese or remotely Asian lol.
And yeah, 40k doesn't have much for China outside the White Scars and maybe the Eldar who both take notes. Although the White Scars are very much Mongolian and not even Yuan Dynasty so your mileage may vary.
For the people saying that they are Chinese, I can assure you that titles like Khan and Keshig are not originally Chinese. It would be like saying you can just use the British to represent Americans because America was a British colony historically, replacing the Minutemen with Redcoats and calling it a day. Close enough in the loosest sense but also definitely not correct

By the way, are the Monkey King and the Fire dragon the same charachters or different creatures? Because I understood also the former controls the southern territory
The Monkey King and Fire Dragon are different. As for control, he's sort of like a bandit king. The Fire Dragon is the Imperial governor, but the Monkey King holds all the power in the region.
Basically warhammer version of Sun Wu Kong/Ho Chi Minn, doesn't like the dragon emperor and sets up his bases in the mountains with his monke warriors, while the fire dragon presumably controls the lowlands of the region and defends the south from Ind and Khuresh. Don't doubt that either have fought before, but it's more like the Kislev political crisis, except much, much more violent and have been going on for a lot longer.
@@yeeyee5057 There's also teh fact that the Monkey King is sometimes described as a beastman, yet has occasionally come to the Flame Dragon's aid against Chaos, so he's clearly more 'civilized' than the beastmen of the Old World. I think their relationship can be summed up as, "Best Frienemies."

Age of Sigmar has cut anything that had personality of It's own from their universe after the End Times, all in fear of "stereotypes". Everything they do now is generic, but they will keep using old characters to sell the whole thing. @@bigbangrafa8435 you clearly don’t play tabletop or know anything of the lore outside of what some little angry ‘lore’ (reading off of the Warhammer wiki) UA-camr tells you. Like I played 40k since 2004 and played fantasy for a few years before AoS. Try actually looking into AoS and the armies nowadays before seething. it’s far from generic if anything it’s 100x less generic than fantasy was and I loved fantasy since I had Druchii, Asrai and empire armies to prove it.
But hmm yes the Lumineth and Idoneth are so generic in comparison to the Azur or Empire. Like you say AoS is generic when most of the old lore was based on real world places just fantasies… which you know… is pretty generic.
Like seriously the AoS haters really need to grow up like you can still buy most of the old fantasy models (as they are useable in AoS) and they’ll be releasing new lines soon and no it wasn’t ‘better’ back in the day. The end times were certainly terrible but since AoS found it’s footing it’s comparable to the height of fantasy, nostalgia for something you didn’t have really can cloud your opinion like old lore was only ‘better’ because people just pick and chose the bits they preferred and ignored all the cheesy bits they hated.
Edit: not to mention pretty much 80% of the Cathay lore is new and is made to the fit with the new old world line of models they’ll be doing. It’s not AoS it’s still fantasy… because fantasy is still a thing… people seem to forget that.
Edit Edit: it’s also well known amongst TT players that AoS wasn’t implemented because ‘stereotypes’ or whatever nonsense you’ve read it’s because they could trademark everything in AoS whilst fantasy it was a lot harder as it was all generic.
I'm super into the Warhammer Fantasy setting. I really like all the armies-- it's full of crazy, insane fantasy whatevers everywhere, yet at the same time models and the vibe is so very grounded. I love this setting and I hope it gets some more GW love!

Magic has become completly necessary for all nations.
Too bad all cathayans may have end up in the realms of chaos....
Yeah that's my main issue with them. They just thematically fit more into age of Sigmar then Warhammer fantasy.
Not entirely unreasonable to consider. From what I found, the Celestial Dragons and their children fled and disappeared to who-knows-where at The End Times. With their apparently vast power, it may not be impossible for them to survive and rebuild elsewhere in the universe - maybe even a new Realmsphere.
Would make for an interesting story between them and the likes of Sigmar and the Grand Alliance of Order, maybe even payback the forces of Destruction (i.e. Ogres, Goblins, Giants and especially the Orks, considering the latter played a large part to Grand Cathay's fall).
@@anonymousmind8402 they are just emperor dragons. They are powefull in comparison to your normal person and might even pose w threat to an entire knightly order, but on the scale of gods that AOS operates in (without a massive power boost ) they wouldn't be that important. And as they are creatures of the celestial winds they would probably be servants to Sigmar. Tough you could handwave yeah with absorbing magical energies and the like.
They could be around as powefull as people think they are, if they made themselves worshipped deities, but that would change their characters to represent what the believers think they do (like let's say the dragon emperor would be seen as wise and kind and he'd become incapable of being self serving or cruel even if he needs to be ).
I truly believe the Monkey King was an effective leader, and his downfall if just Dragon propaganda.
