hmmm. they started being distant a few months before debut, and it went like this until 2018. they weren't enemies- they were still friends, they have some great moments in 2017, but if you look through 2015 and 2016, you'll find that they were pretty distant. there was definitely something that happened a few months before they debuted- my theory is that, as they were extremely close back during predebut, the company told them that they had to stop. so they did. hence, everyone used to say that wonwoo hated mingyu, because he was really mean back then. to him specifically, but to everyone else as well. maybe it was his persona, but I'm not really sure. still, wonwoo is a really soft person, so in late 2017 he started being nicer to mingyu! in 2018 we can already notice that they were close again. a lot of my favorite moments are from oh my era. answering to your question: yes, they were distant for 3 years and yes, probably because the ship got too popular- it happened to verkwan as well. since 2018 we can notice they're close again- and this last year, even closer!
