Hey man, another great lesson!!! Thanks a lot. You have become my favorite UA-camr for these kind of tutorials because you go step by step and explain everything well in a manner that other do not. Coming from a total nub, thanks again!!
Thanks! I appreciate it! I try to understand the steps involved and show as much of a real world scenario as possible so it could be replicated by others who wish to do similar things.
I just ran across your video. I've been looking for this exact solution for a while. I want a low power consumption computer to use as a back-up for my main TrueNas box. I also wanted a computer that is fan-less so there is nothing to clean if I set it up out in the shed for "offsite" backup. Thank you for running through the process for setting it up as a replication system. I have ordered the Zimablade NAS package, and I'm hoping that Amazon has a good deal on hard drives during next weeks Prime Days.
Nice! Glad you found it helpful, and I hope the process goes smoothly! I think it should do well at being a low power TrueNAS backup while being the same price or cheaper than a 2 bay NAS where you cannot install your own software. When coming up with a project idea for the ZimaBlade with NAS kit, I thought using it as a low power replication backup would be a perfect use case for it because it doesn’t need to be the fastest system for an extra backup.
Thanks! Trying to do various projects. Finally got caught up on products so I'm going to work on some other technical content and circle back around to a few things.
I recently built a TrueNAS server with this same kit. My only major issue is with the thermal design. I find that if you're running TrueNAS with no apps, the CPU temp hovers around 50C, but once you start running apps (esp. Jellyfin), the temp can ramp up pretty quickly. The obvious flaw in the thermal design is that the heatsink case is at the bottom of the unit and so the heat doesn't really have much room to radiate. This design is the complete opposite from all the fanless mini-PC router appliances you can find on Aliexpress. As such, I ended up running the Zimablade in upside down orientation with an old CPU heatsink stuck to the case with a thermal pad, which keeps the temperature at much more manageable levels for fanless operation.
Yeah, I noticed it runs a bit hot on the bottom. I put tall rubber feet to elevate it to help with temps a bit. A lot of fanless mini-PCs run in that 50C range so that is relatively normal but if you're running heavier apps like you mentioned, you might want some extra cooling. I think the designed it the opposite way for the ZimaBlade for aesthetics reasons but unfortunately causes some extra heat build up when running several apps on it.
It should work. I didn’t test the ZimaBlade with a large drive but the USB thumb drive I booted from shown as available for the storage pool. I’ve also plugged a 12TB USB drive into my main TrueNAS server and had it show up as well.
Hi there I am trying to set up a system for streaming media, home assistant, some containers and light virtualization. I am thinking about running TrueNAS Scale on Zima Board or Blade with Jellyfin container. I am a bit worried about transcoding 4K tho. Is it possible to run this system I described and still being able to access and display 4K content from other devices? What about Dolby Atmos? Thank you very much :)
The Intel N3450 CPU does support Intel Quick Sync so it might be possible to transcode 4K but not sure how many simultaneous streams. I tested this on the N5105 CPU which is faster than the the N3450 and it worked surprisingly well he to hardware transcoding. I would just caution that the ZimaBlade and ZimaBoard hardware is not the fastest but it’s designed to be super efficient for many relatively lightweight tasks for hosting various apps/services on your network. I re-encoded all of my videos to mp4 which is compatible with all of my players so I rarely need to transcode but I have hardware transcoding enabled just in case I need it.

Hi. Do you know if a 18tb usb external drive will be recognized and mounted on the usb 3.0?
It should work. I didn’t test the ZimaBlade with a large drive but the USB thumb drive I booted from shown as available for the storage pool. I’ve also plugged a 12TB USB drive into my main TrueNAS server and had it show up as well.
