When mine changed, either by my actions/clicks on the site, or your own update process, my regional estimates changed a lot. Some was refocusing and changes of ratios, but others were new.

    Can Ancestry set up our matches according to which line they belong to. Maternal or Paternal. We would do the work once we know what line the person is on. We could move it over to the list of matches for mother or the list for father.

      Hello Lovesha! We appreciate your interest in Ancestry and will be happy to provide some insights.
      We would love for you to be able to learn more about your biological father's side of your family and DNA test is a good starting point. When you take an AncestryDNA test you will be matched with anyone else also taking part in the service that shares DNA with you, from close to very distant relatives on both your biological mother's and father's side. By reviewing and contacting your matches you may be able to connect with biological family on your father's side. However, we always want to be clear that there are no guarantees for what you may find as it depends on who else is taking part in the service, but we have the largest DNA database of this kind in the world and have helped many members locate their biological families. As a start we recommend reading through the support article 'Finding Biological Family' here: support.ancestry.com/s/article/Finding-Biological-Family.
      If you have any questions or if we can be of further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to our customer support team. You can find our chat here: support.ancestry.com/s/contactsupport.
      We hope that this is helpful and wish you much success with your search!

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  5 років тому +4

      Hi Monique. When you take an AncestryDNA test, your DNA is compared to everyone else who has taken an AncestryDNA test and if you share a significant, measurable amount of DNA, we put them on your DNA Match List with a prediction of how closely or distantly they are likely related to you. You do not need to test a parent or sibling to be able to see your match list.
      If you have family members from another country who have taken an AncestryDNA test, they will show up on your DNA Match List. If they have not tested with AncestryDNA, you will not see them as Ancestry does not accept uploads of DNA samples or results from other sources.

    I have a situation where I share ONE grandparent with someone who popped up as a match on Ancestry. What happened was that her grandfather's wife died leaving behind seven children. Her grandfather then married MY grandmother and they produced three MORE children including my mother, so we, therefore, share a grandfather. Ancestry couldn't decide whether we were first or second cousins, but went with the latter. Does anyone know the term to describe the relationship I have with the lady I matched with? Siblings (unless they are identical twins) do NOT have the exact same genetic makeup. Each siblings inherits 50% of their DNA from mom and 50% from dad. But, they do not get an equal 50/50 split of the genes of each parent, they get a random 50%. And their sibling gets a random 50%. This means that siblings, typically, will share about 50% of their DNA, and 50% will be unique to them. (Crista)

      Whys it sad? Things cost money. I find this sort of thing very important. Genetics are the future. Every potential life threatening disease is encoded in your DNA. Every genetic mutation that makes it impossible for you to get certain life threatening disease is encoded in your DNA. In the future, theyll be able to manipulate what DNA you get from which parent. That's good for parents that have, say, the fatal familial insomnia gene.

      @CristaCowan 2 роки тому +2

      It's not that the test is giving a false reading so much as the recombination of DNA is random and therefore when you get down into those very small, single segment matches, it is highly likely that you do not have a recent common ancestor. Personally, I focus on matches above 20cM and only delve into those smaller matches if it is a known family member of someone with a higher match.

      I have two DNA matches and I am a little confused on the Centimorgans and DNA segments.Under my 3rd cousins my Great Grandmother's Maternal Brother(My Great Great Uncle) took the DNA test and we share 136 Centimorgans across 9 DNA Segments.Then under my 2nd cousin list there is a woman that share 313 Centimorgans across 15 DNA Segments.I believe she can be My Great Grandmother's Paternal sister.I was wondering why these two DNA matches Centimorgans and DNA segments are not similar as far as numbers?

    I got my kit for Christmas, I haven't mailed it yet, cuz I'm nervous.. I don't know anyone that has done the test.. Will it be a waste of time, ? Should I wait til someone in my family does it ?
    What if I have no matches, Will it make me look bad ? Who sees my test besides the Church and I. ! Is this connected with the Government agency, NSA or any other Government agency in anyway at all ? Do they look at it ?

      Ancestry is a privately-held company and not affiliated with any church or government. We give you complete control over how your DNA data is used, shared, and retained.
      Everyone who take the AncestryDNA test receives in their results a DNA Story (which includes their Ethnicity Estimate and any Genetic Communities they are connected to) and a DNA Matches (which is a list of everyone in the AncestryDNA network with whom they share enough DNA that it is likely they are related through a recent common ancestor).

      @@JB-pd4ni Sorry if we were unclear. Everyone (male and female) receives 50% of their DNA from their father and 50% of their DNA from their mother. The AncestryDNA test is an autosomal test. That means we look at the DNA inherited from BOTH parents. This means that we can connect you with relatives on all branches of your family tree.

    It's weird that your paternal grandmother shares that amount of DNA with you. My maternal grandfather shares 1,866 cM of DNA across 53 DNA segments, that's quite a lot more... O_o

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  8 років тому +4

      It is a little on the low side but still within range. We share an "average" of 25% of our DNA with each of our grandparents. But, we could inherit more from grandpa than from grandma. What this tells me is that I likely share about 2000 cM with my paternal grandfather, even though he is not alive to test. This also means that more of my matches are likely to be from my paternal grandfather's side of the family than my paternal grandmother's side. (Crista)

      Hi Autum. Thanks very much for dropping by. We understand that the results might lead to some questions. Your DNA matches will comprise of anyone you share DNA with, who have also taken our AncestryDNA test. If your birth mom isn't showing in your DNA match list it can be worth double checking your hidden match list, in case they were added to this list in error. You can learn more here: support.ancestry.com/s/article/Hiding-DNA-Matches
      It's also worth verifying with your birth mother if they have also taken an AncestryDNA test in particular, and if they have, if they may have opted out of being listed as a DNA match, as at that point they would not show in anyone's DNA match list. We have a more detailed guide that we'll link below for you which we hope can help to explain what you're seeing further. Thank you so much for reaching out to us so we could provide these resources. We hope you have a great day.

      Based on what you've shared here, it sounds like you got the majority of your matches from DNA you inherited from your father. At the top of your match list you will see a "Mother" filter. Any matches you do not have in common with your mother, likely came from your father's side of the family tree.

    What if no one in your entire family hasn't tested

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for stopping my, mr stl. We appreciate your interest in AncestryDNA and will be happy to provide some insights. With our test you would be matches against everyone that shares DNA with you and opted to take part in the AncestryDNA matching service. Your DNA matches can be close family members, but also very distant relatives many generations away. Most members have hundredths of matches, but this depends on who else have taken the test. As an example, if all your relatives come from a country where we do not sell AncestryDNA you may have only a few or even no matches. If you find that you have no DNA matches you will still receive your DNA Ethnicity Results, and if someone should match you in the future they would show up at that stage. The following article provides an overview of what to expect from AncestryDNA: support.ancestry.co.uk/s/article/What-to-Expect-from-AncestryDNA. We hope this is helpful!

    This seems kinda stupid to me. If you have your uncle tested, you already know you're related. So why go through the effort? Also, I don't really care how much DNA I share with a fourth cousin. What am I missing? Could it be a marketing program for Ancestry.com to sell your whole family a DNA kit?

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  6 років тому

      If I test my uncle, and it comes back that we are biologically related as "Close Family" then I know that my father and my uncle were in fact full siblings and that both of my grandparents are, in fact, my grandparents.
      If I test my uncle, and it comes back that we are biologically related as "1st Cousins" then I know that my father and my uncle were, in fact, only half siblings and that one of my grandparents is either not my father's parent or not my uncle's parent.
      If I test my uncle and it comes back that we are not biologically related, then I know that either my father is not my biological father or my father and my uncle are not really brothers.
      Does that make sense?
