SUVs just depress me. I have to admit this review is what SUVs are about. Comfortable transportation with a good use of space and luxury. It doesn't try to be a race car and it's not being tested like one. Great job!
I will never buy an SUV. Everywhere you look people are driving them. I want a daily driver that is practical and fun to drive. I will buy a Mini Cooper before i get an SUV and i don't like Mini
Love the “if you have a small animal in the back seat you’re going to turn them into pulp”. You’re certainly on top of the UA-cam reviews the mix between serious and sarcastic comments makes it so much more involving. Keep up the good work.
We drove the q5, x3, qx50, rdx, mdx and stelvio before we leased the rwd version of the Glc we have now. To us the Merc had the most comfortable interior and seats, best quality leather (I'm kinda picky with that), very comfortable drive, and surprised us the most because I went in thinking I wouldn't like it at all. All were really good, but for the same money roughly, the Glc felt the best. And Mark is right about the burmester... Worth the money. Just know that this doesn't have any sporting drive feel at all. Which is ok because it's an SUV.
I'd choose the GLC and QX60 last over on your list. My opinion X3 > Q5 > RDX > Stelvio > GLC > QX 50 (MDX is a midsized sedan) and (Burmeister is flat on Bass). Just goes to show everyone has different taste.
With all the switchgear embedded in center consoles these days, I'd love to see a reviewer introduce a "How much will it cost me to spill my latte," segment.
I had one of these as a rental car and put about 1k miles on it. I didn’t know what to expect, but ended up really liking it. Like you mention - smooth ride, extremely comfortable, and the interior is a great place to be.
I bought my first ever GLE350 last December. It is my first luxury car as well. I test drove the competitors and I personally liked how Merc drove. I was looking for comfort and smooth ride. Absolutely love it.
My dad traded in his 2007 E class (it had a couple minor electric gremlins, but held up surprisingly well) for this car. He really enjoys it. Good review!
Very nice review. I have the 2018 GLC300 4Matic and after 8100 miles am still very pleased. Mine has the older COMAND system instead of the new MBUX, and from what I have heard, the new system is amazing, but I think I am glad I have the older, simpler system. And, yes, the brakes squeak when it gets cold, but not for long. The ride is quiet but not completely-one still (properly) can hear the engine and road noise, but they are “turned down” with the acoustic windshield. I saw some comments about the “bland” look-but I would call it classy-in a few years, it will not look nearly so dated as the overly sculpted designs one sees in some other cars nowadays. And this four-cylinder turbo can REALLY move. I also keep mine in comfort mode 90% of the time, but when I need extra, sport and sport + makes it feel as if I am on a race track! Super handy for passing.
Rented one and drove from Vegas to Socal. The ride is very comfortable. The bass is so flat on the sound system and the usb ports kept failing. Other than that power was adequate but the suspension was really good.
All I want is a Porsche Macan with BMW infotainment and GLC interior. I agree with Mark though, if you value isolation above all else this is the car for you.
Just in case someone's looking for a used glc now, had to point out that all the hvac can be controlled by buttons or the screen. Mine is fully loaded with cold weather pack and cooled seats and I've never went to the screen for any hvac controls. Not sure why he said that. Just a heads up.
Thanks for reviewing this thing. As a former S2000 owner and "car enthusiast" with a baby on the way, the GLC ended up on top of my list and you nailed exactly why it was chosen. (Comfort, tech, interior, just the right size) The Macan GTS was test driven and I thought to myself, why spend so much on a sporty SUV when my hatchback (Focus RS) or the wife's BRZ is more fun to drive. Unfortunately, the BRZ got the axe to make room for this one.
Turbowski is probably in anger management classes where they are likely telling him to stop working on and talking about cars since it always triggers him.
Just picked up a loaner 2020 GLC with nice wheels and LED lighting package. Basic distronic package. It is super smooth and nice. But I'll go for GLE than this GLC as I currently own a E350 2014..! I specifically asked the SA to give me a GLC or something and definitely not GLA, which doesn't feel like Mercedes in the first place. I'm surprised by the quality.
More German luxury brand buyers in the entry level segment are now more inclined to cross shop in the Japanese & Korean brands for more value for money buy Nice review

Excellent review as usual. This segment is packed. Awesome to have an in depth review here. This will be essential information for anyone looking in this segment.
A relative of mine has one of these. It's whisper quiet inside, it's like a museum compared to my 2016 Mustang GT. Quick car, good mileage. And much better fuel economy than his Audi 2.0T.
Thank you for the good review! I can confirm it's a great car in all aspects, i was very impressed after the test drive, much more than by any other competitors in this class.
one of the most cozy MB-s I know. A bit too much electronic blabla for my taste but the ride and the friendly appearance and practicality of it is real good. My spec was around 49k.

My folks (who are in their 60’s and 70’s) gone through 2 gens of GLK and now on their 2nd Gen of the GLC (just before this redesign). I’m very aware of the ups and downs of this vehicle. For 80-90% of baby boomers, this vehicle is overkill for their needs. However, since we’re dealing with an older generation, a lot of the tech in it will scare them. The sensors and “eyes” on this thing are super sensitive. You approach a vehicle ever so slightly, it’ll give you a loud beep with a hazard light coming up on the dash. Freaked both my folks. First time I heard it I thought the damn thing was going to blow up. The ride isn’t all that great either. It shudders a little over certain bumps. Not all refined the way he describes it. Then again, if he doesn’t say most of what he’s allowed to say, they won’t give him anymore press cars. Lol GLC = great for older people who have arthritis or osteoporosis or who don’t care about going quick down the road. I really hope I will never get to the point where I have to give up driving a normal saloon or sport coupe.
Nice Benz without all the super unreliable electronics and technology that will break down once the warranty is over like most German vehicles. Beautiful interior colors and love a old school German build quality feel.
I sat in every model at a MB dealer two months ago. All the seats were hard and the leather was rough, including the famous S class. No clue why they're doing that nowadays
6:30 the e-class 2019 does a little good opening style for the lights. Adaptive high beam assist- it does make the lights dance a bit and it's fun to watch all the time when driving in dark. The 2014 does come up and dance a bit, but the recent ones have multiple lights in each headlight assembly..!
You have the best car reviews ever, thank you for the amazing content,it would be of great help if you can review the new GLE, i have mixed feelings about it and cannot decide...i need your opinion.Thanks.
Opeth and warm LED lighting, nice Mercedes might do electronics well now, but I'm not sure it's a positive that it should be done at all. How much value do these systems add, or does having so much shit to monitor and be interrupted by end up turning luxury into a hassle and info overload?
I have a passenger who often adjusts climate and cannot deal with the electronic-only HVAC controls, so this is a hard pass. Also, although I'm not savagegeese, the 9sp felt a little weird. Not sure how to explain it. I ended with X3, but GLC certainly rides better. One other thing, there's an off-road package for GLC, which sounds quite attractive (X3 has a conventional tire and spare option to counter-balance that). But the electronics and UI is a problem, despite the praise it received in this review.
Hey Mark, Love your work. Thanks for all you do. Lexua just announced a twin turbo v8 for the upcoming LC F. First person I thought of was you. Cant wait to hear your thoughts!
So... What really is up with the melodramatic intro music?.. :-) How's the 4Matic system compared to other AWD/4WD systems? This review's short and sweet.
The 4 Matic is a great system in the GLC because it’s a 40% front 60% rear split all the time unlike a lot of Haldex systems today in other crossovers. Go look up GLC off road, as this thing is really capable surprisingly. Mine is awesome in the snow and I average about 28 more highway driving. 35k miles the only issue so far was I replaced the run flats for better continentals and added a spare.
Did you purchase the Genesis G80? I recall you spoke in past about looking at one but due to dealers finance approach it did not happen. I am shopping for a family sporty sedan and can t quite yet afford a Lexus GS F at this time. I have not yet tested a G80.
$60k for a GLC (or X3 or Q3) is just a terrible proposition, unless you're allergic to mid-size SUVs for some reason. For the same price (after incentives) or $5k more, the mid-size counterparts to these cars are FAR better cars, in every aspect. You'll have to forego the sound system upgrade to stay under $65k, but the base system in the X5 sounds much better than the X3, and probably the same for the others.
I think Mercedes usually ends up making up for less sidewall with air suspension on higher trim levels/options. But those small wheels with large sidewalls are definitely factors in comfort.
Dilemma... how does this compare to Acura RDX Advance? I spec’ed out both vehicles and the prices are almost the same around $52k based on my needs. Need to figure out which one to go with. I like the Mercedes’ quality, tech and brand better than Acura but Acura probably holds better over time. Have 10 year old RDX and it has been the best (in terms of cost) vehicle ever to own.
0:57 nice cut Mr. Goose Cannot thank you enough for teaching me about suspension components and geometry. Nothing else like this on UA-cam to my knowledge, at least not for a general audience. If you had a shirt with a diagram of suspension components on it I would buy it.
How do you test the audio? Do you test the audio while driving? I’ve noticed that many audio systems sound great when the car is stationary but is terrible when the car is in motion. Sometimes, the audio is great in the front seats but is bad in rear seats. Since you seem to have the knowledge to gauge audio quality, I would like to see audio tested in more dimensions.
Excellent review. I have a 2018. The only issue I have is the side to side movement, it makes me and my kids sick after 30m-1 hour of travelling. One needs to try out this car for a day before you buy. Other than that it's awesome

I think it rides so well at least in part due to the smallish wheels. Doubt that it will remain as comfortable on bigger ones.
I think Mercedes usually ends up making up for less sidewall with air suspension on higher trim levels/options. But those small wheels with large sidewalls are definitely factors in comfort.

Excellent review. I have a 2018. The only issue I have is the side to side movement, it makes me and my kids sick after 30m-1 hour of travelling. One needs to try out this car for a day before you buy. Other than that it's awesome
Dean,
I also have a 2018. There is no side to side movement in mine at all. You need to get this fixed; it really should not be there at all!
is the color led package something u can order after u have the car
